Davide Santon continues to be linked with a move back to Italy and the latest news is that Rome club Lazio are now leading the chase for the 21 year-old, who had a difficult first season in England, but surely Newcastle are not yet willing to give up on the youngster, who cost £5M from Inter-Milan a year ago.
Davide Santon – in action against Olympiacos last Friday night
Davide took a while to settle down at Newcastle, and also had some injuries, but he put in some good performances for Newcastle at left back, and he now will be hoping to add some consistency to his game in the upcoming season, and he’ll get lots of chances to do just that.
Davide appears happy on Tyneside, and he has found a new Geordie girlfriend too, so that should help him settle down at Newcastle.
This is what Davide had said about things at Newcastle, after Roma were said to have approached Newcastle about the player, but were quickly turned down by the Magpies:
“I’m really good. I have recovered from a knee injury and now I’m facing the pre-season with Newcastle at my best.” “I am fine here, now I know what the coach wants and I’m ready to play a great season.”
“I think we can fight for a place in the next Champions League, it’s hard but we can do it.” “AS Roma wanted me but Newcastle replied that I was not for sale and I am glad of this.”
It seems a bit strange that both clubs linked with Davide are located in Rome, but there’s just no way Newcastle will want to sell the 7 times capped Italian International, but he’ll have to show through in the coming season, as that stance may alter next summer, if he hasn’t come good on Tyneside by then.
But hey, this lad’s a good player, very good technically, and he simply needs to play more games in the Premier League, and he will continue to improve, as he did last season.
