Newcastle Beat Braga 2-1 With Ryan Taylor Special

Newcastle won this game 2-1 and it was  thanks to another fantastic free kick from Ryan Taylor after 72 minutes  that gave Newcastle the win, after Demba Ba had put Newcastle ahead on 60 minutes with a penalty, which he missed, but put the rebound home>
And with the win Newcastle also win the 12th  annual Guadiana Trophy,  with 4 points from their two games.

Newcastle didn’t play all that well tonight but probably did enough to win the game, and they started very slowly for the first 30 minutes with Braga having all the possession.

It was 0-0 at the half,  but then on 60 minutes as Newcastle tried to raise their game, Marveaux went through into the box, and his shot was saved by the goalkeeper,  but then Newcastle got a penalty as Marveaux weaved his way through the box again, and was brought down – excellent play by Sylvain – and a clear  penalty.

Demba Ba’s penalty was saved by the goalkeeper low to his right,  good save, but Ba put the rebound home – and Newcastle were ahead 1-0, probably slightly against the run of play.

And on 67 minutes Sammy Ameobi had the ball in the back of the net again from a corner , but he was offside – just – but then almost immediately Braga pulled level.

The Portuguese side broke away quickly down the right wing and played some excellent one-two passes in the penalty box and Amorim’s shot wrong-footed Steve Harper and the ball  rolled slowly into the net.

On 72 minutes Yohan Cabaye was introduced for his first taste of pre-season for the French International, and almost immediately  from a free kick 25 yards out,  Ryan Taylor put the ball into the top corner of the net.

It was another brilliant goal from Ryan Taylor – and he seems such an improved player since Alan Pardew came to Newcastle.

On 82 minutes Sammy Ameobi was flying down the right wing and was clumsily brought down by Douglao, and would you believe it – but Amorim was sent off after his stupid vociferous reaction to the Assistant referee, as the Braga players thought the ball was out of play.

But he was rightly sent off and Newcastle were in the same position as last night, one goal ahead and the opposition down to 10 men and late in the game..

Newcastle basically hung onto the lead in the last 10 minutes or so,  but Braga had their chances to equalize.

In the last minute of added time Yohan Cabaye almost got a third for Newcastle after good work by Obertan and Vuckic down the right wing, but Yohan’s shot bounced just over the bar – and after four minutes of injury time the final whislte blew.

Newcastle won the game 2-1, our second win in five pre-season games.

A full report of the match will follow shortly – as we saw it.

Why can I see Ashley actually taking some poor buggers bridge and calling it our trophy?

Newcastle – Winnners of the Trofeu Internacional de Futebol do Guadiana! Beating last year’s Europa Cup finalists to it. A sign of things to come!

Good win for the lads but to be truthful, we where not great at all. Huffed and puffed through a large portion of the game. However Maveaux was EXCELLENT tonight and i can not understand for the life of me why Pardew didn’t tell the lads to get the ball to Marveaux down that left hand side as much as possible. He was our best player tonight. WTF has happeed to Cisse lol? The kid couldn’t hit a barn door with last night’s penalty miss and tonight’s dire performance. He made Ameobi look like a good striker haha. Cisse will get back into his stride once the season starts. Cabaye came on and was excellent as usual. Couple of players stood out but not the greatest performance. Good job it was only a friendly.

    So it’s Ba 2 Cisse 0 in pre-season. I see a pattern emerging.

  • @ Thump, it sounds so criminal when you put it that way. 😮

Anyone work out what formation we were playing? 442? Is it going to work with Cisse and Ba?

spuggy – aye collo was class, he would never have put that sort of performance in three years ago.

He was my MOM followed by marveaux, i said this week that he would be in my starting 11 on the left midfield slot. If he keeps playing like that AP has got to start him.

Spuggy, it seemed to be a 442. Will work for us with ba and cisse (provided they both are scoring as cisse was far from on form tonight, but ittl come)
We would have to play with 4 at the back with tiote just in front of him. Then cabaye in the middle with 2 wingers either side and ba and cisse in the middle. Essentially 41122 (424)
Can see it lining up like this
    Debuchy Saylor colo santon
    Ben Arfa. Marvueax/sammyobi
    Ba cisse

Only problem is hat that it means our midfield our very attack oriented so our wingers will have to defend a lot. It can easily move back to a standard 442 though without any fuss so gives us options infield.

Sorry peterwright, ur predictions are classed as retarded as you can’t even put a team out with the correct number of players in it!

Geordielad, sorry that formation would have us destroyed in midfield, Plus Cabaye was average in a 4-4-2 last season, only started to catch the eye when he had Jonas and Tiote behind him.

Plus in a 4-4-2 we play long balls more as the defenders have less people to pass to in the centre of the park as its easier for the opposition to mark our 4 midfielders, that’s why they end up launching it. Put an extra midfielder in and we can pass it on the ground more easily.
