Newcastle’s goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman has been interviewed today on the Newcastle web-site, and he says that this is only the start for Tim Krul and there’s more to come – and he’d like to see the Newcastle goalkeeper play in a World Cup final.
Andy Woodman – Newcastle goalkeeping coach
Andy played for a number of clubs as goalkeeper, including around 160 times for Colchester United from 1995 through 1999, and the Londoner has entered the ranks of coaching.
Andy followed manager Alan Pardew to Newcastle shortly after Alan arrived in December of 2010, and he says Tim becoming the new number one goalkeeper for Holland, is one of the proudest moments in his career as a goalkeeping coach.
This is what Andy told nufc.co.uk today:
“I’m extremely proud. It is one of the proudest moments I have had as a coach.” “When I first came to the Club me and Tim made a pact, and that was our goal.” “Obviously he had to get in the first team at Newcastle first, but I promised Tim that I would push him and make sure that he became the Dutch number one.”
“It was like ‘job done’ in respect that we have got him there, but straight away the conversation has been to make sure we keep him there.” “But we are by no means done, let me tell you. Our next goal is to make sure that he’s playing in a World Cup final.” “I had a little heads up that he would be close to playing, and the hardest bit for me was trying to keep a lid on it. I wanted to shout from the rooftops!”
“I went to the game and it was great to see your keeper out there in an atmosphere like that.” “Tim’s form has continued from last year and watching him play in Amsterdam I thought he was superb.” “He felt his way into the game and then as it went on he just got better and better.”
“I can’t see why Tim Krul can’t be the Dutch number one for many, many years – he’s that good.” “We’ve worked hard, put a lot of hours in, changed one or two bits about his game and his mentality, but ultimately it is Tim Krul who has got himself there.” “We train hard and everything we do is at a high-tempo, because the reality is that the ball comes at 100mph.”
“So if you aren’t training at that intensity, you are going to always be playing catch-up. We’ve made sure the training is on it every day.” “The other side of it is that I like him to smile and like him to enjoy what he is doing.” “Tim is quite an intense lad, so I’ve tried to bring that into him as well.”
“We work – we work hard – but we smile while we are working.” “The culmination of that with Tim’s attitude and drive has got him to that position.” “It’s an amazing achievement and what’s really great is the trust the manager has put in not just Tim, but other young players as well.”
“That has a knock-on effect down the ladder with all young players here, as they realise they are going to get a chance if they are good enough.” “What Tim has done is fantastic and it should inspire all the young goalkeepers at this Club.” “I couldn’t be prouder of what he has achieved so far, but it is only so far – there is a lot more to come from Tim Krul.”
Andy Woodman and Alan Pardew made the short trip over to the Amsterdam Arena last Friday night to watch Tim’s very first competitive game for his country, and of course his first ever game in the World Cup.
And the Dutch beat Turkey 2-0, but the opposition pressed the whole game, and Tim was as cool and as competent as ever in the Dutch goal, and had an excellent game.
And Andy’s son Freddie, who’s still only 15, joined the Tyneside club from Crystal Palace just over a year ago, and he seems a chip of the old block.
Freddie has already been capped by England at the U16 and U17 levels, and along with 19 year-old England U19 goalkeeper Jak Alnwick, they are two up and coming young goalkeepers at Newcastle.
It’s a pity Tim Krul is now out injured , but we hope it’s just for a couple of games, and that he will soon be back between the posts for both Newcastle United and Holland.

There were more, but honestly it’s gone from mind and I had hoped gone from the blog.
Tsunki….I can go along with that reasoning. We would like to bring some good players in, but at the right price (our right price), if not, we’re happy with the squad and will wait – b*st*rds! 😉
The academy was a bit of a let down, I wonder if they knew they were short on requirements before hand? I agree, if money had been spent there then they would have had a lot more clout with this emphasis on youth….however, the other side of that is we do have some great kids already and some fans aren’t confident they can step in yet – so would more investment there make them any happier? Is it possible to make some of these fans happy (notice the word some – not all of ya 😉 )

Comment #46Hmm, I can’t wait for us to play Everton on Monday but I honestly can’t see us winning. Without Krul and Colo our defence looks very average. It’s a good job Everton don’t have any fast strikers too.
If Tiote plays then we have a chance. But we NEED to play a 4-5-1, we can’t allow ourselves to be overrun in midfield again. Everton are very good at doing this and we must not make it easier for them.
Jagielka and Distin have been solid for them so far and Baines is always dangerous on the overlap and set pieces.
My team:
Harper
Anita Saylor Willo Santon
Tiote (Bigi) Jonas
HBA Cabaye Marveaux
Ba
What we’ll play:
Harper
Anita Saylor Willo Santon
HBA Tiote (Bigi) Cabaye Jonas
Ba Cisse
Also is Perch still injured? I though he was only injured for a week or so.

Comment #50Beardos attempts to convince us he was Peter Beardsley himself was nufcblog gold imo. He also went through a stage of being a decent day to day poster. Not really sure when it all went t*t’s up, but there you have it. Very sad in the end.

Comment #54Just to clarify lads I am not a religious nut, nor am I a glory hunter, did you see our performance in the Euros? (although we have the greatest fans known to mankind, made me truly proud to be Irish…the fans not the team haha)
We all know when he’s on the blog so let’s just ignore him, he’ll get bored, he isn’t even keeping up the pretence any more he referred to me as Ruddy while using my name, sheer laziness haha
Right to swing the conversation back to football again lads.
Do we envisage a 4-4-2 lining out against Everton? And how are we going to counteract the beast that is Marouane Fellaini?

Fellini is overrated IMO. He’s a good player but if Tiote is fit then I think he won’t be much of a problem on the ground.
In the air there isn’t really anyone who could challenge him except Saylor.

I think it depends where they deploy him, for most of his Everton career he has been the holding midfielder allowing Cahill to make the lung bursting runs forward, now that Cahill is gone Gibson has reverted to the holding role and Fellaini plays much higher up the pitch and if he plays higher up the pitch like the way he did against Man U and they can put quality diagonal passes his way then we could find him a tricky customer.
Although I have read that Gibson is injured, so they may play Fellaini deep with say Osman in a more advanced role, he is someone I have never rated, even when he has played well against us so I think we could manage it. Tiote will probably not be fit but I say throw Bigi in at the deep end and let Fellaini worry about him rather than the other way around.
I agree that Saylor would be the only one in the side that could cope with Fellaini aerially, Colo, even if fit, wouldn’t have stood a chance against him which would have left him marking Jelavic but if Perch is fit I don’t see why he couldn’t do a decent man to man job on Jelavic, it’s those sneaky front post runs we’d need to watch out for, he’s a master at them flick ons.

Jelavic was their Cisse last season ( although with less spectacular goals 🙂 ). He is a very good finisher and his front post runs are dangerous.
I actually think Osman is underrated tbh. The last 2 seasons I’ve watched him he’s been great for them. If Gibson is injured then it will hamper them greatly but nowhere near the scale that injures are hampering us atm. I haven’t saw our squad decimated so much since 2007 when Roeder had to deal with around 14 first teamers injured ( while in Europe).
Pardew has got a similar task now and really needs to rally the troops together because atm our chances at Everton are Slim.
I also find it ridiculous that we have to play Monday yet play 3 days later than 3 days after for the next 2 weeks. We really are going to be stretched and we need players back… and quickly.

I must give you courtesy of replying.
Much like people are doubting whether Cisse can replicate the form from last season the same must be asked of Jelavic, although I think both players are quality and let’s hope our big No 9 gets firing soon as we need his goals.
Gibson stretches them pretty badly in CM and as I’ve said probably brings their most potent linking player in Fellaini a bit deeper into CM which will hopefully help us, if we had Tiote in at CM battling with Fellaini that would be a battle and a half with the destroyer coming out on top of course.
The balancing act is one of the pressures of achieving European football and is one that I think our squad are capable of, we bleed some youngsters into the first team for the first few European games, if we can qualify to the next stages with a squad based mostly on fringe and young players then that would save our first XI for the PL.
Every team, be that in CL or EL has to try and cope with that, hell Fulham got to the final in 2010! So why couldn’t we!? 😀

I’m on my IPad so it takes to longer to Type.
So I probably start typing 5minutes before I post if its a long post.
Anyway, Cisse hasn’t looked up to speed but should’ve scored against Chelsea and Villa if it wasn’t for a lucky save by Guzan.
I thinks it’s party because he doesn’t look fit and partly because him and Ba don’t play well together.
In my previous post before I said we NEED to play a 5 man midfield because Eveton are very good at overrunning teams, especially at Goodison
I just don’t want to be let down on Monday evening looking at our team with the same old 4-4-2.

I actually think that we’ll more than likely play 4-4-2 on Monday, with Jonas on LW to try and alleviate pressure by carrying the ball out in his usual way, the trouble with playing Jonas on the wing is that he rarely provides anything in the sense of creativity for our strikers, which is perhaps why we look pretty toothless going forward when playing 4-4-2.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a midfield 3 of Jonas, Cabaye and Bigi (if Tiote is injured) with Marv LW and HBA RW but I admit that it is probably unlikely.
If we did play a 4-5-1 then I would give the nod to Cisse up front, purely because he scored for Senegal and will be confident and then save Ba for EL perhaps.

Frustrating isn’t it? 🙂
I don’t think any of us can understand why we play 4-4-2,but Pardew really needs to let go of his stubbornness, take the handcuffs off the players and let them play to their strengths,

I agree with the premise, but Pardew sees some merits in 4-4-2, after all we got some great results last season playing 4-4-2. Most notably the spanking of Man U at home last season was a masterclass in how to play 4-4-2 properly.
But given how he says he wants to control the midfield then that would surely point to having a midfield three and bossing it from the centre which we haven’t seemed to do at all this season, but I am willing to wait and give AP a chance before criticising his tactical nous, he did win some sort of silly awards for being a half decent manager last season didn’t he? 😛
