The Sun is reporting today that Newcastle are interested in 23 year-old Abdel Barrada, who plays for Getafe in the Spanish first division, as a central midfielder.
Abdel Barrada – Real Madrid also interested
We had mentioned before that Newcastle could be short of central midfielders this season, as we have seen both Alan Smith and Danny Guthrie leave the club, after their contracts ran out at the end of June.
There’s not much information in The Sun on this story today, other than Everton and Spurs are also said to be interested in the player, who was born in Provins, France.
Abdelaziz Barrada is a footballer of Moroccan descent, and is said to be available for £9M, according to the Sun, but that figure is way too high for a player who has only played three times for for Morocco.
The lad joined Getafe from PSG a couple of years ago, and only made his debut in the Getafe first team last season, when he made his debut in August.
If that £9M figure is in any way accurate, then Newcastle will not be interested in the player.
But the player seems to have been catching the eye last season, and there were reports earlier in the year, that Jose Mourinho of Real Madrid was keen on recruiting the very skillful midfielder.
The fee of £9M seems high, but the other clubs said to be interested in the player, would suggest this lad’s a good player, and he may be a late developer, just like Peter Beardsley was.
Peter was spotted playing for the Vancouver Whitecaps when he was 22, and he himself admits he developed into a good (great) player rather late, after Newcastle United signed him from the Canadian club in 1983 – and the rest is history.
What do you think – about Abdel Barrada that is – we know all about Peter Beardsley. 😀
