Gabby Obertan starts the game at Cardiff City this afternoon, after a bright substitute performance at Hartlepool United on Tuesday night when he scored a terrific goal.
Surprisingly neither of Newcastle’s top Senegal strikers Papiss Cisse or Demba Ba is included, even on the bench, and Frenchmen Yohan Cabaye and Ben Arfa are also missing from the line up.
That has to make it doubtful that Yohan will be able to play against Tottenham Hotspur next Saturday afternoon, in Newcastle’s first game of the season.
The defense of Krul, Simpson, Coloccini, Steven Taylor and Davide Santon could be the one that starts next Saturday too.
Ryan Taylor will play on the right wing with Sylvain Marveaux on the left, and it seems that Gabby will play up front partnering Shola Ameobi as a striker.
It seems that Argentine Jonas Gutierrez could be in central midfield alongside Cheick Tiote.
As expected, 17 year-old Adam Campbell, the former Wallsend Boys Club player, is on the bench and it’s very likely he will come on sometime in the second half, for his very first taste of first team football.
Cardiff City will also be wearing their all new red kit, which has caused some annoyance with Cardiff City fans – however their away strip is all blue, and we suppose they’ll continue to be nicknamed The Bluebirds.
Newcastle United (4-4-1-1): Tim Krul; Danny Simpson, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Steven Taylor, Davide Santon; Ryan Taylor, Cheick Tiote, Sylvain Marveaux, Jonas Gutierrez; Gabriel Obertan, Shola Ameobi
Substitutes: Steve Harper, James Perch, Mike Williamson, Romain Amalfitano, Adam Campbell, Haris Vuckic, Dan Gosling

Comment #82interesting to see mav play in the middle..i was thinking maybe him, tiote and cabaye as the middle three with ba, ben arfra and cissie ahead of them and jonas as a lb, with santon moved to rb as a formation we might use in a lot of home games.
also interesting to see obertan pushed forward to a striker role..again, i think it could be a wise move considering our lack of strikers at the mo.
ben afra not being included indicates to me that he will not start against spurs nxt wk. i think pardrew was weary starting ba, cisse and ben afra together considering when got trollied 5-0 when we did it at the end of last season.
places are def up for grabs today but next week i would expect
krul
simspon taylor colo santon
r.taylor or mav tiote cabaye jonas
ba cisse
i would like to see
krul
santon taylor colo jonas
tiote
cabaye mav
ben afra ba
cisse

Comment #119Just read the Ashley Rangers update, so Rangers can loan up to 9 of our players, usually that would be a good thing for a few youngsters to go out, but Scottish Division 3 won’t benefit them much surely.

Comment #120Cisse and Ba probably won’t be at ACON tis year anyway. So no worries yet.
Even if they go we can buy in January.
