Demba Ba And Pappis Cisse Both Start Against Braga

7:57 pm, Saturday, July 28th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 252 Comments

Alan Pardew has named a completely different starting eleven for the game tonight against Braga,  from that which started last night’s game against Olympiacos, which ended in a 1-1 draw and 4-4 on penalties, and James Tavernier, Sylvain Marveaux and the Senegal strikers,  Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba all start.

Yohan Cabaye is on the substitutes bench and may get some playing time, but that could be 15 minutes at most tonight, but will depend on the type of game and the state of the game with say 20 minutes to go.

Sammy Ameobi also gets a start tonight as do Danny Simpson and Ryan Taylor, and it looks a strong Newcastle side, and  Danny Simpson or James Tavernier will play alongside Coloccini in central defense.

Dan Gosling is not included in the squad after picking up what is said to be a slight hip injury last night – and it’s good that’s his injury is not serious.

Everybody else who played last night is on the subs bench, and it would be good the get the win tonight.

Howay The Lads!!

Newcastle United (4-4-2): Steve Harper; Danny Simpson, Fabricio Coloccini (c), James Tavernier, Ryan Taylor; Sammy Ameobi, Cheick Tiote, Jonas Gutierrez, Sylvain Marveaux; Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba
Substitutes: Tim Krul, James Perch, Mike Williamson, Paul Dummett, Steven Taylor, Davide Santon, Gael Bigirimana, Haris Vuckic, Mehdi Abeid, Romain Amalfitano, Haris Vuckic, Shola Ameobi

Here is a link to the game for tonight.

    Hope its not a 4-4-2….

  • 4 josh // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:04 PM

This might be a biased answer considering its an nufc blog, but I was having an arguement with a few Ipswich fans today. Is it wrong that I’m a Newcastle supporter life long instead of ipswich? All my mums side are from Newcastle and since I was old enough to know what football was I donned the nufc shirt instead of Ipswich although I was born there. Just wanted a few opinions. Bare in mind my old man hates football. ( his dad was a toss pot so that explains the loss of football gene)

Looking forward to seeing marveaux in action

  • 6 Big Pappa Cissé // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:09 PM

    @ Josh

Na not really m8. I hate when people support a team just because they win everything. Take on of my mates for example, he supports Man United and was born and bred in Newcastle with no family ties whatsoever to manchester. Hence the name Glory supporter

    @ josh

You must have been ribbed to sh*t when we signed Titus.

  • 8 dmac // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:13 PM

Josh mate im a bit like you, born in scotland lived in newcastle for a few years but spent the majority of my live elsewhere. I support newcastle because my parents and family do. My allegiances lay solidly with the toon. I had a season ticket for 3 years and had to travel 300+ miles to the games.

Cant help where your heart is mate.

  • 9 dmac // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:14 PM

I forgot to mention that the entire family minus me are born and bred in newcastle

  • 10 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:16 PM

@josh I was born and bred in London to a German mother and Mediterranean dad, supported toon all my life, my grandmothers a geordie and my great uncle Charlie won an f.a cup fr the toon, we were season ticket holders for years, driving 4 hours every Saturday! Once the toon is in your blood your f@£%£d! In for a lifetime of misery with no parole! A team like no other!

This better be a decent match. This is gonna take up several hours of valuble drinking time ;)

    8:45 kickoff again boys?

  • 15 Dannyo // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:26 PM

    Lovin this lineup.
Imagine that we still have Cabaye, HBA, and Fergy to play, and we’ve done so well with a very, very young team.
    Love that.
Bodes well for the new season.
Chuffed to see Tav back along side Collo, we’ll see that more this season i hope.

  • 20 JP...from The Rock // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:36 PM

Good of ya Ed to put a link for the match, thanks-just when I thought this blog couldn’t get any better :)

Josh – I support the Toon and I am from Gibraltar lol Hardly any locals support the Toon and they all go for the favourites, ManUre, Liverfool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona, the typical. So I am of a rare breed over here. I guess you could say I love an underdog, although I would love it if this underdog could kick ass even harder than last year and finally win a trophy! :P

Follow your heart like I did and you’ll never regret your decision. And to think my friend tried to convince me to be a ManUre fan!

I am like Shearer, I’d rather stick to the Black n White flag than go for the Glory Glory Man United.

    Newcastle till I die!

Now for a smashing win tonight to lift spirits!
    4-0

@ryan2502 was the right back, Charlie Crowe! Inherited a signed team photo when he passed, holds pride of place in my office! Been quite lucky with Newcastle links as Neil Macdonald, Kevin Keegan, lee Clark, stevie Watson and Steve howdy are all good friends with various family members, means Newcastle family events are always interesting

  • 27 LGFUAD21 // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:41 PM

    Josh

Not in my mind. I have no family ties to Newcastle but my Dad lived there when he was younger. He’s a cockney. Im a Toon fan because a combination between my watching Toon games with my dad and a Geordie friend of mine when I was younger made me watch games with him.

So when it came to picking allegiances it was natural to support the team I had been following intently for a year

  • 44 Tsunki // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:52 PM

Ketsbaia9 – tell me, if you were a regular blogger on say the .co.uk blog, who had made up another account specifically to have a lark on other nufc blogs, would you own up to it or perpetuate it all the way to trolldom?

  • 45 Beardo Ameobi // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:53 PM

    Chasing shadows so far.

  • 46 Thump // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:55 PM

@Tsunki: I’m confused by how he’s on a wind up? He’s right. Tav and Jonas are out of position. You can make an argument for Tav given that Pards seems to think he’s a CB but even then you could make an argument for Raylor being out of position. Using a half point system, I’d say that comes to two ;)

  • 47 Beardo Ameobi // Jul 28, 2012 at 8:55 PM

And Tiote is having a ‘mare, up to now.

    No Tioté :(

  • 52 Thump // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:03 PM

  • 53 Tsunki // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:05 PM

Thump – I’m not talking about his last comment mate, just acting on a very tenuous hunch. I have advocated backing off him for his occasional wildly inaccurate statements as I tend to think he is just a bit, er odd. But I just want to eliminate the possibility that its a bit of smart trolling. He did get banned from another blog recenty you know?

  • 72 eastend toon // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:25 PM

we’re definitely playing better now… braga came out quite strong, played a high line and were chasing everything down… put us on the back foot but we’ve weathered the storm and coming back into it a bit more

  • 73 Dannyo // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:26 PM

Sammy, Marvuex, Tavernier are certainly all present for this game.

  • 74 Beardo Ameobi // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Is this a ”gentleman’s” game? Cos a swear we could gan absolutely raggo on these lads like. Cisse looks like he’s in about first gear, looks mentally sharp tho. Well played simpson gotta say

  • 83 Tsunki // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:34 PM

Ketsbaia – are you are .co.uk blogger in disguise?

  • 84 Cool Hand Luke // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:34 PM

tiote hasnt really got into his groove, id get bigi on, also need to get the wings sorted. Left hand width is non existent and sammy keeps having to cut onto his left foot slowing play. Simpson has been more effective on the overlap. Marveaux has been good, id have him further infield, sammy wide left and jonas wide right.

  • 85 jayphoto // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:34 PM

like that the lads are passing it out from the back! I’ve only seen 2 players try and knock it long and thats been simmo and r.taylor! Everyone else is playing it on the ground! Tiote and cisse look off the pace, sammi has left his right foot at home aswell! Marveaux just looks so comfortable on the ball! Like taverniers positioning too and the way he plays it out of the back!

  • 86 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:34 PM

Thought Simpson’s surprisingly done a couple of good things.

We desperately need a centre-half though along with an attacking midfielder, a striker, Anita and Debuchy/Cissokho.

  • 87 IFC.Toon // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:35 PM

Get Cabaye on some point in the second half. His through balls will eat these lot for breakfast.

  • 88 Beardo Ameobi // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:36 PM

    pbNc1

He’s making rash challenges, some good ones too, but mostly bad or missed, and has given the ball away in dangerous situations 3-4 times, as far as I can see.

Sometimes he’s too keyed up, I think.

  • 89 Thump // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:36 PM

@pbNcl: Cisse is still looking for match sharpness, I think. He’s in the right positions but it seems like he’s overcomplicating it. The lad’ll come good though, give him a few games and he’ll be ready.

Don’t think anyone can deny that the 2 best players for Newcastle have been Sammy and Simmo, with Demba and Papis making some nice interchanges.

Marv looks decent when he gets into possession, a very silky player on the ball. Tiote looked off the pace but definitely started putting himself about a bit more towards the end of the half

  • 94 geordiejamie89 // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:38 PM

Ameobi and marvaux best players of the first half

  • 100 thud and blunder // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:41 PM

Its simple, our first 11 need more minutes on the pitch as a team. Its all disjointed.

We also need more QUALITY signings. We shouldnt be relying on Tavernier at CB.

Its very worrying that Tiote, Ba, Cisse, Cabaye and Ben Arfa (for obv reasons) have had very little action

We only have 2 more matches, not ideal

  • 101 thud and blunder // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:42 PM

I agree, 4-4-2 with Ba and Cisse just doesnt work. What happened to the 4-3-3 that really worked for us!!

Just to keep Ba happy, its to the detrement of the side in my opinion

  • 102 MrToon // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:42 PM

Getting back to the supporters comment. I started following the toon back when adidas power soccer came out. I think it was on super nintendo. The Toon where unstoppable.

  • 103 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:43 PM

Can we please not second guess the management based on a pre-season friendly?

It isn’t about the score, it is about getting minutes and sharpness back. We will probably sign a new CB and RB at the very least so can we not make apocalyptic predictions purely because we aren’t tearing them to shreds?

  • 105 Thump // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:43 PM

@thud and blunder: If we have more quality, that may very well lead to more International matches. There has to be a trade off and losing key players for parts of pre-season is one of them.

  • 106 eastend toon // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:44 PM

lets keep it in perspective though eh… these are friendly games for our lads to get game time so they hit the ground running come the 18th… i couldn’t give a toss about the score to be fair, and if some players have shockers, best they have them now eh!

as for taking players off… thats the worst thing to do… let them make their mistakes… they’re warming up for christs sake!

  • 107 pardews plan B // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:45 PM

  • 108 papattack // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:45 PM

marveaux is class, i have to say ameobi looks like hes really improved too. definately think he’ll be starting more games this season.

collocini aswell is such a technically sound CB, i really hope him and saylor can stay injury free and continue where they left off last season.

  • 109 Thump // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:45 PM

@Ruddy: In fairness it’s a friendly tournament. I agree in principle though.

  • 110 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:45 PM

Y’know what forget what I said

Relegation clearly looms for us as we are going to stick with 4-4-2 just to keep Ba happy.

MA is going to sack Pards and replace him with Ronald McDonald.

Gabriel Obertan, a 23 year old RW who plied his trade at the famous Clairfountaine at first and went on to Man Utd, is looking like he’s losing his spot to 19 year old Sammy Ameobi, and LW/Striker, coached through the ranks at NUFC.

I love Sammy. And i hope Obertan will succeed, but it’s not likely anymore.

    just my opinion mate

  • 114 Nufc-Dom // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:47 PM

I agree with eastend toon, it’s miles better for us to play this way now as the management team will then be able to identify any issues and iron them out

  • 115 thud and blunder // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:48 PM

@ tump disagree totally mate…but hey thats your view

that Braga sub has some ‘fro on him

  • 117 Thump // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:51 PM

@thud: But that’s why we’ve lost Arfa and Cabaye. Obviously Arfa will start a bit later after the whole dressing room spat, but the good news is they play more football and train with the international team so they’ll naturally have less work to do to get to match fitness.

If anything, I’m a lot more concerned about our CB situation. We learned last season that it takes one injury to mess us up (and then one ban…).

  • 118 Beardo Ameobi // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:52 PM

Cisse and Ba, still yet to complete a pass to one another in a Newcastle strip, it seems like.

  • 119 Thump // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:53 PM

It’s amazing how much Sammy has progressed. He’s still very direct but his footwork has improved massively. I swear it’s the mohican.

    @Ruddy: Who’s being pessimistic?

  • 127 RonVanDam // Jul 28, 2012 at 9:59 PM

I watched the L’pool and Tots game earlier today. Damn L’pools passing is awesome. Even Carrol fits in and seems to working harder this time around. Still needs work on his feet. They will be a threat by the second half of the season when everyone gels together. It pains me to say this.

From my observations i dont think we’ll have a repeat of last season. I think we’ll mostly be around mid table with awful lot of draws

  • 128 eastend toon // Jul 28, 2012 at 10:00 PM

he’s a question to mull over

if we draw this game 1-1, and penalties end 4-4

then all three teams have scored the same amount of goals… so who wins the tourno?

  • 129 Thump // Jul 28, 2012 at 10:01 PM

@eastend: I think the commentators mentioned that yesterday. The pens would keep going until somebody cocked up.

  • 130 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 28, 2012 at 10:02 PM

    @Thump

This constant moaning “we need to sign such and such because such and such is rubbish”

“Why is Pards playing 4-4-2 just to keep Ba happy?”

“Ba and Cisse can’t string two passes together”

“There are only 2 games left before the start of the season, this is really worrying

Boo fricking hoo, I wish these boo boys would just shut up and support the team.

    @Tsunki

At least there is football to properly sink our teeth into and crush the negativity with results and performances. During silly season they have the upper hand…due to a lack of actual action haha

  • 131 Novocastrian66 // Jul 28, 2012 at 10:03 PM

  • 133 TorqToon // Jul 28, 2012 at 10:03 PM

Ruddy – Completely agree mate!! Certain people seem so negative and continually bitch and moan about this club…you wonder why they support the toon in the 1st place!!?! Surely Manc Citeh and all their billions are a better place?!

I believe, regardless of the results so far, we have had a very good pre season, at the end of the day it served a purpose of much needed playing time, testing out new ideas and settling in new and young players into game situations.

Let’s be reall fellas, I believe we WILL strengthen, the management and coaching staff know what they are doing and maybe we should trust them and their judgement rather than pick apart what we have! HWTL

  • 134 LGFUAD21 // Jul 28, 2012 at 10:03 PM

Just a note. One thing I have noticed on here that bugs me.

A few people (and rightly so) picked up on yesterday how Bigi committed and lost his man. This is true and contributed (key word) to conceding.

Yet everybody still critisises Simmo for his defending.

We all oan about Fifa managers and FM managers on here. But one thing Fifa gets right (which coaches the world over will agree) Is the new tactical defending system which is a lot more accurate than in the past.

That is a good way to explain Simmo’s defending. Which is why I have always rated him. Sure he lacks attack but in my mind. We conceded less goals through Simmo than we did through the centre and on the other flank last season.

    Q.E.D.

  • 152 elpaso_geordie // Jul 28, 2012 at 10:08 PM

Pardew has already said Ba will play 90% of his games up top through the middle. BA and Cisse do not play well as a partnership and never well. Very rarely they have started together for Senegal as well.
Id prefer to lose Ba to be honest and sign a striker / left side attacking player then we would commit to 433 next season

Good win for the lads but to be truthful, we where not great at all. Huffed and puffed through a large portion of the game. However Maveaux was EXCELLENT tonight and i can not understand for the life of me why Pardew didn’t tell the lads to get the ball to Marveaux down that left hand side as much as possible. He was our best player tonight. WTF has happeed to Cisse lol? The kid couldn’t hit a barn door with last night’s penalty miss and tonight’s dire performance. He made Ameobi look like a good striker haha. Cisse will get back into his stride once the season starts. Cabaye came on and was excellent as usual. Couple of players stood out but not the greatest performance. Good job it was only a friendly.

    So it’s Ba 2 Cisse 0 in pre-season. I see a pattern emerging.

Think we are forgetting our Ramadan blame game for the Cisse. I mean we did use that alot last year for Demba

Raylor and Marveaux were the best players for us by a mile. Bit concerned about Coloccini’s performance. Hope it’s just a one-off.

someone say Sammy is good, but i think he just average,
easy lost the ball away, long pass is not good.
And you can see Marveaux in the second half, he is good use the ball, skill & flexible, can know how to pass the ball teammate. he is different level with Sammy, Marveaux is a MOTM for me, i prefer use Obertan or Ferguson, is not Sammy~
