Perch, Williamson And Marveaux All Start – Ba On Bench

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has made four changes to the side for tonight’s game at Goodison Park, and it looks like we will be playing in a 4-5-1 formation, and crowding the midfield.

Alan Pardew has sprung a little bit of a surprise by playing Jonas Gutierrez in central midfield partnering Yohan Cabaye and Vurnon Anita, and Sylvain Marveaux comes in on the left wing, and Newcastle will play with only one striker up front – Papiss Cisse – with Demba Ba dropping to the bench.

This seems a little bit of a defensive move, but is meant to keep Newcastle in the game tonight, and Ba and Cisse haven’t worked too well in a 4-4-2 formation so far this season.

Mike Williamson comes in for Colo in central defense and James Perch is at right back, with Ben Arfa and Marveaux the two wide men, and as expected Steve Harper starts in goal for the injured Tim Krul, with Rob Elliot on the bench.

We need something out of this game tonight, but it’s a surprise that Ba is the one left out, since he’s looked better than Papiss so far this season.

Shola Ameobi returns to the first team squad on the bench, after recovering from his hamstring strain and James Tavernier, Gael Bigirimana, Dan Gosling and Gabriel Obertan complete the bench.

Howay The Lads!!

Obviously not completely the same as pards. Fairly strong bench when you look at it. Few youngsters there but they’ve all got something to prove eh? Thought Sammy was back ey?

. . . as I was saying – I think that it is an attacking formation – Hatem behind Cisse, – that is difficult to defend against . Can’t wait – lets hope they get the service

I think this is the kind of formation that everyone been’s waiting for so far this season. I think AP was waiting for all his attacking players to be fit before playing this, as have 1 striker up front puts a lot of em and its not like we got loads of cover there, so I think AP was just protecting the strikers. Really looking forward to catching another glimpse of Marveaux and HBA in free roles in midfield could be very very exciting indeed!

    Btw its 4-2-3-1

    Hba-cabaye-marveux behind cisse.

For me its a great decsion from pardew cause imo this is our best formation. We only have 2 quality strikers and in 4 tornaments so its best to play with 1 upfront.
Ba wont be unhappy knowing that he will (99% sure) start on thursday.
Just think of this formation with our best players! Quality, hopefully it works out tonight so that pards sticks with it

so happy with that line-up, pretty much everything i wanted.

Opinion on Gosling as i noticed it was a topic. I think he should be sold for definite.,.a loan would suggest he has potential to come back and offer us something. He has nothing to offer a team pushing for top 6 every year.

Like the line up, close to what I would have picked. Maybe would have preferred ba to cisse and oba instead of Marv but not going to object.

Now the blog has been calling for this formation since last season. Let’s see it in effect.

Cisse had a fantastic game against Ivory coast and he also scored a great goal and is a better finisher than Ba. This is a good move by Pardew.

agree. i think the best line-up would have been this but with ba in cisse’s place (deservedly so) and bigi in place of guti, though that one’s more of a toss-up. as long as guti is CDM, which it looks like it is, i think we’ll be fine but there’s no doubt bigi is better both at tackling and passing. guti will be a workhorse as usual so not too bothered.

am by cisse over ba though. ba is the more all-rounder and can incorporate the midfield more when we’re not getting much possession. cisse’s hold-up play is non existent and unless we’re getting balls in to him from the wings or behind the defence, which we haven’t all season, cisse’s contribution is zero

anyway, still a strong team. glad marvs is getting his more than deserved first start of the season. should be a fairly even game pending willo and guti do their jobs. not worried at all about the rest

I like the look of the front six, however the back five are a bit of a worry. If we lost tonight people will probably say 4:3:3 does not work but that back five consists of three back up players so do not judge too soon

Marveaux and Ben Arfa on the wings with Cabaye infront of Anita and Jonas.
    Go TOON!!
(I guess I will have to admit that I am a complete waste of a manager if this does not work)

there was an air or disgruntlement in my last post

must clarify that while i would tweak the line-up here and there, i’m really pleased (assuming it’s more of a 4231 v 451) that we’re playing our strongest formation and hopefully this is not just a tell-all for away games. this should be our template both home and away, europa or league. if this is the attacking philosophy we want to go by, we have to instill it on a regular basis with both the first, reserve, and academy teams
