French winger Sylvian Marveaux, who is coming back from two years of injury hell at Rennes and Newcastle, has so far garnered 57% of the votes in our poll for Newcastle’s Man of the Match last night.
Sylvain Marveaux, had decent game last night
Sylvain was the one who was brought down for the penalty for Newcastle, that led to the first goal, when he moved into the Braga penalty area and showed some tremendous skills on the ball, and was brought down for what was a definite penalty, although before that, and also in the second half, Demba Ba seemed to be fouled, but no penalty was given for some strange reason.
Sylvain showed some excellent skills on the ball last night, but he needs to be more consistently in the game, and was missing for portions of last night’s game, in which Braga were much better than we thought they’d be.
Colocccini had another sound game for Newcastle at the back, and is second on 11% with young Sammy Ameobi, who looks about seven foot tall these days, is in third place on 10%.

Comment #41Marveaux was definitely looking for the penalty.
He’s got it perfected, beautifully sucked in the defender to stick out his leg and his dive was so subtle the ref had no choice.
Quality cheating.

Comment #42Oops, didn’t mean to post it twice! That’s the problem with trying to do these things on your phone – never works!

You are looking at the squad free of injuries.
We need strength in depth and competition for places over what will be a gruelling season.
Most weeks we’ll be playing at least two games and they are close together.
Lots of knocks that would heal in a week will mean the squad needs more depth.
Debuchy, a CB (Douglas? Not sure) and Anita are a must for me.

Comment #44I’m delighted with the result (and any kind of trophy is a welcome addition to our limited collection) but having not seen the game, only the highlights Ed posted on the blog, I can’t really comment too much.
Sounds like Cisse has been a bit rough in preseason, it would be nice fior him to get a goal soon. I’m sure we’ll have him fit in time. Great to see Ba on the scoresheet again, reckon he’s going to have a big season.
The best thing for me is that all three of our injured players from last season – Taylor, Sammy A and Marveaux – have all played, and all played well by the sound of it. Sylvain really could be like a new signing this season, and if Stevie T stays fit we’ll concede less goals for sure. Sammy A is a great option to have.

Can’t believe you used “Sylvain really could be like a new signing this season”.
That’s Pardew’s line for August 31st when we haven’t signed anybody.

Comment #46I know that i’m in the minority, but Colo is cr-p when the ball is in the air across our box, and not for the first time, once more commits the cardinal sin for any defender, and turns his back on an opponent about to shoot. he’s what we used to call ‘a fan-y merchant’, and will never put his body on the line like Saylor. We desperately need a big, strong, physical centre-back, to cover for Tayls, so hopefully this lad Good will step up to the plate. I was told last night that he should sign after the completion of his medical on Monday, and that things are close with Debuchy, but there has still been no agreement with Lille as at midnight last night. I should say that i am posting this from mr brother’s place on the beautiful Algarve having a nice holiday, and taking in the match last night, before having supper with my medic friends from the club. I’m also told that IF the club persue their interest in Anita, it will be as a left back, because doubts persist about Santon’s defensive qualities, and they are toying with the idea of trying him wide right, which the player would like. Also, all talk of trying to sign Loic Remy is total bol-ocks!

Haha, it felt a bit cliche when I wrote it! Yeah I know what you mean, especially after the ‘one – maybe two’ new signings headline. Slightly worrying. But since he’s hardly played for us so far due to injury, and he does seem to be a real talent, it is kind of true (just a little corny).

Comment #48Marveaux is a bit like Santiago Solari. He has pace but he does the simple things. When he used his pace he won a penalty against Forest and Braga. If he can stay fit, he should be starting every week and should be looking at breaking into the France side. He is better than Malouda and has a great footballing brain.
I always thought Raylor should start ahead of Simpson as he’s more influential. Simpson didn’t have a bad game yesterday, but we know we can get better.
Anita will be used to play alongside Tiote and will act as cover if Santon gets injured. Santon is the best fullback at the club.
