Newcastle’s goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman has been interviewed today on the Newcastle web-site, and he says that this is only the start for Tim Krul and there’s more to come – and he’d like to see the Newcastle goalkeeper play in a World Cup final.
Andy Woodman – Newcastle goalkeeping coach
Andy played for a number of clubs as goalkeeper, including around 160 times for Colchester United from 1995 through 1999, and the Londoner has entered the ranks of coaching.
Andy followed manager Alan Pardew to Newcastle shortly after Alan arrived in December of 2010, and he says Tim becoming the new number one goalkeeper for Holland, is one of the proudest moments in his career as a goalkeeping coach.
This is what Andy told nufc.co.uk today:
“I’m extremely proud. It is one of the proudest moments I have had as a coach.” “When I first came to the Club me and Tim made a pact, and that was our goal.” “Obviously he had to get in the first team at Newcastle first, but I promised Tim that I would push him and make sure that he became the Dutch number one.”
“It was like ‘job done’ in respect that we have got him there, but straight away the conversation has been to make sure we keep him there.” “But we are by no means done, let me tell you. Our next goal is to make sure that he’s playing in a World Cup final.” “I had a little heads up that he would be close to playing, and the hardest bit for me was trying to keep a lid on it. I wanted to shout from the rooftops!”
“I went to the game and it was great to see your keeper out there in an atmosphere like that.” “Tim’s form has continued from last year and watching him play in Amsterdam I thought he was superb.” “He felt his way into the game and then as it went on he just got better and better.”
“I can’t see why Tim Krul can’t be the Dutch number one for many, many years – he’s that good.” “We’ve worked hard, put a lot of hours in, changed one or two bits about his game and his mentality, but ultimately it is Tim Krul who has got himself there.” “We train hard and everything we do is at a high-tempo, because the reality is that the ball comes at 100mph.”
“So if you aren’t training at that intensity, you are going to always be playing catch-up. We’ve made sure the training is on it every day.” “The other side of it is that I like him to smile and like him to enjoy what he is doing.” “Tim is quite an intense lad, so I’ve tried to bring that into him as well.”
“We work – we work hard – but we smile while we are working.” “The culmination of that with Tim’s attitude and drive has got him to that position.” “It’s an amazing achievement and what’s really great is the trust the manager has put in not just Tim, but other young players as well.”
“That has a knock-on effect down the ladder with all young players here, as they realise they are going to get a chance if they are good enough.” “What Tim has done is fantastic and it should inspire all the young goalkeepers at this Club.” “I couldn’t be prouder of what he has achieved so far, but it is only so far – there is a lot more to come from Tim Krul.”
Andy Woodman and Alan Pardew made the short trip over to the Amsterdam Arena last Friday night to watch Tim’s very first competitive game for his country, and of course his first ever game in the World Cup.
And the Dutch beat Turkey 2-0, but the opposition pressed the whole game, and Tim was as cool and as competent as ever in the Dutch goal, and had an excellent game.
And Andy’s son Freddie, who’s still only 15, joined the Tyneside club from Crystal Palace just over a year ago, and he seems a chip of the old block.
Freddie has already been capped by England at the U16 and U17 levels, and along with 19 year-old England U19 goalkeeper Jak Alnwick, they are two up and coming young goalkeepers at Newcastle.
It’s a pity Tim Krul is now out injured , but we hope it’s just for a couple of games, and that he will soon be back between the posts for both Newcastle United and Holland.

Comment #1I think this wave of negativity that is hitting the fan due to what AP said about the CB situation is a bit much. He may be contradicting himself a little but let’s ask ourselves, is he really? Did we actually chase a CB this summer? Was it a case of missing out on Douglas or a case of never being in the market for him in the first place?
Perhaps he did look at the likes of Tavernier and Streete and think to himself, “If push comes to shove I wouldn’t mind sticking them lads in there to do a job”, but ideally he would have wanted to do it in the League Cup, and bring them in slowly, it just so happens that Colo being injured has heightened our anxieties about CB, we are forgetting though that Perchinio is looking so solid every time he plays, we’ve got Saylor back, Willo in reserve and who knows how good this young lad Good is?
The only player we know for a certainty that we were realistically in the marketplace for was Debuchy, because we did need an upgrade at RB, but we were not going to go above the market price for him and as such pulled out of the deal, I was disappointed like all of you were that we couldn’t get the deal done but it was frustration at Lille’s tactics of negotiation, not frustration at ours.
Pardew is no man’s puppet, he is no apologist, and neither am I. Perhaps he is a little cheesed off, but is doing a professional job by spinning the situation, or like I said, maybe we were simply never in for a CB.
He probably wanted another young striker through the door but I think we will see a lot more from young Campbell than any of us anticipated at the start of the season.
Just because I am choosing to take a more positive approach doesn’t make me a numpty, just like Jimmy and wynsleap’s more negative approach doesn’t make them numpties either, it is just the way some people see it.
Only time will tell if these younger players step up to the mark, and only time will tell if the transfer policy used this summer was the right one. Until then, let’s get behind the lads who will be lining up on Monday and enjoy the ride 😀

Comment #2the problem (if you call it that) this season so far, has been the gap in between our strikers and midfielders, Ben Arfa would definitely solve that in a 4-3-1-2 formation, however if Pardew doesn’t wanna change things that much, even a 4-4-1-1 would be more effective with Ba playing in the CF/CAM role using his strength to bring others into the game, or even flicking on our inevitable long balls towards Cisse.
The people who say 4-3-3 (or variants) won’t change everything overnight, are somewhat right, it will not; however what it will do is encourage the players particularly in the middle of the park, to start playing with the ball on the ground. Personally i think it would’ve been better to start the season in this formation, i’m not a 4-4-2 hater but with it being a very rigid formation, the players need to be in full flow so to speak, to do the damage due to the space inbetween each department… and lets face it, we’re far from in full flow right now.
I’m fully behind Pardew, and we have a fantastic set of players. We’re sitting on here talking about the scary prospect of certain Everton players…..they don’t have a Ben Arfa? They don’t have a pass master like Yohan? Trust me lads, Everton will have their doubts and worries too. Should be a great game between the leagues two “best of the rest” teams, and considering 3 years ago we weren’t even part of “the rest”, that brings me, and hopefully all of you’s, great pleasure in hearing that.
WE’RE DOING JUST FINE, EVERYBODY RELAX.

I tend to agree that at 4-4-2 we need to be physically in full capacity to really get the best out of the lads, and that 4-3-3 would see a much more fluid style of football, I don’t think fluid football will be the order of the day at Goodison Park against a pretty dogged side like Everton, but let’s hope that we start to try and impose ourselves more on games by doing what Pardew said he wanted to do and that is to control the midfield.
As for your comments about how 3 years ago we weren’t even part of “the rest” I think you are spot on, it is something that we do need to bear in mind, in such a short space of time we have seen the transition from overpaid mercenaries getting us relegated to CL challengers, this season will show if we are capable of consistently doing it, but even if we fall back to 6th or 7th that doesn’t mean we will never be able to challenge the top 4 again, we need stability and gradual progression in order to push on and I am glad to see that happening.
Looking forward to seeing some football this weekend, real football not this International crap 😛

Comment #5Well I woke up today and decided I was going to be a quasi-fireman, then I was a quasi-policeman, then I was a quasi-trafficwarden, and THEN I was a quasi-accountant, so, in short, yeah I’m done 😛
Why do they do this? Make you wait 3 months for PL football again and then when it starts they shove stupid International matches 3 weeks into the season! Cannot wait to watch the boys back in action again!

Comment #7Ruddy and toonLFC, good posts that are a lift up for me personally.
AP took on a job here at NUFC that was expolsive to say the least, how has he done? for me maybe than any body else anywhere could have done, double manager of the season in the toughest league in world football all in his second year, a fifth place finish to boot, the odds for those two achievments would have been without exaggeration 500/1
He handles the melting pot at the toon brilliantly, he understands fully how we do our business perfectly, he is totally on board with all that.
He knows the arsenal way is our blueprint, i am fully behind that blueprint, the one that has pushed us forward the last three seasons.
If we can consistantly get to or near the standard of the gooners then i will be more than happy in the coming years.
they may not have won anything for a while but with this system they have won everything bar the champions league and they were in the final of that, they went a season unbeaten with the same system, they may sell their better players at the time but they normally get years upon years out of them first, and they have some terrific players at thys moment, cazorla diabi podolski gervinhio etc who will for me excite their fans and push them towards the prem title.
We are not a million miles behind them even now.
In, business you have to buy and SELL, it may hurt if somewhere along the line one of our blue chip players!
i wont kick off and spit the dummy out, i understand the situation, we will find replacements we have the system to do it and i am more than happy with the way our great club is progressing ps it isnt about the next half dozen games its about the next half dozen years and beyond.
Happy days, weeks, months, and seasons at the toon in my opinion ahead, I truly believe that.

Comment #8i hate International football more and more by the day, hell i’m even excited to watch Norwich v West Ham at 12:45 tomorrow afternoon, that’s how much i’ve missed the EPL. It feels like months since we played.
Yeah Ruddy “fluid” will not not be the word of the day on Monday, but we can get rough and rugged when we need to, albeit Tiote and Colo would help that, but our lads can be physical, and can take a bit of bullying. I do think even with the injuries, our team just has the edge over Everton’s, but i’m gonna’ say that aren’t i 🙂

My national team is the Republic of Ireland so I’ll let you figure that one out.

I don’t think anyone has managed to play fluid football at Everton since Moyes has taken over, I remember the Invincibles being spanked there a good few years back as they tried to play pass and move and Everton just kicked lumps out of them with 2 dogged lines of 4, they are exceptionally well drilled with some added quality but ultimately it will be a rough and tumble match that I think we could get a point from, really tough place to go but I share your optimism 😀
Beefman
You couldn’t be more on the button, it is about the sustainability, it isn’t about being up there for 3/4 years like we were with SBR and then slipping away again, it is about getting ourselves up there year after year and gradually getting stronger and stronger. I appreciate that selling may have to be a part of our policy but I am not accepting it as a given yet, as we don’t know what the long term game plan is, there are certain players that I would be devastated to see leave the club so I hope we don’t follow Arsenal in that sense but if we could replicate what they do on the field I would be delighted.
Some people are just frustrated that we “missed” an opportunity to grab 4th place this season, which is weird as I had only thought the season was 3 games in so how could they possibly know we won’t be in and around 4th by the end of the season? 😉

Comment #20Players like fabregas and van persie were angling for a move, nasri was getting unsettled as well ,massive big paydays for them and thats the pressure city and arsenal and barca can do they can unsettle players, and so its best for everyone when they move on.
Henry was at arsenal fore years and could have got astronomical amounts for him but did not seel until in fairness he and the club wanted it.

For me, I reckon the transfer window was, ` lets go for a couple of targets if they are reasonable money, but if not, not to worry, the development lads will be brought on in the cup comps. If its finance linked with shrewd trading then I can see that being the way it was done. I am with the omnipotent and all-seeing Sage on the 2nd class academy though – even if it costs a couple of million it would have been the best investment to upgrade our setup. I for one would have said `Ah, OK.` If big Mikey and the Delster had said `we kept our Debuchy money and poured it into the top-rung academy we now proudly own`.
