Sylvain Marveaux Man Of The Match Last Night

9:47 am, Sunday, July 29th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 48 Comments

French winger Sylvian Marveaux, who is coming back from two years of injury hell at Rennes and Newcastle, has so far garnered 57% of the votes in our poll for Newcastle’s Man of the Match last night.

Sylvain Marveaux, had decent game last night

Sylvain was the one who was brought down for the penalty for Newcastle, that led to the first goal, when he moved into the Braga penalty area and showed some tremendous skills on the ball, and was brought down for what was a definite penalty, although before that, and also in the second half, Demba Ba seemed to be fouled, but no penalty was given for some strange reason.

Sylvain showed some excellent skills on the ball last night, but he needs to be more consistently in the game, and was missing for portions of last night’s game, in which Braga were much better than we thought they’d be.

Colocccini had another sound game for Newcastle at the back, and is second on 11% with young Sammy Ameobi, who looks about seven foot tall these days, is in third place on 10%.

Can say this notion that we will only get a striker if ba leaves is total rubbish we are clearly lacking striker options

  • 2 Graeme // Jul 29, 2012 at 9:52 AM

I only got to watch the second half but Marvy looked a much better player than he has at times in the past!! Hopefully he can remain injury free and continue to improve, he could become an important player for us!!

  • 3 nimo // Jul 29, 2012 at 9:54 AM

We’ve got rid of 2 squad strikers think we will replace them by 1 quality.. Whether that’s Andy Carroll .. Remy or one of Carr’s wonder scouts i don’t mind but we need options specially for the ACN

  • 4 nimo // Jul 29, 2012 at 9:55 AM

N regards to someone else’s post bout my earlier post.. Id never spend 20mill on Carroll.. 15 @ a push.. We do lack height in the squad i feel though

  • 5 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 29, 2012 at 9:56 AM

Very composed and amazing accuracy with his passes.

He’ll be a star this season if he keeps fit.
Obertan looking much better than last season.

    Gabby is this seasons Perch?
He is a confidence player. The crowd need to especially get behind this guy.

Sing his name and suppress the groans if he cocks-up.

Sammy looking good too, lots of options on our wings this season.

  • 6 davybtoon // Jul 29, 2012 at 9:56 AM

Nimo good chance ba n cisse won’t b at acn this year as they hav to beat tiotes ivory coast to in a qualifier

  • 7 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 29, 2012 at 9:58 AM

    @davybtoon

Football’s a funny game. Cisse and Ba are match winners.

Ivory Coast will start favourites but Senegal have lots of quality players.

  • 8 davybtoon // Jul 29, 2012 at 9:58 AM

Obertan is good player n gets stick for very little I feel yes is final ball can b poor but who’s isn’t our squad it’s one of our major weakness the final product needs worked on with all our players

  • 9 bollance // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:00 AM

    Davyb

Only problem with strikers is they cost a lot! Solution this season may be to play one up top with 5 across midfield a we have an abundance of midfielders / wingers. Only problem is we don’t have a Lampard like midfielder who will get goals. Sigaurdson would have been good! Alternatively we could play hba upfront or at a push obertan.. But there would need to be a crisis. ACON will b a crisis!!

  • 10 davybtoon // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:01 AM

Hatem ya right but if we all had choice would tiote we would like to lose for the acn specially with liitle check n abeid looking the business

  • 11 GeordieDan // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:01 AM

Ha. It was pretty funny seeing how much taller Sammy was than their keeper last night.

He made him look like a midget. :D

  • 12 davybtoon // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:03 AM

Bollance you not think cabaye could b our player like that if he’s moved more forward n we had Anita to sit with tiote

  • 13 bollance // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:03 AM

I would go for niang from Caen as I doubt he will be massive cash, only 17/18 with lots of first team experience already. Only problem is he is on trial with arsenal so think it will b highly unlikely.

  • 14 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:03 AM

No of course I’ll be an Ivory Coast fan when they play.

Abeid and Bigi look excellent prospects.
Will they get the nod over Perch?

  • 15 davybtoon // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Bollance I think we could get remy for around 13mill n I would take him over carroll anyday

  • 16 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:06 AM

I’m quite happy with Jonas as DM. Prefer him there to at FB or on the wing.

Anita would be a huge step forward.
Can’t see us losing money as he’s expected to be a huge star.

  • 17 Toonboy_84 // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:07 AM

Everyone keeps talking about ACON. Losing Ba and Cisse.

There is a very go chance they are not going.

Senegal drew Ivory coast in the ACON playoff. One of them teams will not go. Therefore, we keep either the Dembas or Tiote during The ACON.

My money is on Ivory coast :)

  • 18 Toonboy_84 // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:08 AM

I should refresh more. I see this have just been commented on :(

  • 19 davybtoon // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:09 AM

I honestly believe debuchy deal is done that’s why clubs arnt looking at him, Anita has said how much he wants to join us but think this will happen near the end of the window along with petiers on deadline day after Dutch revealed we hav an agreement with his agent we will sign once he’s fit

  • 20 bollance // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:09 AM

    Davy

Really happy for cabaye scoring goals for France and agree if he played more advanced then he would get goals. Though after villa away at start of the season he would bag around 10 from midfield. How many did he actually score? 4-6? However cabaye looked like he had reached another level over the summer so really excited as to what he can do this year for the toon

  • 21 RonVanDam // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:10 AM

Saw a pic of the trophy we won. All i can say is LOL. It looks like a 70s antenna

  • 22 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:10 AM

Ryan Taylor over the wall. :-)

Just thought he should get a mention at least once today for his tournament winning goal.

  • 23 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:11 AM

It’s obvious that 4/5 new players will turn us into a champions league outfit. We need to show a bit of ambition and get them signed up. We know which areas we are weak in.

  • 24 bollance // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:12 AM

Is marveaux’s playing style similar to Steven ireland? Haven’t seen enough of marveaux to know but hoping someone could clear this up? I have herd a lot that marveaux is like Malouda and that in my opinion Malouda is not very similar to Ireland

  • 25 davybtoon // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:12 AM

    Bollance

That’s my point though last season cabaye was sitting with tiote so was deeper if we got Anita to do that job n move cabaye forward he would get over 10 goals

  • 26 davybtoon // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:15 AM

    Ketsbaia
Ya right but think ppl need to calm down by aug 31 we will hav those 4/5 players aslong as we get debuchy n Douglas b4 spurs I’ll b happy then we can get the rest after

  • 27 davybtoon // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:17 AM

As it stands Tav n colo are looking the best option at cb, willo not as comfortable as Tav n Taylor jus not match fit yet

  • 28 Rotonda heights // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:19 AM

    Nimo

    You say we lack height!!!

    Cisse is 6,6
    Ba is 6,3
    Shola is 6,3
Sammy is 7,0!!!(according to Ed, lol)

We don’t lack height, we lack another speedy, mobile and skilful striker. Maybe Remy can do that, but if Senegal get knocked out and ba stays it’s less of an issue and we can bring Campbell through gradually.

Always thought Marveux looks an intelligent player.

  • 29 bollance // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:20 AM

My theory on the transfer window

There are over 60 days if u include June to keep the fans interested. Some of these days are taken up by games and the rest are speculation. Last season we were very secretive in the transfer market. This year it has seemed like we have signed each player twice (for good it will be about 3 times as we thought he would sign last week) and have nearly signed about 5 others with low bids. As a fan this has kept me entertained. The whole Carroll saga has gone on for weeks now and has definitely engaged the fans who from gauging the mood on here has preoccupied the bloggers.

Personally think we have a very strong 1st 11 and significantly stronger squad from last season but still think we will add a few more to add competition and allow youngster to go out on loan. Look at the effect last season has had on tav!

  • 30 Toonboy_84 // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:24 AM

Apparently we are interested in Gregory Van Der Wiel

I think the lad from Caen is with Arsenal now. Not sure if it’s a done deal yet.

  • 32 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:29 AM

i got a funny feeling we wont be signing anyone this window. i’m ok with it but only worried about our defence.

  • 33 5Danny94 // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:30 AM

It’s weighing up who we need against who we want. We need Debuchy if Simpson doesn’t sign a new contract (although pushing Tav wouldn’t be the worst thing) and we need a young defender and a young striker who wouldn’t mind warming the bench.

This is why I don’t think we’ll sign Carroll or Remy. Even if we rotate our squads (which doesn’t seem to be Pardews style, but I guess he’ll have to adapt) I can’t see either of them being happy to play a “bit-part” role. Carroll’s just spent 18 months doing that at Liverpool…

Likewise, we don’t “need” Anita or any other centre-mids. Guthrie grew disillusioned behind Cabaye and Tioté. It’s better to push the younger players like Bigi, Abeid or Gosling. I’d even go as far as to say that we don’t need any more wingers. HBA, Jonas, Marveaux, Sammy and Gabby – and potentially Ba – are more than enough. And having Marveaux will be like having a new player.

I don’t think we’ve signed many new players because we haven’t needed to. We have an owner who doesn’t like spending over-the-odds on a players value. He definitely won’t sign a player if he isn’t absolutely necessary to the progression of the squad. That’s business.

It’s a Dutch journo though n what he says is good

marv looks 10 times better than ireland very composed on the ball with technical ability up there with the best. hes got quite an explosive turn of pace he reminds me a bit of silva.

  • 36 ArtyH // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:33 AM

I know I am going to get some stick with this comment but the penalty was bought, just saw the highlights and slowed the action down. Sylvain changes direction very quickly, both feet come off the ground and he brings his knee’s/legs up and contacts with their defenders outstreatched leg. Excellently done.

    Davy,

Sounds good on Peiters and Doulas too. I know Douglas has got 36 dodgey agents but surely we wouldn’t waste all that time watching him, then just give up?

  • 39 Toonboy_84 // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:37 AM

    ArtyH,

I noticed that last night. He basically made sure there was contact. It wasn’t a dive as such though. Would have been a pen all day long anyway.

  • 40 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:41 AM

Davy are dutch journis anymore reliable than the sh1te spewing tossers we have fir journos in england??

  • 41 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:42 AM

Marveaux was definitely looking for the penalty.
He’s got it perfected, beautifully sucked in the defender to stick out his leg and his dive was so subtle the ref had no choice.

    Quality cheating.

  • 42 5Danny94 // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:44 AM

Oops, didn’t mean to post it twice! That’s the problem with trying to do these things on your phone – never works!

  • 43 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:51 AM

    @5Danny94

You are looking at the squad free of injuries.
We need strength in depth and competition for places over what will be a gruelling season.

Most weeks we’ll be playing at least two games and they are close together.

Lots of knocks that would heal in a week will mean the squad needs more depth.
Debuchy, a CB (Douglas? Not sure) and Anita are a must for me.

  • 44 Rowan Milsted // Jul 29, 2012 at 10:54 AM

I’m delighted with the result (and any kind of trophy is a welcome addition to our limited collection) but having not seen the game, only the highlights Ed posted on the blog, I can’t really comment too much.

Sounds like Cisse has been a bit rough in preseason, it would be nice fior him to get a goal soon. I’m sure we’ll have him fit in time. Great to see Ba on the scoresheet again, reckon he’s going to have a big season.

The best thing for me is that all three of our injured players from last season – Taylor, Sammy A and Marveaux – have all played, and all played well by the sound of it. Sylvain really could be like a new signing this season, and if Stevie T stays fit we’ll concede less goals for sure. Sammy A is a great option to have.

  • 45 Hatem's better than Messi // Jul 29, 2012 at 11:00 AM

    @Rowan Milsted

Can’t believe you used “Sylvain really could be like a new signing this season”.

That’s Pardew’s line for August 31st when we haven’t signed anybody.

  • 46 jimmymagpie // Jul 29, 2012 at 11:11 AM

I know that i’m in the minority, but Colo is cr-p when the ball is in the air across our box, and not for the first time, once more commits the cardinal sin for any defender, and turns his back on an opponent about to shoot. he’s what we used to call ‘a fan-y merchant’, and will never put his body on the line like Saylor. We desperately need a big, strong, physical centre-back, to cover for Tayls, so hopefully this lad Good will step up to the plate. I was told last night that he should sign after the completion of his medical on Monday, and that things are close with Debuchy, but there has still been no agreement with Lille as at midnight last night. I should say that i am posting this from mr brother’s place on the beautiful Algarve having a nice holiday, and taking in the match last night, before having supper with my medic friends from the club. I’m also told that IF the club persue their interest in Anita, it will be as a left back, because doubts persist about Santon’s defensive qualities, and they are toying with the idea of trying him wide right, which the player would like. Also, all talk of trying to sign Loic Remy is total bol-ocks!

  • 47 Rowan Milsted // Jul 29, 2012 at 11:16 AM

    Hatem

Haha, it felt a bit cliche when I wrote it! Yeah I know what you mean, especially after the ‘one – maybe two’ new signings headline. Slightly worrying. But since he’s hardly played for us so far due to injury, and he does seem to be a real talent, it is kind of true (just a little corny).

  • 48 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 29, 2012 at 4:34 PM

Marveaux is a bit like Santiago Solari. He has pace but he does the simple things. When he used his pace he won a penalty against Forest and Braga. If he can stay fit, he should be starting every week and should be looking at breaking into the France side. He is better than Malouda and has a great footballing brain.

I always thought Raylor should start ahead of Simpson as he’s more influential. Simpson didn’t have a bad game yesterday, but we know we can get better.

Anita will be used to play alongside Tiote and will act as cover if Santon gets injured. Santon is the best fullback at the club.
