Ben Arfa was great, Anita was great, Bigi was great.

  • 2 mattyNUFC // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:22 PM

don’t believe any hype or spin…this was a poor, poor performance. my player ratings

krul – 6 – nothing great, nothing horrible

simmo – 8 – until he got injured

anita – 5 – flashes of settling, but overall very shaky. given he played the majority of the match out of position

saylor – 6 – solid at the back. he and colo the ONLY ones with any sort of fight, santon too

colo – 7 – got beat for pace but we all know that’s not his strong point. doesn’t help when the midfield in front of him is either sulking or non-existent

santon – 7 – thought he did exceptional first half, the only one pushing forward, even with the poor guti contributing zilch in front of him

guti – 4 – one of the worst performances i’ve seen from him. he wither plays FB, DCM, or not at all in my mind

cabaye – 1 – a bit harsh, yes, but his sulking was embarrassing and petulant. get mehdi abed on there, someone with something to prove. cabaye needs a few games on the bench to put him in his place. he’s not as good as he thinks he is and, regardless of the supposed bids for him, he is worthless unless he’s in an ACM role. either way, thoroughly unimpressed with his BS today

HBA – 6 – great goal, but not enough from him, though i mainly blame that on the players around him. no support whatsoever

bigi – 6- learning and will get better. no one in the team can do a cross field pass like him. got caught out in possession a few times. still plenty of time for him, and, unlike many, he at least tried.

marvs – 6 – only a few touches but he is probably our most composed player on the ball bar HBA. it’s insult to throw him on for five minutes when everyone else did f all all game. if he doesn’t start playing regularly, pards has lost the plot

ba – 5 – great control, rarely did anything with it though

cisse – 4 – poor poor poor. a few chances to score and a bit unlucky, didn’t have much service, but unless he has service, he’s of no service to the team. his touch is below the standard of most teams, his distribution is poor and his pace is nothing to write home about. maybe 4 is a bit harsh as we know his strengths so we should be playing to them but still, he has to find a way to contribute if the service isn’t there for him

pardew – 3 – poor from the off. his lack of tactical know-how was exemplified to me in the 82nd minute. Bigi hit a poor ball from a free kick at the half way line. pardew, fumbling and not knowing what to do (the camera panned to him for a few seconds while he looked completely lost pacing up and down the touchline) decides to shout his head off at bigi, a sign to me that he didn’t know what to do, or how to really the troops, and was out of sorts. poor showing from the team as a whole, manager et al

  • 3 toonking // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:22 PM

    my team for next game
    anita colo saylor santon
    tiote cabaye
    obatan HBA marvo/jonas
but if pardew still insist on 442 with both ba and cisse up front i don’t care if fane start calling for his head as he deserves it. think back to early part of last season what was the biggest thing we blamed it on no plan B which is just what he seems to be like ATM.

  • 4 Dannyo // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:23 PM

The fact that Biggie is that high up the list in his debut, should embarras the crap out of the rest of the seniors.
Talking about leading with example eh?

  • 5 toonking // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:24 PM

btw a question for people about cabayes last free kick did any of you think he should have passed it to obatan who had loans of space to run into?

  • 6 kevymartins // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:24 PM

@marc f u ck off how the fcuk could you come on here and say that you pr!ck …fcuking spast!c

  • 7 AndyNUFC // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:24 PM

Ben Arfa as always a class of his own, but great seeing Anita and Bigi, 2 very small and young players getting stuck in. Think Jonas’ only contribution was a bit of running and then pulling somebodys shirt… Really can’t see why Obertan didn’t get put on with 15 minutes at least left, showing much more confidence.

  • 8 pbNcl // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:25 PM

Horrible aston villa, very much like when we played the unwashed last year, scrappy as owt.

We looked off the boil to be honest, didn’t win virtually any second balls and we were reduced to hoof ball quite a lot. No accuracy in a lot of passes and lacked any balance or creativity. All down to villa’s game I think, they didn’t let us play, fair enough.

Only the 3rd game in haha, no need to worry. Jus gotta kick on! Big break now till a MASSIVE game against everton! Get tiote back and we get our anchor back!

  • 9 ToonIcon // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:25 PM

for me HBA for his goal and willing to take people on think Bigi and Anita done well also

but to be fair they were a poor Villa side and we should of smashed them

  • 10 WWYCD // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:26 PM

Colo….just because I love him so

Pards needs to give the team a hammering and if am being very harsh take a good look at himself in the mirror and remember who runs the squad maybe a call to Hoots wouldnt go amiss

  • 11 HBA Blood Twister // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:26 PM

Hatem is king. Both highlights of the match came from him.

    1/ Incredible goal.
2/ Tw@tted Bent in the face. Ha!!

  • 12 mattyNUFC // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:27 PM

sorry for the typos…had fire in these fingers! :)

  • 13 WWYCD // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:27 PM

I will admit I thought that but Cabs nearly scored so we were probably wrong haha

  • 14 ToonDownSouth // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:28 PM

Do none of you think that it’s perhaps a little naive to suggest that you know more about tactics – about our players, and what’s best for them – than Pardew?

  • 15 naptoon // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:28 PM

santon for me thought it was his best game in a toon shirt though if i could bigi wudve been joint mom just missed out cos santon played full 90.
cabaye shouldnt even be on list after that woeful display and if pardew says we were jaded after midweek ….. totally different line up.

  • 16 toonking // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:28 PM

ED it might be more better having votes for worst player of the match because ATM it is so obvious who is MOTM.

  • 17 pawl250 // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:29 PM

Ben Arfa will top this because you lot are brainless!

He contributed a goal yes but his overall game was poor! He desreved it at Spurs! Chelsea shoulnt have had a vote cos they were poor!

    Bigi or Anita MOTM today.

Goals arent everything, and Ben Arfa lost the ball ALOT! his passing was poor and he even broke up some of our counter attacks because mis controlling the ball or had a poor touch!

He was better than most but thats not a positive given how badly we played.

Bigi or Anita deserve this vote, anyone who voted Ben Arfa clearly just bums him he is human you know, and he was not the best player on the pitch today. Cracking goal though, cant argue with that! If only his other 5 shots matches that quality I remember a 40yard+ plus shot I mean WTF?! It barely reach the goal aswell!

  • 18 WWYCD // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:29 PM

    Yes and no ;)

Oh and anyone happy Simmo got injured ur a joke of a fan imo

  • 19 mattyNUFC // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:30 PM

    not at all

  • 20 lukes26 // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:30 PM

Agree with your ratings except for Bigi, who was nothing short of excellent. Blocked a goal, marshalled the midfield and passed the ball with confidence. Tiote has competition.

    Deserves at least an 8?

  • 21 toony tempah // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:30 PM

Anyone else think Anita looked better at right back than Simpson. Anita playing there just pointed out how one dimensional Simpson is.

  • 22 Conaldo (The Wizard) // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:31 PM

Wtf? Was I at the wrong game or something??!!
We tried to play a little game called football. Villa tried to play a little game called lets kick the sh1t out of these especially the little ones.

And Ed, I love you but haway, our goal was against the run of play? Get real. We were the best side all the way through that match.

Yes we dropped points, villa were ridiculously lucky not to have been hammered. I mean they started time wasting at 36 minutes.

    Good points –
Ben Arfa has clearly been working on his right foot.
Bigi looks fantastic. It’s almost unnatural for such a young lad to fit in so comfortably, especially as a sub.
Anita is a very good right back.
    We dominated possession.
Our players are starting to click. Cabaye looking sharper. Still long way to go.
Obertan looked decent when he came on.

    Bad points
    We let them score
We were a bit ropy at the back sometimes.
Cisse is still miles away in terms of form.

Those saying Pardew got it tactically wrong. We play an ultra attacking 433, it wouldn’t have worked.
Villa stopped us from playing football, mainly by kicking us.
We would have been vulnerable to counter attack, with bent a constant presence behind our defenders, they would have scored.

Yes we are dissapointet to drop points, but give yer heads a shake. We were by far te better side and deserved to win.

    “Ben Arfa rescues magpies”
“cheating villa scrape by with a point after 60 minutes of time wasting and UFC style tackling.”

  • 23 mattyNUFC // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:31 PM

i agree. thought overall santon did the best, especially with the awful guti in front of him he still managed to create a few attacks

  • 24 kevymartins // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:31 PM

@tds no.but don’t you hate teams like villa stoke westham who just play hoofball get a goal then practully have 11 defenders on the pitch no skill involved just a pathetic strategy

  • 25 mattyNUFC // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:32 PM

villa ran circles around ua at some points. it was hardly all hoof ball from them!

  • 26 toonking // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:32 PM

if goal are not everything then how the fck are we meant to win games or even get a draw once we go down.
consider that before saying he was poor.
and name me one other player who show a threat.

  • 27 FatmanJoe // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:33 PM

Ben arfa was poor but his goal was good.

  • 28 Dannyo // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:35 PM

I can understand APs 4-4-2, it’s the best way to incorporate our best and biggest players.

But AP has to cut through the middle here and say enoughs enough, this is hurting the team, time to rotate the squad more often.

  • 29 kevymartins // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:35 PM

@matty really because everytime I seen them they were hoofing it up to bent ..look at there goal ffs

That c unt lambert done the excact same thing vs us with norwich last year.

  • 30 jonobbad // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:35 PM

    Cabaye looking sharper?
Maybe i was watching a different match but he was woeful

  • 31 NUFC STEVE // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:36 PM

ANITA is not a midfielder!!! Gave the ball away alot and Bigi looked much better in there. And if anyone has any doubts about how vital a part Tiote plays in the team, they got their answer today!!!

  • 32 Tonytoon73 // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:37 PM

Pawl, who is brainless? I don’t think i am son.

  • 33 Tommyy // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:38 PM

TDS – no not today, it was obvious what we were doing wrong and it took too long to change it.
Santon motm for me, good defensive decisions, strong off and on the ball. A good outlet.

  • 34 ToonDownSouth // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:38 PM

Well if that’s the case, I really cannot converse on here. Ridiculous.

We’ll just switch to 4-3-3, and then everything will be fine!

The simple passes will stop going astray, the corners will start clearing the first man, we’ll start marking players for crosses and set pieces, we’ll stop missing simple chances.

Easy right? Just change formation, and it’ll all be fine.

  • 35 Conaldo (The Wizard) // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:39 PM

Jinnobad – I agree compared to last season he was dire, however he linked up a couple of times with Ben Arfa and others and showed glimpses of his old self, and his free kick was very unlucky not to score.
He has a long way to go but he’s getting there in my opinion.
Disclaimer – the opinions stated above are opinions. Please don’t hunt me down and kill me. I know cabaye was poor as much as you do.

  • 36 kevymartins // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:39 PM

Cisse and ba need to get there act toghter or it will be oh yea thats right there is no one else to play there

  • 37 Widowmaker // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:39 PM

We should have only two options to choose from next time around.

    1. HBA’s left foot
    2. HBA’S right foot

  • 38 toonking // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:39 PM

ben arfa was not poor he just did not have assistance until obatan and marvo came on.
i saw from the moment we went 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 we looked much better and why?
simple HBA was able to play where he likes it best through the middle also he didn’t have forwards standing around he had marvo and obatan moving about to assist him
so don’t blame HBA blame cabaye cisse and ba for not getting into space for passes back and forth.

  • 39 toonarmydownsouth // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:40 PM

    Good summary mate

    Nufc leazes
Absolute fcuking w@nkers nothing to do with opinions everyones entitled to one positive or negative but to wish/celebrate injury to any of are players well you just shouldnt be classes as fans more like first class tw@ts

  • 40 spitfire_ // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:40 PM

Pardew was fantastic with his 4-4-2… which didn’t work in the last two games for PL. But who am I to judge the gaffer.

  • 41 NUFC STEVE // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:41 PM

Teams for match against everton? Surely he can’t go 4-4-2?

  • 42 mattyNUFC // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:41 PM

rose tinted glasses, i think. not a slight on you, but to say villa didn’t play stuff on the floor for long stretches is not accurate. i agree their defence are a bunch of thugs but in our half they were passing and moving, namely in the second half, where we were reduced to quick counters that usually sputtered out

  • 43 toonarmydownsouth // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:43 PM

Another plus was how well obertan linked up with benny

agree changing formation doesnt mean the lads will suddenly pull there finger out!

  • 44 FatmanJoe // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:43 PM

No he was poor. I’m not complaining or having a go but it’s early in the season and poor performances happen occasionally. It wasn’t that others weren’t around him, he just did basic things wrong. Short passes he could have made, crossing, distribution, corners. They were bad. But as we improved in the second so did he.

Players are allowed to have bad games you know.

  • 45 Whistler // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:44 PM

Just sat down with my pint after watching one of the most frustrating performances for a long time…it’s hard to be objective when you’re so p1ssed off at drawing with a really poor Villa side at home….442 does not get the best out of our players for a start…Ba is a great player but we had a winning formula, why are we so hell bent to accomodate him in a 442 this year!? poor movement throughout the team, no invention, lacked tempo through the middle and in the final 3rd, too many direct balls played upfield etc etc etc….Cabaye doesn’t look fully fit to me either and yet another injury….with a lot more games to play this year, squad strength is going to be a major issue…..just as we knew it would be

  • 46 NUFC STEVE // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:44 PM

Unless we change, I can see us getting a hiding against EVERTON!!

  • 47 Tonytoon73 // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:44 PM

tads @39 could not agree more mate.

  • 48 lukes26 // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:44 PM

Conaldo, agree with you completely. 4-3-3 wouldnt have solved the problem. The problem is the ability for the forwards to hold-up the ball.

We got by at times last year because Tiote and Cabaye were ruling the midfield and we could push forward in numbers. Since Tiote is injured and Cabaye isnt 100%, this hasnt happened. Cisse , Ba, and yes, Ben Arfa are all below average at hold up play.

A solution would be Shola (which would send this blog into riotous fury if he started) but he’s injured. Shola’s hold up play is among the best in the League.

  • 49 kevymartins // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:44 PM

Well I can only remember them running at are defense once the whole game and that was when nzoggie i think it was gave it to bend an bigi made a block.

  • 50 naptoon // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:45 PM

pardew said he was disappointed with our set pieces last season and was looking to bring in a defender with an ariel threat who wud chip in with 8 goals or so. well alan no 8 goal defender (thanks mr.ashley) and if u were disappointed last season you must be suicidal after the shite put in today from dead balls. do they not practice in training?

  • 51 spitfire_ // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:45 PM

AP: “Our crowd expected us to win today, which gave it an edgy feel – but we should have played a lot better if I’m honest.”

WTF!!! Should the crowd must expect lose to play well? FFS!!!

  • 52 seancavaz // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:48 PM

    Hatem Ben Arfa £6million
    Eden Hazard £32million

May cause a debate but the Toon in my opinion have a better value player! Wonder strike today, shame we didn’t get all three points but HBA outstanding, Anita as a right back looked a class apart and much more comfortable there then centre mid and Bigi wey all I can say is £1m and the lad just looked unreal!

  • 53 Sholadona // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:48 PM

Ben Arfa has a great game today. Bigi was class when he came on. Set plays definitely need some work as Pardew has said after the game. Aston Villa are horrible, didn’t even want a win. Referee and the Lino on the Milburn side were both terrible, we were getting held and shoved all through the game and none of them seemed to spot it.

International break now so we should have Tiote (Who can make a big difference), Perch and Shola back for Everton.

  • 54 jonobbad // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:48 PM

    We must change to 433.
Not for every game but for teams we should be beating easily, its pretty obvious 442 isn’t working.
The players look much more confident playing 433.

  • 55 FatmanJoe // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:50 PM

Ben arfa was average. If he hadn’t scored I don’t think people would be raving so much.

  • 56 IITianToon // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:56 PM

It was so frustrating to watch the game today. No good movement from our strikers at all. Some ‘star’ players of our team just didnt do their shift. They really need some strong words, if not a hairdryer treatment. But hopefully they will realise this themselves over the next two weeks, and who knows we may go back to our best come the next game. here’s hoping!
MOM: Bigi, improving by leaps and bounds every game, plsu that goalsaving tackle at the end.
Jonas needs to be dropped for Marv/Ober.

  • 57 seancavaz // Sep 2, 2012 at 6:58 PM

The fact he did score, the way he scored, and the time he scored pulled us back into a game and gave us that lift we needed. Not his best game, and yeah he gave the ball away at times, but a player willing to accept the ball and not be afraid to try things is better then lumping it forward or in a lot of cases back peddling to amount to nothing! HBA has started the season with that drive that’s saying “I’m here to be noticed and get praise and recognition and pull my club forward” to me he’s got that in him to be compared to the top 5 in his position and tbh I’ve already mentioned the hazard reference but I honestly feel within himself he’s got a point to prove that he’s a better player……all I’ll finish on is I’d rather him have the ball and try then sit and sulk on the touch line! Toons stand out player so far and the rest of the team need to stand up and be counted

  • 58 FatmanJoe // Sep 2, 2012 at 7:01 PM

I just don’t think a player who had such poor delivery all game can be said to have had an excellent game. But his goal was good.

Glad you enjoyed his performance. I’m looking forward to having a full season out of him.

  • 59 pawl250 // Sep 2, 2012 at 7:15 PM

TonyToon – If you voted Ben Arfa then yes you are! Or atleast on the subject of football!

Toonking – If you dont score a goal you can still draw games. If you concede a goal you can lose games. If Bigi didnt make that class block infact he did it twice today we could have lost 2-1 or 3-1!

Him and Anita really were the reason we didnt concede a 2nd!

So before saying Ben Arfa was amazing perhaps you would take note and think if these players hadnt done what was needed then we could have lost not drawn! Ben Arfa scored a goal, but he gave the ball away alot in midfield stopping us possibly getting a 2nd goal!

He also messed up a potential simple second goal towards the end as stated! Then people think he is great because he has 10 seconds of magic! Seriously?!

Its like saying Obertan plays the game, does nothing loses possession scores a goal! He would not get votes like Ben Arfa does just because some people lick his arse!

  • 60 sirtoongospel // Sep 2, 2012 at 7:18 PM

    Anita for me. Quality player

  • 61 stunna // Sep 2, 2012 at 7:19 PM

HBA & Bigi had good games. The defense was fine except for falling asleep on the goal. Ba, Cisse & Cabaye were subpar.

Think it is time to scrap the flat 4-4-2. Ba & Cisse are too similar, and without Tiote, Cabaye has too much defensive responsibility. I wouldn’t mind seeing Ba go to the bench and giving Marveaux a chance on the left side of a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.

  • 62 pawl250 // Sep 2, 2012 at 7:20 PM

    Fatman Joe I 200% agree.

He was awful, had moments of brilliance but he contributed nothing else all game other than the goal!

I am positive stats would show he lost the ball probably more times than any other player, or he would be high in the list!

Sometimes he attempts to do too much, and even at times attempts to take on 4-5 players! OK it works 1 time out of 10 but if we lose the ball 9 times we could have possibly created something rather than waste it!

He was average today, and only reason people are voting is because of his goal. Had it been like I said Obertan who scored he wouldnt get the votes if he contributed nothing else.

And Ben Arfa was awful defending today, had no desire to track back! And he did the same in the Chelsea game! Look at Chelsea’s second goal he was sitting on the half way line with his arms on his hips! Sorry but people need to stop saying he is our best player every game because he has a total of 3 minutes of magic combined out of 90 minutes!

Ok if he actually scored a hatrick in those 3 minutes he deserves it but he had like 5 shots today only 1 was good! his free kick was god awful too!

  • 63 Zebras4Life // Sep 3, 2012 at 4:15 AM

Collo. Bigi. Anita. Top 3 today

  • 64 phoonck // Sep 3, 2012 at 7:52 AM

yes i agree with those who thought that Hatem Ben Arfa had an average game.. but its those moments of brilliance that win you games! he’s a match-winner!

im not a hardcore Hatem Ben Arfa fan.. i love everyone single of our players including Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson and Shola Ameobi(unlike some here who keep on criticizing them, dont forget, we got to where we were last season with these players and they did their part, so give them credits where its due). think Robin van Persie, think Didier Drogba, think Nicolas Anelka, think Sergio Kun Aguero, think Carlos Tevez, think Luis Nani, think Wayne Rooney, think Teddy Sheringham, or even think Alan Shearer. they are your match-winners! they sometimes went missing in the odd games, throw tantrums, sulk in games, tried too much or did nothing worthwhile, then suddenly pops up to nick a goal or two, in just moments of brilliance! would u rather have these in your line-ups or warming the bench?

yes i do agree sometimes its frustrating that Hatem Ben Arfa tried to do a little too much and lose the ball, but didn’t the world’s best players like Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo too? its because their teammates know these players have the qualities and will win you games and needs more chances, and keep giving them the balls and have them try countless times! they are the ones who can split open a defence with their vision and skills!

these flair players with bags of skills needs chances to build on the momentum and confidence. he played it simple at times too didn’t he? with Yohan Cabaye, Jonas Gutierrez, Danny Simpson, Vurnon Anita and Gabriel Obertan.

have you guys ever wonder why Hatem Ben Arfa was ineffective for large part of the games? could it have been due to the formation(as a right winger in a 4-4-2) we’re playing in? but he seems to always bring something extra to the game when he’s being deployed as a right forward in a 4-3-3 or behind the strikers in a 4-3-1-2.. formation matters alot.. Yohan Cabaye looks average at best as a centre midfielder in a 4-4-2 but excels, very influential and can dictate the tempo of play as an attacking midfielder in a 4-3-3..

    just my 2cents worth
    keep the faith
