Photos from Portugal – Coloccini Receiving Guadiana Trophy

Here are some more photos taken on Saturday evening in Portugal,  by one of our readers, Rolf de Bruin,  after Newcastle had beaten Braga 2-1 and won the Trofeu Internacional Futebol do Guadiana – more simply known as the Guadiana Trophy.

Newcastle captain Coloccini lifts the Guadiana Trophy on Saturday night

Newcastle have now won three minor trophies in the last three years – the Coca Cola Championship in 2010, the Teresa Herrera trophy, when we beat Deportivo in Spain in 2010, and on Saturday evening, when we won the Guadiana Trophy.

We hope these are shades of better things to come for Newcastle – in the near future.

Coloccini being  presented with the Guadiana Trophy.

The lads mingling after the game – did we actually  win something?

 Jonas Gutierrez finally got that shirt off  – show off!

Braga being congratulated –  for losing to  Newcastle

Thanks again to Rolf for those photos.

=======================

We are reminded of the words of Ebeneezer Scrooge in a Christmas Carol (not Andy Carroll), by the great Charles Dickens, when Scrooge asks the third ghost:

“You are about to show me shadows of the things that have not happened, but will happen in the time before us?”  “Is that so, Spirit.”

We just hope seeing Fabricio Coloccini lifting that trophy on Saturday night,  are shadows of things that will happen in the time before us for the great Newcastle United Football Club – how about the FA Cup or League Cup next year?

We hope so – we really hope so.

    Am I still unable to buy tickets for an away match unless I’m a season ticket holder? Would love to get to the Reading game on 29th September, and also trying to enlighten my girlfriend by taking her along too!

    Anyone know the options I have to buy tickets, other than having to sit in the Reading end?

    Hi having posted for years. good to see that all is going well at the club. exciting times. just to say matias fernandez has just gone to fiorentina for 1m he’s an unreal player at that price and the lisbon fans are gutted. the fee was soo cheap as he was finishing his contract. I wish we looked more at spain portugal as there are some real bargains.

    Repost..

    I hope we keep hold of our entire squad including Simpson! What we achieved with this group last season was no fluke it was an outstanding achievement. If we could bring in 3 players of any of the crop that have been mention in previous weeks (not Carroll) then we will have a brilliant squad. a CB is a must!!

    Rich – I travel to holland quite a lot with work etc and can assure you, Douglas is getting a hard time from some bloggers.

    He is a very very good centre half, not as slow as everybody makes out and has been BY FAR the best centre half in holland for the past 2 seasons. Him and colo would be ridiculous!! And let’s say our £4m gets accepted…that is a total steal!!!

    that’s good to hear, just never knew much of him.

    is his temperament that bad? or just a couple isolated incidents

    geordie157 – that isn’t great if I want to take my girlfriend if it’s 1 ticket per membership. So she would have to be a member too and we’d have to try and get seats next to each other…?

    just checked on the official site, logged into to my account and it says only season ticket holders qualify for the away game.

    guess you will just have to get some in the reading end.

    @Torq,

    I think the major reason why so many people think Douglas is some ticking time bomb, is due to that video where he gets sent off.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AwuazHJZC4

    His reaction was only due to being sent off wrongly. He didn’t touch the guy until after he was sent off.

    @ torq i think the concern stems more from his attitude than his playing abilities. It was that whole interview about “a bigger team than newcastle are after me”. After that opinion on him really went down on here.

    you need to be a season ticket holder who has got over 40 points too…so looking unlikely you will get into the away end.

    rich_toonfan – cheers, that’s what I thought. Does anyone know any other ways to get tickets though? Or if season ticket holders don’t fill the allocation, do they just hand them back to the home club? Not very helpful to those of us who don’t live in Newcastle any more…

    No his temperament is NOT as bad as is being publicised. A couple of isolated incidences that get trawled up whenever he is mentioned. Don’t get me wrong, he is a big unit and put himself about, but that’s what you look for in a centre half! In comparison to say, HBA in france, Douglas probably has a lesser of a ‘bad boy’ rep than HBA did when he signed. Pards and carver sorted Hatem and I’m sure if there is work to do with Douglas then they are more than capable to handle it.

    The fans who took part in the Darlo pitch invasion, seem to have cost a lot of us the chance to get tickets.

    I ordered a membership just before they put on the site “currently under review” so if i can’t get tickets for away games i’ll be getting a refund and watching Di Canio’s red army instead.

    Rainrix – Yeah I also read that article and at first was like ‘fu€k off to a bigger club then!!!’

    However the word around Holland and the club in general is that he was given some bad advice (probably from one of his several agents!) and felt the need to over-promote himself. Since then he has been very quiet. Maybe he ha realised that we / others have been scouting him for a number of years so he doesn’t need to do or say anything.

    geordie157 – yeah, not sure what those pitch invaders have to do with someone who lives in Surrey now and wants to take his girlfriend to see some football locally. Will have to wait until we can both go up to Newcastle, but then that’s not exactly easy to get a ticket either!

    is that why you can’t buy a club membership anymore?

    I planned on getting one a couple months back but decided to wait until start of season and couldn’t find it when I just looked.

    @rainrix

    if you were playing for a dutch side and you thought newcastle and a bigger club (maybe bayner munich for example) were after you, it would be a simple choice if you had no real affiliation to either club.

    @ Torq honestly i’d still take him regardless. Ive heard quite a few people say he’s one of the best defenders in the dutch league. We were crying out for a powerful domineering CB last season (tayls did this till he got injured). If taylor didn’t get injured I’m sure we could have gotten 4th .

    @ rich still it was us who were showing the biggest interest in him. Also when most other players are linked with multiple clubs they usually compliment most of them. Not particularly bold admittedly but still it comes off as egotistical what he did.

    yeh it wasn’t the most political answer he gave.

    but then again he is a footballer and not a politician, he probably answered the question when interviewed and his agent would have cringed.

    He seems like he has been given some better advice since then and is trying to keep all clubs interested in him, including twente happy with his recent answers.

    and this year the home game with the mackems falls right next to my birthday so wanted to make sure I got tickets for it.

    I went with my mate ( fulham fan ) to fulham vs twente in the Europa league last season. Douglas completely dominated dempsey and Zamora and marshalled the defence like a boss. Trust me, despite his disiplinary record 4m is a steal. McClaren reckons he’s the best cb in the league and nobody disagreed with him…
