Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has made four changes to the side for tonight’s game at Goodison Park, and it looks like we will be playing in a 4-5-1 formation, and crowding the midfield.
Alan Pardew has sprung a little bit of a surprise by playing Jonas Gutierrez in central midfield partnering Yohan Cabaye and Vurnon Anita, and Sylvain Marveaux comes in on the left wing, and Newcastle will play with only one striker up front – Papiss Cisse – with Demba Ba dropping to the bench.
This seems a little bit of a defensive move, but is meant to keep Newcastle in the game tonight, and Ba and Cisse haven’t worked too well in a 4-4-2 formation so far this season.
Mike Williamson comes in for Colo in central defense and James Perch is at right back, with Ben Arfa and Marveaux the two wide men, and as expected Steve Harper starts in goal for the injured Tim Krul, with Rob Elliot on the bench.
We need something out of this game tonight, but it’s a surprise that Ba is the one left out, since he’s looked better than Papiss so far this season.
Shola Ameobi returns to the first team squad on the bench, after recovering from his hamstring strain and James Tavernier, Gael Bigirimana, Dan Gosling and Gabriel Obertan complete the bench.

Comment #482Tactically it was a great second half for Carver and Pards, just some shoddy defending during Everton’s 2nd goal.
They may have had 2 goals denied but that’s what they get for relying on knock ins and millimeter live calls

Comment #483If you think about it though we were denied a goal almost as much as Everton as the ball wasn’t judged to be across the line and so we should have been allowed to keep playing.

I agree 100%, that stoppage made no sense whatsoever, unless the ref somehow though Everton’s goal should have stood and was bailing them out.

Comment #487Wow, great second half, but lot of help from the ref, not going down with 4-2.
What we could learn from this match: Ba is in better form, then Cissé, Anita is better RB then Perch.

Comment #488I don’t think we’ve turned up in the first half once this season. If we could solve it we would be smashing teams. Cracking ball from willo, I know people moaned about the odd hoof but how many times did Anita do it. Great knock on from shola, he’s so usefulfor that. Just hope the hairdryer effect hangs on till next match.

Comment #489better 2nd half and a relief to come away with a point. Gotta get better and put in a full 90 mins. We were lucky today as Everton could av run away with it first half and two goals were disallowed. On reflection I’m plsed with the point. Next game and hopefully a better 90 mins. Btw great assist by Ameobi! Possible partnership with Ba?

And Perch is a better DM than Anita, on that showing.

Comment #491That was the game and performance we needed. Add Tiote, Colo, and Krul to the mix and we have lift off.

Comment #492That is why Ba should star most games. At the moment he is more in form than cisse. Give it a rest knocking Ben arfa, he was wasteful tonight but how many times has he saved our blushes now.

Comment #494well the second half to this game has made me change what i think is to blame for that villa draw.
it is not the players that has been the problem for us but the fact we did little going forward which was the exact same problem in the first half today, but the second half we knew we were a goal down so change our formation from 4-5-1 to a 4-3-3 knowing that we needed to score a goal then we starting to sit back again until everton scored after which we again scored.
so the answer to why we look poor at times is pardew has had the team playing too defencive.

Comment #498Once again, Williamson has cost us the game. Thought we deserved to lose today. We we’re poor in the first half and were lucky in the second. Marveaux is better on the left wing. Perch is better at centre back or defensive midfield. We missed Raylor today.

Comment #499People saying Ba should have started consider Cisse’s form in Africa and the fact he needs a chance to get on the score sheet. I don’t think he’s scored in the PL yet.

Comment #507Glad to see that no one can blame Williamson for this as he had nothing to do with either of everton’s goals.
Harps was a bit slow for the first like. We were terrible in the first half but evenly matched in the second. Marv did absolutely nothing tonight. People talking about gosling needing to prove himself, well so does Marv for me.
Well done ba for getting yourself into our history books.

Comment #510Gary Neville confirmed that Williamson was at fault for the first goal as he drifted out of position. It was also Williamson’s fault for their second goal as he was nowhere near Anichebe. Williamson road his luck with their disallowed goal as he should’ve made a greater attempt to clear the ball off the line.
Marveaux’s a great player, but we didn’t utilise him enough today. Marveaux is our best player in terms of keeping possession and creating chances.

Comment #512Gary Neville did a great piece on the disallowed goals, they really were blink-of-the-eye, split second decisions.
The 2nd one (the ball clearing the goal line) was especially unusual because Williamson cleared it before it hit the ground. Normally with those goals we see the ball bounce off the grass behind the line which helps the call tremendously.

Comment #513Absolute tosh. It was Taylor who was on anichebe and gave him half a yard and perch who lost baines, who once given the space always looked like scoring.
Absolute tosh.
