Newcastle somehow did what was necessary against Tottenham at St. James’ Park this afternoon, to get their first win of the season against a very good looking Spurs side, and it was a fantastic goal from Demba Ba after 53 minutes, his first since February, and a wonderful piece of sublime skill from Ben Arfa, who was brought down in the penalty area after 80 minutes, as he went past two players, and he rifled home the penalty in great style, sending Freidel the wrong way – that did the trick for Newcastle.
This was a very hard earned win by the Magpies but it looked like Newcastle were second best in the first half, with Spurs looking the better side and also having most of the possession as both Defoe and Bale hit the woodwork.
Then after 55 minutes a simply fantastic goal from Demba Ba, who took the ball down from a Danny Simpson cross, and he turned and simply rifled the ball into the back of the net with his right foot – a fantastic first goal of the season from Ba – what a player.
And his first goal in 15 matches since early February but he still has 17 goals in 37 appearances for Newcastle.
But after 76 minutes Tottenham equalized and it was sloppy goal to concede by Newcastle. Lennon clipped the ball into the box to the far post, and Tim Krul just about kept Davide Santon’s header out, what was Santon doing?
But Defoe then followed through and put the ball into the back of the net, and the scores were level at 1-1 after 76 minutes.
Ben Arfa – after scoring the winner – what a player
But only a few minutes later it was Ben Arfa out on the left wing, who cut in and moved between two Spurs defenders showing tremendous skill, and he was brought down in the box – a stone cold penalty.
And Ben Arfa took the penalty – with his left foot of course – and sent Friedel the wrong way and this time Newcastle were able to hang on for what was a great victory for the lads, and a decent performance.
Newcastle again showed this afternoon that they never give up, even when they were outplayed as they were in the first half today.
Bottom line – a terrific start to the season and Vurnon Anita made his debut as he came on for Yohan Cabaye in the second half, and Yohan is still short of match fitness.
We’ll have a full match report out soon.
