Newcastle Offered Ajax’ Dutch International Right Back

The Evening Chronicle is reporting today that confirms other reports of the last few days, that Newcastle have been offered 24 year-old Ajax right back Gregory van der Wiel, who has played 35 times for the Dutch National team.

Gregory van der Wiel – Ajax’s Dutch International right back

It could even be a good deal for Newcastle, because van der  Weil’s contract runs out next summer, and he could come at a knock-down price this summer.

The player joined Ajax’s famous Youth Academy when he was seven years old, and he made his debut for the Dutch powerhouse when he had just turned 19,  in March of 2007, in a 4–1 away win against FC Twente, when he came on as a substitute for Jaap Stam, the former Manchester United defender

van der Weil has played a total of 184 times for Ajax with 12 goals, and he made his debut for the full Netherlands National team in February 2009, when he came on as a substitute for John Heitinga, now at Everton, in the friendly game against Tunisia.

The 6′ tall defender has played for all the Dutch youth sides, and while his agents have contacted Newcastle about the possibility of taking the player this summer, the next step is whether Newcastle can sign Lille’s Debuchy, their number one target, which hopefully could even be this week.

If that happens it’s unlikely that Newcastle will be interested in Gregory van der Wiel.

Comments welcome.

Chronicle reporting Van Der Wiel and dutch journo said he would be available for 4-5mill, Douglas for 5-6mill and Pieters nearly joined us for around 5mill last few windows and now he has a year less on his contract so wouldnt be more expensive

Its probably all bull but still fun to dream haha

I for one don’t buy into this nonsense about “If Debuchy doesn’t come, Cabaye will want to leave”.

They are not joined by the hip, they are not married. They are merely friends. If debuchy had that kind of influence on Cabaye, then he wouldn’t have left Lille in the first place. The key to keeping Cabaye is to show ambition. To show that the club is progressing and that he is not wasting his time at a club that is going nowhere.

why does everyone want debuchy i know he is good but nufc mustn’t think he is that good because we would have him over the line

Couldnt agree more fella if Debuchy meant that much to him as u say he wouldnt of let Lille

Yes it might be nice to have him around again but realistically if we got him tomorrow and Barca/Madrid come in for him next month would he turn them down simply because we bought his friend? I highly doubt it

I haven’t a clue about all these Dutch and French players.

If there’s not a lot between them Debuchy seems a good move as he’s Cabaye’s friend, and it makes Cabaye staying for the next few years more likely.

Looked very poor defensively in the Euros. Was expecting more from him attacking-wise too, however I guess that could be said of the whole Dutch squad.

I think it’s fair to say that we will get a fullback and in all probability a right back but who remains unclear.

The NUFC scouting team have probably got two or three possibilities lined up with ‘irons in all fires’ and will probably move in and tie up the deal when the circumstances and conditions are right. I don’t think they panic buy, anymore.

Prefer Debuchy (who is class) to this feller, who is merely a decent full back, although still better than Simpson, although Simpson HAS done it and been decent at Premier level, whereas we don’t know if this lad can cut it.
    Debuchy WILL

I’d rather we stuck with our number one target, however this is a very good alternative option if we fail with Debuchy.

Really rate this guy. Love to have him at us but don’t see it happening. Debuchy for 6 and this guy at a knock down would be great deals. Debuchy can play right midfield or centre midfield as well as right back and don’t know about wiels versatility but even if e only plays right back gives us good options in right back position as well as formation choices too

Well, he’s decent. I don’t know that the performance of the Dutch defense as a whole at the recent Euros is a good sign, but maybe that means we can get him at a discount. He is probably an upgrade over Danny Simpson. [Speaking of Dutch defenders, whatever happened to Erik Pieters? Are we still pursuing him?]

But the fact of the matter is that we MUST bring Debuchy through to Newcastle. 8 million is a bargain. He’s Jose Enrique, but faster.
