Why Simpson Doesn’t Have To Leave – If Debuchy Arrives

9:16 am, Tuesday, July 24th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 19 Comments

The signs are good, as we reported last night, that Mathieu Debuchy could soon be joining Newcastle, after Lille signed 19 year-old Djibril Sidibe from Troyes yesterday, and the youngster has already played for the French U20 side 7 times.

Danny Simpson – in action for Newcastle in pre-season

The conventional wisdom seems to be that if  Mathieu comes in then Newcastle will almost immediately sell Danny Simpson to one of a number of clubs – possibly Reading.

And that could well happen, and will definitely happen if Danny continues to refuse to sign a new deal for Newcastle, with the club trying for over a year now to sign up the former Manchester United defender, and terms of around £30K/week being offered.

But there’s another way this could all end up, and that’s with Danny signing a new deal, and taking his chances at Newcastle, to fight for his first team place.

From what we’ve seen of Mathieu, Danny would have hard job of staying the first choice in that position, but don’t forget he can also play on the left hand side at left-back.

While it’s very possible the 25 year-old will leave Newcastle this summer, he’s been a very good player for Newcastle in their last three seasons of  astonishing revival, after we were relegated in May of 2009.

The lad has played 112 times with two goals for Newcastle in that time period, when Newcastle were apparently down and out – well that’s what the press kept telling us – and yet finished in 5th place in the Premier League last season, and were even fighting for a Champions League position on the last day of the season.

We know Danny has his critics among the Newcastle fans, but should Danny leave he will still deserve enormous credit,  for what he’s helped Newcastle achieve over the last three seasons.

We still hope he will stay – but he would need to sign that new contract, and then we’ll have players fighting for the two full-back positions on Tyneside, and that cannot be bad.

What do you think?

    Oh dear

    Redondo

Torres at Liverpool was regarded as one of the best strikers around. He’s looked good for chelsea, just lacking goals.

    Oh dear indeed

  • 4 Markaccus // Jul 24, 2012 at 9:25 AM

I wouldn’t worry, bazraz, this was an inevitable course of events, everyone knows we won’t pay top asking price, if they really want to sell him, I reckon it’ll be about 6.5 mil.

    Yes Toonboy

including fabrgas and alonso, but I’m not talking about EPL only. I also follow Serie A, a lot of spanish players fail miserably only handful of players succeed compare to dutch, italian, french, argentine, brazillian players.

@ toonboy, Torres also played brilliantly for Spain this summer, when given the chance. Class player wherever he goes. I only think he got so much grief at chelsea last season because his performance was compared with the shevchenko debacle. Unfairly I think.

ReposI watched a re-run of the NUFC – liverfool match last night with a few friends and we all thought that simmo and willo were immence with willo getting man of the match,.they were on the night, true defenders.
I accept that simmo is poor with the final cross but as a out out defender someone who doesnt go on pointless runs leaving gaps at the back, I rate him as one of the best in the PL.
I would like to keep this guy as a tried and tested defender. wont be too disappointed if we dont find a direct replacement.
To all your simmo haters this is my opiniun after watching this guy for most of the season and note he always give his best and does wear our shirt with pride and for these reason, I will always always defend him against comments like ” hes shite” from piss heads on this blog who know nowt about our great club.
    Let the insults begin.

    maybe we’ll get
Cesar Azpilicueta or sebastian jung .. it’ll be one of these 3 .. it depends on Lille not budging though

  • 9 bazrazmataz // Jul 24, 2012 at 9:35 AM

There must come a point where all this haggling has to stop now lile have the replacement we need to move fast with a decent offer or risk loosing him to someone else

redondo – like i said…this is a byproduct of the La Liga where Barca and Real dominate and the rest of the teams just fight for places 3-5 or so. I despise those 2 clubs btw because they are killing spanish football. For instance, they get 60-70% or so of TV rights money between themselves while all the other teams share the remaining 30% or so.
As an example (with the new tv deal for EPL that starts next season), how would you feel if ManU and Citeh (top 2 last year) would get 2,1 billion between themselves and the rest of the teams(18) would have to share 1billion between them? … would that be fair? … thats what would happen in spanish footy.

The sooner we get rid of Simpson, the better. Would rather cash in than keep him on tyne-side. He cost us champions league football last season. He deserves to go. Raylor and Perch are much better players.

If we pull out of the Debuchy deal, I think we’ll definitely sign Cissokho.

  • 12 Scottiedog // Jul 24, 2012 at 10:10 AM

I really think Simpson should stay and keep cohesion in the defence. Too many changes could destroy the team

  • 13 JDdubai // Jul 24, 2012 at 10:17 AM

    Simmo should go.

He tried his best, no issue with that, its not his fault he’s crap offensively, his position is defending and he has done well for us with that so no issue there.

But to move forward, in the modern game you need full backs who offer some kind of threat going forward so Debuchy it is for me. I wouldnt be surprised if Simmo is better at defending than Debuchy but overall we get more with the Frenchie.

Plus if Simmo stays as 2nd choice then it holds back Tavernier from developing this season, give the young’un a go as back up.

But overall thanks Simmo, tried 100% as far as I’m concerned and didnt cause too much trouble compared to others.

  • 14 gfp13 // Jul 24, 2012 at 10:28 AM

Kets….. How did Simmo cost us a champions league place last season?

I do agree he needs replaced in starting 11 but I wouldn’t mind him as a back up. He is definitely our weak link but it’s a bit far to say e cost us 2 league places on his own

  • 15 Brutooon // Jul 24, 2012 at 10:32 AM

Danny Simpson is a player that will gave u CONSISTENT 5.5 over 10 every single game

He is an OK player but he didnt offer much attacking

player like Kyle Walker gave 8-9 over 10 each game.

  • 16 Geordie In Oz // Jul 24, 2012 at 11:11 AM

He cost us very little, stuck with us through the tough times and played his heart and soul out for us last season. Danny Simpson is no world beater, we all know that, but he deserves more respect then he gets. He would be a great squad man for a big season ahead and a familiar face as back up for Debuchy if we end this pain and finally get him signed!

  • 17 woolerbill // Jul 24, 2012 at 11:16 AM

simpson needs to go , we have enough players to cover right back spot

  • 18 Munster Mag // Jul 24, 2012 at 11:26 AM

Simpson is a far better defender than people give him creditb for, but if we could spend the 3mill we make on him and spend iot on some tidy french / dutch / spanish player, I’d take it.

  • 19 Rotonda heights // Jul 24, 2012 at 1:10 PM

Tavernier is a better footballer than simpson and could understudy someone else coming in to the building – pardew speak.
