Newcastle Reported After Spanish-Based Central Midfielder

The Sun is reporting today that Newcastle are interested in 23 year-old Abdel Barrada, who plays for Getafe in the Spanish first division, as a central midfielder.

Abdel Barrada – Real Madrid also interested

We had mentioned before that Newcastle could be short of central midfielders this season, as we have seen both Alan Smith and Danny Guthrie leave the club, after their contracts ran out at the end of June.

There’s not much information in The Sun on this story today, other than Everton and Spurs are also said to be interested in the player, who was born in Provins, France.

Abdelaziz Barrada is a footballer of Moroccan descent, and is said to be available for £9M, according to the Sun, but that figure is way too high for a player who has only played three times for for Morocco.

The lad joined Getafe from PSG a couple of years ago,  and only made his debut in the Getafe first team last season, when he made his debut in August.

If that £9M figure is in any way accurate, then Newcastle will not be interested in the player.

But the player seems to have been catching the eye last season, and there were reports earlier in the year, that Jose Mourinho of Real Madrid was keen on recruiting the very skillful midfielder.

The fee of £9M seems high, but the other clubs said to be interested in the player,  would suggest this lad’s a good player,  and he may be  a late  developer, just like Peter Beardsley was.

Peter was spotted playing for the Vancouver Whitecaps when he was 22, and he himself admits he developed into a good (great) player rather late,  after Newcastle United signed him from the Canadian club in 1983 – and the rest is history.

What do you think – about Abdel Barrada that is – we know all about Peter Beardsley. 😀

To avoid contoversy you really should have written “in my opinion” Pedro was the best player seen at SJP.

I am dying to hear some good news on debuch. I think the most important position that needs recruitment this summer is up front. Come Jan with both dembas out other than shola who is a good support striker not one to depend for goals unless against the mackems. Other than shola we really do not have any depth and in the case of an injury we will be quite desperate. As much as i would love debuch now. Upfront is the most important i believe and Carroll/guidetti/castaignaos/remy/gameiro would do it for me. The rest of the positions obviously needs better dept CB and RB but not too worried with RB simpson is still contracted and plus we got tav/perch/rtaylor . CB is next with willo being questionable and Staylor’s injuries. Perch is more of a CDM and RB then a CB.
Every week i hope for me to turn on my laptop and see some good news. Let’s get debuch and doug in so we can really focus on getting a striker and the first leg europa!

Jail for Ashley @ 11 – Have to say I think the best player seen at SJP was Tony Green. Not here for long but had it not been for a career ending injury at such a young age he would have been a world great.
Fastest player I’ve ever seen over the first few yards from a standing start, brilliant close control, tackled like a bear trap for one so small and a thunderous shot to boot.
Got to say Beardo was VERY near though.

We are approaching the 2 weeks from the point where pardew said ‘probably get players in about 2 weeks’ so I think things will happen in the next day or two. Everyone seems to be back at their clubs and are ready to stay/go as required or requested.

if this guy is good enough and at the right price .. maybe the idea is to have cabaye play deeper ..still I reckon we need another Defensive midfielder .. the positions we require are
    CM
    RB
    Striker .
    If we get
    Anita/Barrada
    Debuchy
Remy .. can see a cup or top4 looming
    .

Wynsleap @ 20, Yes, Tony Green was a wonderful young player who had it all – until (I seem to remember, but so long ago) a stupidly clumsy tackle from a Spuds player put him out for months.

I also seem to recall that it was shortly after his “come-back” again against Spurs, that he was clogged again and that was basically the end for him!!

The above could be off the mark – it must be over 30 – 35 years ago!!

Spurs did a number on him didn’t they? Targeted him because of his skills and pace and knacked him. Isn’t that the main reason we don’t particularly like the spuds?

    Jail for Ashley.
Yes there have been many outstanding players who have given me great pleasure over the years like the great Len White, Ivor Allchurch, George Eastham, Bob Moncur, Jim Iley, Stan Anderson, Dave Hilley, Jimmy Smith, Mickey Burns, Gazza, Big Wyn, Pedro, Big Al, Supermac, Terry Hibbett, Andy Cole, Keegan, David Ginola etc.
Unfortunately for every legend there has been a ton of pathetic dross who were not good enough to wear the black and white strip.
Thankfully we don’t really see totally sub-standard players in our first team now.

Redondo surely you are not questioning that Torres HAS been good in the premiership? Him and gerrard together have the best goals to game ratio of any Liverpool strike force ever. Because of gerrard playing off him he has been classed as a striker. Torres may not have done well recently but he was outstanding those first 2 seasons and then when he wanted to leave he under performed due to being unhappy and hasn’t picked it up again but he will be good again. You think he’s bad? Would you turn him down to join us?

September 2 1972 away to Cripple Alice was the fateful day.

Butchered by Mel Blyth – God forgive him.

Even many Blackpool fans who have seen players like the great Stan Matthews, Armfield and Ball have described Tony as the best player to grace their shirt.

One of the few bits of footage that survive from that little televised era show Tony making the late, peerless, Bobby Moore look inept (slightly mitigated by what became known as West Ham’s “Blackpool night club” incident).

Still rankles all these years later…

    BTW great medical news Ed…

alas only likely to get snippets such as that 1971 blackpool/west ham cup tie

(and I think the last time I saw that aired was in a documentary about Bobby Moore’s career as he was stripped of the club captaincy after the game
http://www.football-england.com/blackpool_4_west_ham_0_fa_cup_1971.html gives a taste of the day)
