There are reports in Setanta Sports and other news outlets this morning, that Newcastle have now offered FC Twente £4M for their center-back Douglas, and if the news is to be believed, that’s around €1M more than they offered a couple of weeks ago.
Douglas – Newcastle have bid £4M for defender – according to reports
The new offer is said to be £4M, which translates to around €5M and the last bid was for €4M (£3.1M), so that’s about a 25% increase on the bid they made about two weeks ago – always assuming this news is accurate.
Alan Pardew has said he is hoping for one senior transfer to be completed before next Sunday and maybe two, so perhaps Douglas is one of those, although he will not be able to move to Newcastle until about four weeks time, because of residency requirements, so he can qualify for a Dutch passport and play for the Netherlands.
Douglas has one year left on his current deal, and he confounded both Newcastle and his club FC Twente recently, when he said he may want to stay in Holland, and see out his contract. That’s after he had been quoted several times as as saying now was the right time for him to leave Twente.
We’re not sure about this lad’s character, as he also said several weeks ago there was a bigger club than Newcastle interested in him, and that club was thought to be Italian Champions Juventus.
Alan Pardew has to be very careful that he only brings in good characters to Tyneside, and it only takes one bad apple to spoil the barrel, so we’re just not sure about Douglas.
This report could be true, but if it is and this offer is turned down, Newcastle will hardly be willing to raise their fee too much more for this 24 year-old Brazilian, who looks a good player.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens – maybe Newcastle can have some successes in the transfer market this week – that would be good.
