Good news just posted on the Newcastle web-site, that the club have signed 19 year-old Australian center-back Curtis Good, on a long six year deal.
Curtis Good signs six year deal at Newcastle
The former Melbourne Heart defender has signed a long term deal on Tyneside, and it had been known for several weeks that he would be signing for Newcastle, but presumably he passed his medical today and signed along the dotted line.
The first team squad should be returning from Portugal today, so he will get a chance to join up with them, maybe tomorrow at training, for the first time.
And we would expect that Good will get his first game for the first team on Saturday night, when Newcastle play Den Haag in Holland, for their second last pre-season game of the summer.
Good is a very highly rated youngster, and gained his first cap for the Australian U20 side earlier this summer, but is expected to be initially part of the Newcastle Development squad, but could get a quick promotion to the first team squad, if he impresses in training.
On the web-site Newcastle said the following:
“The club wish to thank Melbourne Heart for its professionalism and cooperation throughout the transfer.”
So it seems the Melbourne club have handled the negotiations very professionally, and that’s to their credit. The fee was undisclosed but thought to be around £400K, and he joins Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana on Tyneside.
It’s great to welcome Curtis to Newcastle, and we hope he has a great career ahead of him for Newcastle United.
Comments welcome.

Well, that’s one Defender in the building, at last. Now we just need the the first team FB and the CB and things will look a hell of a lot better for next season!!

So that’s two Aussies, two Argies, two ameobi’s, two demba’s, two Taylors, ok i’ll stop now.

I hope he is Good!
Just listening to Australia – Manic Street Preachers in celebration of this signing. It will make a great song for a compilation video of all his best moments in a toon shirt, of which I am sure he’ll have many.
Good luck son!

Haha, possibly. Lille have probably pissed us off.
Anyway, welcome Curtis Good. Hope you’re better than Willo lol

6 year deal! The lad must have really impressed on his trial. I have every faith in our scouting system though and if he has the same sort of impact as Bigirimana and Amalfitano then we are onto a winner! Here’s hoping we can get Debuchy, Anita, Douglas and Carroll/Remy signed on the dotted line and I will be a very very happy man

Has anyone heard anything about a Bordeaux winger called Gouffan. Could be good having two pacey wingers with plenty of competition, Marveaux, Ben Arfa, Obertan, Jonas…..
I reckon though Spider could play a more defensive midfield role like he did towards the end of the season, he is composed, skilful and reads the game pretty well….we just need some pace on the flanks I reckon?……
22 JackButler // Jul 31, 2012 at 1:50 PM
davy – The likes of Biggi and Good are classed as being part of a development squad, its in nameonly
23 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 31, 2012 at 1:50 PM
We are completely overhauling our development team. Like a breath of fresh air. Hope the 3 players make it big at our club.
Now where is the world class player in defense we need who would walk into the first team like NOW! For e.g Debuchy
24 davybtoon // Jul 31, 2012 at 1:50 PM
Tavernier n sammi are 20year old n both quality players n they only got 3 year deals, so that fact this kid got 6year deal at 19 gives some indication of how good he will be
25 Dannyo // Jul 31, 2012 at 1:52 PM
I am probably getting ahead of myself here, so i’m saying it before anyone accuses me of getting ahead of myself
Getting a strong backbone of young players is certainly in the making. Seeing as Tav looks pretty comfy at CB and only will be getting better with experience, and this aussie lad getting a MASSIVe 6 year deal from the getgo, surely AP and crew must rate him quite highly already.
So the question is, do we need a first team CB? It’ll only diminish the chances for Tav and possibly Good if he’s Curtis enough…. I mean good enough
26 Toon1978 // Jul 31, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Really canny signing but i hope this ain’t the signing Pards was talking about the other day coming in this week. We really need to stop beating around the bush and start getting some first team players through the door. Debuchy, Douglas as well as Good would really strengthen us in defence big time. Anita would also be a good capture but i believe that one is a no go. As for a striker, maybe Carroll or Remy.
27 JackButler // Jul 31, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Well if Good is as good as everyone thinks he is, with Tav and young Streete already at the club and hopefully Fergie going to stake a claim in the long term with Krul thorwn into the mix, thats four of our back five sorted for the next ten years

33 ck1978 // Jul 31, 2012 at 1:58 PM
I know we’ve been linked with gouffran and we do have a lot of wingers these days but I’d like to see Scott Sinclair brought in, young, English, fast, lots of skill with a good eye for goal…. just saying but he hits all our criteria. Could well be available for around £6-7 million. I’m sure him and Ben arfa charging down the wings would strike fear in many a team ????

I’d love us to get Griezmann but I think we’d easily be looking at £10-12 million for him and for someone still very young I don’t think Ashley would risk him. Top marks for ambition though, I’ve followed that kid for 2-3 years now and he is definitely top draw ????

Australian clubs will never get in the way of letting their youngsters leave for European clubs
They want young up and coming stars to develop in the best possible European leagues and hence dont do any of the crap we see when we negotiate with snotty nosed small timer teams in Europe
Welcome on board Curtis!
50 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Geordie157 @12…Should we be expecting a flood?
So, everyone happy we have another player “over the line”? This was seemingly a straightforward transfer and took quite a while, perhaps we can all relax a little with first team signings that are probably a little more complex? Perhaps?
Confidence is high people. Get ready for another cracking season for the Toon.
51 Kyo // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Can’t believe we haven’t signed Debuchy yet tbh.
What are Lille and Ashley playing at?
52 geordie157 // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:17 PM
The dev squad is looking good, hopefully the likes Dummett, Alnwick, Richardson, Newton, Moyo, Inman, Campbell etc can push on too. Heard a few people mention that Esteban Lopez could be another to watch in a few years time.
53 JackButler // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Kyo – The Debuchy deal is political now, the player wants to leave, the club are willing to sell for the right price but the manager is determined to keep hold of the player.
Patience

64 JackButler // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:33 PM

I think we should look at a young striker to develop, Ba, Shola and Cisse are 27+, Xisco is best forgotten about and Ranger is a total waste of space who can’t get his life in order, not suggesting we spend massive money on one
65 hotdog // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:34 PM
WWYCD – Yep i think he will go with one up front and switch Ba and Cisse we have alot of games at the start of the season.
On Ba’s contract, is the clause of £7m just for this year or do we have the same slava next year?

Aye maybe but we have Vuckic, Sammy, Campbell and had that kid on trial from France (Koura or something) not sure we are in the market for another striker though Id love it if we signed another one haha
hotdog
It does seem that we are heading towards 433 or a 4231 depending on the game
I am pretty sure the Ba clause ends tonight and once its gone its out of his contract judging by the things that has been written about it so far, I doubt we would allow it to be a rolling clause year on year just invites speculation
70 hoppernufc // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Jb- I agree we need a young fast striker who can be a different option to the other three strikers we’ve got
71 Kyo // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:39 PM
I doubt we want Sturridge. His wage demand would probably be high coming from Chelski.
72 WWYCD // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:40 PM
Would Sturridge go from bit part player at the European champions to being bit part player at former Npower champions Newcastle united (with smaller wages most likely)? Something tells me no

75 naptoon // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:41 PM
there has never been any concrete info on bas clause nothing confirmed or denied by club or player other than there is a clause of some sort. the general opinion is that its a 7mill release clause of which ba would receive half however at midnight that clause is null and void meaning he would be subect to normal transfer conditions. again though nothing official.
76 JackButler // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:41 PM
I was thinking of a Bellamy type striker (without the shitty attitude that is) so that would rule out Sturridge, but someone with pace who will offer something different to what we already have

81 JackButler // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:46 PM
Would anyone really want Sturridge?
Tbh I’d put him in the same bracket as Hoillett, great talent but has an attitude that we don’t need in our dressing room, our team spirit has been a massive factor in what we have done/doing
82 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jul 31, 2012 at 2:49 PM
JB…Agreed. He is a talent, no doubt, but his current issue at Chelsea is either sitting on the bench or not being played CF. How will that change with us?
At least at Chelsea he get’s more money and a better chance of silverware.
Before we signed Cisse, I was well up for signing Sturridge, that boat has sailed far away in to the sunset for me.

You not sharing Ibiza?? and how do you get in this Hall of Fame
102 croftus5678 // Jul 31, 2012 at 3:08 PM
dont think any striker that comes in will be “3rd choice” as such as cisse and ba can not play full season with afr nations and european games as well as cup games so there is plenty of games to get 1st team opertunity’s at our club and thats without injuries and suspensions (ramadan) ect ect.
and the pay cut …hmm depends on his ambition i suppose and how the club is at convincing the player to drop his wages.
to me it sounds like he wants to make something of himself and chelsea play him as winger when he does play..well we have a very good attacking options that can link up and supply the amunition for goals maybe thats enough to convince him that we can make a star of him ?.
dont think we have actually been linked with the lad tbh but i just would not be disapointed if he did sign for us.
103 geordie157 // Jul 31, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Remy or Sturridge? I’d choose Remy, but i can see us moving for a striker in the 5mill price range, someone with pace and can play out left ideally, as he’s been mentioned earlier maybe Scott Sinclair does fit the bill??

croftus – Do you really think those playersyou mention were on the radar of Europeans elite, i dont think so. Also its not negativity its realism. Look at it this way if we were playing in the Champions League this year do you think we would be in for Van Persie? Not a chance Ashley will still keep buying £5-£10 million pound players but may pay more in wages due to the increased revenue. He has had his fingers burned by the Xisco’s of this world and a business guy like that does not make the same mistake twice. Finally, you cut me im black and white so supporting another team is a big no no im afraid

Signing Debuchy wouldn’t prove anyone wrong though. The fee’s mentioned (or speculated should I say) are within the £5-10m bracket.
I would lean towards that we will sign him…if I had to make a guess.
130 WWYCD // Jul 31, 2012 at 3:34 PM
Debuchy doesnt fit out current transfer policy either really resale value wont be huge and he isnt young plus the transfer is very public

Yo…A good point. Realistically, by the time we’ve used him up there won’t be much re-sale. Although I’m sure there will be a team in a few years time willing to pay what we paid, as long as he performs well. Or maybe he’ll play out his days at SJP.
Hotdog…Seriously mate, wasn’t it you who said think before you post? Time to get out of the sun? Honestly
133 hotdog // Jul 31, 2012 at 3:38 PM
Ibiza – You beata me too it get off my convo
Croftus – Thats my point mate £5-£7 Million is not the mega bucks that Man City/ Barcelona/ Real Madrid will pay. We are after different players and if we are lucky we will compete witht these guys if we keep buying well at £10million. It will be tough but they cant buy everyone can they, plenty of players out there at the right price??
134 WWYCD // Jul 31, 2012 at 3:38 PM

136 hotdog // Jul 31, 2012 at 3:41 PM
WWYCD – He is 27 so yes at the edge of players we go for but we will get 4 years out of him and i dont think Ashley will be looking for a sell on hence he wants a low transfer figure!
137 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Jul 31, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Hotdog…I thought we shared everything though? From the mustard to the ketchup. Please tell me this is still the case? Not sure I could face this world otherwise.
Yo….Let’s use the figure of £7m (say). For me, a mid twenties international RB is good value at £7m, bordering on bargain (granted not in the same bracket as Tiote or Yo). Time will tell I suppose, but I do think the club are trying to get this one done or Pardew would never have said anything about signing Cabaye’s mate, would he? Hmmm….Sly silver fox.
138 WWYCD // Jul 31, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Ibiza
Maybe he would play out his days with us but I dont think MA look for deals which offer that until we are able to cover the costs and make a profit without player sales
I dunno just the more I think about it the less likely I think it will be plus the mumours of links to Pieters and van der Wiel coming out of Holland (where Carr spent a whole lot of time last season) makes more sense to me both young players not up to their full potential yet one on a low contract the other whom we would of signed if he hadnt gotten injured.
Just seems more realistic to me but I could very well be wrong
139 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 31, 2012 at 3:43 PM

7million (if correct) is good value for a French international.
And the same could be argued about cisse, what’s his resale value? Very similar age to debuchy.
Anything can happen in transfers, debuchy could have one good season then psg or city could offer 20 million. So hard to predict right now.

Am sure I read about Pards saying 25 was age limit for players but for a striker they would be pushed to 27 again could be wrong I cant fully remember
Ibiza
In MA eyes do u still think 7mill for a 27 year old who u might not be able to sell later for that a bargain? I just dont think he would
As for Pards saying that to the media whats the best way to set off a smokescreen at a club who give nothing away to the media? Dropping a accidental hint about a current players friend wouldnt be a bad way to do it
Time will tell though, it just seems far too public to me
148 Supreme // Jul 31, 2012 at 3:49 PM
Being an Australian, this is great for the club, the player and the national side. A lot of promising teens have left the A league or Australia at a young age and are looking to establish themselves. Mustafa Aminis at Dortmund, Rhys Williams at Boro and his two young brothers whom I played against at Fulham and Burnley respectively.
In regards with Newcastle, I really hope they push through for deals soon. It’s confusing the believe the Debuchy and Douglas saga has dragged on for months and months

Debuchy isn’t much older than cisse and we spent 8 million on him.
Ashley has never said players have to have sell on value just be value.
If he can help us make top 4 that would pay back the fee right there.

If Sagna had been fit Debuchy would of been sat on the bench I wouldnt say that he is established in the national team
As for the Cisse comment I would say strikers resale values are far bigger than defenders so the resale value is there just look at what we could sell Cisse for now whereas what would Santon fetch?

162 jesperfuglsang // Jul 31, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Then we just need Debuchy to sign then my predictions this season has been right more or less
163 rich_toonfan // Jul 31, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Cisse had a blinding season, santon had a very mixed season and is no where near his prime years like cisse, so his value could rise.
But if we paid 5 million for santon who as you say, would not have as high a resale value as a striker why not for debuchy?
And he may not be the starting rb but he has 9 caps so it’s not too bad, just unlucky he happens to be a very good right back when there is a slightly better one who currently plays at a higher level.
It doesn’t seem that we are keen to sell players for a lot of money unless somebody offers it, not like we tout their names around. Colo just got a bumper new deal and he is 30, showed no signs of trying to cash in on him.

167 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 31, 2012 at 4:05 PM
I don’t think fans should be worried that MA is not willing to spend money, because he has demonstrated that he will spend money if it represents a solid investment a la Cisse.
What he is not willing to do is to spend over the market value. I think we all really want Debuchy to come to the club, not only because he is a good player but because it will boost team spirit to have Cabaye’s best mate at the club.
However, if Lille continue with their approach to the transfer then I think we should live and let live, and move on. MA won’t let us be taken for a while. This transfer, if it does go through, would be an international statement that NUFC have the patience and resolve to wait for their man and not buckle under supposed pressure.
It may be frustrating but it has to be a good sign for the future or am I taking the wrong angle on this one?

Yeh I didn’t think we were signing anyone then out of nowhere cisse turned up so anything could happen.
A lot of our deals have gone public this year and the main culprits are Lille and Twente, two clubs we managed to get very good players off on the cheap.
I think it’s just down to their owners saying if you want our players you are going to have to pay their value plus a bit extra to make up for the saving on yohan and cheick
But knowing us we won’t and then we can just move on and let some other club match their silly valuation.
185 jimmymagpie // Jul 31, 2012 at 4:16 PM
Not sure that Pardew is going to Norwich to scout Anita – I think it more likely that he’s going to run the rule over Van Der Wiel, because if the Debuchy deal isn’t agreed within 24 hours, I think they’ll pull the plug.

Ibizatoon – just my own feeling on the situation, mate. It’s dragged on too long, and I don’t think that Ashley will sanction going anywhere near £8m for another right back whilst Simpson looks like staying at the club. Apparently, Van Der Wiel would be a cheaper option, and if, as the Chron claim that a medical has been pencilled for tomorrow, terms would have been agreed by now, and I’m sure that we would have heard something. However, I could be totally wrong, of course – the next day or two will tell us.

Reading through these comments, it’s funny how much the words ‘think’ and ‘wish’ turn up … we don’t have a clue!

Why would Pardew mention Debuchy if we are not after him then. If you say “we are looking to bring in Cabaye’s friend” and then dont surely Yohan would be pi*sed off

Jimmy…Fair enough. Just didn’t know if you had heard something through that good ole grapevine.

Ibizatoon – no mate, not since I posted on Sunday, when I said that there was no deal in place as at midnight on Saturday, Just got back from Portugal myself this morning after a few days holiday with my rich brother, who retired to the Algarve 12 years ago.

We sem to be gettin weaker, we sell Best and bring in only Good…wait until Jan when we’ll sell him and bring in Peter Average.
Seriously though, hope he fills the void Kadars rapid demise left in the youbg CB area.

Big Pappa…That was my thinking too. Unless Cabaye was in on the smokescreen plan all along. Unlikely imo

I don’t know much of van der wiel, any good?
What I do know is that the Dutch defence is horrific so hopefully he is the strong link in a weak chain.
Nice to hear jimmy, lucky for some ey. Your mates at the club not got the scoop on the medical pencilled in? Transfer sage said this morning a medical is pencilled in for early Friday afternoon. Any truth?

Hernandez would be brilliant, real poacher and has decent pace.
Can’t see man utd letting him go, especially of berbatov is off. He is better than welbeck so they would be mad to sell him

van der weil is pretty decent.
from what ive seen hes pretty much like debuchy, not the best defender but crscking going forward. Can see exciting games next season witn Santon and Debuchy negatting their defensive duties to attack attack attack.
Could be Pards plan, get anita in to sit with tiote and let.the.fullbacks lose.

5-2-12 like Juve or a 4-2-3-1?
216 geordiejamie89 // Jul 31, 2012 at 7:31 PM
Right lets sell Williamson now, and buy Erik Pieters, and Debuchy. And perhaps douglas. Then Andy Carroll, job done.

Apparently accoring to the heart forum he’s a bit of a hard man especially for a 19 yo.

400K is a great price for upside. He could provide some good depth this year–with all the Europa League matches, and the African Cup of Nations looming (Tiote replacement for the month he’s away, perhaps?), we’ll need all hands on deck.

Well with Senegal and Ivory Coast in a playoff against each other we shouldn’t be too affected by ACON. Don’t think Good is anywhere near Epl level (yet) from the talk here in oz. in time hopefully….
