It seems that Lille President Michel Seydoux may have to rethink his stance on whether he will allow right-back Mathieu Debuchy to leave the French club this summer, and it seems to depend on whether Lille can advance to the group stages of the Champions League.
Mathieu Debuchy – desperate to join Newcastle
Lille were beaten 1-0 on Tuesday night in the first leg of their play-off against FC Copenhagen in Denmark, and they would lose around €20M (£16M), is they fail to make it through to the group stages of the competition.
Lille could still get through but if they don’t, that could leave the door open for Newcastle to go back in with a bid, and that could even be successful in getting Debuchy to Tyneside late in the transfer window.
It seems that Newcastle have already had a couple of offers rejected by Lille for their right-back, as President Seydoux said the bids of €5M (£4M) and €6M (£4.8M) did not reach his valuation of the player, and he broke off negotiations with Newcastle a few weeks ago.
According to French sports daily L’Equipe, today, Seydoux may have to rethink his stance on the French International, if the club do not qualify for the group stages of the Champions League.
The second leg of their tie with Copenhagen takes place next Wednesday evening, and that will still leave two days left in the transfer window, and enough time for Newcastle to lodge a slightly improved offer, and the Tyneside club may be successful in getting the French International to Tyneside – finally!
It helps that Mathieu has made it clear to everyone concerned, that he is desperate to join Newcastle United.
