Alan Pardew was true to his word when he said he would not make eleven changes for the side to play against Atromitos tonight at the Peristeri Stadium in Athens.- he made only nine.
As expected Steve Harper is in goal and James Tavernier, Gael Bigirimana and Vurnon Anita all start with Papiss Cisse also in the side.
James Perch is the other starter who played on Saturday against Tottenham, and that could suggest Fabricio Coloccini will be fit to start at Chelsea on Saturday – we’ll see.
17 year-old Adam Campbell is on the bench and is likely to see some action tonight, but there is no Mehdi Abeid, even on the bench, so maybe he’s injured.
It’s hard to know what to expect tonight, but the positive thing is that the youngsters have not let the side down, and they were very impressive in the 4-1 win at Hartlepool earlier in the summer.
Big hitters Yohan Cabaye and Jonas Gutierrez are on the bench if reinforcements are necessary, as is Romain Amalfitano, who is also likely to see some action.
Ryan Taylor starts at left back, so his free kick and corner taking will be available to the side.
For Atromitos, 29 year-old Njazi Kuqi, who stands 6’4″ tall, starts up front for the Greek side, and he’s the younger brother of Shefki Kuqi, who was brought in after Andy Carroll joined Liverpool, to help out with the striker duties on Tyneside. Shefki is now at Hibs on a one year deal.
