Is The Huge Agent Fee Holding Up The Anita Deal?

11:58 am, Wednesday, August 15th, 2012 by Ed Harrison · 398 Comments

There is news coming out of Holland today that Vurnon Anita’s new agent Mino Raiola could be getting a fee of £1.5M for pushing through the deal for his new client Vurnon Anita to Newcastle, and while it”s good money if you can get it, maybe Newcastle are balking at his fee, which is large to say the least.

Mino Raiola – renowned Italian agent

If Anita is going for €8.5M, which is around £6.6M, then the agent’s fee is close to 24% and that’s simply ridiculously high. The job of football clubs is to sign on players for a good price and not to make their agents rich.

But agents have got into the football game big time over the last several years, and they are making money hand over fist with the transfer of their clients, but Newcastle is one club who have balked more than once at exorbitant fees being asked by agents.

Railoa only seemed to be hired by Anita a week or so ago, and he was renowned for pushing through deals quickly, so we thought that was good,  since that’s not what Newcastle are very good at.

The Italian agent one of the super agents (that means he makes super money), and is famous for doing all the deals for Swedish International Ibrahimovic over the last decade, to both Milan clubs and only recently when the Swedish striker joined mega rich PSG in the French league, which is a step down for playing in the Italian league,  as far as football standards go.

But if this news is correct the price of Anita goes from £6.6M to around £8.1M including Railoa’s fee for Newcastle, so that a big increase – a 24% increase overall.

Something seems to be holding up the Anita deal, and it could well be super fee being asked by his super agent.

What do you think?

It could very well be but I doubt it

I would think it has something to do with it, but who knows?

Someone claimed that Anita has arrived in Newcastle? Has this been confirmed other than on Twitter?

Amazingly, the fact it’s gone quiet actually makes me more confident something is happening, as that is they way the club likes to work.

Dont care who we pay as long as we get the lad. There was some info released last year were it proved we are prepared to pay agents decent fees, so it shouldnt stop the deal.

Come on lets see this lad in Black and White, Saturday hopefully, will give everyone a lift, the club needs to continually improve or it will go backwards..

No agent is worth that amount of money

  • 7 cupiddstunt // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:08 PM

Sorry posted on wrong thread it shold have been this one

unless of course the parties involved expect nufc to pay all the fees, which to be perfectly honest I think if I were nufc I would be telling the folks involved that he is your agent you pay him, which in turn could well be holding proceedings up. :)

  • 8 stu.toon // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:08 PM

What exactly has the agent done? It was no secret we were after anita anyway, the clubs were already talking. This bloke has only been his agent for a short time and now expects a £1.5m payout….get me a job!

Got nothing to do with the agent!!

It’s Anita himself not sure whether he will play first team football, his dad wants him over in Italy. His dad was his agent when Anita first started out and tried to force a move to Napoli when he was 21 however it didn’t go through as they couldn’t agree on a fee

Anita being clever a trying to hold out for other offers, agent fee rarely holds up transfers

Apart from the understanding of legal jargon as in contracts both reading and forming them.

Contacts and the ability to daeal at the big tables.

And the little matter of licences.

Outside of that nothing hard so best of luck

  • 19 Kyo // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:16 PM

Or it could just be the fact that Anita and Pardiola haven’t had a good chat yet. Last we heard, he was still in Holland.

What about a little Shearer Q&A while Anita signs his Newcastle contract? :)

    Here’s the first Q:

How many times was Alan the club’s top scorer in his 10 seasons at Newcastle United?

  • 24 mickhall4 // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:20 PM

    @kyo

Isn’t in Holland, apparently the taxi driver who posted yesterday was right. He arrived late last night and was at stadium for an hour.

His father arrives today for tour of the city etc. still no sightings though and no info on where they are staying.

As I’ve said though, no medical has been scheduled so that’s says everything is still not certain. If NUFC were certain about getting this guy signed the medical would of happened last night or early this morning

  • 25 Jail for Ashley // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:22 PM

According to thr lads on talksport last night where he’s going to play is a deciding factor although versatility is his biggest asset it pretty much has him starting intermittent games when he’s needed, apparently he eants assurances of first team football, which I suppose Pards csnt give.

    In a nut shell bud.

If he is not too sure about signing for us then he is probably not for us.

Nobody can expect to join a team on the up and have nailed on play time.

If he is good enough then he need not worry

  • 37 mickhall4 // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:30 PM

    @AshtreeKid

When a fee is agreed with a club for a player, they sign some sort of contract at that point. There’s something in that contract which makes Newcastle liable for players transport etc. so Newcastle basically cover all costs and that includes if he doesn’t sign.

His dad is on a seperate flight with another family member apparently, so Newcastle will probably cover that cost as well even though they don’t have to

  • 38 davybtoon // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:31 PM

Don’t see how pardew can’t garentee him first team football he would go straight into a 3 man midfield with cabaye n tiote

  • 39 Tsunki // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:34 PM

Stick em all on the bus to tynemouth so they can get the ferry back if he don’t sign. They do offers.

  • 40 G // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:34 PM

I think when it comes to agents in football, then the people above who quoted them as a fact of life, are correct, however, I used to love Bobby’s philosophy of agents, when he refused to deal with them, so the club had to employ an agent to deal with agents over transfers. I must confess, I hate to be in the same room as a parasite, and agents in my opionion, are parasites by and large.

  • 41 AshtreeKid // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:35 PM

even so its dangerous to guarentee every player needs to fight for their place in the team

  • 42 davybtoon // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:36 PM

It makes sense that if you are after getting someone to come to your club you act nice with them.

If they were acting really like a dick then possible you tell them to make their own way home but it would get around that you behaved in a petty fashion and it would not show well on the club

  • 44 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:37 PM

I would imagine the assurances he is looking for are in light of Ba being played LW and not being thrilled. Players like Raylor at LB. Oh and Santon not playing RB when that’s clearly where he belongs ;)

  • 48 LooneyToon41 // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:40 PM

It’s so difficult to Speculate, as informal terms can often be agreed with players(and agents) even before, a fee is agreed with the selling club. Think Ashley Cole, Emre and most recently Enrique leaving and Cabaye arriving. As, Anita’s just changed his agent, this may not be relevant in this case, but this change of agent may be very relevant in the time things are taking.
Personally, i’d very very surprised if he doesn’t sign, as Anita has basically burned a few bridges at Ajax already by publicly refusing the new contract offered by the dutch team.

  • 49 cupiddstunt // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:41 PM

    G @ # 40

Right in some respect but at one time the clubs with their legal eagles used to take the p**s out of players and have some really ludicrous clauses in contracts that the players could not get out of as they had signed on the dotted line so to speak.

Hence players started to get legal representation, and now we have the football agent, so clubs are now paying for the way they treated the players in the past.

  • 50 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:41 PM

For christ’s sake man ashley just pay him the fee he wants. I know its not right but a couple of years ago when i bought my first car it cost £ 2000 to insure it for the year (only a 1.2 BTW) and it p*ssed me right off.

Morale of the story – if I didn’t pay the money I would not have been able to drive, therefore if we dont pay what they want he will walk away

  • 51 toonLYF // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:41 PM

on Gosling, realistically, i don’t think he’s done anything to prove he’s “coming through”. His challenges are rash, his decision making is fairly poor, he never seems that comfortable on the ball, and doesn’t have that extra something to warrant him playing for Newcastle United. To put it bluntly, he should be sold imo, as at 22 year old, he should be showing strong positive sign, and the lad has done absolutely nothing that made me think – this lad looks a player…i’d say Bigirimana has already showed more promising signs than Gosling, and Abeid certainly has. So i’d rather give one of them the chance than continuing to be persistant with Gosling. Send him off to West Ham or something.

wish him all the best, and i would be happy if he came good, happier if it was at Newcastle, but i really really can’t see that happening.

  • 52 Jail for Ashley // Aug 15, 2012 at 12:43 PM

I don’t think its as simple as him demanding first team football he wants to know what role Pards has for him doesn’t sound like he wants to come in and be Mr Versatility where his best position for the team is on the bench ,Aaron Hughes spring to mind.

Yes a better simile than car insurance in my opinion, spin doctors very much so and ambulance chasers very much so.

A little bit of the “Hitch Hikers Guide” there football agents should maybe join the list like hair dressers, telephone sanitisers and middle management.

fair enough in this case if he’s not jumped at the chance to sign us! He already said earlier on in the summer that newcastle are a massive
club and it’d be a great place to play, just hes 23, this is one of the most important moves in his career and he wants to make sure he’s not being signed to play left back! As a centre midfielder he is very very strong and has a good chance of breaking into the dutch first team if he plays well in the premier league, but at left back he can do a job, but it is make shift and its nowhere near his stronger position! I think the reason for the hold up is that he wants to make sure he’s being signed for a set position (centre mid) and not as multi cover to start from the bench!

By all accounts the agent is noted for moving deals along fast so maybe he has the supermarket philosophy, smaller margins but move them fast means more money in the long run.

To be honest I do not think it is the agent holding things up I feel it is Anita and his family that are just not rushing into things and in some ways rightly so

  • 74 stu.toon // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:14 PM

@big pappa cisse that attitude in football is how agents get away with these massive payouts. You can discuss contracts and working conditions etc. for a lot less than £1.5m, maybe the £2k u paid for ur carinsurance

  • 75 Kyo // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:18 PM

Yeah I don’t see it being the agent tbh. They are parasites but if he’s known to push deals quickly then I’m guessing clubs don’t have a problem with his fees.

Think it’s just a case of him and his father getting into the city and having a cup of green tea with Pardiola.

Maybe even slap on the Season Review 2011/2012 DVD lol

  • 76 cupiddstunt // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:20 PM

    stu.toon @ # 74

I am not defending the agents here but I think they probably do a lot of work in the background and I think that is agent the world over in all walks not just football.

The fees they get are a pre-agreed % of the earnings of their client so he would have got a lot more for the dealings with Zlatan then what he is getting from Anita.

Sometimes by agreement in the deal the fee’s are paid by the buying club but it is all taken into consideration in the price.

When you think about it agents have two small windows in the year when they have to move their merchandise and to delay those moves risk losing the move all together so no fee.

So in reality it’s probably in the agents best interests to not overly delay a deal, we see it as being greedy just because the sums involved are beyond the capacity of most of us to earn.

The agent that handled Torres to chelski if they were on 10% with Torres then they were in for 5mil, so I do not think it is greed as such but just that is the contract “I am your agent I get x%”

I think the only delay in those circumstances are “Who pays the fees”

  • 86 pardews plan B // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:32 PM

Judging by that picture the headline would also work as “is the huge agent’s fee holding up the anita deal?”

On a serious note i don’t think this is the problem. Think its more to do with family and happiness.

I agree with what you are saying but if the contract signed says agents fees x% then that’s what is due regardless of how long he has represented him.

Which is why you often find the previous agent making so claim on the fee as being his rep up until just before the deal was made.

  • 91 stu.toon // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:36 PM

But still is there a need for agents in the game? Could the player not talk terms with the club and each club have a soul neutral employee to make sure everything is fair and legal?

  • 92 MacToon // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:38 PM

All he has to do is walk out at SJP Saturday, job done ;-)
He’ll wanna play for nothing like me!

  • 93 pardews plan B // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:38 PM

Does anybody think rogers told the swansea board “i don’t want Allen sold for less than 15million”
then was forced to pay that to buy him.
    Oh that’d be ironic

  • 94 Novocastrian66 // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:39 PM

The agent is often employed by the player and the buying club, to whom the agent charges a fee.
The player expects the buying club to pay his bill. The buying club will want to try and keep expenditure at a minimum, but if they want the deal to go through they have to stump up I’m afraid.

  • 95 ToonDownSouth // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:40 PM

That’s a mental comment from Rodgers, given that he said he would happily have paid more than £15m if neccessary!

  • 96 jesperfuglsang // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:43 PM

Cupid…maybe a more fair take on it would be if agents were more like a lawyer. You employ him when need papirs finalised and you pay him for his work.

So the question about who pays the agent is really more simple then; his client does ;)

Anyways footballers are payed too much, maybe tht is why agents are as well – but they are an inconvient link, one that doesn’t really add value to the game.

But hi, what do I know ;) I am as blue eyed as they come ;) lol

  • 97 cupiddstunt // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:44 PM

    stu.toon @ # 91

As I have already posted clubs used to take players to the cleaners prior to the emergence of the agent.

Accepting that SOME players are less than bright but very talented football wise they would not have a leg to stand let alone one to kick a ball with when the clubs legal eagles got trough with him.

Also the neutral you talk about would realise their importance in the deals and slowly increase thier costs until low and behold we would see the emergence of football agents earning crazy money.

  • 98 surreytoon // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:46 PM

The agent fee must be a % of earnings over the duration of the contract e.g. 5 years. So £1.5m is around £5700 a week which at 10% would put Anita on £57k a week… not quite right if my numbers are correct, I estimate he would be getting around £35k.

I’ve been checking the Ajax.netwerk.to forums in the hope they are closer to the details, but they aren’t. They are also bemused it is taking a while and holding onto hope he stays the longer it goes on. The general view is:

    - Newcastle is a grey industrial city and a poor team, why is he going there?

    - He is concerned about the position he will play and the number of starts he will get. They seem to think we will play him at fullback, as we have Cabaye, Tiote and Bigi (!) and that may count against the deal

    - He could do better than us, why hasn’t some other club come in for him, some are speculating this may be the case

They really are up themselves and some of the comments about Newcastle are really getting to me; feel like going on there and putting them straight but they will just gang up no doubt!

  • 100 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:48 PM

    Cupid @97…Spot on.

The only way to start getting things back on a level playing field is for owners to refuse to do deals with inflated prices. Something we seem to be trying to do. The downside to this is their are teams willing to pay these fee’s, so in the short term we miss out.

At some point this will have to be addressed, no way if financial fair play rules are enforced can clubs keep paying out the transfer fees, agents fees and ridiculous wages…or can they?

  • 101 Sazzer // Aug 15, 2012 at 1:49 PM

  • 109 Oldgit1 // Aug 15, 2012 at 2:02 PM

Im not having healthy thoughts on anita, he appears to be wanting to dictate too many of his own terms.
No other team is in for him so why did he replace his dad on the eve of the transfer fee being agreed with an agent.
He appears too demanding to play in cm and playing time, yet you get young lads who are more than willing to abide their time their time and are willing to play anywhere in any position for the sake of the team.
Sorry I maybe reading this all wrong but he appears it self self all the time.
If the agent demands are as reported, I for one will be happy for the club to walk away from this deal.

The neggers on here are far more football wise that he is, so when they say it is Willo and Simpson it has to be Willo and Simpson.

A deal could be done today. The player may have chatted over the phone or been in the city if the reports are true and had his chat.

It could now be up to the board and his agent to agree personal terms. Then a medical tomorrow or later in the week and job done.

Or it could all fall through and we’d have missed out again

    I see this two ways.

    1. If he wants to be guaranteed to play cm stay at Ajax.

Ajax see Anita as a key member of the team, along with Alderwereild, VDW and De Jong, so I’m sure that at the least he would get in our first team. I would like to think if we play 4-3-3 he would play CM, then guti could covert to LW or to utility. Basically it is Anita or Guti to be the utility man

“Khalid Boulahrouz, Ron Vlaar, Gregory van der Wiel, Stijn Schaars, Vurnon Anita, Jordy Clasie, Siem de Jong, Luuk de Jong and Ola John all missed the cut.”

Anita would not of traveled yesterday if he was. I’m hearing from my contacts that he is here till tomorrow morning so if not signed tonight or first thing tomorrow i’m afraid he wont be signing i don’t think.

P.S That Luuk De Jong has already fell out with his new coach at Borrusia in training. Glad we didnt sign him

  • 127 jayphoto // Aug 15, 2012 at 2:47 PM

@APBWA – ajax don’t see VDW as a key member, hes really unpopular with the fans and they want to replace him as soon as possible! Was a player that looked excellent 4 years ago but never recovered fully from an injury and has never fulfilled his potential! In holland he’s regarded as the weak link in ajax defense! People on here get confused because they’ve never actually watched him and go on fifa and fm ratings, in that case, he is immense!

  • 136 niafron // Aug 15, 2012 at 2:57 PM

    Zouma?

17 years old, and it’s said QPR could spend 12 millions euros to sign him…

Sound a bit mad honnestly. Anyway, no one believe he will leave France now.
Cause he got no interest to sign for a club like QPR, and as you said, he’s too young to be an important player in a great club.

He made interesting games for the ASSE for sure.

Well, a club like Newcastle, who is far more prestigious than QPR and may give him more play time could perhaps be a good step for him.

But he’s a bit expansive for Ashley, and his lack of experience probably not fit Pard.

i guess VDW is a mirror image of simpson in regards to some fans like him, others don’t! Maybe more similar to santon at inter where his potential was massive and his break through season was great but hes not lived upto the hype, and a massive opinion in Holland is that he believes he’s own hype a little too much! hes a bit of a wannabe rapper gangsta like our good ol’ Nile ranger! Saying that, I work in Amsterdam for a week every 3 months or so (tho not since last feb) and always go to watch a game and he’s never played awfully for me! Same with anita, never seen either of them amaze me but they always looked solid! The ajax player im never impressed with is the lad kets is always bangin on about, Soujlemani

I am thinking this lad is like a cross between Clarence Seedorf and Edgar Davids, hope im not being a little over optimistic.

The kid is clearly a gud little footballer, similar to Joe Allen i imagine, only for a third of the price, however he is little, this concerns me that our team is crying out for a bit more presence, hopefully Debuchy and Douglas will eventually provide this. Indeed – I do wish we had someone with some height and presence in the middle of the pitch. Obviously we won’t be signing another CM, so we’ll have to make do.

  • 201 ToonDownSouth // Aug 15, 2012 at 3:33 PM

Everton could be doing some very decent business in the transfer market. I really fancy them to do well next year.

They’ve got a few players of real class dotted around the pitch now.

They’re a likeable club as well, so good on them.

  • 202 LooneyToon41 // Aug 15, 2012 at 3:35 PM

@195 Jack. As Jack has just posted, the http://www.nufc.com homepage has been UPDATED to state that personal terms have been agreed. That wasn’t on their when Oldmangeordie posted @116.

He’s a CM who can cover LB – I highly doubt he’ll sign as a LB.

The fact that Pardew mentioned Good’s ability to play LB makes me think that maybe we’ll just make do with Santon, Good, and (fingers crossed) Anita – and just make do without a specialist LB again.

  • 262 jayphoto // Aug 15, 2012 at 3:58 PM

I highly doubt we’re in for Muniain but Liverpool were heavily linked with him in June, I don’t think there is much gap between us and them in terms of desirability for players now! Bilbao are in a mess though….. i remember 4/5 years ago, id never dream we’d have Ben Arfa at newcastle such was his potential at Lyon yet here he plays! same with santon in that first season with inter! We have the future french captain in Yohan Cabaye, possibly one of the best strikers in europe in Papiss Cisse, and a future dutch number 1 in Krul! I think we’d be a great place for him to come and learn the game, probably aided by the fact that bilbao wont sell him to barca or madrid and no1 else in spain can afford him!
However….14m for him AND iraola?? Iraola is 30 something….. we’d only sign him if he were free!

Imo, our squad isn’t thin, we just need more quality depth in 3 areas. FB, CB and Striker.

And that’s the size of a squad challenging and competing in the CL.

Even if Anita is signed by tomorrow noon, I don’t expect him to feature against Spurs. Pardew and his staff will have been coordinating training throughout this week with Spurs in mind and we all know the importance AP puts on cohesion, organisation and every understanding their role for the team.

I know he isn’t a case like Santon, who AP was cautious in deploying because he needed and still does to a degree, to adapt his game, I think we’re buying Anita to be utilised as the extra cog in midfield doing precisely what he does for Ajax, but AP isn’t one to act in haste, even if Tiote and Cabaye are out.

    @IITianToon

    Well, never say never…

But there’s almost hate between them and anyway they don’t trust each other.

    So i would say no.

But there’s some reason to be optimistic:

1 Beny came to his “trial” last month, and he made some statements about the fact he like the french shirt.
This the good way to act if he want to have a chance again.

2 Deschamps want to win. Nothing else really matter to him and he’s one of the most cold minded coach in the world. If he think at any moment he really need Beny, he will push his pride aside and select him without hesitation.

3 We can’t say there’s alot of gifted player in France now, so…
If beny make excellent games with Newcastle, it will be difficult to do not pick him up.

But – putting my Newcastle bias to one side – Hatem hasn’t really performed for France. At least, he didn’t in any of the friendlies, or in the Euro2012.

Surely that just gives Deschamps yet another reason not to give him a chance. It’s not like the French public can still say he’s never been given a fair chance.

Completely off topic (in fact, nothing to even do with the toon or prem league for that matter) I see that Fabrice Muamba from Bolton has officialy retired from football now. I know they always said that it was unlikely he would play again, however, the ‘neutral’ in me kind of hoped to see some kind of ‘Roy of the Rovers’ comeback from him and he could carry on. Given everything he has gone through tho, he is lucky to be alive at all.

…you might be right, i would have scoffed at the possibility of 5th last year. However, Chelsea have gotten a lot better, I have a difficult time picturing the current squad to compete with manu, mancity, arsenal or chelsea for that fourth spot. Each of those 4 teams are deep at almost all positions.

  • 325 toonLYF // Aug 15, 2012 at 4:35 PM

i would be disappointed if we signed Toivenen and Pieters like. Don’t think Pieters is next level from Simmo, he is better, but is not a step up in the same way Debuchy would be…and Toivenen…naaah he’s too blonde, reminds me of smudger too much.

    @Turkish
I can very much see us giving him a punt towards the end of August if Debuchy isn’t happening. Putting Santon on the RB.
Cheaper as u say, younger, perhaps more solid defensivly, but he won’t be as creative going forward.
I think Cissokho is dead in the water concerning us.

  • 332 pawl250 // Aug 15, 2012 at 4:41 PM

    Luke 26 is spot on!

Williamson and Simpson are awful! We need 2 players in Debuchy and Douglas would be my choices so 12m? Anita has nearly been paid for by Best 4m and Foster 2.5m leaving! I know we added Good and Biri but that’s just development.

If we get Debuchy 7m sell Simpson for 2m and get Douglas 5m we are talking 10m for a brilliant squad! I mean seriously!

We would probably still have a smaller wage bill too with Guthrie and Smith costing roughly 100k a week!

Maybe not CL but certainly no argument on the quality we have added!

If next season we add a similar amount of quality I wouldn’t argue we could compete for CL!!

  • 333 pawl250 // Aug 15, 2012 at 4:45 PM

    I’d skip Pieters like!

He is way too injury prone! Just think I would rather put up the extra £1m for Debuchy!

If only I won the euro millions I would have put up the £1m myself!! Lol he would be a massive improvement to arguably the weakest part of our team!

  • 334 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Aug 15, 2012 at 4:45 PM

Pawl…I’ll agree that they would certainly improve the squad and the RB / CB positions. However, as I pointed out before and unfortunately the point imo cannot be skipped past, we did compete for a CL spot and missed out by a small margin. These players may bridge that margin, but let’s not assume we can or cannot compete with those players, as we already have.

  • 335 TurkishFan101 // Aug 15, 2012 at 4:45 PM

@Dannyo well about Cissokho Lyon president was quoted saying they received 2 offers one from la liga and other from BPL so I’m assuming it’d be us. He also said they are not in any kind of rush but he told he’s agent he prefers his first choice to be italy or england

  • 336 HullMag6 // Aug 15, 2012 at 4:46 PM

  • 337 toonLYF // Aug 15, 2012 at 4:47 PM

i know mate, personally i don’t think we’ve considered Pieters or Toivenen this window, just their names keep getting mentioned on here…they’re both more like mackem targets really, would be a step backwards when i don’t see a reason why we couldn’t attract names such as Remy/Cissokho/Debuchy etc

  • 338 pawl250 // Aug 15, 2012 at 4:48 PM

    Ibiza -

We had Williamson half a season! And we had the best defence in the league until STaylor was injured!

Simpson was included in that defence, but he still is awful! Debuchy would offer x10 the attacking ability and the same if not slighty more defence wise. I could live with that!

  • 339 Transfer Sage // Aug 15, 2012 at 4:49 PM

I think a pieters deal would take time.

A thorough medial would need to be done to see of his injuries were random, unlucky events or part of a problem which could not be corrected.

And most clubs above us and Chelsea have strengthened on paper but need to see how they adapt and perform on their team yet.

  • 340 Beattie25 // Aug 15, 2012 at 4:49 PM

  • 352 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Aug 15, 2012 at 5:02 PM

Pawl….I do believe I said they would improve what we had – that’s not in dispute.

Yes, Williamson played approximately half the season (incidentally more games than STaylor) and our defense record was better without him.

That was not my point though :)

With those two playing for the majority of our season, we did compete for a CL spot. We may not be able to again, but we also may be able to. I don’t see how one summer completely writes us off with them still in the team?

    Newcastle United (Last Season: 5th)

I was really pleased to see Newcastle have such a good campaign last year. I love going up there to watch them because there’s such a good atmosphere and it’s nice to see them being successful once again. At the start of the year I wrote them off completely. I didn’t think they’d be anywhere near the top four last year but when you look at their team more closely you think ‘you know what, they’ve got a team there’. People like Yohan Cabaye, Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba, Hatem Ben Arfa…they’re a strong team. I understand they’re now trying to sign Mathieu Debuchy, who was good for France at the Euros, and they could do with a right back. Perhaps they lack a little strength in depth but I was really impressed with them last season and I think they’ll be competing again this year.

Key man: Papiss Cisse. A lot will fall on him. If he can do what he did last year then they can have another good season. The big question for Newcastle is can he do it again or was there an element of luck in his sensational goal scoring form last season?

Jamie’s Judgement: I expect them to do well again and definitely be pushing into the top six and maybe challenge for a Champions League spot. Their goal-scoring was like a relay race with Demba Ba dominating the first half of the season and Cisse in the second half. If they can produce those performances again then who knows what might happen?

Knew there was a reason why I like Jamie. A decent enough report on the club and it’s chances imo.

Was he a good left back?

I never saw much of him before last year but from what I saw he looked like he lacked any defensive abilities, didn’t defend enough for a winger never mind a full back.

He got dragged off a couple times for not tracking back.

Maybe he just thought he was too good for everton, not sure.

If he is a decent defender as you say he could be worth a shout if still available, especially of he can play all up the left hand side .

  • 380 toonLYF // Aug 15, 2012 at 5:19 PM

if you think about it, full back, as a position is really underrated. Some say they’re just wingers who weren’t quite good enough, but to be fair it’s the only position on the pitch where the player is fully judged on both defending and attacking. Some would argue centre midfielders also are, but most teams have a a CM more suited to attacking and another for defensive duties. It is impossible for us to sign a full back that can do both to a high standard; as simply, there’s only a handful of players in the last 20 year (my footballing life) that have done it successfully. Ashley Cole, Phillip Lahm, Roberto Carlos etc. So i think some of you need to lower expectations a bit.

Leaves us to think its either Eric Pieters allot of potential especially at that age. Otherwise jem which carr is scouting specifically and they are trying to strike a deal for the unheard player?? Dono myself its happened allot for example with tiote and cabaye we hadn’t heard of them till the point they had proven themselves in BPL. Something suprising will happen I believe that couls be the same for CB position with it being, Sakho, Douglas oe even M’biwa although it seems less likely due to their president. Pawl..

just because I’m saying Newcastle arent CL quality yet doesnt mean that Ashley and Co. are making the wrong decision holding off on signing players.

According to The Plan, our goal is to make steady progress over 5 years. Year One: Avoid Regulation Year Two: Finish in the top half Year Three: Qualify for Europe

We accomplished Europe a whole year ahead of schedule. Champions League is not a goal for a another 2 years, although the team will obviously be aiming for it.

If Newcastle believes we can qualify for Europe again with Simpson and Williamson, then they won’t pursue other targets. It’s Cost/Long Term Benefit analysis.

Is there any news on loic Remy? He would be a great addition! Pace and knows where the net is, no need for Carroll to add to the mid tempo striking options

Toonking…Indeed. He also summed up the fools pretty well imo. He seems to have a decent balanced view on things. Must take after his mother ;)

Hey Niafron! ;) What do you think about Riviere who plays CB for Toulouse. Would he be a possible signing for us?

Have a Dutch twitter-friend, huge PSV fan. Asked him about Anita and he said he had a mediocre season two years ago, playing left back, but last season he was ON FIRE. Also said he would be a superb signing for us. EXCITED <3
