Steven Taylor had a decent game at center-back alongside Fab Coloccini on Saturday at Stamford Bridge in the 2-0 defeat, and it will be important that Steven reproduces last season’s form if Newcastle are again to do well in the Premier League this season.
Steven Taylor – showing off new strip earlier this summer
Newcastle players have been linked with moves away from the club over the summer transfer window, although there was good news yesterday when Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said that Cheick Tiote was a good player, but he was not moving to the north London club.
But maybe it’s Yohan Cabaye who the Gunners are after, which was reported in the Sunday Express yesterday.
Alan Pardew has said repeatedly that he is worried about losing some of his top players before September 1st, and in truth, if we have all our top stars still at Newcastle next Saturday morning, it will be a relief.
Steven Taylor seems a little concerned about it too, as he said this in the Newcastle Journal today:
“Everybody will keep talking about what might or might not happen until the transfer window finishes.” “For me, I can’t wait for it to end. It’ll be nice to put an end to the speculation about players at our club.”
“We just want to see it all finished at the start of September so we can draw a line under things and move forward.” “It’ll be nice when it’s put to bed and we can forget about it.”
“We’ve got a big week coming up. We did really well out in Greece last week and stuck to our game plan well.” “We got the away goal, so that’s set us up nicely to bring them back to St James’.
“Hopefully, we can put in another strong performance and get through to the next round.” “Saturday’s defeat in London will be forgotten about if Newcastle finish off the job against their European opponents and make it through to the group stages.”
Andy Carroll was again on the bench yesterday, as it becomes clear he is not in Brendan Rodger’s future planes, but he did come on in the 84th minute, and had a header cleared off the line, and that could have seen Liverpool get the win.
It remains to be seen if Liverpool will loosen up on the fee they want for the big Geordie striker, but our inkling is that they will not, and Andy will still be a Liverpool player come Saturday morning.
But if we can get Debuchy through the door, which looks possible if not probable, we suppose we would be happy enough, but Douglas would also be a good acquisition and would help out our defense this season.
What do you think?

Comment #41I think Carroll would help with the 4-4-2 formation (which clearly doesnt work for us) with either cisse/ba playing off him. It means we can mix it up more. I hope we sign another forward cos we certainly need one.

Michael Owen did it at 17. I’m not saying play him every game, but at least have him on the bench, as Oldgit1 says we never had a forward on the bench. I do however think Pards subs worked the other day. I thought Perch passed the ball forward and retained possession well, whilst Raylor’s coners were dangerous

Comment #44I for one would love Campbell to get a regular chance? as it was a breath of fresh air watching R Sterling for Pool last night. Fair play B Rodgers for that gamble as he looked accomplished in that posisition.
I would think Campbell could compliment our team but is Pardew willing to gamble!!.
