Alan Pardew On Danny Simpson Situation – We’ll Wait And See

10:52 am, Friday, August 17th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 45 Comments

With only two weeks left in this summer’s transfer window, we put out an article earlier today wondering what would happen with Danny Simpson, since he still hasn’t signed his new contract, which has been on the table for over a year now,  and he has only one year left on his current deal at Newcastle.

Danny Simpson – What to do?
Buddy Holly song – listen to it here

We’d be very surprised if Danny doesn’t start the game at right back for Newcastle tomorrow against Tottenham Hotspur, and add to the 112 appearances he has already made for the Magpies over the last three seasons.

And it will probably  depend on whether Newcastle can bring in Mathieu Debuchy over the next two weeks,  that will decide whether Danny stays on Tyneside, or is sold before September 1st rolls around.

Manager Alan Pardew has talked about Danny’s situation in the Evening Chronicle today:

“He has a good attitude. Things were not great for him.” “He only has one year left and the contract we offered him he did not think it was right.” “We have not had a bid which has been right for him, so he has stayed here.”

“He has to earn a contract with us – or with another Premier League club which he will get.” “So we will have to wait and see.” “His attitude, though, has been first-class.”

Both Reading and Fulham were interested in the player earlier this summer, but we don’t think Danny will be short of clubs coming in for him, if Debuchy does arrive at Newcastle, especially since the transfer fee is probably only around £2M.

We’d love to see Danny have a change of heart and stay on Tyneside, and sign his new contract, whether or not Mathieu Debuchy comes on board.

But it’s completely up to Danny, and we don’t think he’ll get too much more money at another club, and Newcastle are starting to go places too – and we have been rumored to have offered him £30K/week – which is not too bad at all.

I’d take one week of those wages anytime. :D

But as we said it’s now completely up to Danny boy.

Comments welcome.

  • 2 jesperfuglsang // Aug 17, 2012 at 10:59 AM

Rumors has it that before Lille pulled the plug on the Debuchy transfer Simmon was more or less an Reading player.

I don’t think he’ll sign a new deal and I think problem is we are having difficulties signing a new RB…so I don’t know if Simmo would be staying or not come September?

  • 3 Jail for Ashley // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:00 AM

I can see him getting sold regardless, somebody once posted that ‘we wont get rid until we get a replacement’ in our experience of Dastaardly and Mashley on the contrary we normally have to get rid before we get a replacement.

Stick ryan taylor right back tav as cover and get rid of simpson

  • 5 bambams // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:04 AM

I wonder if we don’t get a rb Pards will ask anita to play left back and shift Santoon to rb, maybe in January. This way they will get something for Simmo rather than letting him leave for nothing.

danny has a striking similarity to james tavernier in that photo anyhow its back up onto the roof for me as this means no more signings #AshleyOut

  • 10 dmac // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:06 AM

To me i personally feel a bit sorry for the lad, he is a die hard professional and is fully committed every time he walks out onto the pitch, he may not be the best but he is all we currently have (natural rb) and should recieve more support.

It always leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth when fans boo there own players. It has ruined the confidence of many a player. It happened with Viana and now its happening to simmo/obertan. It irritates me.

  • 11 WWYCD // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:06 AM

Raylor at RB over Simmo? Thought people wanted a upgrade

  • 12 jesperfuglsang // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:07 AM

If that’s the case I would be surprised if Simmo starts tomow…if he’s a goner I wouldn’t start him :)

It is just such a shame we are taken so long on our transfers with what looks like a busy first two weeks with a lot of games…but guess that’s the story of Newcastle!

  • 13 Beattie25 // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:07 AM

Got a feeling he won’t be here come 1st September.

Remember Joey Barton last season? He played the first and and then was moved on as soon as a decent offer came in.

Also Im surprised that more isn’t being made off the utter sustain with which Lille fans now hold Debuchy.

If there was ever going to be a transfer it’ll be now seen as they are growing to hate him and will likely be booed when playing at home.

Unhappy player, unhappy fans and stubborn chairmen on both sides.

    Ashley will win I think.

  • 14 ashwin say's // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:09 AM

if rock is religion, queen is god!!!!
if footballl is religion, nufc is god!!!

anyone who disagree will burn in hell!!!!

anyone who follows it say AMEN.

  • 15 Beattie25 // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:10 AM

    * sustain = distain

  • 16 jesperfuglsang // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:10 AM

Yo…neither Raylor nor Perch are Rb’s – they can fill in if needed, but they are not RB’s :)…but that is probably what you meant anyway?

If we are going to play a passing game in an attacking formation ala 4-3-3, we need ballplaying defenders and forward thinking fullbacks – think we are short of both :)

  • 17 Beattie25 // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:11 AM

I dislike Simmo as a footballer as much as the next fan but anybody who says he shouldn’t start tomorrow is an idiot.

  • 18 Rotonda heights // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:12 AM

We’ve heard all the pros (goal line clearances) and mainly cons for Simpson and unlike Ed I would not love him to have a change of heart and stay.

Gutted he didn’t move on to Reading as that would have meant we had a better attacking and technically better footballing player coming in. Not necessarily Debuchy but an upgrade.

Now it looks like we are stuck with Simmo as first choice and if anything happens to Saylor we are back to Willo and Simmo starting. Good lads but not next level lads. It’s amazing they are both playing in the EPL, but have no discernible footballing skills.

  • 19 jesperfuglsang // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:13 AM

Dmac…don’t feel sorry for Simmo he was offered a new contract, but it wasn’t right for him. That’s football mate :)

  • 20 geordie157 // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Ashwin, looks like i’m going to burn then, Led Zep over Queen for me!

  • 21 WWYCD // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Haha yeah mate ;) tbh I would say Perch is best at CDM but Raylor I dont think he has a best position hes pretty average everywhere he plays imo

Not that I dont like him but footballing quality wise other than freekicks he doesnt have much going for him

  • 22 dmac // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:14 AM

I remember the days when a football supporter did exactly that and supported their team.

  • 23 Jail for Ashley // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Simmo should definitely start tomorrow,we could start an international French dude but I don’t believe he’s in the building yet and certainly isn’t over the line.

  • 24 Munster Mag // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:16 AM

I’d far prefer to keep him , and maybe get Debucky later on – assuming Debuchy can defend. Our defence has the potential to be a major weak point, an the good thing about Danny is that whilst he is very limited on the ball/going forward he is a good defensive right full back.
Assuming our two strikers are ok my team:
Obertan ( if Bale fit, otherwise Ben Arfa )

    …in a 4-4-2

    Prediction 1-1

  • 25 BOOM BOOM THE 1ST // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:16 AM

  • 26 Transfer Sage // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:17 AM

Agree on debuchy. I think Ashley was hoping for something like that to happen, or for the the player to hand in a transfe request.

Just biding his time waiting for the dice to roll on his favour than he will snap him up. Love him or hate him he is a shrewd businessman.

  • 27 geordie157 // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:18 AM

Hard to predict our starting 11 for tomorrow.

If Ben Arfa isn’t starting, should we go with Obertan on the right, or move Jonas to the right with Marv on the left.

So effectively a 4-5-1, with Krul, Simpson, Saylor, Colo, Santon, Jonas, Gosling, Tiote, Anita, Marv, Cisse.

  • 28 Londtoon // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:18 AM

I actually completely disagree. Statistically simpson was one of the best right backs and tends not to make many mistakes.

He is not the best going forward but if he can get the ball to ben arfa/obie and can provide one two passes as support and what’s the problem.

If anything I think he needs a contract. But I agree he shouldn’t be given a contract for more than we value him at as I trust the clubs judgement in recent times

  • 29 Transfer Sage // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:21 AM

I know I will be slated for this bit here goes.

Very patchy information so I must stress it is highly unlikely to happen, by no means a certainty.

But Newcastle have been offered a player who would walk into the first team, he is a class above. Apparently he is from a team that need to sell badly due to a severe reduction in bank loans available. It’s a European country so I guess Spain or Italy as they are hard up.

Anyway the fee they want is excellent value but Newcastle want to try and get him for less, so it all depends if another club beats us to him.

Again, I don’t want hassle for this, just passing on as much as I know. If I hear more I will tell but don’t hold your breath.

  • 30 Transfer Sage // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:23 AM

Problem wih statistics is that they ones used to say he was the best right back didn’t include every statistic you need to judge.

Yes he was the best with those statistics but others which weren’t included, like standing of players etc wasn’t.

He is a solid prem right back I think, no more no less. Could do much worse and do better.

  • 31 bambams // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:25 AM

hope you have something there fella, it’s a mierable day weather wise so need cheering up – ‘hopefully’

  • 32 ToonAndy // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:27 AM

For the people who believe we’ll only be playing two of Cabaye, Tiote and Anita at any one time, I have to disagree… I believe this is our strongest team at present…

Either that or have Jonas left back and move santon over to the right…

That team has the perfect mixture of attack and defence…

  • 33 Robby Bobson // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:30 AM

i reckon it could be jonas left ans santon right…..with marv and obertan on the wings of a front three.

have my doubts about 2maro we didnt finish the season very good so just hope were at it 2maro or else we will get right turned over with a bang, nice to get a good start.

  • 38 jesperfuglsang // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:49 AM

ToonAndy…that may well be our strongest side, but last season Tiote missed almost half of our games and Cabaye went missing for a period of time; we need more options in midfield, so don’t count on seen a midfield of Tiote, Cabaye and Anita on all ocations :)

  • 39 Kyo // Aug 17, 2012 at 11:54 AM

ToonAndy, I think you’re forgetting about a certain Demba Ba in your lineup.

Simpson Shouldnt start tomorrow, Perchinho should. There you go i’m an idiot according to the oracle that is Beattie.

  • 42 toonhorse // Aug 17, 2012 at 12:58 PM

Danny has always give a shit load 4 us, made a few mistakes but who hasnt, personally hope he signs but wish him well if hes off.
Think this season a good few of the kids are gonna shine wi the extra games we got comin up. would love to see a few more cameo’s from young AC, good and streete to come good also, bigi, albeid n amil to shine.

well excited about the season kickin off and what it will bring. hopefully kickin off last will let us know how many we need to put past the yids to go top lol :)

  • 43 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 17, 2012 at 1:38 PM

Get rid of him immediately. He’s a mercenary. He doesn’t deserve £30k a week. He’s a poor player. Even if we don’t sign Debuchy, we can play Gutierrez at left back and put Santon on the right. We have Ryan Taylor and James Perch as back up who are miles better than Simpson.

I’d go with Santon at right back and Gutierrez at left back tomorrow. If not, I’d start Raylor at right-back. He’s a good defender and he also offers creativity. He’s also a goal threat.

We’d be mad to start Simpson ahead of Raylor and Perch.

  • 44 Shearer1978 // Aug 17, 2012 at 2:47 PM

I appreciate everything he’s done for us, but I think in all fairness its time for him to move on, we can jiggle about what we have until a replacement comes in but sell him for £2m, add that £2m to the money we were prepared to pay for Debuchy and fingers crossed

  • 45 Graeme // Aug 18, 2012 at 11:18 AM

    Toonandy @ 32

Spot on mate, thats exactly the right place for Anita – alongside Tiote which frees up Cabaye for a much more creative role.

You can interchange Cisse and Ba at any time, they will both thrive in that formation. Bring it on lol
