There was some news that we missed yesterday, that Newcastle are being linked with Bordeaux’s 26 year-old highly-rated winger Yoan Gouffran, after the former club of Gabby Obertan said they will now listen to offers for the 26 year-old.
Yoan Gouffran – 26 year-old Bordeaux winger/striker
The player was born in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, France and is of Guadeloupean descent, and joined Bordeaux from Caen back in 2008.
Since then the 26-year-old has played 121 times for Bourdeax with 23 goals, and last season he was impressive with 14 goals in 31 appearances for the French club.
But we’re not too sure how true this report is , with Aston Villa, Everton and Sunderland (of course) also said to be interested.
Yoan is a very decent player, and Arsene Wenger is said to have been keen on signing the winger/striker four years ago when he was part of Caen’s promotion drive to the French first division.
But instead he signed for Bordeaux, who at the time were managed by Laurent Blanc, and a team to be reckoned with in the league, under the astute management of Blanc.
Yohan’s contract at Bordeaux runs out next summer, so he could come at a knock-down price, which is probably why Newcastle may be taking a look at the player.
It seems that Bordeaux would rather sell him this summer, then lose him as a free agent next summer, and that makes sense.
However, Newcastle have lots of wingers in Ben Arfa, Jonas Gutierrez, Gabby Obertan, Sylvain Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Romain Amalfitano and Shane Ferguson, but we do need somebody up front as an out and out striker, so maybe he could play a role for Newcastle there.
But we’d still be surprised if Newcastle sign this player.
What do you think?

Comment #3We were linked like a year ago with this guy? Not heard of him like but rumours are rumours..
Cracking comment on Carroll,
They should send Carroll to Norwich, not to play but to watch Holt, at least he might get an idea of what a target man should be doing in stead of standing around on the half way line.

Comment #5Don’t know too much about him but sounds like the sort of attributes we need in terms of a quick striker/winger. The only question if this is true is, how much?

Comment #6Better than Obertan anyway, if he’s in the last year of his contract and the club want to sell him are we talking 4-5m? That’s our normal prive ramge for most transfers.

Comment #11Looks like kets has stirred things up again. No one had a bad game last night, vuckic struggled but he wasn’t playing deep enough. If Obertan just takes players on now and then I think he could win over some of his doubters

Comment #12“Newcastle have lots of wingers” – out of that list on HBA has proven he is good enough to play on the wing, Amalfitano isnt a winger,
Obertan not good enough, or hasnt proved himself to be relied on yet
Jonas needs to be a DM now, not quick enough, not enough assists or goals to play wing anymore
Marveaux – hasnt proved he can handle more than 7 games so shouldnt go into a season and rely on him to play the whole season as its just as likely he will be injured by October and then we have no-one.
Sammy – Not proven
Fergie – hardly played.
So while you can say we have a lot of wingers, none of them have proven to be good enough for what we need as of yet, so we should be looking for someone to play here who has a proven track record.
“We need another CF” – disagree with this possibly, depends on what formation we play. If we stick to the 4-2-3-1 that looked so good then Im not sure we need a top international forward as they would be 3rd choice behind Ba and Cisse. Maybe a young, pacy striker who can also offer something from wide would be a better fit.
Thats why I dont see why we are offering so much for Carroll. To pay 13-17 million for a 3rd choice striker is insane, for that money you want someone who will be 1st choice in their position surely, not a backup.

Comment #15As Ed points out we have plenty of players who can play that position, but we do lack another option up front who can play wide.
But I think we should go for a U21; someone who can play a part when called upon, but won’t start many games this season.

Comment #16JDdubai, interesting points there. If Marveux could stay injury free he has massive potential and will in effect be like a new signing..

Comment #19Sign him up! Don’t know much about him, but can’t really go wrong with that goal ratio and small price. If it doesn’t work out we can always sell him for profit as he’s still young and talented. He’s also French and we know how much our club likes them Frenchies 🙂
