It does look good. My fav so far is the ‘entertainers’ strip with the brown ale badge. My least fav the promotional season from the early 90s with the thin stripes on one side and thick stripes on the other. Ghastly.

Really like this kit. At first I was a bit on the fence because I loved last seasons kit. But this one looks really smart i think with the collar. And the Virgin logo looks better now. Maybe my friends will stop asking me why my shirt has a logo duct taped to it.

Rumours Arsenal want Greg VDW for £7m. That sounds closer to his value (but still too much). I reckon he’s worth about £6m given his achievements etc. So this rumoured £10m for both is a joke. Especially if Anita is rated at somewhere around £7-8m. £2-3m for VDW is a joke.

Last year of contract doesnt and shouldnt affect fees too much in my mind. Sure it gives some degree of power to buyer and player but if they are a key member of a team then it shouldnt. A year is a long time in the football world.

Debuchy will not come. Lille dont need the money (after sale of Hazzard) and they are chasing another trophy. They wont want to let another key player go. They missed Cabaye and Gervinho last season.

Also we cant keep comparing fees to what we paid for Cabaye. Sure Allen is not worth £20m by a fair bit. But to argue that on the basis that we paid peanuts for Cabs (BECAUSE OF A CLAUSE) is silly. We were quoted £12m for Cabaye two season back before we found out about the clause.

Allen is probably worth £10m due to his age and potential. But its inevitable that he is going to be valued over the top because 1) he is a key player for Swans and 2 there is big interest in him.

I reckon we may snap up Pieters (if he gets fit) right at the end of the window and then play Santon/Simmo at RB. Then go in for Debuchy in january. Remember Pieters can play CB as well and RB at a push.

KEY POINT

Dont be surprised if we only see 1 player through this window. My bets are that the Board will wait til January and reassess where Newcastle are. If we are having another good season and are holding out in Europe (and looking like qualifying again) I reckon that is when Ashley will open his wallet a bit. At that point we will know if Ba/Cisse are off to ACON. It will be reaching the point of Europa where we will need to field a stronger squad too.

£20m has been quoted as the budget but I reckon we will only spend £10m tops this window (including Bigi and Good) and then save £10m for January (Llambias once said about AC money last summer that they intended to ensure there were funds left available for January). But like Pards said, MA will bring the cash forward for the right players (Cisse).

I think we can last til January without any major signings. If Simmo is still here then he will likely leave Jan (Although for what we paid I’d just let him leave for free/see if he signs over the next year) because it would be better to have him in the squad.

We just have to hope we have no major injuries by January. MA plays a risky game but that’s how he’s been successful. I have confidence in our youngsters tbh to bide us till then. It will depend on Pards mgmt skills. For example, do we play a less experienced squad against “lesser” teams in the Prem so we can play the stronger ones in Europa ensuring we go some way in it. Or does he focus entirely on the league and rely on youngsters to cope in the big bag European stage?

Players like Cabaye I think can be rested against say Wigan and it wont be long until Gosling or Amalfitano or Abied can fill in. Remember how surprised we were with how well Guthrie stepped up for both Tiote and Cabaye. Surely Gosling and the like are at the same stage Guthrie was our first season back. but look what Pardew did with him. Pards is clearly assessing alternative options upfront (Vuckic, Obertan even Marveaux as second strikers). My only worry is defensive cover. Colo is simply one in a million at the back and you can tell when he isnt playing. We manage with Willo partnering. But without him it all falls apart a bit. This is why we need to keep Simmo IMO.

Win/Lose or Fail one things for sure is that our youth players will be better for it next season.

Not agreeing nor disagreeing with this idea. Just stating what I think will play out.

Defenders are the concern because they are often the players that get tested the most physically (therefore have to be rested a bit more). It also not an area you can easily put youth into. Defenders require more experience relative. Thats why some of the best ones in our league are also older.

You can play a kid upfront and you may struggle to score. But play a kid at the back and you could risk a hammering.

I agree with most of your points but do not underestimate the power of paying the full amount up front.

A 7-8 million valuation could suddenly become 4-5 million if the payment is instant.

Banks aren’t loaning out money as free and easy as they used to. The diffenence between missing payments owed to the banks and getting a hefty charge and paying on time and having some left over to pay wages, bills etc… Is massive this day and age!

As my gooner friend pointed out. He is so overrated anyway. Averages 12 goals per season. May have scored 30 this season but has never scored more than 20 in any other season.

@51 Beattie25. Your point about cash up front is valid. Despite our UK base interest rates being only 0.5%, it’s actually not cheap(or easy) to borrow money for any organisation. However, you need to make a distinction between clubs that are cash rich/comfortable (Lille at a guess, because of sale of Hazzard) v clubs that really need cash short term. A club’s that cash rich is not going to discount a players value by 25%, just for an upfront payment.
@46 LGFUAD21. I can’t disagree with your synopsis of how things are likely to happen for this window, and into January. The reality is, Ashley won’t spend unless he’s getting value for money, and an asset that he believes will immediately increase in value on signing. That’s the whole transfer policy in a nutshell.

Definitely. Most people have only seen Pieters in that friendly and a very poor youtube compilation where somebody seems to have deliberately made him look poor.

We were very interested before his injury. And I keep hearing whispers about an agreement in place that we intend to honour when he is fit (think a dutch journo mentioned that).

Also I think Vuckic should be used as an impact sub in games we are chasing this season. Nothing better than an unpredictable striker up top. That’s why Ranger was able to tear defences apart 2 seasons ago. only problem was he cant score. Vuckic could be good in the hole. he likes to get shots off from just outside the box and he’s pretty accurate too.

Lfguad guess so just thinking aloud really, there’s a lot of good players going this season but none that seem right for us, personally I don’t rate Anita or vdw particularly highly.

My preference this season would be introduce tav sammy vuckic abeid bigi etc into the team proper plus maybe two blue chip signings.

I fear with debuchy we would need to bring in another top cdm to balance the team, could prove quite costly

There’s nobody this season who stands out to me as get this player in now and maybe that’s how the club feel too hence the conservative approach

Hattam…I think that’s why many would like Debuchy and Anita as he would be that extra cover at CDM to bring balance to the whole thing. I don’t really know much about him though, have you seen a fair bit to form this opinion or just not impressed with the bits you have seen?

On Pieters, I think he would be a good edition to the squad. A good LB, can cover at CB with ease. Everyone was well up for him before the England game, surely that doesn’t change peoples opinion so much.

Intriguing….Hattem, I like your mind. So if/when (depending on your viewpoint) get’s injured, will you be happy with a Collo / Willo main pairing for the majority of the season?

I personally refuse to view him as many others do….championship or lower quality, but certainly can see how he is not a top 6 defender in fans eyes (I know he played the majority of the season and we got 5th).

IMy ideas would revolutionize the modern game.

Me and a friend started a manger career on Fifa t’other day with Cardiff. Sold the entire squad and replaced with loanees.

We played a 4-2-4 formation and had 17 strikers on our roster. The only one we actually owned was Sammy Ameobi.

We also played a striker in the CM position paired with a CDM (or another ST if we were feeling lucky).

Simulated MA must not have believed his luck when our loan offer came in for Shola with an option to buy for £999,999,990. We saved a shed load on money through not having to buy players.

We only went and won the Championship and FA cup. Unfortunately Chelsea pipped us in the League Cup.

Sadly though, our board couldnt find the funds to activate our option to buy Shola despite him being the top scorer in the Championship with Sammy a close second and none other than the mercurial Sylvain Ebankes Blake in 4th.

It ok though. We waiting to deadline day to loan Shola again with the same option to buy. Hopefully a rich Arab will buy the club so we can make the deal permanent this time.

I had an idea that would revolutionise football regarding the tactics to use agents Barcelona.

The formation should be 5-0-5. If you have 3 large defenders to play CB, each capable of playing a long ball and 2 sturdy full backs then invite Barca on the usual way. The moment an attack breaks down you have 5 strikers on the half way line. These strikers must be 3 large and 2 fast. Ping a ball up front and see what happens.

There is no point playing a midfield against them or Spain so just bypass that area and attack and defend with force!

His priority is value. Therefore youth who will increase in value makes sense – thats fine. And we may even go for players as good as Cisse, provided we see a deal …,.if Cisse had cost 500K or 1 mill more we would proabably have pulled out – detrimentally. Thus Cabaye and Tiote represent a deal / value – so we buy them. But when it comes to paying say 7mill for a full back who is worth 7 million, then we stall, and offer 3 mill to start with, and get laughed at. We need to cop on, and fast. Put it this way, if Anita was worth 10mill, but on sale for 7mill, we’d be in like a shot. But if he’s on sale for 7 million and he’s worth 7 million , its a problem to MA……I hope I’m wrong….

Brendan Rodgers is going to have a difficult year at liverpool. He’s signed Borini and Joe Allen after failing to sign Siggurdson. He’s trying to resurrect a swansea team that never looked like world beaters.

I would have thought he had better players in mind that he wasnt able to transfer to swansea. 15 million for Joe Allen is madness. Not that Joe Allen is bad (he never makes a risky pass), but his limitations are pretty obvious.

Liverpools squad is very average. It annoys me how they’re been built up to finish top 6 easily this season. I used to like Rodgers but since he went there he’s become a tw@t. If they play like Swansea did last season I can see a mid table finish. Its so easy to stop how they play, that’s how swansea started to slip down the table last season when they were looking good for a top half finish, much like we did the season before.

It’s always makes me laugh how people are so ready to spend other people’s money. Did you learn nothing from the Shepherd years?

Sometimes we have to wait a little bit. Ashley and Llambias are very astute and accomplished pitbull negotiators. You could argue Cabaye is worth 30M and we got him for 4.5M.
Why pay top dollar if you can negotiate world class deals like Cisse, cabaye, Tiote, Benny, Santon etc.

If Ashley and NUFC mutually do well out of it then good on him. Why always look for the negatives? We finished 5th, are in Europe, have brought in some great young exciting talents and are being run more professionally than ever without kowtowing to greedy agents and players. The players who come here now come becasue they are hungry to succeed, not for a big fee and pay day as was the case before.

Rotunda, please dont attempt to patronise me. If Cabaye is worth 30mill, I’m santa claus. I have stated publicly my respect for some of the good things that MA has done, but there is no doubt a good slice of luck involved, not least with his appointment of manager. I will go on record and commend him when i see him buy the new players, we need, to move the club on. You refer to the Shepherd years , but we all want to progress and we need to invest. We did well on some of the deals, but I have explained what I feel is MA’s approach in terms of value and this isnt always the correct approach. Sometimes its better to but the right player, and fair value – not a discount. Wonder if you read JimmyMagpie’s post re Pards being annoyed? You have to remember, we havent bought the centre back we need….we havent bought the right back we need……there seems to be no move to buy the back up striker we need…..remember, these are the same guys who panicked and tried to but Ruiz at the last second who openly admitted afterwards that he turned us down. Would we have bought Cisse if he cost a million more – even though he was always going to be a good buy. These are fair questions. I am not anti Ashley, but i laugh at the fawning attitudes to a guy who took your stadium name away and rbranded it after a bunch of shops. Trying to work out who will play most this season out of the fringe players out of Marveaux and Amalfitano?

On one hand Amal showed some great crossing ability but I am not sure what his strongest position will be?

On the other Marveaux joined us with a scoring rate when fit of 1 in 3. If we play 4 4 2 will he be on the right of that with Jonas on the left, 4 5 1 the same, 4 3 3 I see Ben arfa playing on the right of the front 3, with Ba getting his favoured central role upfront and cisse to his left but my strongest suspicion is we’ll go with 4 2 3 1, Tiote and Cabaye covering the defence then a 3 of Ben arfa, Cisse/Ba and Jonas. I just see him coming on as an impact player?! Do you?

I Simply don’t see Obertan playing much if he doesn’t leave for Swansea anyway.

I’ve made a right hash of this post, What I am trying to ascertain is which of Amalfitano and Marveaux do we think coudl break into the first team or do we think neither will start many games?

GM – I think you could be right on Arsenal, crafty move by Wenger i reckon as I suspect he actually wants to sell him and get his best value, last season will be his best ever, watch out for Giroud, fantastic player. Spurs have issues up front and in midfield, there to be taken in our first match, If Cabaye can get back in time i rate our chances highly but he is key to our midfield.

Lukaku will probably be going to spurs since AVB bought him for Chelsea ( never played hom though). Spurs only have 1 striker in defoe and Parker will miss the start of the season. As well as Modric dosent want to be there so their midfield isn’t looking great.

Without Parker last season they didn’t play well, I think we could we could smash them up if we’re up for it. But honestly I can see a draw. We won’t want to lose and won’t take many risks.

playing spurs up first is a great oppertunity for us. personally i do not rate avb too highly, he annoys in interviews by what he says with all his mentality mumbo jumbo and for god sake clear your throat. the players im sure don’t think highly of him, especially after his incompetence at chelsea. there squad almost feels weaker then last year after losing kranjar, pienar, abeboyor, king, saha…….and probably modric and parker injured.

Munster Mag – players are worth what the market will bear. It’s not a pure science. Ashley took a while to recognise that a football club should not be run wholly on business lines but I don’t have a problem with getting value for money but that is subjective. Because not everyone can fathom out his thinking does not negate him operating in the way he does. Working for an employer gives you an
option to quit, as a fan your options are limited. Personally, most of the criticism of him is unfounded. His expenditure in recent windows is cash flow driven. Historically a number of Premiership clubs buy late in the window for obvious reasons- good example is Stoke and Spurs. The season is a marathon not a sprint does it really matter if the season starts with the same group of players we have now . The market has been very quiet and will pick up . We’ll be there and Ashley will get maximum exposure with deadline signings. I still think we’ll do business in the next few days. It would not surprise me if there is a deadline day signing of AC. Oh and I think Cabaye would raise £ 20-25 million and when Ashley says no depending how much the buyer wants him he could well move for £ 30 million. Who would have thought Henderson would leave the mackems for so much . That’s the
market but not for the Toon.

Ashley is trying to maximise revenues. Is that a crime or just forward thinking. He was probably hoping Branson would take on the stadium naming rights as well. By all accounts, certainly Pardew’s opinion, Ashley has put 265 M of his own money in to the club. Shepherd used the fans money and bled us dry.

Ashley wants us to be self sufficient. We know that some clubs and agents are trying to shaft us and move the goal posts.
Why should we play along? Timing in these deals is everything.
You don’t have to like him but Ashley knows what he is doing and carr is probably advising him to the true price of a player.

We can get away with it against teams in the bottom half. We could see a few more 5-1 scoreline’s.

I have only stated this as it looks like we won’t be signing a centre back. I expected us to splash out on a top quality centre half. Too be honest, we should’ve signed a centre back and a striker by now as they were our main priorities in my opinion.

Signing Anita will just give us more options and will allow us to play more interesting formations.

Spurs and Arsenal have made 2/3 good signings already, so we need to catch them up and sign 3/4 good players before the end of the window.

I’d like to see Man Utd and Liverpool struggle this season. If Liverpool sell Agger and sign Allen, then that’d be a suicidal mistake. Hopefully Man Utd won’t sign Van Persie or anyone else decent.

Liverpool could’ve got Tiote (£3.5m), Ben Arfa (£7m) and Cabaye (£4.5m) for the price of Joe Allen.

We’re doing the right thing signing foreigners. The only English players that I’d like to see at the club are Walcott, Adam Johnson and Micah Richards.

That’s all we need. 4 quality players in this summer and we’ll be challenging Chelsea and Man City for the title. I’m desperate for us to get back to the big time and sign some quality. All the above players want to sign for us too.

All we’ll need to do in January is sign maybe just 2 squads players. It’d be great to have a complete team/squad. If Cabaye gets injured, we know that we have quality replacements in Abeid etc.

I hope Marveaux gets a lot a game time this year. The lads’ got nearly everything. Be good to have him and Anita in the team when we’re winning 1-0 with 5 minutes to go.

Im not the biggest fan of Simpson and Williamson, but I wouldn’t sell any unless a FB is brought in ( which atm is is looking hopeless) and 2 CB are brought in (very unlikely for this window). We need to keep willo, no matter how much people don’t rate him. The defence is thin enough already and selling another 2 defenders would be suicidal.

I know the club are working hard to get a couple deals done but it’s been an unusual window.

Very few clubs have managed to get players in, only really arsenal, chelsea, man utd and spurs have made significant signings.

It’s usually a lot busier now. Once a few clubs around our level and below start bidding it will hopefully get the ball rolling for more teams.

I think we may even not sign a FB this window and wait to get Debuchy in Jan or next summer, we have Simmo for another year and plenty of utility players and even Tav is coming through strong.

I think the transfers are suffering due to the way fees keep inflating.

Fees have risen so much the last few years and now clubs have said no, very few will pay these silly fees.

The only few clubs that pay them are psg, city, madrid, etc…all clubs who have money to burn.

Most leagues have had slow windows.

Selling clubs are holding out hoping they get a big club bidding and paying twice the value instead of selling for what they would consider a fair price.

I think we will have a slow window and possibly a busier, more sensible one in jan or next summer.

They have a decent stadium and a good set of fans. They’ve been relegated just the twice. They have a better footballing history than teams like Fulham, QPR, Reading, Stoke, Wigan etc.

If we sold Williamson, we’d ideally need 2 centre backs, but we can get away with just signing the one. That means we’ll have Perch, Saylor, Good and Street as cover.

We can afford to get rid of Simpson, even if we don’t sign Debuchy as we have Raylor, Perch, Santon and Tavernier who can play there. Right-back is our strongest position.

Does anybody think the club should take lessons from the bitish olympic cycling team.

They were discussing how they became so dominant and it was due to improving all areas by 1/2/3%

they studies everything from aerodynamic suits, helmets and training in a wind tunnel to get the perfect position to ride the bike.

Even down to small things like asking surgeons the best way to wash hands to cut down the risk of illness.

I’m sure we could benefit in some way from a similar programme.

Well the training facilities are being improved ,years after they shouldve done it. Hopefully this will reduce the amount of injuries in the team since we always seem to pick up a lot of injuries in training.

Football is hard to train for compared to a lot of other sports.

there are so many games that it is not possible to take 4 weeks off to work on strength and conditioning like it athletics, swimming,etc.

He was a truly great player. I used to watch him every other Saturday at the end of his career in the Welsh League back end of the 60s. He played with Mel Charles (John’s brother) also ex-international and bit of a donkey but Ivor was pure class.

Yes its smart. Sound policy. I believe the club are trying to get players in but at the same time I think they have become a bit short sighted. They had a fantastic window last year and managed to bring in some absolute steals. And I think that has made them over confident in their ability to grind bargains.

I would like to think that this crack about Anita and VDV are true but cant see it personally… maybe Anita but VDV would be a Coup although i would still prefer Debuchy. As for CB i would love Mbiwa but i didnt like his comments about Milan and how he’d use us as a stepping stone.
