Magpies To Pursue Other Targets And Ditch Debuchy Move

Surprising news being reported by Sky Sports news today, that Newcastle United may be ready to move on to other right-back targets, and ditch the move for Mathieu Debuchy, if there is no movement soon from Lille on the transfer price.

Mathieu Debuchy – have Newcastle given up?

The Lille right-back has been the number one target for Newcastle since the Magpies gave up on striker Luuk de Jong, who has since joined Burussia Monchengladbach for £10M plus add-ons, with Newcastle reported to have offered £11M for the Dutch International striker, who wanted to join the German club.

And it would be a surprise if Newcastle walked away from this deal for Debuchy, after it seemed only yesterday that Lille had brought in Troyes full-back Djibril Sidibe, to  replace their French International.

But there is no agreement on the fee with Lille, and perhaps Newcastle have been in contact with the French club lately, and decided there’s no way they will meet the price Lille want for their full-back?

Perhaps Inter-Milan will be willing to meet the price being asked, if Newcastle do walk away.

Of course Lille received a monumental £32M for Eden Hazard from Chelsea (you talk about overpaying for a player), and there is now no pressure on them to sell, just to get the transfer money for Debuchy this summer.

But we’d be very surprised if Newcastle just walked away from this deal, and maybe this is just a negotiating ploy by Newcastle – we hope  this is just a negotiating ploy by Newcastle.

But the fact is – we are still waiting for Newcastle’s first senior transfer success this summer.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Note: I’ll be out of commission until tomorrow morning – I’m taking a day trip to Greensboro, NC with my son Paul.
So I fully expect Newcastle to announce their first senior summer signing today – probably Mathieu Debuchy – hope so. 😀

I am starting to think that the so called plan Ashley and Llambias made for Europa League qualification is simply just to keep al first team players and bring in a few youngsters. I know it is still early doors but every day that goes by without a significant signing I get even more worried

I can’t see half the rumours being true, but if we signed Debuchy, Sakho and Remy that would be clear statement of intent.

Any updates on the Good transfer?

It’s not just the purchase price to consider and his ability, we want players with the right attitude and at the right wages.
How I see it is if he will improve the squad, has the right attitude and won’t cost too much in wages it is maybe worth paying an extra million or so to buy him?

Worst case i hope at the least we sign a quality centre back.

Just realised my earlier comment means we’d have half the french national side! Might aswell add M.Sissoko to my list then.

I understand the way we do our transfer business is to get the best deal for the club and lately we have been fantastic at this but some times you just have to bite the bullet and pay the extra 1-2 million that the player is worth I just hope the powers that be know this as well

This is v disappointing if true. NUFC are the victims of their own success in betting players on the cheap near contract end. As I have been saying for weeks , sometimes you just have to pay up. Ashley isnt the only negotiator out there, and some of the sheep on this site might start to understand that now.

sweendog – thanks for the update. Dunno if the papers are just rehashing the story of its genuine. Cant say id be disappointed if we didnt get Remy though…if the Cazorla to Arsenal for 16mil fee is accurate then Remy is not worth 18-20mil by a long shot. I know that they don’t play the same position but still… Remy has failed to make a move to a big club and is 25 so his relative worth cant be that big…sorry but no.

On Debuchy…i’d say we go for a 6mil big (if the initial 4mil was true). With the player pushing our way 6-6.5 should be enough although i would advise paying a bit more if necessary not strictly because of the Debuchy’s value but also because i believe it would act like an anchor for keeping Cabaye with us long-term…just my 2 cents.

even if Ashley decides not to strengthen other areas, fine. Midfield and forwards we can depend on our youngsters.

But our defence areas is paper thin and with poor quality in depth with many untested in the highest level. Desperate reinforcement is needed in that department.

Can see us finishing mid-table and getting banged out of the europa cup early if we don’t sign any players. We need to nail down our main targets in Debuchy, Douglas, Anita, Sissokho and Remy.

And it begins. Just because we’ve pulled off some coups before, it doesn’t mean you can do it all the time. Sometimes you just have to man up and meet the other clubs valuation. All this fannying about is gonna make other clubs less keen to do business with us in the future as they’ll know we’ll just dick em about.

Getting real tired of Ashley’s penny-pinching. Make a statement of intent and put some cash into the club. If we don’t get at least 3 (In my opinion we need five) first team players through the door this summer then there’s no way we’ll qualify for Europe again this season. Add another 3 back up players/youngsters as well for rotation options.

I think if we want to get a better result next year, we do have to sign more star player in order to keep up wif big 4 and tottenham
Mathieu Debuchy is one of the star player we must sign this year. We must sign him all cost
Newcastle earned the most against another premier league’s clubs
We should have enough capital to sign him
We must change our transfer policy!!

Until the club come out and say they have moved on, no one knows what the situation is. The same way people guess who we are after, which bids have alledgedly been made and turn out they havent etc etc

I honestly think Blogs and the like have made the situation worse as they report every newspaper article as if it was the truth and stir up the rumour mill, same for twitter etc. I can still remember when on holiday and out of nowhere we signed Shearer, no protracted arguing and rumours, ah the good old days………

And also the headline of this piece isnt even close to what the story says.

The headline says we are moving on from Debuchy, the article says we MAY move on IF there is no development soon between the 2 clubs, 2 totally different things.

Same sensationalism as the red top papers sadly.

I have faith that this signing will go ahead. They’ve signed another RB, they’ve said he can leave and he’s clearly said that he wants to play for Newcastle United. Both clubs will try to haggle the best price. It’s only fair Lille want to get as much as they can, and at the same time Newcastle don’t want to pay more than they need to, which is a bonus.
Look at Chamberlain, great player, but Arsenal had to pay 15 million for him. Our two youngsters cost a couple million between them, and they’ll be worth five or ten times that in a couple seasons probably.
It’s frustrating sometimes, but I’m happy the way Newcastle are going about things. I’d rather we ended up run like Arsenal than Portsmouth.

Im probably in the minority here but he is a good player not outstanding, move on if the deal isnt right which Ashley has proved he will do.

I was just about to post on Gosling and the fact he will struggle to get starts unless injuries hit us. It is a fine balancing act but Pards might just think his youngsters are up to challenging first teamers and from what i have seen I would agree with that. Remember Fergire though Nevilles Beckham and scholes were good enough and threw them all in!!

The one position I do think we need is a Centre Back and Pards told us he is looking for a goalscoring CB with more presence in both boxes.

Carlton, Modric is the best distributing midfielder in the premiership, to get Cabeye to play like him you would have 2 have Tiote like players and a different formation to the one we currently employ. I would like to see Marveaux fit so we can play 4 4 2 but that remains to be seen, he hasnt played regularly now for nearly 3 seasons.

Belhanda is amazing but he wont be coming here, we already have our game changer in benny.

if over this next season we can bring in Debuchy (we might be planning on waiting until Jan to get a cut price, and shipping Simmo off then, would tie in with him saying he’s definitely staying) Sahko, or somebody of that quality, and a striker such as Remy or Carroll, personally i’d choose Remy due to his versatility and explosiveness, we have strong physical player in Ba and Cisse tbh, although i am a fan of AC like

Hopefully Debuchy, Douglas/Toby and Anita will be the defensive players coming in with Remy and possibly another midfielder coming in. I reckon we could get Remy for £13m.

If we choose not to sign Debuchy, we could end up with Rosales or Cissokho. I’d expect us to sign a left-back rather than a right-back. We have Perch, Raylor, Tavernier, Santon, Gosling, Guttierez and Saylor who can all play at right-back. We don’t have one natural left back in the squad.
