It seems that the clubs who have some of Newcastle’s transfer targets this summer are adamant in trying to keep their players at the club, and news today that Ajax have offered Vurnon Anita a new contract, and it looks a good one too. The other news on Anita is that Newcastle have put in a second bid of €9.5M for the Dutchman.
Vurnon Anita – Newcastle bid €9.5M for Ajax player?
The news is in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf and it seems it’s a move to hold off the club that has been after him all summer – Newcastle.
Ajax Director of Football Marc Overmars tells the newspaper:
“We do not want to lose Vurnon. That’s why we have made him an offer to sign with us until 2015 or 2016.” “The coaching staff has been very clear.”
“Vurnon is very important for the team and we do not want to let him go. With his new contract he would be one of the highest earners at Ajax and his services will be appreciated.”
Of course even with this new lucrative contract, it’s likely that Newcastle will still be able to offer the Dutchman better terms, but this is a case in point, where a player Newcastle are after comes out of it in better shape, even if they don’t join Newcastle.
The newspaper is also reporting that Newcastle are readying an improved offer for the player, but it’s hard to believe, because they say it’s €9.5M, and our first offer was supposed to be for just €5M.
There’s just no way Newcastle would be offering around £7.6M for the Dutch International.
Newcastle have been watching Anita in pre-season and he’s looked impressive, but there’s even a possibility that the player will accept the new offer from Ajax, which is what his father is telling the newspaper:
“Vurnon is keeping all his options open. He wants to see what other countries can offer, but Ajax have offered this contract to show how much they want him.”
But money isn’t everything, well not with a certain percentage of players that is, and Anita has already said he would love to play in the Premier League, and has talked in lyrical terms about a certain Newcastle United Football club.
On July 1st, this is what Anita had to say about a potential move in Ajax Life:
“Newcastle are a beautiful club. I’m open to anything. We’ll see what happens, but there’s nothing wrong with listening to Ajax and what interested clubs have to say.”
“I will seriously consider anything that comes up. Does it matter to me that Newcastle are not in the Champions League? – No.” ”However, I’m an Ajax player for now. I’m focusing on Ajax.”
“Newcastle’s interest has made me think about a potential transfer, though. It’s a sign that I’m on the right track and have to keep this up. I haven’t set a deadline for when I want clarity. I’ll just see how this pans out.”
This is what his agent Harry Lulofs said on July 20th, which is probably where the €9M fee comes from:
“It’s not correct that Vurnon asked Ajax for a transfer” “It’s correct that Newcastle made an offer for him, but I don’t know how high this was.” “They never tell me. Ajax did tell me that he can only leave when Newcastle pays an exceptional fee. They didn’t say how high that fee should be.”
“I think €9m is a decent fee,””If my information’s right, that’s what Tottenham paid for Vertonghen. Vurnon is a midfielder, so I think a fee around the €9M seems fair.” “Newcastle is a nice club,” ”They play for the top five places in the Premier League and they want to join the Champions League.”
“Besides, that it’s a nice city. Vurnon is ready for a new step. He lives for his sport and is a real warrior. He’s also very good in one-touch football.”
This is another transfer that has dragged on, since Newcastle are said to have put in an initial bid of €5M for the player some weeks ago, and we’d be surprised if Newcastle have bid €9.5M for Anita, even if they have put in a second bid.
What do you think?

Comment #3pb…If you have that attitude, then what is the point in signing anyone?
Thinking about it, what is the point in signing anyone if we cannot have Paul?
What is the point in living without the great man playing in black and white?
Oh God, here we go again.

Comment #12Random Question – Brazil play Honduras at st james tonight, i read on bbc tyne and wear there are 1000 tickets made available at the gate for tonight. Im desperate to view something olympic related (taking the nephew). However im like a 4 hour drive and the tickets are not on the olympic website. As i understand it St James no longer has a ticket office number to call? Anyone correct me there? Wondering whether to just risk it and drive.

Comment #13There’s a raccoon on Sky News predicting olympic results. Apparently it correctly predicted Spains’ footy success recently. Perhaps we are actually pursuing the bl**dy raccoon.

Comment #14Right that’s it had enough now of all the transfer rumours. This is what will happen, we won’t sign anyone as we won’t pay the money but we finished 5th last season and the full squad are having a good pre season to gel a bit more with some of the young players looking almost ready for the first team so that’s an improvement so we will finish 2nd in the league qualify for the champions league and then with the money we saved this transfer window added to the money for 2nd and qualifying for the champions league ashley will shock the world bringing in Ronaldo,Messi and xavi for a go at winning the champions league. Remember you heard it here first

Dunno about u guys but I feel once Debuchy or Van der Wiel signs for us, the only area we really need to address is the all important CB position. Saylor is fine when fit but I’m hoping we get Douglas or Mbiwa. With Curtis waiting in the wing, defensively we are sorted. I dont mind if we sign that Rhys Williams fella, that Aussie defender over at Boro to help out Curtis settle in.
If our 2 Senegalese strikers shown us it benefits the club, can’t see why 2 Aussie defenders won’t emulate the same understanding.
Every other area in our 1st team are international level players with the exception of Saylor & Willo. Having said that, Anita & a top young ST such as Guidetti or Senegal’s Olimpic player, Moussa Konate will def take this already strong team to the next level.
Hope tonite’s match in Holland leads us to some Dutch signings over the weekend. Lets keep it positive here guys. C’mon Ashley! Stop sitting on yer fat wallet:)

Comment #17toon1707 – damn right, sir! I think the reason we don’t bust our nuts buying at any price is because the coaching staff have already set in mind that we have a good enough core now to continue a good run next season. If we appreciate that games makes players, the only way for the younguns to break through is to get them on the grass asap. IF we get one of our targets then OK, but if not, we have the squad to at least do what we did last year, I have the faith.
I just can’t wait to talk some sense about footy again, but mostly I cant wait to talk sense… 🙂

Comment #21Please- ” Just do it”. Anita would be a snip and really
provide much needed ball retention and an added conveyor belt
to our creative players. Playing alongside Tiote and behind but linking with Ben Arfa, Cabaye and Marveaux etc. He is quick but is neat and tidy . Just sign him he perfectly fits the value for money line mentioned a month ago by Carr and would be a big piece of the
jig saw Pardew is looking for if we are to move onwards and upwards.

Comment #22I watched the Norwich v Ajax friendly last Tuesday online, Anita was a passenger in an otherwise well drilled but uninspiring performance by Ajax (70% possession and nary a threatening shot on goal). He did a couple of neat things but – curiously – looked uncomfortable on the ball at times and was probably the worst Ajax player on the field (always remembering Ajax are a damned fine side technically).
For £3.5m, maybe worth a punt. For £7m, stick with Simpson and hold onto the cash for someone a lot better. Anita could get crushed in the Prem I fear…

Comment #23Lee Dodd- Have you not heard of the Ashley/Pardew/Carr transfer
mantra. Anita is 23 and has not yet peaked either as a talent or from a potential re- sale aspect.

Comment #26On a serious note I do think a couple of playeers will be brought in however like Tsunki if not I think our squad is good enough to replicate last season Marvaux looks quality hopefully get a full season out of him, Taylor the same and Ben arfa only came in to the team in about January so that’s 3 players to add to last seasons success not signins I know but will help us push on a bit I think come on not long now just get behind the club and we will see what happens
