Fulham Agree Fee For Newcastle Transfer Target

There is news today that the agent of Newcastle’s long term target, Brazilian center-back  Douglas,  is now in London and is discussing terms after it seems a fee was agreed between Fulham and FC Twente for the Brazilian center-back.

Douglas – Fulham have agreed fee with FC Twente for Brazilain

This could be another case of Newcastle missing out on a player, but with only one year left on his contract, the fee Fulham are reported to be willing to pay – €5.2M (about) – is hardly a good deal for somebody who could be available for nothing next summer.

Douglas is in the last year of his contract at the Dutch club, and it seems Newcastle have been after the 6’4″ Brazilian all year, but they may now miss out, and probably are not willing to pay the fee requested by FC Twente.

The report in Voetbal International is that Fulham have had a  £4M accepted by the Dutch club, and his agent is now currently in London,  discussing terms for his client with the Craven Cottage club.

It’s not clear if Newcastle have even offered a fee for the Brazilian but if they have, it seems that Fulham’s offer is a better one, which is why Fulham are now in pole position to sign the center-back.

We had a report out yesterday in which FC Twente Chairman Joop Munsterman confirmed that Newcastle and Fulham were two clubs who had expressed an interest in the player, but there had been no official bids received.

That seems to have changed today with Fulham’s bid being accepted,  and it could be another case of Newcastle being unwilling to bid any more than their own valuation of a player, which in this case seems to be around  £3M – not enough.

What do you think?

Who cares. I think we have someone better lined up. I think our transfer will drag till the last minute dateline day. And we might be in for something or someone special.

I’m telling you now that we were never after Douglas.

We might have enquirer about him but something about this doesn’t add up for me.

It’s either a link released to appease the fans or a smoke screen to our real target. Much like the Carroll and Debuchy links.

Head says first option, heart says second.

I’m no detective but something smells foul about all of these.

    Who agrees??

If we don’t get him it’s because we didn’t want him. I still think we will bring in 2 more players. Hopefully with no departures. If that is the case we can really kick on. 🙂 personally I am not worried if we miss out on Douglas. If he stays fit, Tayls is absolute class. No way would Douglas get ahead of him. That might be why he is off to fulham.

Totally agree with a few on here. If we wanted him we’d have got him. Don’t feel we’ve missed out at all.
Personally I’d have liked him here, but they know a lot more than me.

I’m not sure we were ever in for him. Is fulham the ‘bigger club’ who was interested in him??? Lol Did himself no favours with the toon faithful after that comment.

With all the publicity of Douglas – and with talk of Mbiwa all gone very quiet…I’ve put 2&2 together and come up with Yanga !!!!

Someone mentioned it a while back and it made a lot of sense, so those saying how can we lose a “top target” to the likes of Fulham, take note.

Football transfers are quite similar to an auction. You research the product (player), check valuations and set your own top price. When it comes to buying the product if someone else offers over your top valuation (Fulham) then you are best to walk away, not just keep increasing your bid.

Also, this may not even be true. It is possible his agent has flown to London is meeting Fulham and then meeting Newcastle officials.

As Beattie says, we may also not have been interested in the first place.

Great blog as usual. Well done Ed.

We are in for a big surprise by deadline day I think.
Any news from Carr ? ……….No
Any news from DL & co?………No
That’s because they do their business quietly without shouting about who we’re gonna sign.
I think we will bring in 2 more by deadline and one of them is going to WOW us all.
2-0 to the lads tomorrow night and I reckon we’ll turn Chelski over on Saturday as well

‘… expressed an interest…no official bids..’

I’m sure Newcastle express interest in lots of players, but like expressing an interest in houses it doesn’t necessarily equate to buying one.

Sounds like FC Twente are very keen on accepting any offer and are not particularly interested in finding out whether there are any other bids in the pipeline or is it they already know there will be no other bids.

I agree with you. If we wanted him, we would have signed him up by now. And if it is about the Dutch citizenship, then we would have signed a pre agreement with him.

He is not our primary target. Or maybe Tav has impressed so much, that Pards don’t think we need an other CB.

JToonJ….Since when has Pardew always spoken truth? A lot of what Pardew says is to control the fans and put off opposition, much like last week with HBA, Cabaye, Ba and Cisse all doubful for Spurs.

Jordi said he thinks, not he knows.

We have already have three experienced centre backs with a utility backup in Perch. What we need is an up and coming centre back more experienced than Good.

Im a toon fan. I love the toon and always believe we will win. I also think we are being run well now and if we keep going the way we have been this past 18 months we’ll be holding Pardew in a similar regard as SBR. I really reckon we could get top 4 and win something this year.

I trust the NUFC backroom to do the right thing and get this lad through the door UNLESS

We have Mbiwa lined up, he is going to be the best defender on the planet in 5-6 seasons time!

STaylor is made of glass, he never completes a full season. If we had signed a decent centre back this time last season, or even January we may have been playing CL qualifiers instead of EL!

Our defence is clearly not good enough, at times it was a shambles against Spurs, and well on another day we could have been 2-0 down at half time!

Get it sorted! Sahko, Mbiwa, Debuchy, Douglas, Cissokho we need atleast one of them!

If Dawson is 9m then Douglas at a measly 4m is a bargain! We can offer him EL football. The only downside is some players prefer a move to the capital.

Just hope we bring atleast one of them in!

    RB – Simpson, Tav
CB – Colo, STaylor, Perch, Williamson, Street,. Good
    LB – RTaylor, Santon

OK I know we can scramble them about i.e. Perch fullback or RTaylor RB but seriously the defence shown above is very average! and going into backups would almost certainly mean conceding goals!

Hopefully Street comes through and shows his talent!

Also for people that think a quality player cannot be signed for a measly 4m to 7m then let me remind you that Vincent Kompany was signed for 6m by Mark Hughes at Man City!

Arguably the best centre back in the world right now!

I seen the price tag and always questioned why we didnt take a chance on him!?

Douglas is regarded as the best player in the dutch league. The dutch league isn’t amazing but for 4m its worth a punt if you ask me!

Pieters is valued at 5m is he not? and he is a defender? he plays in the dutch league?

You can see where I am going with this. For me at the start of the window Douglas and Debuchy would have been my priorities.

Would seem to me that we may not sign anyone else by the end of the window. Shame really because 1 or 2 players could make that difference between midtable 8th-10th finish to pushing the EL/CL places again!

Bit of a shame to look at our midfield and attack full of quality then the defense seems to let this down . was banking on this guy signing along with debuchy would really make the difference would only cost around 11-12 million

    I agree with Beattie25!

As i stated yesterday i think we have only made 4 bids:

    1. Luuk de Jong
    2. Mathieu Debuchy
    3. Vurnon Anita
    4. Andy Carroll

All other “bids” have come from newspaper speculation or our club just registering an interest in a player.
I personally feel that the probable siginings of this transfer window will be:

    1. Mathieu Debuchy (long shot)
    2. Erik Pieters
    3. Andy Carroll

Expect alot of last minute transfer madness from us if these signings don’t happen.

I would have thought Douglas was an ideal fit , given that Pards was talking about the need for a big centre half who could score a goal or two? Again, its a case of how much we “want it” …….If we want the Champs league, are we willing to build our team with appropriate quality signings. we had all summer to get players ( one wonders why we had to wait till start of season to get Anits….?) so its either :

    1. We’re not going to buy more than 1 more player
    2. We’re involved in brinkmanship and negotiations with the likes of Lievpool

Lets hope its number 2 but there’s no reason to feel over optimistic, as we could surely have done more damage out there by now…?

First time writing on this blog. But it is a very nice blog ED. And what’s different (to the better) about this blog compared to others. People stand together. Thats great for a ll of us.

ok To answer some of the posts written here. We never know what the leadership will do about transfers. But we can only hope. But what we do know is. We managed to sign 4 players all looking good from what i’ve seen of them. And i believe we will be surpiced once of twice more during this transfer. But what we really would need were a CB for sure. so im guessing that will be one of the signing/s this window.

But the management might also find out whom we get for the next window. (last one we brought cissë) i believe the current situation Newcastle are in will prove very healthy in a couple of years. With positive balance. A stadium full every match. By the next window we also have a good point of where we stand. If we still are in the europe playing games. How we have done in PL. So i expect one more signing this window and we keeping all our stars.
And it to be a quite quiet window now and explode the next one. This is what i believe.

As Newcastle looks healthy and in my eyes never been so keen on keeping advancing. And ofc how we so far have done our deals(getting stars for a exceptionally price) By the end of the season i think we will finish at 4th. And do fairely good on the europa tour(quarter finals or maybe semi finals)

But in the end all we supporters can do are simply keep cheering for our wonderful team. And wish the best for them.

    Newcastle United now and forever!

Just another point of view but our weakness is FB not CB particularly going forward ,current guys offer little threat we need some genuine pace in this position, that said would be god to see santon on the right he may be better there.
Now Perchino has developed we have 4 more than decent CB s
2 fullbacks with pace for me
