Pardew – It’s Simple, Steven Taylor Has To Stay Fit

3:14 pm, Saturday, July 28th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 106 Comments

It was really good to see Steven Taylor back in a Newcastle United shirt last night for the first time since early December,  when he injured his Achilles in the home game against Chelsea, and that serious injury put him out for the rest of the season – unfortunately for Steven and for Newcastle.

Steven Taylor – in action last night in his first game back after eight months

And it’s always hard to come back after you have severed that Achilles tendon, as Steven did, and the local lad’s been through lots and lots of rehabilitation over the last several months, and was in Portugal earlier this summer doing physio work on the tendon.

And he was back in Portugal last night and played well in the first half,  before he was replaced by Newcastle youngster Paul Dummett for the second half.

And to put the icing on the cake,  Steven scored Newcastle’s goal after 25 minutes,  when he rifled the ball in from about six yards out, and the lad who started his career as a center forward celebrated big time.

Unfortunately Steven’s goal was not the winner last night, as Kostas Mitroglou scored 11 minutes from time, after Olympiacos had been reduced to 10 men, and the resulting penalty shoot-out (5 penalties for each side) ended up 4-4, with Papiss Cisse missing Newcastle’s first penalty and Tim Krul saving Olympiacos’ last penalty.

Alan Pardew was pleased to see Steven back, and glad to see him scoring again, as Alan had this to say to the Shields Gazette today:

“It put a smile on his face.” “You want confidence when you’re coming back from long-term injury.

“It’s not easy, and to get a goal will give him a lift.” “They’re all big players, but Steven was very important to us in the first half of last season.

“He wasn’t available for the second half of the season. The big thing for Steven is very simple – he’s got to stay fit.”

The Newcastle medics are going to bring back Steven very slowly this summer, and we’d be surprised if we see him play tonight against FC Braga, when Newcastle are expected to have some of their stars back, like Fabricio Coloccini, Chieck Tiote, Demba Ba, Jonas Gutierrez and others.

But Yolan Cabaye may not get on tonight, and Ben Arfa will definitely not play in this game,  as he is back in Newcastle, having reported back to training yesterday.

It would be nice for Newcastle to get a win tonight.

Comments welcome.

Saylor would have been involved at the Euro’s if he had stayed fit all of the seasonm he will be massive for us this season. Hope he does stay fit!

Debuchy, Anita and Remy in please.

  • 2 DraperNUFC10 // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:18 PM

    First

  • 3 pbNcl // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:21 PM

Steven taylor is a legend. With him and collo fit we are botled tight. This is how I never expected another cb to be fair, maybe an up and coming but really can’t see douglas coming to sit on bench.

Get debauchy in and I’m happy

    Big up the crew

  • 4 ochytoon // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:21 PM

I assume this means no new CB unless he gets injured.

  • 5 kilcline // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:22 PM

    @ DraperNUFC10

Don’t you look like a prat.

Maybe we will go for that Dunk at brighton as a youngster?

  • 6 smithy434 // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:24 PM

Anita looks like a Cabaye type player rather than a ball winner, if Tiote went I would rather go for the same type of player.

  • 7 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:26 PM

Good god. It’s obvious that he has no confidence in Mike Williamson. Centre back is the most important area that needs strengthening. I think we’ll seal the Douglas deal next month. Got a feeling Debuchy, Anita and Remy will be the 3 that’s coming in.

  • 8 bambams // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:28 PM

not that impressed by Anita so far (channel 5 now ) and not sure if he would add anything. IMO

  • 9 pbNcl // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:30 PM

What is this match on 5? Is it a friendly?

  • 10 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:31 PM

Kilcline i highly doubt were goin for dunk now thats hes involved with 5 other team mates in a serious rape investigation

  • 11 pbNcl // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:33 PM

    Rapists should be hung

  • 12 kilcline // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:34 PM

Bloody hell, feal sorry for the brighton boy who got raped like! 9 out of 10 people enjoy gang rape.

yes it’s on channel 5 now friendly match. Anita playing for Ajax

  • 14 colwell // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:35 PM

Really surprised we didn’t sign Clyne he is so good for his age.

  • 15 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:35 PM

Anita’s awesome. We could end up going for Fanni.

  • 16 pbNcl // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:37 PM

9 out of 10 people get a real bad response for jokes of that appaulingly bad taste

Who looks like a prat now. Pal.

  • 17 pbNcl // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:39 PM

    Whoooooossh

Aye cheers man got it on now, bet pardys watchin an all haha

  • 18 bambams // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:40 PM

Clyne does look a decent player, we must have Debuchy otherwise surely we would have made more of an effort to sign him.

  • 19 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 28, 2012 at 3:40 PM

Not been impressed with this rodriguez lad defo not worth £7 mil!!
Anitas been quiet like, but seen him a couple if times n has always impressed

Bigirimana’s seems like he’s gonna be some boy like, another lad in midfield who looks like he’ll scare the proverbial out of attackers. Harsh tackles in all owa with him and mr T

MR T & MR BIG = brick wall

  • 25 Fostino // Jul 28, 2012 at 4:42 PM

how did paul dummett get on. i dont no much about the lad?

great to see vuckic, abeid, obertan, gail and roman getting so much action. how are they playing?

  • 26 Beardo Ameobi // Jul 28, 2012 at 4:43 PM

    Ciao!

  • 27 NUFCWill1986 // Jul 28, 2012 at 4:49 PM

@fostino he did well i thought. Nice and calm on the ball

  • 28 Dannyo // Jul 28, 2012 at 4:50 PM

Rumour that Shane Long has handed in a transfer request.
AP wasn’t happy that they didn’t take the chance last window…
    Personally think it’s rubbish.

  • 29 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 28, 2012 at 4:52 PM

Can see why we’ve made a bid for Anita. What a talent. Ran the show against Soton.

  • 30 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 28, 2012 at 4:53 PM

We should’ve gone for Castagnos. He’s signed for Twente for £4.7m.

  • 31 Big Pappa Cissé // Jul 28, 2012 at 4:56 PM

    @ Ketsbia

Dont rate him tbh like, all he did was recieve the ball and either pass it backwards or sideways

  • 32 WWYCD // Jul 28, 2012 at 4:57 PM

    Dannyo
I don’t see why Long would hand in a transfer request tbh I’d still have him in our squad though

  • 33 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:00 PM

That’s his job. Helped out in defence a lot. Definitely a must signing. Ajax’ left back looked good. That striker was nippy as well.

  • 34 Big Pappa Cissé // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:03 PM

    @ Ketsbia

We already have tiote and Bigirimana to do that. Its when Cabaye is missing we need cover

  • 35 NUFCWill1986 // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:05 PM

@big pappa thanks for that link, was good to see some of tiote behind scenes

  • 36 super magpie // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:20 PM

Long would be a decent backup for ba and cisse.
He has pace and played well for WBA until he got injured which is the risk of signing him.

However, I don’t think he would hand in a transfer request, nobody has been linked with him and west brom haven’t really sold any of their best players.

  • 37 geordie157 // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:21 PM

Dear Mr Ashley, here is a list of centre backs, Alderwiereld, Sakho, Musacchio, Zapata, Douglas, Tasci and Grant Hanley, now please go and sign one!!!

  • 38 Dannyo // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:22 PM

    @WWYCD
    I’m thinking the same thing.
Would be very strange timing to deliver a transfer request now.

  • 39 colwell // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:22 PM

    Ketsbia9

You must watch different games to everyone else, Anita was ok but ran the show? Really?

Then there’s the comment that Abeid is better than Cabaye?

  • 40 IFC.Toon // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Apparently Ben arfa isn’t joining up with the lads in Portugal and is doingw training in Newcastle anyone know why ?

  • 41 breno95 // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:25 PM

    Super magpie

Reading have made an enquiry for long but it was knocked back.

  • 42 breno95 // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:28 PM

He had a longer break due to euros then he has had to attend the hearing into behaviour at euros hence why he not in Portugal.

Xisco and Ranger to start tonight

  • 44 geordie157 // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:35 PM

    ……for the local pub team

  • 45 super magpie // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:38 PM

Reading would be a step back for him, but then again he used to play there and maybe he isn’t fully settled at west brom.

  • 46 geordie157 // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:39 PM

Wonder if Viana will feature tonight, still a decent player just came to us a bit too early and wasnt ready for the physical side of the game. Braga’s team is made of 60% Brazilians.

  • 47 pbNcl // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:41 PM

Xisco spotted with ranger over candlelight dinner ”were just really good friends” says the spanish superstriker ”nobody gets ranger like I do” he coos

Wot a load of s….e! Posts like that are pathetic and are the reason why many past bloggers don’t bother. Keep your futile and immature rubbish to yourself in future. Would be greatly appreciated

  • 49 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:52 PM

Even the commentators said that Anita ran the show in the first half. Abeid can be better than Cabaye. He definitely has the attributes.

We need a defensive midfielder to play alongside Tiote and an attacking midfielder to compete with Cabaye.

  • 50 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 28, 2012 at 5:56 PM

Viana deserved a better chance as did Boumsong, Diego Gavilan, Clarence Acuna and Patrick Kluivert (whom I thought did well in his brief spell).

  • 51 pardews plan B // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:01 PM

    I actually like acuña

  • 52 pardews plan B // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:02 PM

TThat’s it. My childhood footballer of the day is Clarence acuña

  • 53 eaststandgeordie1982 // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:02 PM

Acuna was an ugly git like but he was a little battler

  • 54 pbNcl // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:03 PM

Who you talkin to ya radgie?

    What’s your contribution?

Have you not got a sense of humour? Was it homophobic? No it merely pointed at the unlikely situation of a rumoured gay striker and a wannabe gangster having a cosy dinner. Jeeez man chill out wor kid. Just for the record I despise prejudice on all levels. This don’t mean my humour is sterile. My cousin is gay, I have mates who are gay. Your attitude towards it shows your a bit uptight sir.
There is no news, and if I want to come and have a joke about my two favourite (oh what a crease) strikers I will. Its a funny scenario if you ask me.

  • 55 geordie157 // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:04 PM

Viana agree, Boumsong no chance, plus we could have signed him on a free a year earlier which makes that signing even worse. Acuna worked hard and therefore got chances to play. Gavilan i’ve known much about, still around i think, possibly never settled? Kluivert at times looked good, but he had passed his peak and even after leaving us he never really rediscovered any form

  • 56 Beardo Ameobi // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:06 PM

    Breno95

How about you quit trying to dictate to people what they’re allowed to write on a public forum – miserable twat!

  • 57 pardews plan B // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:10 PM

Lets not argue boys. Its just a build up of frustration

  • 58 super magpie // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:11 PM

    Boumsong should’ve been given a chance…

    Are you serious??
You must be a troll, I don’t think there’s anyway someone could be as daft as you.

  • 59 geordie157 // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:13 PM

Agree, a bit of banter or humour surely should be allowed.

Its Eds articles, the debate, the banter, the people that make this blog what it is…….and i will use the word my Mrs says its “addictive” but then all things Newcastle are and always will be!!

  • 60 pbNcl // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:14 PM

  • 61 pardews plan B // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:14 PM

  • 62 geordie157 // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:17 PM

Talking of ex players, was Alain Goma actually any good? I can’t remember but he did go on and have a decent spell at Fulham.

  • 63 Fostino // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:19 PM

    most expensive flop team

    ?
    goma marcelino boumsong domi

    viana bassedas alan smith luque

    owen xisco

bench: cort, butt, geremi, bramble, Guivarc’h

    not bad team eh

  • 64 breno95 // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:21 PM

    None taken at all PbNcl.

As for Beardo u jumped up cheeky muppet. Only kidding kid. however I don’t dictate I just asked nicely but it could be more to do with the fact no senior signings made. Match on later after the spurs v Liverpool on ESPN.
Need a signing to hopefully improve content of posts

  • 65 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:27 PM

£8m for Boumsong was a strange transfer. We should’ve signed him on a free. Bad bit of scouting there.

    Guivarch deserved a better chance.

Domi did well for us, but should’ve stayed with us for a longer period.

Bassedas and Pinas didn’t contribute much.

Viana shouldn’t have been loaned out after his first season. I remember when he scored against England and then Alan Smith banged one in.

£5m on Marcelino was possibly the worst transfer in history as he hardly played due to a finger injury.

  • 66 pardews plan B // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:29 PM

@breno so o was right about the frustration on no signings

  • 67 breno95 // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:29 PM

Aye. Put it down to that.

  • 69 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:36 PM

Yar, google is fantastic. Be interesting to see if Marveaux misplaces one pass today. He’s an excellet player in possession. Marveaux and Anita will wear teams down and players like Cisse, Ba and hopefully Remy will get the rewards.

Franck Dumas also should’ve been given a better opportunity.

Maybe it was a mistake not signing Guiseppi Rossi?

  • 70 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:40 PM

Infact, he’s still only 25. Villareal went down last season, so I reckon we could get him for £5m.

  • 71 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:41 PM

Geordie157 goma is actually a top bloke! Hes a property developer now in putney/dulham area i done about 6 landscaping contracts for him, always chat footy with really funny guy got me tickets in the box for the fulham game (thanks alan :( ) unfortunatly he didnt enjoy his time at the toon he said it was a fantastic town with possibly the best fabs hes ever played for but didnt get on with players like dyer bowyer super al etc said it was very clicky in the dressing room back then and if you didnt get on with certain players you were basically out!

  • 72 breno95 // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:42 PM

Was there an option to sign Rossi when he came on loan? Good player who us out injured and may not be quite the same.

He’s out for a year with a leg injury or something. Good player but far to injury prone.

  • 75 super magpie // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:49 PM

I wouldn’t say Rossi is injury prone because he broke his leg, obviously it wont be as strong when he recovers but being injury prone is when you get injured constantly – Owen, Saylor, dyer etc

  • 76 davybtoon // Jul 28, 2012 at 6:55 PM

Dutch journo just been on talksport saying we hav told Erick peters agent that as soon as he’s fit we will sign him, n he also reckons we could get van der Weil for as little as 4mill if we want him, also the Douglas deal is being held up bcoz there is 3 agents involved all wanting there slice
