Newcastle like to get good deals for their incoming transfers, and are willing to wait to get good deals, and they have shown in the past that if they cannot get a good deal, they are prepared to walk away and look at the next target on their list.
Mathieu Debuchy – deal falling though?
With Newcastle’s financial house being in much better order these days, with the financial results through June 30th expected to be good when they are finally announced, it was thought that Newcastle may loosen up the purse strings just a little bit this summer, and maybe pay one or two million over that their evaluation, if a good player is within reach.
A case in point is Mathieu Debuchy, with the French star telling Newcastle he will do everything he can to force a move through, so he can join his friend Yohan Cabaye at Newcastle.
Debuchy even failed to turn up for training last Saturday, but started training at Lille on Monday morning.
There has been news in the last day, that Newcastle have become frustrated with Lille because no agreement can be reached on the price, and the club are on the verge of walking away, and they may have already done that, to pursue other targets.
One point in Newcastle’s favor is that the player is very keen to join the Magpies, and the other point is that Mathieu has been a loyal servant and a good player for the French club, ever since he made his debut for them way back in 2004.
It doesn’t look good after a player has been so loyal and played 288 games for the club and scored 17 goals, that they may be seen to be standing in the way of his dream move, because of price.
Of course that’s not the way Lille will see it, and are simply trying to get the best price for one of their very best players.
We don’t know how this is all going to turn out, but be ready for Newcastle to walk away from the deal, and the latest news is that Chelsea look likely to step in and pay what Lille want – and Newcastle will lose out.
That could well happen, but if it does some Newcastle fans will be just a little frustrated and annoyed, that their club seems to have been so tight, when an excellent player was within their grasp.
Tottenham and Inter-Milan are also supposed to be interested in signing the player, if the news is to be believed.
What do you think about this?

lets bare in mind that if the reports are to be believed, lille keep increasing their asking price… if thats not being held to ransom then what is?
also, a player that can sign for another club in 6months for free… 7million is a lot of money to think waiting 6months and you’ll just pay 500k signing on fee
if you were trying to run a self sufficient company would you pay 7mil for something you’d get for free in 6months?
i wish some of us would just chill out and look at the reality of the situation

Comment #43I really dont want to criticise our transfer policy because its worked wonders but the club are being really stupid, especially with this deal. We must have had a budget at the beginning of the season, not only that we have freed up more than £100,000 in wages with smith, guthrie, lovenkrands etc released plus raked in £5m by selling forster and besty. £8m for debuchy considering how well he played in the euros is fair. A top class full back and this deal as we all know will keep cabaye at the club. I can understand the club are stubborn when it comes to transfer negotiations which is good so we dont fork out stupid sums like liverfool. However with this deal we should just bite the bullet and pay the asking price because we are the only ones that will suffer if we dont.
On the other transfer fronts I cant see us signing Anita. Maybe Douglas. I reckon Carroll will stay until january and then we might come in with a bid. Looking pretty bleak on the transfers this summer so far.

I know, so sad, but we did have a splendid season last time we were there, bounced back, bought some fantastic players and finished 5th.
Maybe we are going to do it again, only this time bounce back to 3rd!! Or, maybe, nobody has a clue what the hell the Management are doing and we all have to wait and see which fantastic players are in the team for us in August. Life is a bitch at times!!

Comment #48Les…At least then we’d fully understand the clauses 🙂
Bretton….Yes, it was a joke. Probably to the same extreme as people posting “if we don’t sign him then Cabaye is gone”.
Both statements are speculation. I understand, he’s more likely to want to stay if he has people around him that are his “mates”, but if barcelona come calling, do you think that would make a difference?
He was at Lille (with his mate) and wanted a better opportunity and left his club and mate behind to come to Newcastle.
Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see Debuchy at the toon and think the link up between all of them (Cabaye, HBA, Marv, Cisse) would be fantastic, but he won’t make or break our season and there are other RB’s out there if the club think the fee is to high. Which incidentally, the club have not publicly said, hence my “let’s not panic quite yet” statement.

Comment #50TADS – i can agree with you on AC’s form at the fools but what if you discard the past 18month? … How about what he has done when he was with us in the Championship and our first 1/2 season in the EPL? … For some reason i have serious doubts about Kenny’s coaching abilities and to be honest i think a proper coach could mold AC into much more then he is now (although i dont agree he is a one trick pony now either).
Not to mention the fact that when he ever had a good game for some reason he started on the bench again the following game or the kind of service (Downing??) he had. There are lots of factors to consider when passing such judgement.
In the end, in my opinion, a coach should be able to teach football strategy, movement on/off the ball and tactical discipline (technical ability to a lesser extent cause you are born with that) but you can’t teach power, height or strength. And AC is really not that bad on the ball as some say, its just that other players get lazy and hoof the ball to him which is also up to the coach to prevent. It all depends on how you build your team i guess…personally i prefer the kind of striker makes defenders shiver then a David Villa type for example. On the other hand…i prefer attacking midfielders to be quick and nimble and technical. Like i said though…it depends on how you build the team. I for one could see HBA, Cabaye and Marv playing behind a striker like AC(though not necessarily him) with great success in a 4-2-3-1 formation…but thats just me and my personal opinion.

Comment #51Easy lads, if Inter, Spurs or even Chelsea wants to bid for the player what’s holding them?
Newcastle doesn’t have an agreement with Lille that allows them first pick!
Anyone can bid for Debuchy, but it seems non have but us – many can speculate why??? Maybe because of the price Lille wants, maybe because Mathieu have said he wants to join us.
In the end Lille cannot hold on to a player who want to leave and in the end it’s all in Mathieu’s hands 😉

Comment #52Guys, I may be proved wrong. We may sign no one, finish mid-table, get knocked out of all comps early and face losing our star players in January or next summer. However, given our progress over the past 2 seasons, it would seem reasonable to expect the club has other intentions, so I’m willing to give them the benefit of doubt and play the waiting game with them and support the current team we have.

Comment #53eastend toon ….dont think that is the case re contract ..he has contract for another two year…i hope toon have made a proper bid of at £6 mill for a quality rb that wants to play for nufc…i like most fans will be upset if he goes elsewhere for less than £6mill after making his position untenable with requests for toon move ..pleased about good though..

Comment #55Thi story smells of Lille releasing this to try to get us to panic and agree the price they want because all of a sudden Chelsea are interested. Not saying it couldnt happen as they need a RB but no quotes or anything, sounds like a setup to force our hand.

Comment #56Ibiza, without being a board basher, and acknowledging the smart stuff they have done, i think a thread runs through their dealings which doesnt always work.
You see, if a player represents a good deal, then we are keen, even if the player would still have represented fair value for a higher sum. Thus, we seem to stall on Debuchy whom I guess is worth 7-8 million, even though that represents fair and reasonable value. Put it this way, if he was worth 10mill, and his contract was nearly up and price dropped to £7, we would be all over him!! At times you just have to pay up……and for fans to keep saying “in carr we trust” doesnt make sense ….because Carr will have recommended him! So if we trust Carr, get Debuchy. We have the money to do it. And dont offer derisory sums like 4mill for a player who is obviously worth more – it just makes NUFC look silly. If Spurs did it we’d accuse them of unsettling our player. In other words, would we have got Cabaye if he had more left on his contract , and therefore cost more ? Probably not. And this approach , whilst financially prudent, does not always mean you make the most of the trasfer possibilities out there.

Comment #58Munster…Agreed. What I’m disputing mainly is that we don’t actually know the following.
1) Lille’s valuation
2) Our valuation
3) Our offer
4) Whether it is a final offer
5) Whether we will increase that offer
It’s business and I don’t claim to be the best business mind on the planet ( I think I’m ranked 7th?!?! 🙂 ), but you don’t just offer what people are asking. If at the end of the day, we miss out on Debuchy as we wouldn’t increase a £4m (say) bid and he goes to Chelsea for say £5m, as imo, he would be worth that.
I just don’t believe anything we hear at this time and refuse to be drawn in to it or base my opinions on it.

Comment #61But jaysus Ibiza, if u dont want to be drawn in, you’re well able to lob your opinions around! 🙂 None of us are privy to negotiations, but I cant see us getting Debuchy for 5 mill. He’s just worth more. There is no point in “trusting in Carr” if we dont make strong and realistic bids for his top recommendations . Its no way to chase the Champs league…..I do agree though, that we are only guessing at waht is going on , but not all journalism is speculation , far from it….

Comment #62Munster….I think my opinions are along the lines of we’ll wait and see. I believe the club are conducting themselves appropriately but am also too old to believe in fairies.
Would you prefer I not comment unless I 100% believe of dis-believe a transfer rumour?
My earlier point is, I don’t understand how people can criticise the board when we don’t know whats actually happening.
Of course some journalism is based on truth…but which is the question?

Comment #64Brettoon @9 – the difference with Santon is his age – much younger so much higher sell-on value at the end of his contract.
Debuchy would be 30/31 at the end of his contract.
So, in your 5 minutes with the Board, what would your answer be to that?
If Lille look at their options – a disillusioned player, able to leave for nowt at the end of the season. Yet Lille could get £4-5 million for him now.
I also think that if Debuchy wants to leave so much, maybe he should hand in a transfer request (and lose his percentage).
Then again, he has been loyal to Lille for many years, so maybe they should not stand in his way.

Comment #67Its reported that we have offered £4.5 mill for Debuchy but Lille want an extra £2.35 mill which values him at £6.85 mill which i think is quite fair considering what a class player he is.I hope we just pay this fee and sign him because it would be a backward step not to get him on board. If we want to progress we have to get higher standard players and he is 1 of many we need.

Comment #68i appreciate we need to get value for money but there is a limit to where we can go with these strict rules, Debuchy is a very good player, will keep our best player (Cabaye imo) happy to stay and he will possibly save us say 5 more points than simmo – imo and no i aint got the stats to back that one up but better players help better results

Comment #70I really think Newcastles recent transfer policy (ins and outs) has been pretty much exemplary in the last few year (maybe Obertan is the expection but for 2m maybe not…)
The facts about the Debuchy as far as i can see…
1. He is almost out contract (drives price down)
2. He probably wont have real sell-on value (drives price down)
3. He clearly wishes to leave (no club wants to keep a player who doesnt wish to be there generally)
4. They have bought a replacemnet (signal they expect him to leave)
5. He has a emotional tie to NUFC through Cabaye which means we can be more sure he wishes to come here than other places
6. We have a decent right back so no panic
So all the signs point to the fact he will leave I would say. What the powers that be will now have to weigh up is the potentail that he could go elsewhere. Im quite sure they will have a credible idea if the Chelsea interest in real or mischeif. If real maybe it forces thier hand and they have to raise their offer, if not im sure they will hold out, and so they should.

Comment #71Come on Mike it’s only another 2,000,000. The fans on here say we need to spend the money and they are all in favour of another 50 on a season ticket and 2 on a match day ticket to pay for it. It’s ony 2 a game, nothing, and fans need to pay market prices now we are in Europe, just like at Arsenal. Come on Mike what are you waiting for put those prices up now!
