    Ben Arfa
    Guttierez
    Ba
    Perch

    for me.

  • 2 Beattie25 // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:47 PM

Ben Arfa had instances of brillaince but Perch was brillliant throughout.

Man of the match for me!

  • 3 Gateshead-Mag // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:47 PM

    shay

    you get interviews on here??

  • 4 Dannyo // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:48 PM

Ben Arfa was immense, but so was Tiote.

  • 5 Sambo from belgium // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:48 PM

Perch was caught sometimes by bale. For me it was Jonas. Did everything well, defending attacking and captaining

  • 6 Kyo // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:48 PM

Ben Arfa clearly. Even in the dire first half they couldn’t handle him.

  • 7 MagpiesFlyHigh // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:50 PM

    Pardew the slapper !!

  • 8 colwell // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:50 PM

    @ Niafron

There is a pic of Peiters on twitter, the NUFC fans page posted it.

  • 9 dmac // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:50 PM

My star players were Santon, Perch, Jonas and HBA. I voted Santon as he was excellent all match and i knew hba would win poll anyway ;)

The first time i think i will disagree with you Dannyo, i thought tiote gave the ball away ALOT his passing looked very suspect. At one point he hooved it in the air and they broke.

  • 10 WWYCD // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:51 PM

    Dannyo
Tiote? I thought he was possibly the worst player out there for us tbh

  • 11 shay Robson // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:51 PM

i just saw avp. but i saw a comment that ba was sulking in interview. i hope i did not miss pards

  • 12 nightfa11 // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:51 PM

HBA for me…he was all over the pitch..did a great job defensively..

  • 13 BelfastMagpie87 // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:51 PM

    Ben Arfa!!!!

  • 14 bollance // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:52 PM

Not pretty but massive result. Hba is a match winner.

  • 15 shay Robson // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:52 PM

who has the link to peiters info, pic, page ?

  • 16 BelfastMagpie87 // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:52 PM

Tiote looked well of the pace to me like..

Kept giving the ball away all game..

  • 17 Gateshead-Mag // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:53 PM

a few rusty players out there today which only bodes well as they will get sharper

agree with most on here thought perch and saylor were immense, simpson looked dodgy but improved into game, front 2 didnt work too well but dont think they really had much of the ball, on the ground anyway,

well done ba and H B A what do you say???

    roll on next week HWTL

  • 18 AMEOBI // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:53 PM

Erm overall, Tiote then ben arfa.. Then everyone

  • 19 shay Robson // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:54 PM

    alan is on now

  • 20 bollance // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:54 PM

    Anyone at game? Good atmosphere?

  • 21 WWYCD // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:54 PM

Kuqi has signed up with Hibs :D loved him for his brief time with us

  • 22 GeordieToon89 // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:54 PM

Looks like Erik Pieters is signing, he was at the game today instead of being at psv game

  • 23 boater // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:54 PM

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind Jonas Gutierrez was the MOTM by a country mile. Put out fires all game, ran the ball out when we under pressure, motivated team mates, and buddied Anita who looked a bit nervous on his debut – proper captain’s performance.

  • 24 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:54 PM

HBA was magic Ba’s magic touch was sick….goal out of nowhere thats the CLASS we require…..

todays game showed we require Debuchy him going forward will open up an entire different ball game….

We def need that CB though….

  • 25 shay Robson // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:54 PM

    pardew that is

  • 26 Dannyo // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:55 PM

    @WWYCD
    Completely disagree mate, check this:

Top aerialist: Cheick Tiote – 5/5
Top passer: Cheick Tiote – 67/81
    pic.twitter.com/gF7tLZvY

Cabaye had a shocker imo, completely invisible.

jesus they ask stupid questions. tough ask for hba to get his task this season ? what stupid woman

  • 31 WWYCD // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:55 PM

Pieters at St James looks pretty real to me

  • 32 Kunsel // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:55 PM

For me Santon was the best player defended well and attacked almost at will, & Gutierezz played like a captain today worked his socks off, then tiote, ben arfa & perchinho played in there and i didnt even notice for a second than it was the great brazilian himself as i seriously thought he was williamson lolz

  • 33 coatesy17 // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:56 PM

one thing i noticed, when obertan came on he sprinted about 75 yards to get back to try and win the ball, eager to impress i feel. HBA today was outstanding, could take it past players for fun today, but jonas my god how dare you leave him out the team in your best 11 the guy is a workaholic gotta love him.

  • 34 cyprus // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:57 PM

Voted for hba because he won it but overall play, jonas by a mile

  • 35 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:57 PM

I rate Debuchy over Pieters though :-/

  • 36 shay Robson // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:58 PM

    thanks ANita………

  • 37 ~Anita One Bites the Dust~ // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:58 PM

I wouldn’t read too much into it though.

Wasn’t Hazard here last season? :P

  • 38 gorgonzola ( former Pecorino former to gorgonzola) // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:58 PM

    coatesy17

“one thing i noticed, when obertan came on he sprinted about 75 yards to get back to try and win the ball,”

    I saw that too…

  • 39 WWYCD // Aug 18, 2012 at 7:59 PM

    Dannyo
Great stats but anytime he tried to play a ball forward it was a lump to to a Spurs player or a short pass without enough behind it so again it went to a Spurs player. Completed passes were 90% between him and Perch/Saylor

I agree Cabs was fairly pants too but he is well short on match fitness and he was forced to sit in front of the back four for half of his time on the pitch

  • 40 MikeTheToonFan // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:00 PM

mostly every player impressed me apart from Simpson and Obertan i can understand why Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse didnt play so well because of their ramadan. Yohan Cabaye wasnt at his best but that’s just because hes not match fit. Vurnon Anita looked good and so did Taylor, Perch, Santon, Tiote, Gutierrez and krul but Hatem Ben Arfa Was Just WOW!

  • 41 mattyNUFC // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:01 PM

is there honestly anyone else it could be?

HBA by a country mile…and i thought everyone did exceptional bar our first half CMs (cabs and tiote)

  • 42 lukes26 // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:01 PM

Simpson should now have quieted his critics with that display.

Bale switched sides again to avoid him, which is a massive compliment. He also had two excellent crosses into the box, one of which led to the opening goal.

    *aaaaaaaaaaaand Queue Simpson hate*

  • 43 colwell // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:01 PM

Looking forward to seeing more of Anita. He has got good pace about him something we needed.

  • 44 dembademba // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:01 PM

spurs played closer to their full potential than we did, and we won, good sign!!!

tiote is class, was 80% fit prob but class

cabaye wasnt fit but we carried him n won

anita bad first touch – lol, as if that matters- showed glimpses that he has got sooo much to offer

looks like we’ve got a full season of benny ! imagine that !!!!!

  • 45 Tommyy // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:01 PM

Bad news about Ameobi. Can never catch a break.
As long as we never play first half 442 again I’ll be happy. So much better 433 / 4231

  • 46 Dannyo // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:02 PM

Pieters are probs having a look at his fellow countrymen Anita and Krul maybe?
It’s not unlikely that he comes through the doors tho.

  • 47 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:04 PM

He’d be just here to watch Krul, Anita, Van Der Vaart etc. There is no way that we will sign Pieters ahead of Cissokho and Debuchy.

  • 48 NUFC FOR SALE // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:04 PM

    Game assessment.

    1. Ben Arfa best player on the pitch
    2. Perch was solid, looks a totally different player….but we still missed Colo
    3. Cabaye obviously not up to speed yet
    4. Cisse and Ba looked well off the pace and its not coincidence that Ramadan has just finished.
    5. Although we love Debuchy, I thought Simpson again was great and came up with some good last ditch tackles as usual.
    6. Anita looks like he could be a really good player but early days on that one.
    7. Why is it every season we think could be Sholas year he gets injured??????
    8. Would like to see Debuchy and Carroll still coming to the club.

  • 49 shay Robson // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:04 PM

we do needd a new striker. left back who is coming in ????? jonas is my motm

  • 50 craig_the_toon_fan // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:04 PM

    HBA fooking class

  • 51 GeordieToon89 // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:04 PM

Dannyo I was thinking that but surely he should be been watching the PSV game.. and come down here another time

  • 52 WWYCD // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:05 PM

    Dannyo
PSV had a game today pretty sure they wont be chuffed Pieters turned up to ours rather than theres haha

  • 53 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:06 PM

Debuchy and Remy for me. We can’t carry on with Simpson at the back, otherwise we’re going to lose points. Luckily he got away with it today.

Wanted to see Marveaux in action.

  • 54 WWYCD // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:06 PM

    Kets
Not sticking to ur word then? Stunned I am

  • 55 GeordieToon89 // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:07 PM

Pieters will be available for around £4million which leaves more money in the pot to sign someone like Remy.. makes sense to me

  • 56 Dannyo // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:07 PM

    @WWYCD
Ye, but why the hell was that? Why was Cabaye sitting infront of the back 4 like that and not Tiote? Could it have been AP was well aware of his lack of fitness and thought he’d have less running to do if sat infront of the defense?

And yes, Tiote didn’t contribute much going forward, and often stopped the flow of play. He needs to sort that, cause he’s done that quite a few times last season. He keeps the ball in the team but does not contribute enough forward.
As for the worst player i thought he wasn’t.
Perfectly honest, Cabaye and Cisse did less. Not playing badly, just doing little or nothing.

  • 57 Beattie25 // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:07 PM

What do you reckon to this Peiters thing?

I know he is best mates with Krul so maybe he was here visiting?!

  • 58 matias // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:07 PM

Jonas for me. It amazes me he`s always being left out of the favoured starting line ups by the fans. I think he`s been propably the most valuable player of last 2 seasons for us.

Plenty of good individua efforts tonight though, even if the team didn´t gel all that well. Santon, Ba, Simpson, Tiote and obviously Ben Arfa stood out.

  • 59 GeordieToon89 // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:07 PM

    Simpson played well today AGAIN

  • 60 Thump // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:08 PM

Tough to pick. I’d probably say Saylor. At one point he headed the ball – on the ground – to Krul. Have to pick him just for that.

  • 61 lukes26 // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:09 PM

I’m going to say it: We don’t need any more CB cover, we have Perch.

The transformation of the man is unbelievable. He’s looking more and more like a gem of a steal at the 1 million, or whatever, that we purchased him for. Williamson is now fourth choice with Curtis Good possibly making that same claim.

  • 62 shay Robson // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:10 PM

maybe its peiters soon, yet he has to prooove his fitness………… maybe carroll on deadline day hahahahahahaah

  • 63 WWYCD // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:10 PM

    Dannyo
I would say nail on the head with that one Cabs wasent fit enough to continue where he normally plays Id guess but his quality was required on the pitch so Pards kept him on past when he should of come off

Cabs and Cisse didnt do as much as Tiote ur right but for me nothing they did put us in trouble whereas Tiotes constant lumping forward or poor passes did (think we are just gonna have to agree to disagree haha but stuff it we won end of the day)

  • 64 keeganjr // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:10 PM

    HBA AND PERCH

  • 65 shay Robson // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:11 PM

agreed i dont think we need a centre half

  • 66 SupaToonKid // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:11 PM

Great result! Not an amazing performance but winning and not playing well (and against a decent Spurs side) shows we’re ever improving.

  • 67 NUFC FOR SALE // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:11 PM

    Matias you’re right

Jonas every time has to be in the team.

I know he doesn’t create or score enough for a Premier league winger but his work rate and ball retention is 2nd to none.

Just read up on Ramadan. They can’t eat or drink from dawn until sunset, So Ba, Tiote and Cisse had nothing to eat or drink and had to play a Premier League match at 5.30pm…….I think they did exceptionally well then….if I don’t eat for 2 hours i get light headed

  • 68 shay Robson // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:11 PM

    is ramadam nearly over yet?

  • 69 SupaToonKid // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:13 PM

A lot of people are jumping up saying they don’t rate Pieters. The lad was our first choice for FB last season (ahead of Cissokho & Santon). The lad clearly is quality & versatile. Think he’d be a top signing.

  • 70 AussieToon // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:14 PM

Ben Arfa was the difference, plain and simple.

His magical play stole the show for me. Game breaker, and thats what he did today.

Just have to sit back and admire.

Pardew starting with the 442 was annoying, surely he knows the 433 is when we play at our best, particularly at home.

  • 71 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:15 PM

Jonas had a good game. His shooting was also good. It’ll take 3 major signings to finish ahead of Arsenal and Spurs in my opinion. At the moment, we’re about the 6th strongest in the league.

Liverpool have made some very bad signings and if they lose Agger, they’ll be looking at a mid-table finish this season.

  • 72 Magpies-till-d3ath // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:15 PM

Has to be Ben Arfa for sure, he was just making their defence look like right d**ks!

  • 73 naptoon // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:15 PM

hba is solid gold. his tracking back and defensive work are improving all the time.
few players looked rusty nd lacking match fitness but you got to play them to get them up to speed.
the full back four deserve a mention aswell. overall a great result and in the circumstances a good performance. bring on chelski. HWTL

  • 74 Dougiestyle // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:16 PM

I would say Ben Arfa was easily the best player on the pitch, his passing and work rate today was awesome. He also showed some excellent skill to win that penalty

But I did think it was a bit greedy him taking the penalty when he isn’t the primary penalty taker…good job he scored it!

  • 75 gazzaforever // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:16 PM

Just imagine the same match without hba . He s motm by far

  • 76 SupaToonKid // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:17 PM

I think we’ve got a massive chance of getting 4th. Liverpool won’t gel under Rodgers this season (they may be a problem though next year), Spurs need a CF or 2 also Arsenal have just sold Song & Giroud looks like he may need time to settle. I think we’ll battle it out for 3rd & 4th. Need a CB & LB & we’ll be sorted (FW can wait till Jan)

  • 77 GeordieoftheSouth // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:17 PM

as much as I like Simpson, he should not be our starting right back if we wont to progress…there’s no doubting he works his arse off and is a good defender but he lacks quality.

Would happily have Pieters left back and Santon at right back or Debuchy.

Ben Arfa was untouchable today, I hope no other clubs are looking at him!

  • 78 naptoon // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:18 PM

on benny taking the pen. good on him ba missed his last 2 so has cisse nd u cud tell there was no way he was gonna miss

  • 79 tiotal football // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:19 PM

Don’t know if anyone has seen or already mentioned this but Erik Pieters was at the game today…

    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=393098064079247&set=a.171395926249463.71547.171386076250448&type=1&theater

also – well played by the lads today

Santon is coming a great threat down the left hand side and is often more probing than Jonas is but they’re making a good partnership with Jonas’ defensive qualities

  • 80 waallsend-lad // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:43 PM

motm.. benny, just pipped jonas tho..such a hard worker… I watched match on ozzy sports channel foxtel 1 whohave a commentator whos a mag fan that also commented on PIETERS being @ the game n made a big point bout him not missing psv game?? for me probly prefer debuchy, but sure peiters would be very good option, seems way too much grief from his club haggling on…as far as a striker.. if we’re serious bout euro & top 4 then theres only one that fits the bill… REMY!! as much of a soft spot as i have for AC, i believe remy would be a way better fit for the team structure pards has set up and hopefully our push for the euro-proper 2013.

  • 81 waallsend-lad // Aug 18, 2012 at 8:54 PM

SHAY- the month of Ramadan finishes 18th august, followed by a week of celebration that revolves around food food n more food!! lets hope they get a few feasts in b4 chelski eh??

  • 82 TorqToon // Aug 18, 2012 at 9:03 PM

Just got back from the game and only one option for MOM an that’s Jonas!! He was incredible today! Worked his socks off and was everywhere!!! Brought in the midfield well and backed up simmo (who was dire!!) at every occasion!! A great result, a wonderful goal and show of love for Ba and a great day!! Now off to the gate for a few cheeky ones!! Have a good’un lads!

  • 83 mot7 // Aug 18, 2012 at 9:16 PM

i would love to see ben arfa played as a proper number 10 then build the team around him i dont want him defending around our own box its not natural to him i want him fresh and full of confidence picking up the ball in the oppositions half and running at them

  • 84 midlandgeordie // Aug 18, 2012 at 9:50 PM

Benny was the best player by far, sign of good things to come considering he wasn’t going to be fit for this match… I agree with mot7,build a team around him he would thrive in a role like that. Santon looked a bit dodgy in defence but he’s only young he’ll get better but he looked immense going forward. More of the same please!

  • 85 Munster Mag // Aug 18, 2012 at 10:12 PM

I missed some of the first half, but anyone who thinks Santon was MOM is quite simply, mad.

  • 86 Sazzer // Aug 18, 2012 at 10:27 PM

Perch or Jonas should play fullback when Colo is back. Simpson could and perhaps should have a second yellow card today. Not saying he played bad he actually look stronger except for few situations, but Perch impressed more and Jonas is better alternative as well.

Anita didn’t play that well the first 5 min and that got Spurs into the game but played well after that.

It got better in the second half with only Cisse up front. 3 central midfielder is the way to go.

Glad Ba scored and Ben-Arfa was the best player.

  • 87 gazzaforever // Aug 18, 2012 at 11:06 PM

Mot7 i totally agree with you mate, i want to see benny as a real cam without defensive task, he s definetely our key play and playmaker

  • 88 putra_hayzad // Aug 19, 2012 at 3:38 AM

Ben arfa and krul he made many great save
