There is news in the Daily Mirror that Newcastle has made an enquiry about Malaga defensive midfielder, Jeremy Toulalan, who has played 36 times for France.
And defensive midfielder is not really one of the weaknesses of the Newcastle squad, although both central midfielders Alan Smith and Danny Guthrie have left Newcastle on free transfers this summer.
But the form of both 19 year Mehdi Abeid and new boy 18 year-old Gael Bigirimana from Coventry has been very good in pre-season for Newcastle, and they could back up Cheick Tiote, Newcastle’s number one choice defensive midfielder.
And Newcastle have also been linked this summer with Ajax’s Vurnon Anita,. who played defensive midfield last season for the Dutch Champions, so there are some questions about how accurate this report is.
Toulalan joined Malaga last summer from Lyon, and his former French club are said to be interested in signing the 28-year-old, and his Spanish club Malaga are also in financial troubles, and must sell to help them balance their books, and maybe Newcastle are interested, in case they can get a good deal on the player?
Malaga did very well on the field last season and finished fourth in La Liga, and even qualified for the Champions League, but they have spent money they didn’t have (that’s unusual), and the club are in some financial peril at the moment.
But the transfer fee Malaga paid to Lyon last summer for the midfielder was £10m (no wonder they are in financial distress) and there’s just no way Newcastle would pay anywhere near that figure for Toulalan, especially when we have some great youngsters coming through the ranks.
For the record, Toulalan played 201 games while at Lyon with one goal, and played 25 times with 3 goals for Malaga last season.
We cannot believe there’s much truth to this story at all.
