Newcastle Again Linked With International Striker

10:30 am, Tuesday, August 14th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 76 Comments

Newcastle have again been linked with PSV’s Swedish International striker Ola Toivonen, this time in talkSPORT, but it’s difficult to know if Newcastle are really interested in him, or whether it’s just paper talk – again.

Ola Toivonen – are Newcastle really interested in this striker?

The new news today is that Newcastle will face competition from Russian club Rubin Kazan for the signature of the 26 year-old Eindhoven striker, always assuming Newcastle are interested in the player.

If this news is true, then the Russian club have lots of money and they could easily outbid Newcastle, who are still after good bargains in the transfer market, otherwise they will not bother bringing players to the club.

It’s been a little painful this summer so far for Newcastle fans, who have yet to see Newcastle get one of their top targets through the door, although we seem very close on signing Vurnon Anita from Ajax.

The 26-year-old played for Sweden in the recent Euro 2012 tournament, and after three years at PSV, after joining them from Malmö FF for around €4M (£3.2M), he is willing to move to pastures anew.

And the latest news according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, is that Rubin Kazan are willing to offer Toivonen £15K/week to move to the city of Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan.

That’s not a huge wage, and even within Newcastle’s range they will offer any new players coming to the club this summer, and Ola would come fairly cheap in the transfer market too.

But if Newcastle are to bring in another striker in the summer,  surely it should be somebody who’s young and can still improve?

And we don’t even know if a striker is still a priority for Newcastle in this summer’s transfer window.

We don’t rate Ola as a player too much, although he could come fairly cheaply - what do you think?

Comments welcome.

this is what spurs fans are having as their line up against us

4-2-3-1 Friedel; Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen, BAE; Sandro, Sigurdsson; VDV, Bale, Lennon; Defoe

Liverpool about to finalise Nuri Sahin transfer! Watched this lad in Germany and he is a truly top class player, shame we weren’t in for him really! He could go on to become one of the very top midfielders in the world!

  • 4 dmac // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:34 AM

Im with Jtoon granted i havent seen alot of this guy but im not massively excite by the prospect. Id much rather we try again for Gameiro now he is so far down pecking order.

    Regarding Obertan

    JdDubai

    Load of crap.

Benny was helped by his reputation, goal against Everton and subsequent leg break.

All this combined to make him a fan favourite. Obertan hasn’t been given a fair chance and least you forget he was in the team that went 11 unbeaten at the start of the season.

He came from a place where narrow minded fans expect every player to be world class despite their ahe and his confidence was smashed. He comes to our club with the supposed ‘greatest fans in football’ and we say after 90 minutes, ‘what a waste of money!’.

The lads got ability. Any footballing enthusiast can see glimpses of it but when tea bagging cock fiddlers abuse rather than support it’s going to fcuk you up.

Simspon has had 3 seasons on tynside, Obertan has had 1. There is a big difference between the 2 players and any comparison is stupid. Like a comparison between yourself and lion o from the thundercats.

Shut up with your insesent abuse of Obertan, cheer the lad if you ever get to come back from Dubai and see what confidence can do for people.

  • 6 jayphoto // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:36 AM

I rate toivenen, hes a better striker than Ameobi, and than Best or Lovenkrands were! Wouldn’t be my first choice but he would strengthen the team from last season! Can play AM aswell if we go 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 quite effectively! He’s good in the air too, defending and attacking set peices! My first choice would be Remy, followed by Carroll but I would much prefer toivenen over guidetti who is crazily overrated!

    Link to that story?

  • 8 jayphoto // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:39 AM

agree with Beattie on Obertan! He’s got all the attributes, we need to get behind him because with confidence he’d be a top player! Think he’s had a raw deal, he played every game of our unbeaten start to the season last year, along with simpson and R.Taylor and shola for many of them! We had all 4 of them on the pitch and went unbeaten for 14 games…..can they all be that bad?

  • 9 jayphoto // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:41 AM

the Nuri Sahin one? It was from Guillem Balague!

  • 10 AMEOBI // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:42 AM

    He’s useless…

Who’s AJ? There’s loads lol there AJ from wwe, I’d gladly take her ?
Adam johnson is my guessing, there’s also Andy Johnson (bit too old)

  • 11 wynsleap // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:42 AM

Said it before and I’ll say it again – don’t rate this guy.
Don’t think he’s any step up from Best and Shola.
There have got to be better strikers out there for the money.

  • 12 Ian Toon // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:42 AM

Obertan has not been supported by the fans in part because he is viewed as a Man U cast off. As Pardew said he lacks confidence
and not ability. He gets into good positions but passes when he should have shot. He scored a terrific goal against Blackburn and has the ability to play through the middle . When Man U signed him they saw him as a Terry Henri player let’s not drive him out and watch him blossom elsewhere.

  • 13 Beattie25 // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:46 AM

If the Scousers sign Sahin I’ll be sick!

    He is one talented footballer!

    http://www.footybunker.com/man-utd-target-aly-cissokho-eyeing-up-premier-league-move/22621

We could do with making a move before the Spurs game. Our line-up should hopefully look like this:

    Krul

    Santon Saylor Coloccini Cissokho

    Tiote Anita

    Cabaye Marveaux

    Cisse Ba

  • 18 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:52 AM

We could start Abeid and drop either Ba or Cisse.

  • 19 Beattie25 // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:53 AM

If Alonso signs for Liverpool I’ll put on a blonde wig and let bramble buy me a drink.

It’s not going to happen ever.

    Same old delsusional Scousers.

When did that happen by the way? When did the Scousers become so delusional??

  • 20 Macas // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:53 AM

Obertan is too mentally fragile to make it as a footballer. He had plenty support at the start of last season and a long run of games but failed to impress anyone, he will always be too inconsistent. If Swansea offer £3M we should accept it and sign that Korean winger Lee from Bolton instead

    Thank you.

I think so many on here disregard players they dont know much about.

People are keen on Carroll here but their vision is clouded by sentiment.

This guy is a better striker, may be older but he is. Better finisher, faster than Carroll and provides a very good Aerial option for air balls. He is also stronger on the ball and can take people on at times.

He is the kind of striker that can play well off another striker as well as play the withdrawn role.

People praise Pardew for going for versatile players. This guy may not be the best in terms of a goal record (though his is not bad) but he is probably the most versatile striker we have been linked with this window.

This guy scored 18 in 27 last season. 15 in 26 the season before. Thats more than a goal every 2 games which is a very respectable strike rate for a guy. But also factor in that until last season he was played in the supporting role. He is another player, just like Ba and Cisse that has shown a proficiency for scoring goals over years as apposed to one good season.

I know its the dutch league but that is one of the leagues where players can easily adapt to the Prem from along with the french league.

He is thought to be rated at £7m. That may be a bit steep for us but compared to other strikers with his ability that is comparatively nothing,

  • 22 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Aug 14, 2012 at 10:54 AM

    Kyo…

    1) Yes you do from time to time.
    2) Ed will post news and links about Newcastle for us to discuss, that is after all the point of this blog.
    3) Then eat – What were you saying about posting about anything?

Kets….A decent shout, although unlikely to be in place by Saturday.

  • 23 cupiddstunt // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM

    Sorry to repeat but,

    JDdubai @ # 56 of previous thread

Like so many other that frequent this blog you come out with some sensible observations like,

“only problem is by then we will have already played Spurs and Chelsea, 2 of our rival teams.”

“Surely we can see that these are 6 pointers and I would have wanted to get the deals sorted to give us the chance to take maximum out of these games.”

“surely you would want Anita in ASAP so he has as much time as poss to make the game, especially with Tiote an injury worry.”

Then you link them all together with badly faulted supposition and conjecture.

Do you honestly think the board is completely unaware of the need to have these issues addressed as quickly as possible, or are these things just something you alone have thought about??????

It is almost a cast iron guarantee that the board has been working to get these issues sorted long before day one of the window.

Carr said in an interview that the club work none stop at recognising and trying to acquire the right targets and all this long before the windows open.

If you really think you are ahead of the board in recognising these shortcomings then you have an ego that is way beyond your ability to feed.

The club had its targets set long before the window opened and were trying to get them in long before the Euro’s escalated their prices, this I think was obvious but in reading your posts I think it was less obvious to some.

  • 24 jesperfuglsang // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:01 AM

I still this just an old news story the media is recycling :-)

  • 25 LGFUAD21 // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:01 AM

I would be thrilled with Cissokho, use the teeth issue to knock down the price. Another gem whose hype died but still has the ability and potential to be a huge player. Has the defensive and attacking ability. Was desperate for him last summer. Cissokho and Santon as full backs.

Santon will develop, he crashed in Italy due to confidence issues and having so much hype at such a young age.

    20Macas

You reckon. The crowd on his back booing him off cant help. Shameful that day. I was there and felt like walking out and going to support another team (my other half of the families) with more grateful fans. I was so angry. You could see already he had confidence issues. And at that point you could consider it essentially his first proper season in the Prem given he played 14 times in 2 years for Manure and mainly as a sub.

    Disgrace.

I have confidence he will make it. As a supporting striker, let him get some goals in the league and FA cup. When his confidence is up he will be a good player.

  • 26 Kyo // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:01 AM

    @Macas

I agree, Obertan has to go. I’m sure Carr and Pards have replacements in mind already.

  • 27 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:02 AM

Would anyone take Miralem Sulejmani from Ajax?

  • 28 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:02 AM

    Cupid…Sensible toon fans? Where?

I think you’re wrong about the board. I think Carr and Pardew put together their list and then Ashley and Llambias shake their magic 8 ball and decide whether to proceed.

  • 29 AMEOBI // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:03 AM

    Beattie,

You never know they’re mad enough to splash 25m for Alonso then fair enough, I do like to watch football so it would be lovely to see him back in the prem.

  • 32 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:03 AM

I’d take the following 4 players from Ajax:

    Anita
    Alderewerield
    Stefano Denswil
    Sulejmani

They would improve the squad drastically.

  • 33 AMEOBI // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:05 AM

Why say Obertan needs to go? You do need competetive players to battle for first team to bring the best out of a starting 11, squad is small as it is.
Some people give your heads a shake!

  • 39 Beattie25 // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:08 AM

Cissokho won’t sign for us but out of all the FB’s we’ve been linked to he is the one of like to see the most rampaging up and down the wing with Santon up the right and the Anita-Tiote partnership covering!

    Tasty

Ok today you have been well behaved. But in the past you have said some silly things. But I dont see it as a character flaw. I think you just like to get a rise out of the super serious, uptight on here.

“Jermain Defoe has warned Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas he does not want to go through another ‘heartbreaking’ year on the substitutes’ bench. The likes of Sunderland, QPR and Reading are all thought to be keeping tabs on the striker’s situation at White Hart Lane.”

He has a lot of faith then :) Only striker there and he’s still not sure he’ll get game time.

M’baye Niang was actually the forward I wanted :-(

  • 44 JDdubai // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:10 AM

    Cupid

Regardless of the Euros or teams changing prices etc, my point was that we have spurs in 4 days, Tiote is doubtful yes? So why 24 hours after the fee was agreed for Anita has his dad come out and said that there has still been no contact from Newcastle and they havent even been invited over for talks.

This was the point, everything that has gone on previously this summer is irrelevant on this point. Chelseas and Spurs are 6 pointers, I would have thought that the board would want to get Anita in ASAP so he is ready for saturday thats all.

  • 45 Beattie25 // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:11 AM

    Yes.

Defoe is a good striker in my eyes. Still got some pace for his age too.

One of my spuds friends said he was planning on going to the game. Until he realised we will probably win (his words not mine)

  • 49 iggystinger // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:13 AM

Evertons meant to have jumped in front of arsenal and spurs to get him there now favourites to land him maybe we should jump in see what happens hes a good player

  • 50 Kyo // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Why are you lot jumping on me for not liking Obertan? He didn’t improve at Manure, he didn’t improve with us… You want to keep him forever?

I support our players on the pitch but every team looks to improve by replacing players they feel are not up to their standard, and Obertan is one of those players.

Remember Owen? You’d keep him too?

  • 51 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Ameobi…It does make me laugh. It’s usually the same people that say we don’t have enough players that say we need to get rid of Obertan, Simpson and Willo.

  • 52 JDdubai // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Beattie its good that you still think Obertan will come good. I would be happy if he did, plenty of players have come good after a season or 2.

I just cant say I have seen anything ever from him to suggest he is more than a sprinter in football boots. If he once, even just once went past a player with a piece of skill then I would have patience as it would show that somewhere in there there is ability. I just cant remember seeing him ever produce it thats all, and he’s what 23/24 now? Surely at some point before this he should have produced.

Just my opinion, you are allowed yours fair enough.

Ok cupid, if you can’t discuss in an intelligent manner then why are YOU here?

I haven’t insulted anyone. I’m criticising a player and you’re just telling me to f off without any debate to try and change my mind about him, or to see it in your way. Ok.

  • 59 Nick 69 // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:21 AM

I wouldn’t get rid of Obertan, although I also don’t agree with people who say he hasn’t had a chance, as he actually started more games than HBA last season. He was given a chance, and fans were behind him at first, but its a two way street, you cant expect to keep being given chances if you do nothing with those chances to impress people. I’d keep him for at least this season, however I don’t think he’ll ever have consistency, and will only ever make a decent impact player

  • 60 iggystinger // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:21 AM

To me the problem with obertan is when he comes up one on one with a player he doesnt believe he can beat them he doesnt know what todo and ends up making the wrong decision he almost always trys to make an inside pass gives it away or loses control of the ball its obviously a mental, confidence thing if he can sort that out he could be a good player as weve all said u see it in glimpses

  • 61 LGFUAD21 // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:23 AM

It’s not that you dislike players. It’s that you appear to be unable to articulate Action Man’s arm let alone your own views.

  • 65 Kyo // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:25 AM

    @iggy

I think Obertan is either playing the wrong position or he needs to be coached for 1v1 situations. We always see him just running in a straight line as fast as he can which never works for him unfortunately. He’s fast but far far too predictable.

I think if he tried cup games as a striker then maybe he can abuse high line defenders. We’ll see I guess. Pards knew how to get the best out of HBA but I don’t think he knows what to do with Obertan yet, because as he said in the Q&A, Obertan needs confidence to get the engine running.

  • 68 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:30 AM

I think that only realistic article from Talksport was the £15m from Liverpool for Raylor.

I can understand that Liverpool wanted Raylor as he was actually born around there and would offer a lot to their team, but I’d accept around £9m-10m for him as he’s an influential player and deserves to start ahead of Simpson on Saturday.

  • 69 Nick 69 // Aug 14, 2012 at 11:30 AM

LGFUAD21 – I didn’t say write him off, I actually said i’d keep him for this season at least, and see how it goes, however I don’t think he’ll ever be more than an impact player.

Obertan reminds me of lovenkrands when he was at rangers he played almost identical to how obertan does with us the crowd started to get on his back etc he lost confidence but he kept askin to be played thro the middle and not one manager did until mcleish against villareal lovenkrands scored a beauty and looked a totally different player he then went to schalke and was played thro the middle and was one of the top goalscorers in germany i think it was 18 goals and i think obertan would be better in that position im not sayin hed score 18 goals but just floatin behind the strikers what do u guys think

As long as Wimpson and Silliamson leave the club, I’ll be happy. We’ll then have no poor players in the squad. The weak-links would then be identified in Obertan, Gosling, Perch and Ferguson. They are all young and deserve the opportunity to impress.

Kets…Then I think you’re in for one unhappy season mate.

Anita and now Toivonen…maybe I’m Graham Carr !

If Pieters comes in next I might get a call from Pards ;)

Ketsbia just secretly wants a 3way with willo and simmo and is so bitter about his feelings he overcompensates with hatred. Try make a wish foundation fella

Oi, leave off Kyo! I would always support a player at a match, and not boo etc ( ridiculous) , but every fan is entitled to an opinion. Obertan has had plenty of game time but shown little , and lacks fight aswell. I’m happy to keep him, but I’ll trust what I see aswell as respect what Pards says. Hopefully he’ll come through, but i’m not sure its going to be as a winger.
