The signs are good, as we reported last night, that Mathieu Debuchy could soon be joining Newcastle, after Lille signed 19 year-old Djibril Sidibe from Troyes yesterday, and the youngster has already played for the French U20 side 7 times.
Danny Simpson – in action for Newcastle in pre-season
The conventional wisdom seems to be that if Mathieu comes in then Newcastle will almost immediately sell Danny Simpson to one of a number of clubs – possibly Reading.
And that could well happen, and will definitely happen if Danny continues to refuse to sign a new deal for Newcastle, with the club trying for over a year now to sign up the former Manchester United defender, and terms of around £30K/week being offered.
But there’s another way this could all end up, and that’s with Danny signing a new deal, and taking his chances at Newcastle, to fight for his first team place.
From what we’ve seen of Mathieu, Danny would have hard job of staying the first choice in that position, but don’t forget he can also play on the left hand side at left-back.
While it’s very possible the 25 year-old will leave Newcastle this summer, he’s been a very good player for Newcastle in their last three seasons of astonishing revival, after we were relegated in May of 2009.
The lad has played 112 times with two goals for Newcastle in that time period, when Newcastle were apparently down and out – well that’s what the press kept telling us – and yet finished in 5th place in the Premier League last season, and were even fighting for a Champions League position on the last day of the season.
We know Danny has his critics among the Newcastle fans, but should Danny leave he will still deserve enormous credit, for what he’s helped Newcastle achieve over the last three seasons.
We still hope he will stay – but he would need to sign that new contract, and then we’ll have players fighting for the two full-back positions on Tyneside, and that cannot be bad.
What do you think?
