Versatile Anita Already The Best Right-Back At Newcastle

10:25 am, Tuesday, September 11th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 33 Comments

Vurnon Anita has made a good start to his Newcastle career by showing Newcastle fans he is capable of playing either in the center of midfield or at full-back.

Vurnon Anita – best right back at Newcastle?

Vurnon started the last game against Aston Villa in central midfield, but then when Danny Simpson went down with a hamstring injury and had to leave the game, Gael Bigirimana came on in central midfield and Vurnon switched to right back.

And it bodes well for Newcastle that both players went on to have good games in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw.

Ajax manager Frank De Boer did not want to lose one of his top players in August, but that’s what happened when Newcastle finally agreed a fee for the Dutch International, which we may add they failed to do with another two or three players during the summer.

Frank De Boer knows all about Vurnon’s versatility, and in his interview today in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, this is what Frank said from his base in Amsterdam:

“Vurnon is a great player because he just changes position without complaining.” “He will drop into defender at left-back or right-back and just do the job for the team.”

“He did that for me on many occasions with Ajax. I’m sure it will be the same at Newcastle.” “We know with Vurnon that whatever job you ask him to do he will give you every ounce of sweat he’s got.”

“Newcastle have a great player on their hands.”

Vurnon played in central midfield for Ajax last season, and in the season before that he played at left-back, so he already has lots of experience playing in either role, and he can start doing that for Newcastle.

Certainly if he performs as well at right back in the upcoming games as he did against Aston Villa, Danny Simpson could find it hard to oust Anita from that right back position when he returns from his hamstring strain in two to three weeks time.

And Vurnon seems so good, that the Dutch International deserves a starting position somewhere in the Newcastle side – and that could well be at right back.

And in our recent poll 46% of readers think Vurnon Anita is already the best right back at the club – and this poll is still open if you’d like to cast your vote.

Anita cannot be the ‘best’ right back at Newcastle!
He’s only played there like once or something.

Simpson IS the best right back without doubt.
Tav ‘might’ be the best right back one day but not right now.

*readies himself for abuse after daring to say Simpson is our best right back*

Not really sure who is the best RB yet. Anita hasn’t even played a whole game in the position yet, so whilst he likely will be the best, perhaps a little premature to say he is.

GarageFlower…..Don’t worry, January will be here soon enough and then we get to do it all over again…yippee :)

Edd case….No abuse here. Spot on.

Voted Simpson, but it’s not like I am saying Anita is not good enough. I just don’t know.

Honestly, I am quite happy with Simpson’s defensive qualities. It’s just his crossing and close control that I did not enjoy watching last season. I said last season on purpose here, as I’ve noticed his crossing improved in his very few games for us this season.

  • 6 Nufc-83 // Sep 11, 2012 at 10:43 AM

Well half a game is enough for me as lets be honest its not difficult to be better than Simpson. Also a large amount of people may have seen the lad play at full back for Ajax and therefore not basing it on half a game.

  • 7 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Sep 11, 2012 at 10:44 AM

Widow….I agree with that. He does seem to be improving on his attacking abilities, albeit slowly. As a defender, which is his primary role, he is decent and not deserving of the stick he gets on here most of the time.

hope tiote will be back for everton game we really need him and I think Cabaye is back to his best cause in his last game with France he was in his usual form

  • 9 Edd Case // Sep 11, 2012 at 10:45 AM

    Ibizatoon – cheers.

Just cannot understand why some people don’t rate Simpson?

I would have to agree that his distrubution is his weak side of his game. I hate long ball hoofs (even though they can be effective) and his crossing is generally poor BUT……
How many points did he save us from dropping last season alone with goal line clearences?

He may not be Dani Alves going froward, but nor is Dani Alves a Danny Simpson when defending.

  • 10 Nufc-83 // Sep 11, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Simpsons defensive quality’s are poor his positional sense and the fact that he backs right off any winger with an ounce of pace is just shocking, People think he is a great defender because he cleared a few of the line some of which he was at fault for in the first place and if he had done his job we wouldn’t have required a goal line clearance.

  • 11 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Sep 11, 2012 at 10:55 AM

Nufc-83…..I don’t think anyone has said he’s a “great defender”. We all know he has weaknesses to his game, most players do and he needs to work on them and improve. I think most people realise he can be improved upon and that may well be Anita for the time being, but less than one game in a toon shirt, doesn’t prove he’s the best yet…although it looks like he may take the title with ease.

Edd…..I suppose when you have players like HBA, Cabaye, Cisse, Ba, Colo, etc it’s easy to look at the others and think they’re simply not good enough. It’s wrong imo, but I can see how they come to the conclusion.

  • 12 Nufc-83 // Sep 11, 2012 at 10:56 AM

This article gives a fair reflection i suppose (stats to me don’t show the whole picture).

    Agree completely.
Though similarly, people seem to have taken to Perch, who I’d class as similar in terms of ability to Simpson.

I think it boils down to wasting possession. Being a full back or wing back mean distrubution must be quality. Perch generally plays as a central defender these days and they are generally always forgiven for simply smashing the ball forward or out of play.

I feel for Danny because he’s a very decent right back, backed up by stats but people freakishly zoom in on him if he whacks the ball up to Cisse or Ba who fail to control it etc.

That said, if only he did improve that side of his game, he’d HAVE to be considered for England, given that Hodgson seems it fit to include the likes of Lallana, Sterling and so on.

  • 14 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Sep 11, 2012 at 11:15 AM

    Edd Case….

Fair point with comparing Simpson and Perch. I personally don’t get why people seem to have such a hatred towards him, the lad is improving. Maybe it’s the “Man U reject” tag?

On an England call-up, whilst he can certainly do a job for the national team, I do think there are better RB’s out there.

    Completely agree….who voted for Anita???
Danny Simpson was VOTED 2nd best right back in the Prem a year ago!

  • 17 Brutooon // Sep 11, 2012 at 12:48 PM

    1) After only one match Anita overlapping is MORE than what Simpson did in 3 seasons

    2) Tavernier is NOT GOOD ENOUGH. he should at least got some senior cap by this age

    3) Perch is not the best but is good enough to play at RB.

  • 18 Robby Bobson // Sep 11, 2012 at 12:54 PM

Anita hasnt had the chance to prove himself in midfield as him and yohan have always been outnumbered, 2v3 at chelsea and 2v4 at villa. Right back he looks doesnt at crossing and suprisingly capable at heading.

  • 19 Ketsbaia9 // Sep 11, 2012 at 1:34 PM

I agree with what Anita is doing for us. He is getting forward more than Simpson (just what Warren Barton/Gary Neville did).

Simpson and Williamson are the worst defenders in the league. I’d be surprised if we concede less than 3 goals against Everton in the next match with those liabilities in the team. We need someone who can get forward, beat a few players and whip a good ball in (i.e. Debuchy). Anita is a good full-back, but he needs to be utilised in the DM position. Signing a few players in January will help.

My team v Everton would be:

    Anita Perch Saylor Santon

    Ben Arfa Abeid Cabaye Marveaux

    Cisse Ba

Everyone have their views but most will know deep in their heart when saw a good player. His overall rating is better then Simpson.

But can he defence deep when we needed to? That we’ll have to findout.

Everyone’s better than Simpson. Don’t rate Tavernier. This is my rankings in terms of right-backs at the club (best first)

  • 23 davis_toons // Sep 11, 2012 at 2:09 PM

Whatever it is, with your current squad we needed everyone to work hard again to acheive something.

Until a better player is selected, everyone will have a chance to show. And the manager will select the best player to do the job for every different match.

“No Five Fingers Will Be Of Equal Lenght”

  • 24 thebionicMAG // Sep 11, 2012 at 2:38 PM

I must admit I have been fairly uncomplimentary when it comes to Simpson for two reasons: hoofing long balls and crap crossing. However I beginning to think think that I may have been too harsh. He has without doubt saved us on many occasions with crucial goal line clearances and his positioning most of the time is faultless.
To be honest its not his job to deliver amazing balls for the likes of Cisse and Ba so perhaps a different attacking strategy should be thought out for him should he find himself in an advanced offensive position. One that doesn’t require pin point delivery, something more in line with his strengths rather than weaknesses.

  • 25 davis_toons // Sep 11, 2012 at 2:59 PM

As a defender Danny is fine. But as a modern defender, he is still improving on it.

The main thing is he wants to learn and willing to learn. Which we can all see through his play from his past until now.

But if you want someone who can defend at the same time attack then we should be talking at someone else, let’s be fair.

We should be glad that we have a decent defensive right back in the team.

What we need now is for the team to play as well as last season. Our midfield have gone down quite a bit in the past few games.

Apart from HBA that is shinning. Showing more energy in the middle.

  • 26 davis_toons // Sep 11, 2012 at 3:11 PM

According to some the ball must try not to be lost in the middle of the field too often. Or else YohanC and ChiekT will have all their energy chasing after balls.

Players with lesser control of the ball should pass and not just Pump it up unless danger. (cause thats how “old SAM” plays, but Not Now, just look at how Westham play football)
Once the ball is pump up it will usually reach an oppsition and in seconds its right back at where it is.

  • 27 davis_toons // Sep 11, 2012 at 3:19 PM

Warren Barton is a different, he is a bless for Wingers as he can tag along very well with any AM/ Winger. He can dribble btw. Most full back now can dribble (moden fulbacks)

Even current CD can dribble as well now. Thats is why Modern Games are harder to play now. Isnt why they are paying better?

  • 28 AmericanGeordie // Sep 11, 2012 at 3:31 PM

It’s immaterial if Anita is the best RB at the club because HIS best position is holding midfield next to Tiote in a 4-2-3-1.

Our best lineup assuming NO injuries (to Simpson, Raylor, Colo, etc.):

  • 29 beefman13 // Sep 11, 2012 at 5:01 PM

vernon anita is a class act who can play midfield central or left or right back, i get the feeling he would be just as good in any of these positions, great to have a player like this, danny simpson gives us 100 per cent as does ryan taylor and mike williamson, they dont let us down not my fav toon players but still very important to us

tav has done nowt wrong apart from a bad first half in greece, he does not warrant fans saying hes not up to much

the kid will get better and better.

  • 30 stephen1971 // Sep 11, 2012 at 5:18 PM

your shooting the gun a bit there ed, the lads only played 1 half at right back for us, thats an insult to the rest of the lads to be honest

  • 31 Cool Hand Luke // Sep 11, 2012 at 5:46 PM

Ed, that was a bit crass to be fair, simmo has been doing his best for us for x amount of seasons and is a solid player, to say Anita is a better RB remains to be seen as he has only played there for half an hour for us.

  • 32 josh // Sep 11, 2012 at 7:11 PM

Ketsbia, that list has no footing what so ever. God help the world if your a bricklayer. That very list shows exactly how much you know about football, sod all, every opinion you ever have I value as much as getting my ball hair caught in the trimmer. And I don’t know how 50% can say this, as anita hasn’t even played a handful of games there. I personally think this headline is a bit harsh, and some of the criticism is unwarranted.

  • 33 matt11_25 // Sep 11, 2012 at 8:28 PM

Too early to vote for me. I think Santon should be on the list. Would to see him and Anita switch sides in a game if were are having trouble breaking a defense down.
