€7M Fee Agreed With Lille For Mathieu Debuchy

As we had reported on Tuesday night Real Madrid have moved for Mathieu Debuchy and it seems that a fee has been quickly agreed with his club Lille, and that fee is reported in Italy last night to be €7M.

Mathieu Debuchy – soon to be a Real Madrid Player

Sky Sport 24 in Italy is claiming the fee is just €7M, and that after Newcastle were said to have bid €6M for the player, but that offer was turned down, so it seems that once again Newcastle have missed out on a good player for a measly €1M – which is around £800K.

The reports on Tuesday night were that Real Madrid had moved in for the player, and were willing to pay as much as €10M, but it seems he could have been signed sealed and delivered for just €7M – which is around £5.6M – always assuming the report in Sky Sport 24 is correct of course.

It is now expected that Debuchy will fly to Spain and have his medical and complete the transfer – it took Real Madrid two days to complete this move – and Newcastle have been trying to sign the player all summer.

What’s wrong with this picture?

It’s all very well trying to get really good deals, but when you hold out for weeks for a small amount of money it becomes foolish, and only allows a bigger club to move in and sign the player from under Newcastle’s noses.

That’s exactly what’s happened with Matthieu Debuchy, and we cannot think that his pal Yohan Cabaye at Newcastle will be too impressed with all of this.

We’re not.

Newcastle should have had this player signed up weeks ago.

And Newcastle could have quickly sold Danny Simpson for at least £2M to recuperate some of the fee for Debuchy, but as it stands the Tyneside club may now lose that much on a player who has just one year of his contract remaining, and could move next summer for nothing.

It just doesn’t make any sense to us.

No problem, quality players such as Cabaye,Tiote etc will leave very soon, then back to the drawing board again.
Such a shame we couldnt upgrade our team when there was money available and due to our last season success we HAD to do that.

Ed- you’re an evil genius. That article made me frantic with excitement for about 3 seconds before I realised- hang on, this is Newcastle we’re talking about what’s the catch? Oh I see, it isn’t Newcastle we’re talking about. 🙁

Although i like our transfer strategy, i find it confusing how we couldn’t budget over 800K for a player of Real Madrid’s quality?!?

Disappointing. Also imagining how Cabaye feels about this if it indeed is true. Don’t have a good feeling about it…on the other hand, maybe he will find himself on the bench and then we get him on loan in January.

Debuchy won’t be on the bench. Arbeloa is their current RB and Debuchy is better than him.

This is the same Sky Italia who were saying Demba Ba was signing for Galatasaray! We may yet see Debuchy in a Toon shirt.

its an embarrassment tbh. we had such a brilliant opportunity to take the club forward having qualitified for europe. yet we havnt used that to attract players. or at least stumped up the fees to purchase the quality we can now attract.

    its pathetic.

Well, This goes to show that our transfer policy isn’t as good as people think. All for the sake of €1m. Less than a £1m. If we were not prepared to pay that then I’m very very dissapointed. Good luck to him at Real of he goes.

I have now lost complete faith in our board, and even of we win on tomorrow and Sunday and don’t sign anyone. I will not be happy and I’m sure a lot of others won’t be either.

The window to transform ourselves into a top club is closing. If this news is true, *and* if this costs us Cabaye as well, we get what we deserve. Back to mid-table for us.

I realize Carr is brilliant, but how many more diamonds in the rough can we expect to find? Debuchy is world class. He is worth 12 million, not 10! Why we couldn’t bid 8 off the bat, get him in here, and get him integrated into our system is beyond my understanding. THIRTY-FIVE MILLION for Carroll and we miss out because we’re stingy over ONE?

and if it turns out that we do infact sign andy carroll for a ridiculous fee yet refuse to stump up the extra 1mill for a player of real madrid calibre , well i dont now about you guys but that will leave a very sour taste in my mouth.

Starting to think about it. Lille have qualified for Group Stages of the CL and no longer need to sell Debuchy. So tbf this might be a load of rubbish. After all, how many times had we a bid accepted for Debuchy?

Still. That totally contradicts my earlier post.

Ed you made & broke me then. I thought by the title we’d agreed a deal for Debuchy. If Real do sign Debuchy for €7M I’ll lose all faith that I regained in the club’s hierarchy. We need to sign players get the cheque book out Ashley!

Dream move for any player. It’s hard to have any ill feelings when the likes of Real Madrid get involved. Good luck to the lad. I hope it works out really well for him and don’t forget he wanted to come to us for ever so long. he comes out of all this looking really good.

    Lets just say one name

    Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

If we up the ante…..and pay what we need to get this guy…..Debuchy will be not missed

Mbiwa fits our concept better…he can play all the 4 backfield spots I would love to see him at RB TBH.

Why not just move on and sign a different french defender who is younger, bigger and more versatile

looks like with his contract status it could still happen.

Not a chance they’ll finish top 6. Too many overpriced average players who they’ve spent far too much money on. Mid table at best for them this season.

This can still be a smokescreen from Lille trying to get Toon to up their bid.
When there is a plan in place you need to stick to it. Do not get emotional and attached to certain things, the plan is there to be executed.
As disappointing as this is, I still believe in the board. There is a strategy. So far I haven’t seen too many people that has outdone Ashley in business, I think they will get it right.

This is not the end of days

Debuchy would have filled a need for an attacking RB..but to say this move relegates the team is absurd

It is possible Lilly is still hurting from Cabaye and were not going to deal with the Toon again cost be damned

Just another thought we bring in a LB and move over Santon?

See the world is not ending

The simple fact is that a straight choice between Real Madrid and Newcastle sees only one winner. Sadly for us, Real Madrid is still every players choice in that situation.

Signing a left back and playing santon is not an admission thy Danton is not a left back….it’s playing a young player in his primary position.

Deadline day… Enrique and Carroll anyone?

@USToonRaider, I definitely wouldn’t put it past Lille to have found genuine humor in selling Debuchy to Madrid right under our noses. It’s been the same fiasco with FC Twente, after converting their £3.5m sale of Tiote into one of the most desirable defensive MF’s in Europe.

It’s a reputation that can win fans and enemies as well.

If this turns out to be true…it shows how farcical our recruitment policy is. It’s all very well saying we won’t be held to ransom but we were indeed trying to get a current French international on the cheap while he was begging for us to come in for him. Drawing out the deal and playing “public hardball” is always a dangerous game and is fraught with with the chances of other teams coming in. Sometimes you just have to either bite the bullet and broker a higher deal or move on quickly to your next target – we have done neither! If he goes to Real, it looks as though we have willingly played the stalking horse because we are too tight to part with even a slight proportion of the vast trading coffers accumulated.

If it comes down to the difference of £800,000 between getting a very good rb and not getting one, we will undoubtedly pay a heavier price later – whether that be in a lower finishing place (it’s about £800,000 a Prem place, I believe)or the next club we approach will know we are desperate for a rb and adjust their asking price accordingly.

While nothing should be taken away from what has been acheived last season it has to be said that to lose a player of the quality of Debuchy over 800k is not only tight but stupid.

Here we had a player of amazing pedigree who publicly stated that he wanted to play for Newcastle yet Ashley still wouldnt grab that opportunity. Its absolute maddness. There probably isnt a club around that wouldnt have signed him given the opportunity.

When you think of how much money that has been spent (or not spent) under MA, without our scouts I doubt any of this feel good factor we have felt would have happened. MA certainly doesnt seem to care and before the pro MA group have a dig, look at the facts they speak for themself.

With the punishing schedule ahead for NUFC and the size of squad I expect a tough season.

I for one am sick of the management spouting how they expect a certain amount of players to come in yet nothing ever happens. Its all very well building for the future but without the hear and now the future doesnt happen
