Wit the injuries Newcastle have so far suffered this season in just a short three weeks, we may see some experienced players playing out of position, and it’s either that or bringing in some of the talented youngsters Newcastle have at the club at the moment.
Will Bigirimana keep his place if Tiote not fit?
In fact if Cheick Tite cannot make it at Everton, and with Danny Simpson being out Alan Pardew may have to again call on 18 year-old Gael Bigirimana as the holding midfield player, although the Newcastle manager played Jonas Gutierrez in central midfield a few times last term.
Jonas was asked today what he thought of playing in central midfield, and he had this to say to the local Newcastle press:
“I have never played in the center of midfield before, or maybe I did a long time ago, but not recently.” “It is something all players may have to do this season with the extra games.”
“My attitude is that I try to play at least 7/10. I try to do the job the manager wants me to do. Maybe I won’t be spectacular in that role, but I know that I will do a good job.”
“I try to improve, when I have been given this role I try to watch other players who have played this position.” “It is the most important thing in football – you need to understand where you need to be at certain moments in the game.”
“When I play left-back, central midfield, in the No 10 role, I always try to find the best position to be in.” “The biggest thing is that you need to know exactly where you should be because when you are in your normal position you do it naturally.”
“So I watch the best players in the world who play in central midfield and look to them.” “I watch a lot of left-backs and central midfielders to learn about them.”
It remains to be seen who will play in central midfield at Everton, although we hope Cheick Tiote can make it and that Vurnon Anita will then be able to continue at right back, where he looked impressive in the second half against Aston Villa.
The Newcastle manager could also play James Tavernier at right back, and move Vurnon Anita back to central midfield, or play Jonas in central midfield.
Or he could move Davide Santon to right-back and bring in Shane Ferguson at left back, and the Northern Ireland International has always looked a good player in the Newcastle first team.
And James Perch could come in at right back with Anita in central midfield, and that’s probably the choice Alan Pardew will make – if Cheick is still not available – or he could even swap those two players and have James in defensive midfield.
But our choice if Cheick isn’t available, would be to continue to play young Gael Bigirimana in defensive midfield, and the 18 year-old did all that was asked of him when he came on in that first half on Sunday.
He deserves to keep his place if Cheick cannot make it, but somehow we don’t think that’s the choice Alan Pardew will make.
