It was terrific to finally get Vurnon Anita on Tyneside, and he certainly looks a great acquisition and good value in the transfer market at just £6.6M, but some of us are now wondering whether Newcastle can bring in one or two more players before September 1st rolls around, which is in two weeks time.
Mathieu Debuchy – Lille have decision to make
Alan has talked today about the opportunities that may arise towards the end of this transfer window, and that’s because that’s when push comes to shove and clubs are forced to make decisions in the transfer window before it ends, and why most deals are done in late August.
Newcastle still have some targets they’d like to sign, but have been unable to agree a fee for them with their clubs, but that may change late in August as clubs review the offers they have had for their players, and possibly decide to accept them.
This is what Alan told the local press today:
“I think there’s a possibility of one more because I always think towards the end of the window, opportunities arise and something might just fall our way which is right for us.”
“Players, agents and clubs are quite rightly holding on, holding on and holding on, but at some point clubs have to make decisions, because they need money or the finance or they need to move the player on.”
“Maybe the player’s demands come down and then that’s a good opportunity, not just for us, but for the whole of the Premier League.” “A lot of us have been sitting on our hands a little bit waiting for that opportunity to arise.”
“Probably our best business is keeping the ones we’ve got.”
What Alan says there applies to at least two of Newcastle’s targets this summer – Mathieu Debuchy and Andy Carroll.
Lille will have a decisison to make over the next couple of weeks on whether they want to keep an unhappy player in Mathieu Debuchy in their ranks, especially since the French International has been a model professional for the French club and played in their first team since back in 2004.
And it’s the same with Andy Carroll, because are Liverpool really going to keep Carroll at the club, if manager Brendan Rodgers doesn’t see the Geordie striker as part of his future plans?
And we don’t know if Newcastle are really interested in 25 year-old Marseilles striker Loic Remy, they used to be, and his contract runs out next summer, and if he is not moved on before September, his price will go down, as the end of his contract approaches, and he becomes a free agent next summer.
Remy is another player Newcastle could possibly bring in before September, but that would be a surprise if it happens – but a nice surprise.
