James Perch apologized to Newcastle fans after the game yesterday at the Cardiff City Stadium, and he wanted to let the fans know that he understood what it meant to travel to support Newcastle, and a performance like the one they gave yesterday was simply not good enough. We have to agree with James on that one.
Perchinho in Newcatsle’s colors yesterday
Newcastle were 3-0 down after only 26 minutes and that was the game right there, and after that first 30 minutes Newcastle were much improved, but of course the damage had already been done.
It seems to us that the Newcastle defense is prone to collapsing as that’s not the first time we’ve looked hopeless in defense when starting a game, and it happened at Tottenham and at Wigan earlier this year, and it happened in that famous home game against Arsenal – but we managed to famously come back in that game.
There’s something that makes these things happen, and we’re not sure if it’s over confidence or what, but the side doesn’t turn up for some games every now and then, and it always come as a big surprise.
And of course a couple of good new defenders in before the transfer window slams shut, would certainly help things.
The players all looked dejected after the game, which was not too surprising, and it would have been a solemn journey back to Newcastle, after the lads had looked fairly decent in pre-season before yesterday, losing only at FC Chemnitzer before yesterday’s debacle.
Perchinho talked to the Newcastle web-site after the game:
” ‘We let you all down.” “It matters to us because we’re professionals,” “We never want to lose a game and the way we did it, we certainly didn’t want to do that.” “We know that Newcastle fans come in thousands and we have let them down today.”
“And we’ve let ourselves down, I’m not going to say we haven’t let ourselves down today, we’ve let the gaffer down and everyone to do with the club, the players out there.” “But it’s over now. “
“We can’t do anything about it and we look forward to next week. It wasn’t a good performance, we hold our hands up, and we now look forward to the start of the season against Tottenham.”
“I don’t know what it was, we can’t really put our finger on it, but we did improve and should have had a couple more goals.” “I have to give a special mention to the young lad who came on, Campbell. “
“He came on, looked sharp, created chances, maybe should have got a penalty, so it was a good day for him and I think everybody should be really happy with the way he played.”
“When you look back at it, we’ve played alright in some games and we’ve won most of them. It’s just a shame we couldn’t win today, the last one going into the start of the season.”
“But we’ve washed our hands of it now. It’s gone and it’s done and we look forward to working hard on Monday leading up to the Saturday game.”
James Perch didn’t come on until after 28 minutes and by that time we were 3-0 down and the game was lost.
The most positive aspect of the game yesterday, which most seem to agree on, was the performance of 17-year-old debut boy Adam Campbell, and the local lad looked great after he came on late in the game.
Adam was interviewed after the game, and he said he was just hoping to get more Reserve team games under his belt in the coming season – but if he keeps playing like he did yesterday, we haven’t seen the last of this lad in the first team.

Streete did before his injury, Campbell has even gotten the chance to prove himself a bit now.
Tbh, i’d be worrying if i was Amalfitano and Vuckic.

They both played the majority of games last season, especially Simmo and we finished 6th. Best result in nearly 10 years. Get behind your team and players. Its idiots like you who expect us to be challenging for the title.

Comment #6Because Raylor cannot play CM and Guti should never play AM.
We were overrun in midfield again like lat year, putting too much pressure on our defence.
We got stuffed a few times last year and should’ve got stuffed a few more time also. We were lucky last year in many games and our luck may run out. We cannot gamble and I was hoping to see a tactical shift within the team this year to avoid getting played of the park.
Unfortunately as it stands without investment I can see many more 4-1, 5-0 etc…
I can’t see us scoring more than 3 in a game without more control and creativity.
I am still positive we will have investment but if we don’t it’s simple really. We will not finish 5th again unless we are lucky once more!

Have u even watched the highlights?
Have u read the match report?
Have u talked to people who was at the match?
Did we not concede once when Willo came on and scored once too?
Which of the goals was Simmos fault?
Answer all of these properly, then u can say cause Willo and Simmo are Championship level.
Btw, they are better than Championship.

There was a little team who played a little game called football. And when they were good they were very very good but when they were bad they were horrid!
You know the nursery rhyme – “there was a little girl and she had a little curl, right in the middle of her forehead. And when she was good she was very very good, but when she was bad she was fantastic and got lots of jewellery and stuff”. (Well that’s my version)

those are the points i was trying to hint towards. people are talking about match fitness, sharpness, etc, but how is everyone supposed to collectively pull together in a week’s time after not having played together, in position, since may? in my mind it’s a recipe for a spanking next saturday.
anyway, it is what it is. no one was asking for 40, 30, even 20 million. we were just looking for steady, marked improvement. instead, like i said before, it’s all up in the air now. will the youngsters perform? even if they can/will/do, will pards drop a willo for a tavernier? a perch before an abeid or bigi? doubtful in my mind
anyway, off to real work now

And again the answer to your statement is where could we have finished with better than simmo and Willo in the team? We shall never know but they contributed to the 5th place finish, they didn’t make it happen.

Comment #12last thing i’ll say:
i’m beginning to think more and more than santon needs to be played on the wing. his defending can at times be world class but when he’s off, he makes simmo (and god i still hate the sight of him and his high center of gravity meandering helplessly 20 feet away from an attacker) look world class. thoughts?

Comment #13If a Kenyan finished 5th place in the 10k wearing a pair of dr martins ask yourself, should he not spend a little bit more to buy some trainers and see where he finished in the next race?
Simmo and Willo for me are our dr martins. They don’t make the athlete and they offer good grip and stability but we need to get better or else we will be held back.

Comment #14Beattie 25, – we can only be “Lucky” so many times, then it runs out. At that point what do we rely on??
It has been obvious since last season that we need at least 2 GOOD first team additions, not necessarily world class, just good!! If we could get Debuchy or Mbiwa signed up, together with Anita, we will be a far more capable team than we were last season, than we are today.
I just hope we can achieve the additions before we play Spuds – it would be helpful!!

IMO Santon is the type of modern full back only suited to a 5 man midfield.
If he had cover then he’d be amongst the best in the leauge but playing a 4-4-2, the midfield gets out played, santon gets shackled and he doesn’t have the quality around him to play his style.
Simmo also (as I have said time and time again) brings an imbalance to the team. Because he cannot maraude forward he keeps a high line and the back 4 becomes a diagonal line and the 2 man central midfield area becomes disjointed and Santon gets caught to high up the pitch, Simmo is to far back. Colo covers LB, Willo is beaten for pace, Simmo slots into CB and the RW of the opposition has a chance.

But when he does nobody else performs, that is a major issue. He picks up poor performers but we don’t have the quality to pick him up.

just saw your comment about talking ‘out of my depth’ because i said Vuckic has played on the wing three times this season. are you really going to lay that line on me? how could i possibly be speaking out of my depth by mentioning a fact?
and just to remind you, RW is NOT CB. Megson was using him as a RW and that’s why he was brought back to the club, because pards said he saw him as a FB, not a winger. I’m not disputing the fact he can play CB, but is he not the obvious successor to the RB spot? jesus christ there are some people and the stupidity spouted that just irk me on this blog. how is any of that not worthy of discussion?????

Comment #24A lot of people are way too worried.
Yes it would be good if we improved Simmo and willo but we had the third list clean sheets last season.
The problem with the team was when there was one problem the wheels came off.
We do need more cover at cb. Saylor and collo are good. Good might become a top player and he may be ready now but from experience somebody with so little time in the sport is not likely to be ready for the prem yet.
Tav might also be ready but that’s still a big ask.

+ santon on the wing? So we have
Marveux, jonas, santon, ba, ben arfa(can but not well) who all play left wing and
– playing LB
Probably a better plan to keep santon as a LB for the time being… :S

It’s not fact that Vuckic has played on the wing 3 times mate, he was shifted out there in the game against Olympiakos, that’s it.
And if AP reckons Tav can do it at CB, he can. Tav also says he has no preference in the backline in a post match interview.
He likes it across the board. He even showed that playing LB in the pre-season too.
He’s a good player, he’s young, he’ll get quickly used to a CB position.
The last line was cheeky, and i apoligize, it was unwarranted. Same as u, some posts basically angers me, so i took a swing, I’m sorry.

Comment #28What people seem to miss when discussing our poor performances is our inability to keep the ball and dictate the pace of the game. Players like Cabaye help us do this as can Ben arfa and marveaux on their day and it is also why collo is so good. All the top teams with good defensive records can do this and it is drilled into all of their squad. If the opposition don’t have the ball they can’t score. Unfortunately this is where simmo Willo and others fall down. They are not comfortable on the ball and give it away cheaply with hoofs or sloppy passes and while quite sound defensively in a tackle it puts the pressure straight back on the team. For this reason another ball playing mid like Anita would be brill as would Douglas debuchy etc for exactly the same reason. I also agree with whoever said the team is not balanced because Simpson does not push on enough. Oh and also when vukic plays up top the ball does not stick enough which again puts the team under pressure. With our first 11 most of these issues will disappear. Can’t wait for next weekend 🙂

I don’t really understand why you defend them. Not even the players think Simmo is good enough for RB, otherwise Cabaye wouldn’t be so desperate to get Debuchy in, and we all know Simmo will be a cup game player if Debuchy joins.
And Willo? Come on. How many more 4 or 5 goal drubbings do you need before you see the truth? The fact that we conceded more goals than most in the top 10 last season is evidence that our defense is our weakest area and frankly MUST be improved if we’re going to push for glory.

Comment #36On finishing 5th:
1. It was lucky because our usual rivals underperformed/had injuries/ management problems;
2. We won’t finish 5th again because we have stood still or gone backwards as we haven’t (yet) strengthened the starting 11;
3. We finished 5th because we had Simmo and Willo;
4. We finished 5th in spite of having Simmo and Willo.
5. We would have finished 4th if we had two better players in their positions.
There are two circular arguments here.
A. We had an exceptional season. 1 & 2 above
In 2012-3 Our rivals will still have the usual footballing problems of injuries, fallings out, bad signings, poor management, poor runs etc., regardless of how much money they have spent. We might have a lot more games, but only if we have a strong enough team to get past qualifiers and past average opposition (e.g. FA Cup), otherwise we’ll just have the EPL to concentrate on. Other sides have new managers and exactly the same issues to face.
Mancini is hopping they’ve signed nobody frinstance
B. Our defence shipped a lot of goals last season, far more than a 5th finish side ought to have. The whole back 4 and the DMs in front of them are all responsible as it is a team game. The weakest links are not always the same two guys above – other players have off games or we come up against somebody on fire. However, the chances of shipping fewer goals improves if we have better players or a larger pool of good defenders. We need to be looking at the defences of tighter sides not just those above us. What are we doing wrong ? It is much more complicated than two lumps of deadwood, who are evidently capable at EPL level, just maybe not consistently at top EPL level. Answer …. get in new players to strengthen for sure , rejig defence but do not blame just the two most average players..who are okay most of the time.
It’s the games when we are at our most feeble that cause the problems, not the good ones.

I cant agree with you about players coming in, my patience is running out and we need a couple of players in by spurs. With the way things are going it doesn’t look like anyone will be brought in.
I don’t think Colo’s injured as well. It’s just a ploy so he dosent have to go on international duty. But our possible line up ( with injuries and Ramadan)
—————–Krul————-
—Simpson Saylor Colo Santon—
-Oba /Guti perch gosling Guti/ marv
————Shola Ba/cisse———
Now I’m not saying we’ll start with that, but with Cabaye and HBA unfit and Tiote injured AGAIN! As well as Ba and cisse on ramadan ( which I can’t see both starting) that line up will get beaten comfortably by a decent spurs team
