Newcastle have done well this season in signing some youngsters this summer, and we have already signed Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana, and both played the whole game last night in the 1-1 draw with Olympiacos, and Romain scored one of the four penalties in the 4-4 shoot-out.
Gael Bigirimana being interviewed after he first arrived on Tyneside
What a player this lad looks to be
Not only that but Gael Bigirimana was Newcastle’s best player last night, and he gave an all action display, cutting out through balls, blocking shots, and distributing the ball well from defensive midfield.
52% thought Gael was our best player last night, and he was followed in the voting by Amalfitano on 12%, and then the returning Steven Taylor on 10%, and Steven looked quite solid in that first half and of course he scored the goal.
Gael had an excellent game last night and we think Alan Pardew and John Carver must be pinching themselves, to make sure they are not dreaming – this lad looks so good at only 18, after having just arrived at Newcastle.
There’s still time to vote if you haven’t yet done so – but here are the results to date.

Comment #6Amalfitano?? He was very very average. Same with Vuckic, he didnt show anything last night.
The first team player ie Tiote, Cisse, Ba, Colo, Cabaye, Jonas etc all need to start playing minutes now, its all good and well playing the second team and giving them games BUT theres only 3 pre season games left.
Need to start putting out our strongest 11 from the start

Comment #7I thought Gosling was our best player till he went off. Cracking runs & passing in the 1st half hour

Comment #8Obertan and Vuckic have underperformed. Vuckic is still only 19 and has bags of time to improve but gabi is 23 and I think has to prove himself this season – especially in the decision making department.

Comment #12Classy journalism from the Express – even in the limited quotes they’ve put in nothing is mentioned about Cisse blaming pards for ruining his olympic dream.
Do these journo’s serious get pad for this. Pathetic.

Comment #13Thought Cisse was very unlucky with a great header then a shot off the post last night. Then he missed a pena lol. Hopefully the only miss of the season.

Comment #17Did a job for Coventry city not long back, the official from their media dept reckoned bigi would be going back there on loan… Asked him how good he was and he said he’d be our best player in a couple of years, I laughed at the time, starting to think he might have been on to something!

Comment #21I find it weird how opinions differ so much, I guess that’s te beauty of football! For example I honestly thought amalfitano looked great last night- lovely neat touches and looked to create and make things happen. He looks technically very good- surprised to read some of you thought he was poor/average.

Comment #22Vuckic is woefull will never make it as far as I’m concerned he is amazingly overrated, amalfitano wasnt in the game at all last night other than a few flicks here and there. Bigi was really outstanding confident quick to close down and his passing was top notch I can see him getting alot of starts this season alongside tiote. But we really need a quality left winger maybe marvaux will be the man but I would rather see some1 with real quality come in, and also a centre half.

Comment #24Amalfitano: obviously has the skill. Produced some lovely touches and quick passes.
Just seemed to lack urgency, dwelt on the ball and was caught in posession a couple of times.

He seemed to be everywhere, and not just running around headless chiken style. Some telling tackles and passes… a young Tiote.
How old is he, 19 ??

Comment #26From what i can see. This season is make or break for Gosling and Obertan. As it stands, Gosling is very close to breaking into the first team, while Obertan is sliding far far away.

Comment #28Sky Sports understands Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Swansea City defender Ashley Williams.
Magpies boss Alan Pardew is in the market for a new centre-half and Wales international Williams is thought to be on his wanted list.
Williams was outstanding for Swansea in their debut season in the Premier League last term and he missed only one game for the Welsh club.

Ashley Williams? Good signing. 1 of the best centre backs last season in the league.

Comment #30Being generous, I’d say Gosling has shown enough promise to continue pereverance. He has been unlucky with injuries.
Unfortunately, I’m beginning to think we’ve seen the best Obertan has to offer. We could do much better.

Comment #31I’m just getting this horrible feeling we will wake up and find carroll is back. As someone else said he did nothing to get liverpool or us in europe, so why is he demanding european football if he moves?
When he was here with benny, carroll was played through several times and just wasn’t on the same wavelength with his movement or his touch a la Cisse. For the money we could do much better than rescue liverpool from their nightmare, geordie or not not makes no odds.
We have cabaye and hopefully will get better defenders than willo and simmo so we won’t have to hoof it, but play to feet, with fast slick passing.

Comment #32Nicktoon @21 – spot on about Amalfitano.
I was really impressed with him, he’s got quick feet, a trick or two and for a smallish guy he’s not afraid to go in where it hurts.
Bigi was excellent and I’ll tell you who I was also impressed with – Shola. In the first 20 minutes he really put himself about and it reminded me of his last 20 minute performances last season. Shola will still be a big player for us this season as an impact sub.

Comment #34It’ll be like committing suicide if we don’t sign a defender. Williamson is a complete liability and it’s a fact that Williamson and Simpson cost us champions league football last season. We’d have players like Vertonghen, Giroud and Marvin Martin now if it wasn’t for Williamson and Simpson.

Comment #35Bigirimana is going to be an outstanding footballer. When Tiote needs to come off, i will be more than comfortable when this young lad comes on.
Gosling too is showing promise, he is also just young and had a horrific injury.
Saylor looked great, his goal shows what he will bring on top of good defending 🙂
