Erik Pieters has been out of action since mid April, with a hairline fracture of his foot, and he didn’t make the Dutch squad for Euro 2012 due to that injury.
Erik Pieters – Newcastle could well renew their interest in this Dutch defender
The Dutch International left-back was a big target of Newcastle’s last summer, but he limped off the field during his side’s 2-1 defeat at home to RKC in April, and is only coming back to full fitness, and could be fully fit again in a few weeks time.
And for the first time this summer there are reports coming out of Holland that Newcastle want to open talks with PSV Eindhoven about the full back, who can also play center-back.
Dutch journalist Marcel Van Der Kraan has told TalkSport that Newcastle are again interested in the defender, but naturally want to ensure he has fully recovered from his foot injury.
This lad turns 24 in early August and he could also help to solve the center-back position, until youngsters like Curtis Good and Remi Streete come through the Development ranks, which should be within a year or two.
Pieters has always been keen to come to Tyneside, and of course he is friends with Dutch and Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul, and they have played together for the Dutch side.
The news is today Erik will be meeting with a specialist, and if he gets the all clear on his injured foot, it wouldn’t surprise us if Newcastle make another bid for the defender.
And then Newcastle could forget about Douglas of FC Twente, and Pieters would only cost a couple million more, if that, and can play left back as well as center-back.
For the record, since joining PSV from Utrecht in 2008, Erik has played a total of 135 times for the Dutch club.
