Davide Santon Linked With Move Back To Italy

Davide Santon continues to be linked with a move back to Italy and the latest news is that Rome club Lazio are now leading the chase for the 21 year-old, who had a difficult first season in England, but surely Newcastle are not yet willing to give up on the youngster, who cost £5M from Inter-Milan a year ago.

Davide Santon – in action against Olympiacos last Friday night

Davide took a while to settle down at Newcastle, and also had some injuries, but he put in some good performances for Newcastle at left back, and he now will be hoping to add some consistency to his game in the upcoming season, and he’ll get lots of chances to do just that.

Davide appears happy on Tyneside, and he has found a new Geordie girlfriend too, so that should help him settle down at Newcastle.

This is what Davide had said about things at Newcastle, after Roma were said to have approached Newcastle about the player, but were quickly turned down by the Magpies:

“I’m really good. I have recovered from a knee injury and now I’m facing the pre-season with Newcastle at my best.”  “I am fine here, now I know what the coach wants and I’m ready to play a great season.”

“I think we can fight for a place in the next Champions League, it’s hard but we can do it.”  “AS Roma wanted me but Newcastle replied that I was not for sale and I am glad of this.”

It seems a bit strange that both clubs linked with Davide are located in Rome, but there’s just no way Newcastle will want to sell the 7 times capped Italian International, but he’ll have to show through in the coming season, as that stance may alter next summer, if he hasn’t come good on Tyneside by then.

But hey, this lad’s a good player, very good technically,  and he simply needs to play more games in the Premier League, and he will continue to improve, as he did last season.

What do you think?

    He’s going nowhere.

The blokes just got engaged to a Geordie lass. If he even considered it she would knock him out.

Santon will be a huge star in a few years, trust me and we cant lose him coz we got no cover out left. Raylor is not a full time option. Anyone remember the Chelsea game?

Why would we be interested in selling a young player who has proved he has the potential to become a great player?

More utter rubbish from the press me thinks; just cant see the Board letting him go – unless its an “Andy” type bid, 2 or 3 times what we think he is worth.

Can’t understand this. The best is yet to come from Santon.
But that Dutch lad offered to Newcastle….suspicious.

when NUFC players starting to get international call up, it means we are doing great.
it also means more good non-international players will be looking to join our team so they can get noticed by their countries.
Santon’s return to Italian national team won’t be long, he already get noticed from italian clubs and the national team need young players.

Why would we want to sell Santon? We can’t even get one new full back in “over the line” never mind having to get a second one in to replace Davide if he were to go.
    Think this is a ‘non-story’.

Lyon are desperate to get rid of cissokho as they have already replaced him thinking he would leave this summer. Surely we could put a cheeky 3-4 mill bid in. They can only say no

Balloteli if we can afford him, that will be awesome.
Balloteli needs a team who can look after him like Italian national team. I remember the game Italy vs Ireland when Bonucci put his hand at Balloteli’s mouth.

@redondo77 – we have another Italian player! Coloccini has dual nationality and is fluent in Italian! Also, just because someones from the same country doesn’t mean it would help him settle! Loadsa players with same nationality don’t get on!
Also, pretty sure santon is engaged to a southern lass who lives/studies in toon….

Ok I’m confused…sky sports say we’ve improved our bid….however there’s an apparent quote from Lille’s Sporting Director saying there is no offer on the table and it appeared around 35 minutes ago

Pardew No. 1 and Gateshead Mag- Yes we lost out on a cracking player there for playing ‘hard ball’ on transfers … again.
I suppose, however, it shows we (Carr) can spot ’em all right even if we don’t sign ’em.
Never mind, we ‘ll probably go back in for Taylor with a huge offer in future when we could have had him for a few quid and a Sports Direct top.

Great news on Debuchy, please accept it Lille and then hopefully have that wrapped up by the weekend.

We must sign a CB (Douglas, Sakho or whoever), Debuchy & a FW. We need cover/challenger for Saylor as he could be crippled in an instance but i’m sure we can count on a backline of Debuchy, Collocini, Saylor & Santon vs Spurs.

Forward wise, i’d love us to get Remy but in a practical sense i think we’d be better off signing Zaha as the lad is quality (inconsistant & a bit wasteful at times however he is only 19 so will learn to remove that from his game). Zaha would be perfect to play as our LF/RF role as i see Sammy as a CF. If Zaha though is being touted at £10M and Remy is £13M then i’d probably say go for Remy however if we can get Wilfried Zaha for £5-8M then i’d get him for sure, so much potential.
