Ben Arfa The Man Of The Moment On Tyneside

6:08 pm, Friday, September 7th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 112 Comments

It took Hatem Ben Arfa a while, but this year he has shown the fantastic form he was renowned for when he played for French Champions Lyon and Marseilles, and in the first three Premier League games of the season, the 13 times capped French International has been Newcastle’s best player in every game.

The great Ben Arfa in action last Sunday

And he already has two goals this season, a penalty against Tottenham which he earned,  and then whipped the ball away from official penalty taker Demba Ba, and coolly sent Brad Friedel the wrong way.

And then on Sunday he got Newcastle a point, when he launched a missile, this time with his right foot, that rocketed into the back of the net, and showed everybody he’s not a just one footed player.

That goal should be used to show just how fast a ball can fly, when a player with almost perfect technique shoots at goal – it was simply remarkable.

And it seems that Yohan Cabaye, his French team-mate,  is well aware of the magic of Ben Arfa, and he had this to say on the  Newcastle web-site today:

“When the defences are hard, every time he is the best player to make the difference for us.” “Against Aston Villa it was him and even against Tottenham, he won the penalty to win us the game.”  “He is the man of the moment and I’m very happy that we have him in the squad.”

It remains to be seen what the International future holds for Hatem, because he didn’t exactly see eye to eye with Didier Deschamps when he was at Marseilles and Deschamps came in as the manager.

And with Didier now the French National manager, Ben Arfa has not made the last first two squads since the European Championships.

And before we end this article – here’s that goal again from last Sunday – the video’s not too good – but you get the point:

My goodness it’s still fantastic – I feel a whole lot better now. :D

He is the most skillful player in the PL…. more to come from him

  • 2 MacToon // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:17 PM

Great goal, great player, glad he’s at NUFC.

    Hatem is a hero
he is now an adopted geoedie.
    Long live king arfa.
Sounds like a nickname qhich could stick.”king arfa”

Legend in the making is Benny boy

  • 5 FatmanJoe // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:18 PM

First week of school finished and exhausted!

Need to blow off steam… Need an argument.

I think Ashley has done a fantastic job and we should be on for fifth or sixth.

Plus I think colo got beaten for pace loads in our last game and against quick strikers this season I’ll worry about him.

    Any takers?

  • 6 MacToon // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:22 PM

I also think Hatem’s ready for the free-role number 10 position now, build the team around him and hope he doesn’t get injured.

  • 7 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:23 PM

Fatman…Sure why not. Problem is I missed the last game and thing 5th or 6th is achievable. Not much help really.

    On Benny…what a player

Ed, could you possibly get something done about the virus or whatever on your server that redirects us to unpleasant porn sites? It has been going on for weeks now and I know others have complained of the same thing. Thanks

  • 10 FatmanJoe // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:28 PM

Dam. Usually when I come on here I can’t stop getting into arguments but now I actually want one… The kids are much more accommodating!

    Thanks for trying tho Ibiza!

And benny is a real player. Needs to try and bring others in to the game as well. Saw cabaye against villa in ample space on several occasions and benny just ignoring the pass.

  • 11 Adopted_Geordie // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:30 PM

Can easily see Benny scoring 15 goals this season if he is given a free role just behind the strikers. This lad just oozes talent and class!

  • 12 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:31 PM

    Jasper….Have you tried an adblocker?

Fatman…Don’t worry, it wont last, not on here :)

Adopted….I can see Benny scoring 15 even if he was in goal

    Yeh exhausting week at school.
You teaching or learning or both ?

Agree totally so no argument here :)

can’t wait for the game against Everton, hopefully our anchor man is back executing them sublime slide tackles. roll on the 17th!

  • 16 89Norcal // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:37 PM

I think sometimes we underestimate the challenge of sustaining injuries like Benny had, and then working hard to come back an even better player.

It just shows the raw determination Hatem has to be amongst Europe’s elite. Another player we can count on. He could even be our main attacker should Cisse and Ba stay longer in the ACON.

  • 17 Adopted_Geordie // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:38 PM

Amidst the doom and gloom that surrounds our club with the weight of expectations and lack of transfer activity, quite a few take it for granted how good a player we have in someone said the most talented player in the premier league and i am proud he plays for us.

  • 18 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:45 PM

Sorry to disappoint you Fat Man but i don,t come on here to argue!

Hatem is an adopted Geordie and the good thing is, there is more to come!

Hope no-one takes him out the same as Phsyco De Jong did!

  • 19 rknufc // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:57 PM

for anyone whos interested theese are the newcastle player ratings for FIFA13
    Krul 79
    simpson 76
    taylor 77
    colo 81
    santon 75
    ben arfa 81
    cabaye 81
    anita 75
    gutierrez 78
    cisse 82
    ba 82
i think they could have been better but overall theyre not too bad

  • 20 veto // Sep 7, 2012 at 6:58 PM

always used to buy him on football manager , santon too ! , crazy how there both here playing for us :D

  • 21 Super Magpie // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:00 PM

Unfortunetly thuggy teams like chelsea, Stoke and Sunderland will realise they can’t stop him so injuring him would be the best thing to do.

I was absolutely raging when De Jong Broke his Leg because I knew we’d lost our most skilled player for a season.

If something similar was to happen again I would be even more P*ssed off.

  • 22 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:03 PM

Was just watching the Republic of Ireland against Kazakhstan, 1-0 down up to the 87th minute, got a penalty to rescue an unlikely point only for Kevin Doyle to step up and nick all 3 points! :D

Buzzin, Origins of Symmetry is Muse at their most Muse-like, Absolution is fantastic, Black Holes and Revelations holds a personal sway as my favourite, the Resistance has a few cracking tunes and is slightly disappointing as an album and the few songs that I have listened to from The 2nd Law has left me wondering why I have only seen Muse 5 times…must plan the next gig I am going to :D

Sorry for the digression, back on topic, HBA is one of those players that only come around once in a blue moon, he is certainly something special, let’s hope we get the best out of him and that he repays the club for sticking with him during his darker times here, if that happens then the club can go very far indeed :D

  • 23 Super Magpie // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:06 PM

Anyway here’s my team for Everton

    Anita Colo (Perch) Saylor Santon
    Tiote (Bigi) Jonas
    Ben Arfa Cabaye Marveaux

I’ve dropped Cisse because he’s been below par this season and it would be very unfair to drop Ba, who although with a lack of service has been trying.

However this is the team pardew will play
    4-4-2

Anita —-Colo ( Perch) —-Saylor —-Santon
Ben Arfa —–Cabaye —–Tiote (Bigi)—– Jonas

  • 24 Super Magpie // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:09 PM

You’re right, HBA is a player who IMO should be not be sold for any price. Along with Krul.

    Everyone else has their price.

  • 25 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:10 PM

not really happy with the ratings given to our players krul 79 common he should have had atleast 83 for what he has done

  • 26 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:11 PM

    Super Magpie

Personally I add Tiote to that list too, I see him as the future captain of the club and he should be kept at all costs too. I agree that GK should always be a position of stability, if you’re chopping and changing keepers it doesn’t let the back 4 bond with the keeper so Krul should never be sold, also he isn’t half bad either :P

  • 27 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:13 PM

Also, does it really matter how Fifa rate our players? These are just the opinions of people outside the club, surely our opinion of our own players is the only one that counts.

However, it is interesting to note that if those ratings are true, Simpson is rated higher than both Santon and Anita.

    Food for thought…

  • 28 Super Magpie // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:15 PM

A year ago I would’ve had him down as well.
However he hasn’t been able to stay fit for a good period of time and is continuing that into this season.

I can’t fault his ability and attitude when playing though, he makes our team so much stronger. We wouldn’t have conceded 5 at Spurs and Fulham had he been playing and not at the ACON

  • 29 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:21 PM

Ah Super Magpie, have a little faith in him, HBA was out injured for a year, doesn’t mean he hasn’t the same ability, Saylor is highly regarded as a player despite having the unenviable title of a walking sick note, and we still think he can do a great job at the club.

I wouldn’t say that Tiote has overly concerning injury problems, he has missed a few games with a calf niggle and will no doubt be back to his supreme best for the club.

I would hate for us to sell him to a “bigger” club, because let’s face it we won’t be selling him to a club on par with us, as only the so called big clubs could afford what we would want for him, and if he ever did move I have no doubt he would be as brilliant for them as he is for us. The simple solution is to just keep him here :D

  • 30 thebionicMAG // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:30 PM

The think I like about Benny is the fact that he WANTED to play for us. Remember the photo of him at Newcastle Airport when he went on strike? He was like “Screw you i’m flying straight to Geordie land until its sorted out!”. And what do we get? Fantastic displays. Thats what you get when you sign players who want to play for you. He’s just fantastic. :D

  • 31 beefman13 // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:31 PM

Ben arfa for us fans is the diamond dogs1 he just lifts the whole gaff, more wonder goals to come from him as well in my opinion, for me he will continue scoring and improving, what a kid to have in your team such a game changer, he loves the toon, he is worth at least half a dozen times what we paid for him,

its funny cos in the past our buys went back over, now we have kis worth 4/5/6 times what we paid for them.

they all seem to improve it virtually a role revesal from the owen boumsong luque marcellino days etc etc

i think its brilliant though, what a frigan scouting system we have!

  • 32 Super Magpie // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:33 PM

As a player I regard him as a fantastic player. As I do for Saylor and HBA. HBA’s leg break was a freak injury as was Saylor’s achilles rupture.
Although Saylor had never consistently been able to stay fit before that anyway.

Tiote just seems to get these niggles so often that keep him out longer than expected. Now is it because of the way he plays? Or is he just being bang unlucky all the time?

It really is a shame because when he plays the team looks so much stronger and assured.

  • 33 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:36 PM

    Super Magpie

Well I think the tackle he put in against Spurs that caused the injury he has now was totally needless, but that’s the way he plays.

I for one would be absolutely gutted if he was ever sold, he is the business. Strap a captains armband round his arm when Colo hangs up the boots and I think you will see a man possessed.

  • 34 Super Magpie // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:38 PM

    Bionic & Beefman

He adores the fans and we adore him. I think he was blown away by the support he got when he suffered the leg break and wants to repay us with everything he’s got.

He wouldn’t have got support like that back in France with his ‘reputation’. Nor would he get that support if he joined any other team in our country now.

  • 35 bollance // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:39 PM

How class would it be being hba and walking around Newcastle with everyone worshiping you? Breaking your leg and getting what was apparently thousands of get well soon cards and messages.

Newcastle must be a nice environment for him. It would be a risk moving because he will not be hero worshipped anywhere else. He is just about back in the French fold. For wise he should be there, no doubt. Without him this season I honestly believe we would be in a little trouble now in the league. He has taken the pressure off.

Hope our team don’t rely on him too much!!

  • 36 Spellcheck // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:41 PM

Sign the mecurial Hatem Ben Arfa up on a long term contract,we love him,e loves us!!!!! Ruddy, MUSE,the best live band on this planet, hope their tourin nxt year!!!!! Howay the lads.

  • 37 beefman13 // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:42 PM

Super magpie, that is correct son, he is a god given talent playing in gods own city, how privilaged are we to watch the goals v everton v bolton v blackburn v villa! millions of fans around the world only dream of having a gift like this kid.

  • 38 Krul to be Kind // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:42 PM

I’m actually excited at the prospect of the kids coming through and I am very content at where we are in our 5 year plan, in fact if we look at the body language of say Cabaye and the hunger/desire from Amilfitano i wouldn’t be adverse to us dropping Cabaye and giving a youngster a chance, look at Sterling at Liverfool, he has came in and shaken things up a bit, competition for places and shedding some of the complacency setting in with players ‘dropping their levels’, McClean last year at The Unwashed. Remember Michael Owen debut goal against Wimbledon, who’s to say Campbell isn’t to do the same against someone to fire Cisse back into action, it will be a turbulent season and I for one will be buckling up and enjoying the ride that NUFC take us on (I think you call that unconditional love)

  • 39 Super Magpie // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:43 PM

I can only imagine him having the whole team so there is 11 of him on the pitch, I don’t know if that is good or bad? :D

I think he would a good captain but the total opposite of Colo.

  • 40 bollance // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:43 PM

    Krul starting for Dutch

  • 41 Conaldo (The Wizard) // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:43 PM

Bordeaux tickets booked. They seem to have sold surprisingly quickly. I would advise those who can to buy them as quick as possible.

  • 42 Pushy Pardew // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:47 PM

I See Shane Fergie is injured again with a . He was so promising but is always injured. He’s dropped out of Irish squad he could have come into team for Everton game what with Simmo out.

  • 43 beefman13 // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:48 PM

Krul to be kind, i like amilifatano a lot, i like cabaye, cabaye takes a while to get back in to his stride but more good things to come from him i just know it.

i think our youngins are class, we have so much to cheer at the moment world class players and great kids coming through, we have our europe adventur eand the league and FA cups and of course the prem to go after.
    great times in my opinion.
i am chompin on the bit for this international bollocks to get out of the way, i love my country, but the toon ,its everything.

  • 44 Conaldo (The Wizard) // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:48 PM

Ibiza – see told you it would be boring… :)

  • 45 Super Magpie // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:49 PM

    Anyway Lads

Off to watch the England Match.
1-0 already. I really hope we don’t sit back now.

  • 46 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:50 PM

11 Tiotes? Utter epicness. I just want a player who leads by example and Colo epitomises that for us right now, as does Tiote, there is only one man capable of filling Colo’s boots as captain and that is Tiote.

Muse are unreal live, seen them 5 times, looking to get to a gig soon, they’re playing at the roundhouse theatre in london but you have to apply for tickets as it’s for charity. Every gig is unique that’s what I love about them.

  • 47 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:54 PM

Loving the optimism, agree with you entirely. Can’t wait to get these internationals out of the way too so we can get back to “real football” ;)

  • 48 Pushy Pardew // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:55 PM

HBA has been working on his right foot he really surprised
Villa defenders . What power he really is a class act.

How many chances does Defoe need!?!

  • 50 Krul to be Kind // Sep 7, 2012 at 7:56 PM

Well said on the Cups Beefman… I don,t expect us to go all the way in them but I want to see desire and passion but above all, being competitive and everyone pushing each other on, including the kids… Look at Bigi too when he came on, immense is all I can say for an 18 year old ‘boy’, if thats the hunger coming in from the youth… bleed them in I say!

  • 51 Krul to be Kind // Sep 7, 2012 at 8:00 PM

I too love my country (Ireland) but international weekend’s ruin my happiness not because of the trepidation my country puts me through every international break but the fact the lads aren’t playing!

  • 52 Pushy Pardew // Sep 7, 2012 at 8:01 PM

Good to hear someone recognise how technically sound Cabaye is a number of fans have been saying he should be dropped . He stills looks a bit short on fitness but he links up so well with the more talented and is a threat when played as an attacking midfielder.

  • 53 lukes26 // Sep 7, 2012 at 8:03 PM

the problem for england is that lampard and gerrard are the only regularly starting players for their clubs (at least for now)

  • 54 Pushy Pardew // Sep 7, 2012 at 8:06 PM

What’s happened to Abeid thought after a great pre season that he would at least make the bench. He’s another really promising youngster. Best crop we’ve had for many years.

  • 55 beefman13 // Sep 7, 2012 at 8:09 PM

krul, exactly, bigi he must be the mustard in training for AP to bring him on like that, that tackle late on was as good as a goal, but he was all over apart from that, maturity beyond his years.

ruddy, i just dont want to be pessimistic about anything, sat, sun, mon, or a thursday night its what keeps most of us going, i would honestly say if i was not happy about the toon.

i simply cannot wait for match days!

shearers goal v everton, bennys goal against bolton were to of the greatest moments in my football life. how the cathederal did not collapse is beyond me.

  • 56 beefman13 // Sep 7, 2012 at 8:16 PM

Krul, its fantastic that lads from the emerald isle are so passionate about the toon, if i see any lads out on the lash in the toon who are here to support our great club they get a massive welcome from me for sure, proud beyond belief of yous. got to tell you fergie has been my fav of the youngins for thwe last 2 years, quality youngin, hope he can stay fit. class act.

Nice to be on here with some positive people for a change. I swear that some of those calling for Pardew to be sacked and saying we should have bought all and sundry are not genuine fasns. I agree totally, nothing beats that for me, I sat in a pub surrounded by United fans when he chipped that in and to say the least I’ll never forget the technique and sheer cheekiness of Albert that game against a 6″5 keeper about 6 yards of his line (i think), best player in my Toon years and my role model growing up!!!

when Albert made his first appearance against Liverpool I remember watching somewhere (one of those old timers reliving their lives shows) the said person stated about the foul or sending off or something he recieved for absolutely tanking Neil Ruddock because the players were going on about how hard he was… so Albert done him, beautiful, a true legend he was, the man in modern football to get away with the Porno tache lol

just heard we in talks for free agent royston drenthe? decent utility man,can play left back aswel as left midfield and second striker.hope its true, his temperment shouldnt be a problem with our management.

  • 88 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:28 PM

roe….Where did you hear that? He’s a decent enough player, not sure what the deal is with his attitude, but I’m sure they wouldn’t take him on if they didn’t think they could handle it

  • 89 Krul to be Kind // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:30 PM

Cracking player on his day, just hasnt had many days since moving to real, i remember watching him a few years back in an underage event and he was magnificent, i think the dutch won the tournie but wouldnt be sure i thought then he was gonna be a player but very cock sure of himself and i think he is asking astro wages though

  • 90 roe997 // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:33 PM

  • 91 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:35 PM

The release date for The 2nd Law is the first week of October I think ;)

Jesper yeah it was you who put me in such a mood for Muse it was great, put me in such a good mood all day mate thanks for that! Unsustainable is really different, I like to call it rockstep, mix between rock and dubstep, it’s a sign for things to come that this album is going to be another experiment of sound.

On football, that was a very commanding performance from England, the Ox was great, Cleverley looked very good and Walcott is nothing but a greyhound with absolutely no footballing ability whatsoever, how he even makes the squad is beyond me.

However, coming from an Irishman I don’t think I can criticise :P Beefman, I can testify to the warm welcome Geordies give us Irish when we go over, I lived in the Toon for a year and yous were top class, can’t wait to go back over in September!!

  • 92 Krul to be Kind // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:35 PM

And just by coincidence he played left back at that tournament, very santon like, perfect for 433 but as Ibiza says there is just something about his attitude

  • 93 jesperfuglsang // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:36 PM

Just went through the last thread ;) damn that took some time lol

    Ruddy…about Madness, I dig it man ;)

I lived in London in 2000-2001 when Origin of Symmetry came out so I know all about having a special bond to an album :)

  • 94 Indian Magpie // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:37 PM

What a GOAL by Falcao Columbia 1 Uruguay 0

  • 95 jesperfuglsang // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:38 PM

Ruddy you’re welcome ;) and I would go to a Muse concert anyday with you mate!

  • 96 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:40 PM

I have listened to Madness about 10 times, every time it just gets better and better. Love the electro bass line, the Queen-like riff in the middle and the sheer capacity of Matt Bellamy’s vocal range is unreal.

Black Holes and Revelations will always have that connection with me, it was the album they were touring when I fell in love with them, I love all of their albums, I even like certain songs on the Resistance album, not too fond of Exogenesis symphony but it shows their capabilities.

Must go looking for this Muse questionnaire, I am surprised we haven’t been told of for talking about music, maybe people just have a yielding respect for Muse ;)

  • 97 jesperfuglsang // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:40 PM

…and I think we need to bring Ibiza cause he suffers enough where he is ;) lol

  • 98 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:41 PM

    Jesper! You’re on! :D

  • 100 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:43 PM

Right lads, as much as I really want to stay to talk about football and Muse I am off to the cinema to get me a bit of Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman ;)

    LAWLESS yeaaahhhh boyyyy! :D

  • 101 jawballsaswallwell // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:43 PM

Ben Arfa appears s a better player than Newcastle are as a team and you’d think we need to finish in the European places to hold on to him. Losing him would surely be a big blow to our sustained progress as a team and club and we also have a few others who would have similar options. It’s going to be fascinating to see how the club juggles their obligations in the various competitions. You’d imagine a good cup run might well coincide with a poorer return in the league and you’d think we really do need to qualify for Europe again if we hope to keep this promising team together and be in the position to strengthen further each window. Critical season unfolding.

    Plug it in baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 103 check the toastie // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:48 PM

Benny is class, always has been, always will be, shame Pardew thought he wasnt the answer to unlocking swanseas backline last year. Rumour was benny wasnt apllying himself in training, however when you are the best player at the club by some distance maybe you could be given a bit of slack.

Ryan Taylor was playing in front of the lad, he was coming on as sub and trying his heart out and daft bellends on here were giving him grief for losing the ball (you know who you are) enjoy the boys talent while he’s here, he wil move on as he is truly world class.

Hail King Arfa and the new knights of the Toon Table.

  • 104 jesperfuglsang // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:50 PM

Ruddy…or maybe ppl has just realized we don’t give a damn ;) HAHA

That electro baseline in Madness reminds me of Origin of Symmetry and especially my fav track Plugin Baby :)

…and after all these years of great Muse songs it is still my fav :) Madness has a Queen feel to it I agree.

You don’t like The Resistance you say; it is a bit of a mouthful, but it grew on me. Especially the first part of the album an the strangely Exogenesis pt. 2 :)

  • 105 check the toastie // Sep 7, 2012 at 9:51 PM

Darren would get into some negotiations with you regards golf clubs, however i have witnessed how much of a haggler you are with match tickets, you probably want a new set of Taylor Made’s for 20 quid. tightarse.

Even if we sign Drenthe he cant play until jan as hes over 21 and he cant be added to the squad list, its why Stoke had to appeal for the Owen deal which was just in before the deadline.. So cant see any truth init unless the fa somehow allow it
