Ben Arfa Starts – Coloccini Out – Anita On Bench

Hatem Ben Arfa is the surprise selection for the Newcastle team today against Spurs at St. James’ Park, as we had been led to believe he would’t be ready for the game today or on Thursday in Athens, but captain Coloccini hadn’t made it and is ruled out with a slight thigh strain.

That’s good news about Ben Arfa for Newcastle fans,  and we have to think he is not only fit but has been impressive in training too.

But Coloccini is not even on the bench, so that’s another surprise, and James Perch comes in to partner Steven Taylor at the back, which is surprising since Mike Williamson is on the bench.

Mike may be paying for a poor game he put in last Saturday at Cardiff City, but some more good news is that both Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba are fit and start up front in a 4-4 2 formation.

And Yohan Cabaye also starts, so this is almost the best team Newcastle can put out today, apart from Colo, so maybe some mind games were being played by Alan Pardew leading up to the game.

The bench is very strong –  Steve Harper, Ryan Taylor, Mike Williamson, Vurnon Anita, Dan Gosling, Gabriel Obertan and Shola Ameobi – and it does look like Steve Harper is back as number two goalkeeper to Tim Krul.

Jonas is the captain today.

Teams:

Newcastle United (4-4-2): Tim Krul; Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor, James Perch, Davide Santon; Hatem Ben Arfa, Cheick Tiote, Yohan Cabaye, Jonas Gutierrez (c); Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Steve Harper, Ryan Taylor, Mike Williamson, Vurnon Anita, Dan Gosling, Gabriel Obertan, Shola Ameobi

Tottenham Hotspur: (4-2-3-1): Brad Friedel; Benoit Assou-Ekotto, William Gallas, Younes Kaboul, Kyle Walker; Jake Livermore, Sandro; Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Aaron Lennon; Jermain Defoe
Substitutes: Carlo Cudicini, Kyle Naughton, Jan Vertonghen, Jermaine Jenas, Andros Townsend, Rafael van der Vaart, Harry Kane,

Instead of focusing on who isn’t there can we focus on the fact that HBA is playing, as is Cabaye and Tiote as well as Cisse and Ba.

More than enough quality to come out with a positive result

Let’s just hope Perch’s form carries over from last season to today. He must be doing something right in training to warrant selection over Williamson so I’ll trust Pard’s judgement.

You must be a sad pathetic loser with literally no originality that you feel the need to steal my name. It is flattering for me, but an incredibly poor reflection on you.

I assume pards is saving some players for europa. Perch might be a good choice seeing as spurs have no height up top. Plus he’s decentbon the floor. I remember against wba away he was nearly unplayable

    Bonjour messieurs.

    Ahah!

Beny not fit! I’m in love with Pard!

    There’s two possible explainations:

    1) Pard is a trickster who tried to swindle the spurs.

    2) Beny wasn’t injured. Rather was he a bit lazy in training and Pard told him he would not play to boost him.

Marv being saved for Europe as is Colo.
Perchino must have played CB a lot better in training than he did at Norwich to get the start there.

    Love Pards mind games 🙂

I guess perch is more similar to colo than Willo, he’s decent with the ball at his feet and much more composed.

No idea where Marveaux is because I thought e wold eat out Gosling for a spot on the sub’s bench. Oh well. The big thing is where did all of these fit players come from? Cabaye, Tiote, HBA, Ba, Cisse? I think Pard’s been playing some mind games with us. And Perch must have impressed Pards and Carver is training to be ahead of Willo.

Beattie, Amalfitano is not going to be a big player for us this year. Surprised re Marveaux but Pardew loves Guti and you’ll see more of Guti than Marveaux this season.
