Newcastle Likely To Turn To Erik Pieters Again

Erik Pieters has been out of action since mid April, with a hairline fracture of his foot, and he didn’t make the Dutch squad for Euro 2012 due to that injury.

Erik Pieters – Newcastle could well renew their interest in this Dutch defender

The Dutch International left-back was a big target of Newcastle’s last summer, but he limped off the field during his side’s 2-1 defeat at home to RKC in April, and is only coming back to full fitness, and could be fully fit again in a few weeks time.

And for the first time this summer there are reports coming out of Holland that Newcastle want to open talks with PSV Eindhoven about the full back, who can also play center-back.

Dutch journalist Marcel Van Der Kraan has told TalkSport that Newcastle are again interested in the defender, but naturally want to ensure he has fully recovered from his foot injury.

This lad turns 24 in early August and he could also help to solve the center-back position, until youngsters like Curtis Good and Remi Streete come through the Development ranks, which should be within a year or two.

Pieters has always been keen to come to Tyneside, and of course he is friends with Dutch and Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul, and they have played together for the Dutch side.

The news is today Erik will be meeting with a specialist,  and if he gets the all clear on his injured foot, it wouldn’t surprise us if Newcastle make another  bid for the defender.

And then Newcastle could forget about Douglas of FC Twente, and Pieters would only cost a couple million more, if that, and can play left back as well as center-back.

For the record, since joining PSV from Utrecht in 2008, Erik has played a total of 135 times for the Dutch club.

What do you think?

Prefer him to Douglas, after watching a few clips of Douglas on youtube I can’t help thinking he would be a massive liability with his temprement.

There was a year I went for a holiday to the Philippines over the summer, stayed away from the internet and in a country where football doesn’t, or barely exist, I stayed away from transfer rumours and expectations. When I returned, we signed Antoine Siberski.. I feel like doing the same this year but I rather not.

Grafton83 has echoed many of the comments I’ve heard about Douglas. We get our fair share of send-off scares with Tiote as it is, not sure we want someone with a short fuse in our backline.

So if Douglas is still our primary target, I’m open to any alternatives.

Yes well We need to get bodies into the club so that the horrific losses of 5-0 do not occur again this season. The fact that we are in Europe and hopefully does well in the cup, can add up to 60 games and more… We need Debuchy, Pieters Douglas and Anita into the team to sort out the problems on the defence. The need of new strikers is evident, John Guidetti and Jordan Rhodes of Huddlesfield would be good understudies to the senegalese as well as prompting up goals. Yes we have several youths coming up with Street, Good, Tavener, Bigirimana, Inman and Campbell coming up from the youth. Yes they should be added all of them into the first team, but the changes are needed so please get em sorted,…….

Then again the same could be said about Ben Arfa’s temperament before he arrived; he was immature and argubaly that was Hatem’s only downfall, much like how it seems to be with Douglas. Now I don’t know about you lot but I’d say it’s easier to change someone’s mentality under the right man-management than it is to completely rehabilitate and free a player from injuries. Pieters, despite looking like a decent player, seems to be crippled. I’m playing devil’s advocate a little bit here but I find it kind of ironic a lot of you would go for Pieters over Douglas so simply.

If the news is true and we do get the guy though, would give us valuable supply at LB. Still think Santon would be more potent down the right where he can cross more easily as he’s predominantly right-footed and we’ve a distinct lack of left-footers in the squad.

Replying to the 500 odd commented post below. Ketsbaia is a troll and a wind up merchant. I actually think he’s a very good one because most of the stuff he comes up with is utter bollocks and we all know it (ie Scharner) but he could come up with even more rubbish and he’d definitely gets a reaction out of most of you and that probably keeps him amused. It amuses me to watch you all get upset. Remember folks. Obvious troll is obvious.

Kets9. Next transfer target you mention should be someone like Charlie Adam or Stewart Downing. That will set the cat amongst the pigeons.

The list of players we’re not linked too is probably shorter than the list of internet rubbish bandied about on a daily basis.

The next 2.5 weeks is going to be unbearable.

back to Pieters now. Might as well just say we are going back to Sol Campbell and Kluivert..

Boring. And we have about 30 days left. I don’t think this was the plan of Pardew and Ashley.

Hmm…so were back to rehashing old stories i see. Havent logged in over the weekend and i was hoping for some good news but not to be it seems.
Having said that, Pieters would actually be a good buy since he would play LB(Santon as RB) and also cover for CB in the event Saylor gets injured and have Santon and Simmo (if he is staying) play as FB’s.

Toon73 – where did the Guidetti thing come from? … promising lad but are we even in for him? … cause all Ed’s other article says is that “we’d like if NUFC went after him” or some such which isn’t saying much.

If we eventually manage to get Debuchy and a striker i would be happy. I would like a CDM (Anita maybe) also but Gutti can play next to Tiote in the middle if we play Marv on the wing and that wouldnt be too bad. And ofc then there’s the CB slot but depending on how long Saylor lasts before injury and how well Willy, Tav or even Good can cover we might or might not make a signing… come to think of it, we might wait till January for it and depending on the situation act accordingly.

I think it is unlikely that we will sign Pieters, considering that he has stated on twitter that he is wearing a protective boot for the next 2-3 weeks and then has an appointment with his consultant on 27th August!

I still think the first team players we should sign are:

    1. Willy Boly
    2. Mathieu Debuchy
    3. Jeremain Lens

@toon smart if anything that makes us more likely to sign him. Gambling on a player who has had a couple of injuries. Signed for a bit below the odds. Its what ash does

toon smart – i actually like your first 2 players. Mathieu is already an established player and Boly looks promising…dont know much about him but numbers say he’s seen a fair share of starts in ligue 1 and at 1,91m he would improve our threat on set pieces and such. Can’t say i like Lens much though…not a great record as far as goalscoring is concerned and he hasn’t impressed me much overall. If we do sign anyone from PSV i’d prefer Toivonen ten times over.

that’s why I said ‘hopefully’, we’d be crazy not to be at least interested in Guidetti. There were a few reports on him a few weeks ago but news has died down.

A cheaper option than Carroll and Remy.

I think “reports” is saying a bit much…rumors more like it but i get what you’re saying and like i said i agree he would be a good signing. However, providing him 1st team footy might prove difficult for us…depending on how many games we end up having this season and what formation we play…we’ll see.

yep Toivonen is another striker I’d be in for..and cheap

    Debuchy 7.5m
    Toivonen 4.5m
    Anita 5m

17m all up minus the 5m we got from Best & Forster so net 12m with some great additions to the squad. Give me the finances of the club for 24hrs that’s all I’d need 🙂

It all comes down to price here. If big mike gives us the fund then I know the team will pick up the right signings.

    My opinion is we should sign;

Erik Pieters – great defender, versatile, will settle well with Tim Krul helping out (aswell as ensuring we keep hold of our No.1!) And with people saying he is injury prone – that’s not entirely accurate. He broke his foot and the treatment and rehab he had was insufficient for what he needed, therefore he damaged it further. Had he OUR kind of treatment he would be back by now.

Douglas – One of the best defenders in the Dutch league for the past 2 seasons. Strong, good in the air, a leader and not exactly slow. Yes there are ??’s over his temperament but with Pards man management he can tame the beast (a la HBA)

Debuchy – Pretty much deal done and an upgrade on our current crop. Plus beneficial to keeping the dream boat.

Another forward / striker – Carroll, Phillips. Both these players add a different dimension to our game, Phillips adds pace and can play wide of a midfield 4 or wide of a top 3. And AC (don’t shoot me down here) would add much needed depth and steel to our attack. He is a beast in the air, picking off deliveries from cabs, marv etc. plus holds the play well and very much has a point to prove. (although at £20m – the ridiculous valuation prices us way out of it!)

Like I said lads it IS just my opinion! Be nice 🙂

And for the record, depending on how quickly Pards and carver feel Bigi can be introduced to first team affairs, I don’t see an immediate need for Anita. If they believe he is still way off (which I doubt!) then could look at Anita and play 2 holding mids with debuchy and santon bombing on. 4-2-3-1

We probably don’t quite have the right players for a 4231 yet. I suppose it depends on who eventually comes in. Looking at who we have, and who we’re supposedly after, then I’d say pards is looking to play 433 and 442.

    Debuchy? Staylor colo santon
    Cabs tiote jonas
Hba (ba or cisse) marveaux (or another fast attacking winger)

    OR

    Same gk and back 4
Same mid 2 with any 2 of our wide midfielders (hba, marv, jonas, obertan)
    Ba and cisse up front.

Markaccus – i disagree. All we would actually need for 4-2-3-1 is 1 other CDM. And like i said before, Jonas could cover that given his work rate. So if we would only sign Debuchy this summer i dont think this would look bad:

    —————Krul————–
    Debuchy—Saylor—Colo—Santon
    ———Tiote——Jonas——–
    HBA——–Cabaye——-Marv
    ————-Cisse/Ba————

    just my opinion ofc…

I think your right we don’t look bad and even if we only sign Debuchy.

I know you are fond of the 4-2-3-1 formation and so am I, but I still think we need to mirror the midfield triangle so you have a def mid and two center mid.

Or else we are going to look a whole lot like France; out of balance, no open space and way to exposed. Plus Cabaye look the best in that position 🙂
