The Evening Chronicle is reporting today that confirms other reports of the last few days, that Newcastle have been offered 24 year-old Ajax right back Gregory van der Wiel, who has played 35 times for the Dutch National team.
Gregory van der Wiel – Ajax’s Dutch International right back
It could even be a good deal for Newcastle, because van der Weil’s contract runs out next summer, and he could come at a knock-down price this summer.
The player joined Ajax’s famous Youth Academy when he was seven years old, and he made his debut for the Dutch powerhouse when he had just turned 19, in March of 2007, in a 4–1 away win against FC Twente, when he came on as a substitute for Jaap Stam, the former Manchester United defender
van der Weil has played a total of 184 times for Ajax with 12 goals, and he made his debut for the full Netherlands National team in February 2009, when he came on as a substitute for John Heitinga, now at Everton, in the friendly game against Tunisia.
The 6′ tall defender has played for all the Dutch youth sides, and while his agents have contacted Newcastle about the possibility of taking the player this summer, the next step is whether Newcastle can sign Lille’s Debuchy, their number one target, which hopefully could even be this week.
If that happens it’s unlikely that Newcastle will be interested in Gregory van der Wiel.
