Danny Simpson has still not signed his new contract, and Alan Pardew made it clear earlier this year, and more than once, that if Danny didn’t sign in the summer, he would be sold, and would not be allowed to run down his contract through the coming season, and become a free agent next summer, when Newcastle would get nothing for him.
Danny Simpson – in action against West Brom last season
Danny had had a good career in the three seasons he’s been at the club, and they have been seasons that Newcastle have come back to the big time in terrific style, after we were relegated in May of 2009, and Danny has been a regular during that time at right back.
Vurnon Anita was signed yesterday, and he can play in either full-back position, but both he and Alan Pardew said that the Dutch International will be used mainly in midfield, and that seems a bit of a surprise to us, because if anything our weakness in the side is at full-back.
We don’t know if Newcastle can get Mathieu Debuchy through the door before September 1st, but if the French International does arrives, it’s almost a certainty that Danny Simpson will be sold.
But Newcastle need to bring in Mathieu, or another right back – fairly soon, and not leave it too late, because it could then be difficult to sell Danny.
If Newcastle don’t bring in another right back this summer, it seems that Simpson will be kept at Newcastle, since we hardly have enough cover for him with all the games the team needs to play if we get through to the group stages of the Europa League, and of course Simpson can play anywhere across the back four.
We suppose he could sign a new contract and that would solve the problem, but if he doesn’t Newcastle would still have a chance of getting a fee for him in January, but it will be less than they could get for him this summer.
But if Newcastle want to sell Danny in January, the club would need to bring in another right back then, which would not be easy.
But it will be interesting to see what Newcastle do in the two weeks of the transfer window remaining, before it slams shut on Friday, August 31st, and don’t be surprised if Danny is still at the club the next day.
