We wondered why Sammy Ameobi was not in the squad for the game at Den Haag on Saturday, but news yesterday from manager Alan Pardew that the 20 year old is suffering from a hamstring injury, and will probably not even be ready for the first game of the season a week on Saturday against Tottenham.
Sammy Ameobi – has hamstring pull
That’s really disappointing news for Sammy, who now stands close to 6’5″ tall officially, and was looking very good in pre-season, and with Ben Arfa probably not going to make it, Sammy had a decent chance of starting the game against Spurs on the right wing.
Alan Pardew had this to say to the local press about the 20 year-old:
“I don’t think Sammy will play tonight at Hartlepool.” “I can’t see him being right for the first game of the season in terms of being available.” “He needs to push at this time. He’s missed a very important week.”
Of course we cannot complain too much this summer about injuries, because Sammy now joins another 20 year-old Shane Ferguson, as the only Newcastle players on the sidelines with injury, and interestingly enough Shane has been suffering from the same ailment – a hamstring injury.
Shane has missed all of pre-season, just like he missed most of it last season after being injured early in the game at Darlington in July of last year, along with Danny Guthrie.
The manager had this to say about the 20 year-old Northern Ireleand International:
“Fergie has missed the whole pre-season.” “It’s not ideal, and both Ferguson and Ameobi need to be pushing and they’re not.”
Newcastle will send a side to play Hartlepool tonight and Pardew may give games to French Internationals Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye, who haven’t yet played for Newcastle in pre-seaosn.
Sylvain Marveaux also didn’t feature at Den Haag on Saturday night and should see some playing time, and it looks like Shola Ameobi and Mike Williamson will be given starts at Victoria Park tonight.
