What Are Newcastle Going To Do With Danny Simpson?

9:07 am, Friday, August 17th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 45 Comments

Danny Simpson has still not signed his new contract,  and Alan Pardew made it clear earlier this year, and more than once, that if Danny didn’t sign in the summer, he would be sold, and would not be allowed to run down his contract through the coming season, and become a free agent next summer, when Newcastle would get nothing for him.

Danny Simpson – in action against West Brom last season

Danny had had a good career in the three seasons he’s been at the club, and they have been seasons that Newcastle have come back to the big time in terrific style, after we were relegated in May of 2009, and Danny has been a regular during that time at right back.

Vurnon Anita was signed yesterday, and he can play in either full-back position,  but both he and Alan Pardew said that the Dutch International will be used mainly in midfield, and that seems a bit of a surprise to us, because if anything our weakness in the side is at full-back.

We don’t know if Newcastle can get Mathieu Debuchy through the door before September 1st, but if the French International does arrives, it’s almost a certainty that Danny Simpson will be sold.

But Newcastle need to bring in Mathieu, or another right back – fairly soon, and not leave it too late, because it could then be difficult to sell Danny.

If Newcastle don’t bring in another right back this summer, it seems that Simpson will be kept at Newcastle, since we hardly have enough cover for him with all the games the team needs to play if we get through to the group stages of the Europa League, and of course Simpson can play anywhere across the back four.

We suppose he could sign a new contract and that would solve the problem, but if he doesn’t Newcastle would still have a chance of  getting a fee for him in January, but it will be less than they could get for him this summer.

But if  Newcastle want to sell Danny in January, the club would need to bring in another right back then, which would not be easy.

But it will be interesting to see what Newcastle do in the two weeks of the transfer window remaining, before it slams shut on Friday, August 31st, and don’t be surprised if Danny is still at the club the next day.

What do you think?

Let his contract run down, he’ll have to play his socks off to look good to other clubs.

Then sell him in January if a FB is available.

  • 2 davybtoon // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:11 AM

Mbwia should b the player sign really can play anywhere across the back 4

  • 3 Toonboy_84 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:12 AM

I’d like to see him stay. A lot of guys on here don’t rate him, but we could do much worse. Still want to see another fb through the door though.

  • 4 davybtoon // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:12 AM

As it stands tavernier n santon my fullbacks

  • 5 yorkshireToon // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:12 AM

Pardew actually said that he may leave, sign a new contract or run down his original contract. It doesn’t make sense that Ashley would let him do that though does it?

  • 6 Teamstoof // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:16 AM

I don´t understand why everone want us to sell Simpson? He has been good to us. And even if we sign Debuche, we need a cover for that spot.. so please get in another FB and keep Simpson

  • 7 Beattie25 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:17 AM

What Are Newcastle Going To Do With Danny Simpson?

Take him to the scene of the wicker man and sacrifice him to the pagan god of RB’s

  • 8 Beattie25 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:18 AM

What Are Newcastle Going To Do With Danny Simpson?

Melt him down and try to get as much as they can for him at cash for gold.

  • 9 Beattie25 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:19 AM

What Are Newcastle Going To Do With Danny Simpson?

Create a clone army of Simmos that can’t fight for shit but are statistically the best army in the world.

  • 10 Nufc-83 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:20 AM

Sell him and give Tav the chance he cant be any worse and from what i have seen is much better. Perch, raylor, and santon can all cover that spot aswell so if we didnt get any one in i dont think we would be much worse off than we are now. Focus on signing somebody in Jan if that was the case.

  • 11 Nufc-83 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:21 AM

Beattie is that a racist joke melt him down for Gold?

  • 12 Beattie25 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:21 AM

Ha just kidding mate it obv wasn’t.

  • 14 BigKirky // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:23 AM

Monday – Debuchy, no futher. Tuesday – Debuchy, no further. Wednesday, no further. Thursday – Debuchy, no further. Friday – Debuchy, no further. Saturday – Debuchy, no further. Sunday – Debuchy, no further… And repeat.

Wish it would hurry up and be completed. A centre back, Debuchy and i am very happy. Add a striker to that, we are a fair bit stronger than last year. May only just end up being Anita though.

  • 15 Beattie25 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:24 AM

Seeing as he is of Afro-British origins and not actually made of good I would say that your question Borders on retardedness.

  • 16 Beattie25 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:24 AM

    * good = gold

  • 17 Nufc-83 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:25 AM

Bigkirky i doubt we are concentrating all our efforts on Debuchy now after the latest bid got rejected. probably trying to approach other targets.

  • 18 ForeverToon // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:25 AM

Danny has performed reasonably well over the last 3 seasons, and I do not understand the clamour for us to get rid of him. What he needs is the support of management and supporters. Every player needs to feel wanted. Am sure same applies to Danny.

  • 19 Nufc-83 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:25 AM

  • 21 CapColo // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:28 AM

What a team!!! Anyone that disagrees with Jonas at FB…..speak to Maradona!

  • 22 newcben // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:28 AM

I really feel we need more than just one signing, we need at least two! wing back and a CB….if Collo gets injured we are in a world of trouble captain slow (willo) and mr injury prone (STaylor). Every game would be an even greater emotional roller coaster.
I think if we really aren’t getting anyone else in then I’d go for.

    At the back.

  • 23 putra_hayzad // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:29 AM

simpson is one of the key player last season and he play almost all the game , so he just want more money doesn’t mean we have to hate him give him a time maybe on this new season he can play much better and want to stay with us . But truth we need new df

  • 24 newcben // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:30 AM

Speak to Marandona….the worst manager of all time made a team full of superstars look bang average, he was wither high or drunk. Jonas being in the top 5 best players for Arg and he doesn’t even consider Zanetti who won the CL with Inter (as their captain) that year.

Jonas one day will slide back to full back but he needs a lot more practice, would leave us very exposed.

  • 25 BigKirky // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:30 AM

I’d keep Simpson but use him as second choice to keep the squad strong, but he probably doesn’t want to be sub. He is a decent right back, he just doesn’t have those extra qualities needed to be a top quality full back and that’s just unfortunate for him.

  • 26 davybtoon // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:33 AM

Gonna stand by toivonen n Douglas in b4 window shuts jus my opinion like

  • 27 BigKirky // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:34 AM

It was more all the news that of Debuchy, no further rather than what the club is doing. As we know Mike doesn’t mess around with his dealing so I doubt we’ll meet their asking price as it’s our own valuation that we’ll go to. Really hope it comes off though. He’d be good for the team on and off the pitch it seems.

  • 28 HullMag6 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:34 AM

Baines – maybe, Johnson & Carroll – if the right deals can be done. 3 good English players, but if some cheaper gems can be found get them over the line. Whatever happens HWTL.

ps Sell simmo, we have plenty of capable cover.

  • 29 charlee71 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:35 AM

Can you please refrain from using certain words please. I read this blog regular and have made up my mind that you are killing it. Your choice of words is disgraceful. I work with people who have disabilities and mental health issues and quite frankly you disgust me. And yes, I am a woman. . .
Back to football, I dont think we should get rid of Danny, as we need him. We wont get Debeauty as they Will not sell to us. Time to move on. We have no idea who Carr has on his radar, but secretly hope it is Remy

  • 30 CapColo // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:39 AM

newcben – I some what agree….it was more in jest! however, with our large number of young midfeilders coming in and lack of numbers defensively – NOW is the time!
Also agree with #22. If SAylor and Colo are out, does that mean Willo and Perch/Good ….Vs RVP and Rooney! Ouch. Loving some of these new midfielders but we need, at the very least, an experienced CB within the next two weeks!

  • 31 BigKirky // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:39 AM

I don’t want to highlight his problem areas too much,as on the whole he’s been a good servant to Newcastle to the best of his ability, but if Simpson does go, then so will a high number of possession turnovers from all the lost high balls he plays and the, lets face it, very poor crossing.

  • 32 cyprus // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:40 AM

Has anybody out there watched Anita excepting youtube?
What does he mean he wants to be a plymaker? Is he ball-winner ‘Makelele-style’? Is he a creative midfielder who can spread the game? Will this guy be a creative defender -flying winger like Cole used to be? Thanks to anyone who responds and knows what he’s talking about. Otherwise, we’ll soon find out.

  • 33 GeordieToon89 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:41 AM

I think we’ll sign Douglas next weekend wouldnt be suprised if everythings already agreed just waiting for him to receive his citzenship… Got a feeling deadline day might be a busy day for us making bids we know we be rejected just so we the fans think weve tried to get the players “over the line” … We need at the very very least another 2 first teamers to come in, atleast a centre half and a striker.. Then if we can we need a full back

  • 34 Toon73 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:43 AM

I’m sure Simpson’s time is running down on extending his contract. It’s gone on for too long, I think he will be sold. Pieters , Toivonen IN next week and Douglas on the final day of the window.. :)

  • 35 GeordieToon89 // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:44 AM

Why are people even mentioning Baines? We will not get him thats a fact.. Hes atleast £10million, if we wont pay £7million for a class 27 year old right back we certainly wont pay atleast £10million for a 27 year old left back :s

  • 36 Tommyy // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:45 AM

Charlee – I’ve noticed that you have brought gender into your last two posts. That should have no bearing on anyone’s opinion or reaction to what you say, say why do you make it a point?
I’m certain we all read Beatties comments in jest, and anyone who takes them personally or even seriously is a fool. To accuse someone of killing this entire site is an extreme over reaction to say the very least.

  • 37 faustino // Aug 17, 2012 at 9:50 AM

Woah there Charlee71, I’m a writer and your man there is well within his rights to use ‘retarded’ as a word without causing offense.

The word has several definitions and as a result uses. If it’s employed as a personal insult fair enough, it’s out of order. But as a descriptive word used in lieu of non-personal description, it’s valid I’m afraid.

As you can see from the Oxford dictionary, the most reliable source you can get, disability isn’t even it’s primary usage. So as we say up north, ‘wind your neck in’.

  • 38 charlee71 // Aug 17, 2012 at 10:02 AM

Started off something here. We dont like the use of the word “retarded ” for a start. Its degrading. And as for using my gender, its a way to bring in a different view of things. Im not here to cause a rift, just put my point across. I hope I can contribute as much as anyone and still have an opinion. As you are aware, us wimmen are still treated like 2nd class citizens where football is concerned!

  • 39 DaveD1000 // Aug 17, 2012 at 10:04 AM

I’ve followed Danny on twatter for quite a while. As he consistently says…….he loves it at the Toon but there is no contract to sign. No offer on the table. Nada. He is no Ashley Cole admittedly but he has improved consistently over the last few seasons, always puts a shift in and works well with Krul. If he leaves…thanks and good luck but while he is wearing the shirt IMHO he deserves a bit of support.

  • 40 Tommyy // Aug 17, 2012 at 10:19 AM

Very much a generalisation there, there have been women on this site many times before and have always been treated and responded to the same way as anyone else.
Who is ‘we’ ? Retard is a degrading word if used as a direct or personal insult, If it’s used in humour (as clearly has been) then there should be no issue. If he was using it as a personal insult i’d agree with you but that’s not the case.
To football… Beat Spurs and we’ll win the league – no mistake.

  • 41 sholasupporter // Aug 17, 2012 at 10:20 AM

DaveD if we are to progress we need people that put in more than a “shift”. If I played for the toon I would give 110% but I am not good enough! Agree with newcben, raylor would get in above simpson everytime, he offers so much more going forward (crossing, deadballs and throws)and is equally as competent defensively. Still would prefer to try Santon there and get in a LB though. Need a much better balance this season as last season all productive attacks came from the right

  • 42 Burni // Aug 17, 2012 at 10:25 AM

Such a shame this predicament. I really rate simmo. He always gives his all and was responsible for keeping Newcastle either ahead or level in some very important games over the years. Yeah his crossing is awful and occasionally U want him to get tighter to someone but I personally would love it if he stayed I really would. He is a very good player. And he is better than championship material as some say. Such a shame

  • 43 DaveD1000 // Aug 17, 2012 at 10:32 AM

I dont disagree with you Sholasupporter (Big Shols also has had a fair bit of stick) I rate Raylor about the same as Simmo defensively but way above going forward. Pards tried Simmo in different position during pre-season so maybe he has something in mind.

we must keep danny boy. he is a good player. remember plz he played for us cool. i thing he is not a lucky man. he played well but nobody dont see this player. i think he is better than debuchy for us cause we need a player who play for us on defence we are weak on back so debuchy come forward to much i think he is a Middle player not a RB player BUT danny boy is a RB he is better one if he played for another team like Liverpool.Chelsea or Manchester he will call up to England National team but he play for us and Roy Hodgson dont see he.
