Surprising news being reported by Sky Sports news today, that Newcastle United may be ready to move on to other right-back targets, and ditch the move for Mathieu Debuchy, if there is no movement soon from Lille on the transfer price.
Mathieu Debuchy – have Newcastle given up?
The Lille right-back has been the number one target for Newcastle since the Magpies gave up on striker Luuk de Jong, who has since joined Burussia Monchengladbach for £10M plus add-ons, with Newcastle reported to have offered £11M for the Dutch International striker, who wanted to join the German club.
And it would be a surprise if Newcastle walked away from this deal for Debuchy, after it seemed only yesterday that Lille had brought in Troyes full-back Djibril Sidibe, to replace their French International.
But there is no agreement on the fee with Lille, and perhaps Newcastle have been in contact with the French club lately, and decided there’s no way they will meet the price Lille want for their full-back?
Perhaps Inter-Milan will be willing to meet the price being asked, if Newcastle do walk away.
Of course Lille received a monumental £32M for Eden Hazard from Chelsea (you talk about overpaying for a player), and there is now no pressure on them to sell, just to get the transfer money for Debuchy this summer.
But we’d be very surprised if Newcastle just walked away from this deal, and maybe this is just a negotiating ploy by Newcastle – we hope this is just a negotiating ploy by Newcastle.
But the fact is – we are still waiting for Newcastle’s first senior transfer success this summer.
What do you think?
Note: I’ll be out of commission until tomorrow morning – I’m taking a day trip to Greensboro, NC with my son Paul.
So I fully expect Newcastle to announce their first senior summer signing today – probably Mathieu Debuchy – hope so. 😀
