News today that both Senegal strikers Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse did not make the trip today to the island of Madeira, for the Europa League game tomorrow night against Maritimo.
Adam Campbell - young striker is on the plane to Portugal today
But 17 year-old Adam Campbell is on the plane, and he could see himself pick up another senior appearance for the club tomorrow night.
Adam scored one of Newcastle’s goals in yesterday 2-2 draw with Sunderland, and 20 year-old Brad Inman got the other goal, and that’s five goals the Australian has scored for the Newcastle U21 side this season.
Other players on the plane today include veteran goalkeeper Steve Harper, Shola Ameobi, Mehdi Abeid, Shane Ferguson, Sammy Ameobi and Steven Taylor.
Sammy tweeted it’s the best plan he’s ever been on (how many has he been on?), and Adam Campbell tweeted last night he scored one, but should have had three goals for Newcastle against Sunderland yesterday.
Shola is almost certain to start up front for Newcastle tomorrow night, after recovering from his hamstring strain, and setting up Demba Ba’s dramatic last ditch equalizer at Goodison Park on Monday night.
It would also be good to see Mehdi Abeid get a chance tomorrow night, and he’s hardly figured in the 18 man first team squads this season at all, and needs an opportunity to show what he can do in a Newcastle shirt.
We’ll take a guess at the side for tomorrow night later today or early tomorrow morning – what do you think it will be?

S’land played a strong team last night,
Vaughan – Welsh int.
Saha – former french
Ji – Korean u21 if not full
Wickham – u21 int.
Kilgalon – former u21 int.
But we still picked up a 2-2 draw.
I would have liked Inman to have gone. He has 5 goals this season from right wing. I would suggest he has a future at the club because non stikers who can score regularly are very valuble to any team.

Ed- If only everyone had your Joie de Vivre. These are indeed exciting times for all Toon fans it’s just that far too many haven’t yet realised it yet.
Bollance- and Fergie was left back and Gosling an emergency CB when Richardson was injured. Inman was the pick for me.

repost from previous thread:
I have said before that i’m very happy and positive with the signings made, people don’t really want to acknowledge the fact that we made 3 substantial signings that are fundamental to the growth and sustainability of the squad in Amal, Good and Bigi, with the wealth of talent we have coming through big purchases would hinder their development and path to the first team, there is already uproar in the thought of Abied going on loan but he is possibly the next one to break though but IMO he is being held back due to the impact Bigi has made in such a short space of time, this kid will be immense and dare i say it, is a ready made replacement for Tiote when he goes to the ACON (with any luck it’s not the 2 Dembas). If anything Monday night at Everton taught us that a few players have progressed even further from last season, most notably Perch with his new found confidence he looked very assured on the ball when just 2 seasons ago he looked like a pub team player! That is all and thanks for listening… TTBAWA

Yes it would appear we are short on numbers at the back for the u21 team.
We have Street and Kitchen out injured and it would appear the u18s are not up to standard yet.
Look out for Kitchen, seen him play. Still developing physically but defends well like Saylor. Everyone talks about Streete but this guy has potential too.

The fact they have only an 5k capacity stadium and they average around 3-4k per game.
What is that, about a league 2 number?
But they came 5th in the portugues league, not bad with teams like, Porto, Benfica, Sporting and Braga. So they are the best lesser known team.
I still feel we will have too much for them as ou defense will be strong and we will have players like Marv, Shola (lots of experience in Europe) and even Fergie or Sami may shine on this stage.
12 jawballsaswallwell // Sep 19, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Newcastle is a big club with a massive and passionate fan base, any idea that we just make hay while the sun shines is underselling the club. We are not punching above our weight, we have a side we deserve and that has not always been the case and there is potentially much more to come and the management of the club is surely not above a little healthy criticism along the way.

Even with the youngsters we should be smashing this 3-0 easily, they’re virtual unknowns on an island in the middle of nowhere.
Even if they did finish 5th in the Portuguese league I still think that only translates to mid table championship at best.
I would start sami, campbell and vukic if it were up to me. I would rather put a plant pot on the pitch than have marveux unless he has miraculously had a change of form since his last game.

I do like your parallel with Maritimo and “they’re virtual unknowns on an island in the middle of nowhere.
Even if they did finish 5th in the Portuguese league I still think that only translates to mid table championship at best.”
There is a team that is made up of players that came from almost unheard of clubs and as youngsters a huge number of them were so poor that they did not even have the money for boots and such, but they persevered and worked their way up to playing for their local clubs they now play for BRASIL.
I think what I am trying to say is, to write them off so simply is something I really hope the club DOES NOT DO.
20 Grafton83 // Sep 19, 2012 at 1:02 PM
@Cupidstunt
Don’t get me wrong that would not be in my team talk if I were manager. They need to take the fixture seriously ofcourse. I’m just pointing out they are rubbish on paper. I think they’ll be worse than Atrimitos and even Obertan looked good against them.

I understand where you are coming from but it is the simplest mistake to make in underestimating an opponent, Atrimitos were not greatest but they did have one good break against us and the ball was in the net and we came away with a draw.
I may well be so far off the point that I am in another post code but I think they will have a little more technical ability about them I think the Portuguese play along the lines of the Spanish so we may have a harder game than you anticipate.
Although I will be more than happy if your categorising proves correct.

It would make sense city being interested in colo. they don’t care about buying for future and colo was in team of the season in the prem.
They bought maicon. Not sure he is a top top full back. Ok, he is Brazilian pedigree but from what I have seen of him for city I am not sure yet.
Anyway we kept colo. good move as he is a top class defender and we need him so the team succeeds again this season

Back! Bloomin’ ibiza internet.
Really looking forward to the game tomorrow.
As for someone’s comment early about the “pep talk” (let’s get in to EL, then play the B team and not care if we lose)….Bit silly, don’t you think?
From what I understand the money for being in the EL is next to nothing. So Ashley was never going to fund the additional players to compete in this competition. PL has to be out priority, unless you’re saying 100% you think we’ll win the EL tournament (there is an outside chance, but we know how these things go, even with a full strength team)…it’s too much of a risk.
Build slowly, keep out top 6 status (which get’s us Europe again), attracting more players and pushing to improve the overall squad and efficiently compete across the board.
This is my opinion only, but I do find some of your expectations to be completely unrealistic….and this is coming from an optimist.
So, anything new going down?
26 Hebburn Mag // Sep 19, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Im not saying that this story is untrue but didnt Campbell play last night at SJP for the reserves? Surely Pardew wouldnt fly him out to play tonight? 2 games in 2 days would be tough for any professional footballer never mind a young 17 year old. If he has gone with the squad I think its probably to show him where he could be playing if he keeps up his hard work.

29 Grafton83 // Sep 19, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Ibiza I think you mean keep our top 6 status but your comment reads as if we should keep out of top 6.
If we do finish in any kind of Euro qualifying position I will be over the moon. I don’t see the point in being an optimist or a pessimist when it comes to predicting our final finishing position so I’ll just call it as I see it: 7th-8th.
30 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Sep 19, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Hebburn, It’s tomorrow and I would imagine he’ll start on the bench, but give us an option of pace for the last 15-20 minutes. I would imagine an Ameobi double feature….oh yeah.

Yes – it should have read “keep OUR top 6 status”.

…only the goalkeeper is needed to start on Sunday, seems ideal, and strong enough seeing as this Maritimo seem about as good as a Championship team (and not a promotion candidate one either)

Sorry lads I meant tomorrow not tonight, this weeks going to way to slow!
Like I say though I cant see him playing but id love to see him get even 10-15 minutes at the end of the game. The way it looks like Pardew is playing it is that he going to put a fairly strong team out against the opposition in the away legs with the addition of a few youngsters but when we play the home legs hes going to go all out with a number of first team regulars. Either way aslong as we win I dont mind!

I think i may need to revise my earlier comments of Maritimo being easy because they’re a bunch of unknowns on an island in the middle of nowhere.
Bet365 has them as evens for the win whilst its 2-1 for a draw or away win. That doesn’t fill me with any confidence. Not that they always get it right but they must have something about them. They haven’t lost all season either.
I will ponder these odds for a few hours before deciding to put all my money on campbell to score last and a toon win.

From previous…..Ian, I honestly dont know what you’re talking about ? Myself and Ibiza have discussed this many times and respect each others opinion and can see validity in both. I think the Toon can have a decent season, but feel and felt we needed investment. Its not all doom here at all, although I admit to thinking we’d be hammered by Everton. Wassap man ? In fairness I said I wouldnt talk about my annoyance again so didnt mean to bring it up again, was only responding to what you ahd said. There are lots of reasons to be cheerful about NUFC right now , and i’m happy about that. Love the reserves, the scouting and the fact that we dont buy dross, although I’be never been convinced by either Gosling or Obertan. Hope to be proved wrong. Maritimo could be tricky. I played in a match on holiday in Portugal and even the locals have fine skills. It was the Brits and Paddies v the Locals. They won, although I moved on to the portuguese side at half time, clearly making a difference to the outcome!

Alternatively look at shares.
NUFC related, Sports Direct shares have risen 25% in the past 6 months, i beleive due to a successful olympics and the fact the company makes a good profit.
Despite the shops looking a bit chaotic at times the business is run to make big money with staff incentivised to make money.
Hopefully, in fact we are starting to realise, that is how NUFC is being run.
Making profit is the new competition with new FFP coming in. Without profit teams can not strengthen their squads.
If you look at the Prem the top team is Man U. They have spent a fortune but only because they have made a lot too. They have bought the best players, yes.. even Paul Scholes was bought from Oldham i believe??
You are more likely to win with better players and that is why they win. Against us last season we were lucky to pick up a point because Man U had us on the rack for most of the game. That is how they win most of the time. When they dont they ususally outplay the opposition.
Anyway, we are trying to get a better sqaud on a bootleg which is working to date and even making a profit too.

Munster-LOL. I don’t know where to start . My point about when your right means the team suffers. You say your ceasing your criticism of players but mention Obertan and Gosling with the reminder of your long term misgivings. It’s hard to say at what point Gosling will have failed even if he is released on a free contract. The guy had a cruciate
which has finished many a players career. I watched him last night and he looked a lot fitter and has lost some weight. He is a trier. On Obertan the only thing he lacks is confidence which isn’t helped by fans wanting him to do play poorly so they can say I told you so.
On Ibiza being the conductor of the orchestra he has to adhere to political correctness. Don’t believe what their saying about you
and support the Toon warts and all. To hell with the Johnny come latleys. If your not watching the game don’t come on here for the crack because with all the Minnie moaners and throwing dummies out of prams even when we’re winning you’ll feel that we’re losing. Cheers mate.

i dont think any fan wants players to fail, if they did it would be wanting the club to fail, if so it would mean they are not fans. you also make a point about Obertan, i suggest you watch Obertans ball watching, he wanders about the pitch as if he was in a trance the game goes on around him at times and he seems to fail to pick opponents up and stand in free space when the opponents have the ball. i would take a stab and say obertans problems are a lack of concentration as when he wants he can up his game so suggests its not because he useless, but needs to focus on the game more.

Although with Perch expected to start RB for Sunday’s game, that would mean three games in a week for someone who has just come back to fitness. Maybe Gosling for Perch?
Predicting a 1-1.

carryingcoals – Campbell WILL be on the bench, pretty much fact. He travelled today, and is the only natural ST in our team other than Shola.
This squad if anyone missed it…
Mehdi Abeid, Romain Amalfitano, Sammy Ameobi, Shola Ameobi, Vurnon Anita, Gael Bigirimana, Adam Campbell, Rob Elliot, Shane Ferguson, Dan Gosling, Steve Harper, Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan, James Perch, Davide Santon, James Tavernier, Steven Taylor, Haris Vuckic, Mike Williamson

I see what you mean, but there are only 7 places on the bench. You have listed 19 players. Who will be the one that travels but isn’t on the bench then? I assume it would be Campbell as he was the last to be called in to the squad.

Ian, if you are going to criticise what I say, at least be accurate. When I said i would stop giving out, i was referring to MA’s lack of spend. You probably have defended this constantly and no doubt asked for people to be patient, just like i was. We wasted a chance to build in the summer – end of. We will hopefully do so half way through the season. Re the players, I dont rate Gosling and Obertan has more potential but has done little. I would never boo a player on the pitch, but any fan has the right to voice an opinion o a player on this forum. I’ve supported the Toon, from Ireland, since the mid / late 70s and have travelled all over England to watch them when I lived there. Spare me the lecture until you can articulate your point properly. I’m still optimistic for the season but a repeat of last season may be a lot to ask without further strengthening the first team.

I think you’ll find the surge in share value is down to speculation that MA will take over Whelan’s outfit JJB Sports which is on the verge of receivership and closing shops faster than the unwashed will go down the table…
Anybody know how good Inman is ? What style of player is he ? Is he a true RW or more an IR and how come he’s scoring so many goals from the flanking positions. Is he good with both feet ?
Any body got any ideas on how long he might take to break into the 1st 11 ?
83 toonLYF // Sep 19, 2012 at 6:10 PM
Carryingcoals – also understood point, but they’re 10 players capable of playing comfortably in midfield on that list, i think one of them will miss out. Would like to think it was Gosling as i don’t want to see him in a Newcastle shirt again, but it’ll probably be either Abeid, Vuckic or Sammy. Sammy is still not 100% and played for the first time against Sunderland Reserves yesterday, i have a feeling he will be rested and was only brought over to integrate him back into the active squad, and also incase of Pre-Match injury/illness.

Ok, I see what you mean. Good point. Sammy hasn’t been involved for a long while yeah.
I actually think Vuckic will start as he didn’t play for the reserves and he played well against Atromitos.
Gosling hasn’t performed for us at all. He was class at Everton and I was surprised we got him, I thought it was quite the coup actually. But since this injury he seems to have lost that dynamic edge about his play. I haven’t seen anything decent of him.
I still think Campbell will miss out and it will be more about bringing him in to this group of players. If not him then maybe Abeid then, as you say a lot of people can play in midfield. I guess we’ll see!

I was trying to get a weeks holiday in Madeira to coincide with the game but the wife claimed it was sold out but she did look up Madeira on Google earth and noticed how close the airport in to the Atlantic and i think that might of been why the holidays were sold out, at one end of the runway theirs only enough space to park a 767 between the end of runway and start of the ocean. Brussels is unlikely even with a 29,300 capacity. that leaves Bordeaux as the only chance to get too before the knockouts supposing we qualify.

Munster @80- I have articulated the point of needing to buy into the project on countless occasions with you. I thought we had moved on.
The time horizons on transfer spending are yours. You doubtless
will recall Carr making the point on getting or not getting the players @last window. That’s not to say that players will not be signed at optimum time. I have likened us in the early stages of the Arsenal project and you can see definite comparisons on the youth development side. I have not supported the club for as long as you but I am well versed in the traditions and practices of the football club.
Forgive me for listening to my father and my late grandfather who believes(d) that the club is being run on professional grounds for the first time in their lifetimes. The relative success achieved under Joe Harvey,Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby were achieved despite the lack of support in the Boardroom. Sorry that you feel I am lecturing you but I see the Ashley development programmwe as being a realistic attempt to develop the club on all fronts. Rome was not built in a day
and I don’t see that much difference between us it’s merely a timing issue. I apologise for not articulating the point initially. I have made a note to do better when next we exchange.

On joining the Toon his confidence was at rock bottom largely through Ferguson’s mismanagement of him. His star showings have been few I recall a goal he scored late on at Blackburn. I would hate for him to move onto say Swansea and become a star-LOL. Pardew is a good man manager let’s give him this season and Europa experience before taking a view.

Bam@89 – he has missed a year out of the last 18 months of football . He was outstanding against Braga and Hartlepools. He was played out of position on the right in an alien role at a time when he is trying to establish a position in the team. He has a lot to offer not least an ability to cross the ball something we consistently lack. I would look to him to do well in the Europa. Let’s wait and see.
103 Transfer Sage // Sep 19, 2012 at 7:05 PM
Marvoux is an attacking winger who was asked to do a defensive job. He has barely played competitive football for he beat part of a year.

105 Carryingcoals // Sep 19, 2012 at 7:11 PM
I agree with transfer sage ^
Ben Arfa isn’t great at tracking back, we knew Baines would maraud forward. Ben Arfa was moved to the other side against Hibbert who he could expose. The central role was a toss up behind Cisse and Ba, Pards went with Cisse. If you’re looking to get a goal you would go with Papiss to be fair. Cisse hasn’t played well yet this season and unless he can form a partnership and play with Ba then the two will be rotated.
Essentially Pardew gambled and it didn’t pay off, he ammended this at HT putting Demba on.
Marveaux has been out for a long time but is a promising player, let’s not get on his back like we do with Obertan and give the lad a chance!
Ba’s agent has said his bit but the press made a mountain out of a molehill. I wouldn’t be surprised if both Ba and Cisse score against Norwich if they both play.

Munster makes a good point.
Nobody wanted silly money spent. We probably all thought 12 million for de Jong and 13 for Carroll was more than expected.
What will have confused a lot of us is that players like michu, buttner and Kevin mirallas all were players in positions we needed and all went for a relatively small fee.
Maybe the club didn’t want them but they would have really improved the squad.
Also people might have accepted the youth policy better of the club ensured we got category 1 academy status like boro and sunderland.

My only reason I have for dropping Jonas is tactics related.
I think the team is always set up too defensive despite what pardew said Monday night.
We look like the main aim is to keep it tight. Players like Jonas offer so much defensively but when he is the winger in a 442 it limits is going forward.
But I can’t knock him if they plan to use him defensively.

I understand the reasoning behind dropping jonas but my point was that realisticly, and keeping in mind he has missed 18 months of football, we cant really justify dropping one of our hardest working most underatted players who offers alot including what seems to be great leadership to the team especially with the likes of tiote and colo missing and is also our vice captain, dropping him because we assume that he will dramatically change the way we play, the coaching staff obviously aren’t confident enough yet and thats good enough for me

We cant be to hard on marveaux, he isnt a defensive type player at all, our restraining tactics done nothing for him, lets give the lad a real chance playing at home, you will see a different player in my view,
Got to say though jonas is a square peg on a round hole, grafts of course but go me he should not ever play in midfield, he just looks lost to me and runs in circles, zorry in all that cos he is a 100 per centa, but we can get a betta balance with more fluidity if he was not in the starting eleven.

Saw him that night in what was called Sea night club, he was on his own but i bottled speaking to him. and yes i am still disappointed to this day.
Getting back on track,
1) captain on monday – brings int. class experience to the team
2) Always gives everything which is a lot most games.
3) doubles up with fullback so fortifies one side
4) we attack on the other flank – with HBA
5) the other flank (with HBA) has Tiote who slots in between Saylor and Simo when personel present.
6) Guti is a self proclaimed 7/10 every game man
7) he has complete trust of Pards
8) old compared to rest of squad but given 3 year extention – speaks volumes!!
9) stong but also a sack of potatoes when needed – tactically wins free kicks and relieves pressure.

Think Jonas will play most games.
Pardew is quite defensive in the team set up. People have to be disciplined.
Every time last year we got on a role and started opening up we managed to get a spanking not long after. Spurs and Wigan really caught us out.
Think this has made pards a little careful when giving players attacking instructions

Big Pappa Cissé
I see what you mean, I really do. For a winger he needs to do more. But at the same time, what are our alternatives? He’s probably the best we’ve got.
But I’ve never known a winger to be so defensive. Marveaux should really be looking to oust him this season but at present he seems far from doing so.
We could play :
Tiote Cabaye Anita
HBA Cisse Ba
- that would leave jonas out. But then again apparently Ba wont play on the left and Anita hasnt looked great in CM yet!
Its difficult. I mean I personally would use him in the team but not as a winger. Could he play at LB meaning we could put Santon RB… I bet Santon and Ben ARfa could form a brilliant understanding on the right as SImpson doesnt click with HBA at all.
I remember when Nobby moved to right back and although by then he wasnt the quickest he was still effective. Now im not saying Jonas is as good a player as Solano was – he isnt – however hes played LB for Argentina and will always put a shift in for you.
At the end of the day we can all speculate and come up with solutions but Pardew seems to keep the shape quite similar and he’s unlikely to drastically change things.

I never said to drop him all the time. Just think sometimes we don’t need his defensive nature and against lesser teams can have more attacking players on the pitch.
I think the biggest thing I have noticed this season is how much better we look when we have two attacking full backs in Anita and santon on the pitch.
Simmo and perch do a job but don’t get forward as mixh so invite pressure on themselves.

Having said that – the academy should be only one prong of a wide ranging approach to making NUFC compete at the very top. In my experiences, the clubs with the best academies have never really been top clubs.

Solano…Good point there about the teams with the best renowned academies, they are hardly ever the “best” teams going. Arsenal are probably the current best and for now seem a good target for us to achieve. Although over time, I can see frustration building with fans and not winning anything, but being consecutively near the top isn’t a bad thing at all and from where we’ve been recently surely must be seen as progress.
A lot of the opinion surely has to come down to whether you think financial fair play rules will have a major effect on the big teams. If it doesn’t, then it’s clear money will need to be spent to break in to the exclusive club and not just sit on the outskirts. Only time will tell.

I understand Ba’s frustration.
He is a centre forward and therefore wants to play there.
He could move to a team just below us and start there most games or move to a higher level team and play a bit less but Maybe win a trophy. (ie Chelsea as they only really have Torres)
Alcoa he might not care about money or trophies and just want to play every week as a centre forward.
Can’t blame somebody fr wanting to play every week in their desired position.

Fair point. When we play at home to Norwich we could gamble and go 3 up top. The difference between the lower teams and higher teams in my opinion is time in possession.
Norwich will make 3-4 passes and lose it which may mean we win back possesion in the middle 3rd of the pitch. This means we will be able to get the ball quicker to our front 3 who can all beat a man and make intelligent runs to set up chances.
The point is against a better team like Everton on Monday we won back possesion in the 3rd next to our goal which makes it harder for us to get the ball to our attackers.
We too have a limit as to how long we hold onto possession so it is important where we win it back and on monday night we were pinned back and as a result when we won the ball we hoofed it and most of the time to nobody.
We would therefore outgun teams like norwich

Jonas being dropped? Of course there will be some games where he’ll need to be rested. I agree that at home and against perceived lesser opponents, we should perhaps be more attacking and utilise the players we do have at our disposal and try and destroy some teams….that has been somewhat missing of late.

Sage…I agree almost wholeheartedly…..Man U’s is debatable though, for the records show a none too great record in poaching other club’s youngsters then claiming them to be their own!
When I was a boy (cue Worther’s Original music) ….Ipswich and Southampton had a blatant and cynical policy of recruiting many, many youngsters from this region…some came good….many fell by the wayside…and it was felt that they were signed up on schoolboy forms just to prevent other clubs signing them, rather than any real interest in nurturing their talents.
At least with localised recruitment, we will have the chance to tap in to our God-given wealth of footballing talent…with only the germ carriers of Wearyside and the Worther’s Original Abusers of Teeside as competition!

In my opinion the better the team the harder it is to bring youth through. The year we were in the Championship was the year i thought we would bring some players through.
What did we have at our disposal?
Krul – who was behind harper
Vuckic – only 17 but massive reputation. He came on in the game against Leicester in the game Hughton used to say to Ashley we need more signings by playing lots of youngsters. But Haris got injured.
Donaldson – Played Eng u19 but never made the breakthrough
Ranger – should be a first teamer, waster!
Kadar – Played well and rated by bobby moncur but something happened. I think his agent asked for mega bucks and so we told him where to go.
Ben Tozer – Wise signing never close to 1st team
Phil Airey – only 17-18 but tipped for big things. I think he had a temprement problem.
They were the players and none came through that year. But the youth set was in teansition then. That year we had a cracking u18 team.
The point is that for players to break through they need to be really good compared to a championship side who could bring through a good player. For that reason alone Wenger is a genius. To bring through the numbers he does is incredible.
Pardew may be our Wenger. The fact we signed 3 for the development squad and only 1 first teamer highlights the clubs change of emphasis.
We will see players coming through. The fact we are grade two means the players coming through will be Geordies – something the fans love!!

Bollance@165…an interesting point….but ffs I’m cracking on! Another 40 years and I’ll be fertilising the pitch! Can we have some jam today? Please!
A good example of a middle way was the first couple years under KK….Ossie’s team were brimming with talent and we were staring Division 3 in the face. There was the Appleby’s, Thompson, Howey,Clark and Watson….when KK arrived and transformed the club, the top cream still came through and contributed to our success, playing alonside ‘bought in’ talent. I
In 1996-7, no doubt a huge error occurred when reserves team was dropped…but for 3 short years we had the club firing on all cylinders and on all fronts.
With the right vision and investment (across the board) we could achieve great things and surpass what has gone before.

173 Carryingcoals // Sep 19, 2012 at 8:45 PM
Joe
Well it is a nuisance, isn’t it? It’s not exactly the Champions League. Look at the stature of the club and where we are at – the Premier League has to be the priority.
The staff at the club will be aiming to win the competition, however AT PRESENT its a huge nuisance. We have so many injuries already and playing Thursday before weekend Premier League games has adverse effects on our chances of winning the league games. Look at Stoke as an example. We want to get through this group and rest key players so they aren’t risked for the league.
It’s all about the stature of our club and where we currently are. If we make the Quarter final stage for example, it will not be a nuisance. We will be excited to say the least. We will enjoy the group and get behind the team and get to see some promising youngsters whilst allowing our fringe players to prove their worth.
Surely you can see why we are all putting up second string 11s. Playing Cabaye, Jonas, Ba etc in this game would be a mistake.

bollance@133— Sorry mate, just been drooling over Oscar skills and finishing. On Inman hope it isn’t a case of Pardew not rating him. He’s been around for years but still only 20. For me he’s been the star for the reserves this season. Certainly done enough to be on plane . He’s quick and fit again and seems to have developed a change gear. Very confident and good technically maybe being saved for Norwich .
Good finisher and maybe initially an introduction as impact player in last 20 minutes. Mind you I thought Tamas Kadar could play and would be our CB for the next decade. That said I know that Beardsley and Donachie rate him highly. Certainly he merits a Europa slot ahead of Campbell who’s had two quiet games Friday and last night.

Excellent point.
KK philosophy was that if he needed a new player he went to Hall or Shepard and they clicked their finger, no transfer window those days. If they did not then KK went in a huff, apparently??
There is an argument for this idea (i do not agree with it!!). If we bring players through there will certainy be a transition period. The team will be weakened while this player gains experience. eg Tav out of position in Euro which cost us a goal.
That is why Wenger is a genius. He has maintained CL football and brought players through. The board love Wenger.
There has been a knock on affect that decision that KK made as we lost a generation of players – is that correct?
But it would appear the acamdey is now in good shape except for not gaining grade 1 meaning we can not bring in players from other areas. We now have to sole rely on Geordies – is it 10 or 50 mile radius of SJP?
The county which has produced the most Prem players is Durham so as long as the area includes durham we will be ok

I was saying on my blog I think it’ll be between Harper, Taylor and Shola. Personally I wouldn’t give it to Harper as he won’t be in the team when Krul returns and I don’t like the idea of a keepers being the captain anyway.
I do think he’ll go with Shola because he’s often spoken highly of him etc.

Thanks for update. I see Oscar has scored two. 2-1 to chelsea.
I beleive that the u21 league is for scouts in the lower leagues to look for loan players.
This gives us good feedback on players. If we have a player who is in demand from lower division teams he clearly has good attributes.
We cleared out 10 youth players. Why? I think the feedback was not very good so we let them go. It gives players like Campbell a route to the first team.
Now we have kept the cream. The players who will go out on loan, like Tav did and if they do well like Tav they will play cup games like Tav will tomorrow.

I couldn’t agree more that I love Jonas, and that we need his spirit and will-to-win on the pitch, but that he just doesn’t create enough in the offensive third for a club aspiring to be in the top 4-6.
With our inability to land Debuchy this summer, I’d really like to see Santon at RB and Jonas at LB for a good run of games. I think we’d give up very little if anything defensively, and could add quite a bit going forward.
Further, if/when we set up in a 4-2-3-1, we will need quality overlapping runs and service from our FBs. Danny Simpson, god bless him, will NEVER give us this.

In the past, when attending many away games and supporting the Toon – when we were considered to be big boys in the top 4….the most common and cutting criticism was always “You’ve won fcuk all”….I would sacrifice a hell of a lot to see the club actually win some silverware in my lifetime and think a temporary blip in League form would be just that….temporary. I completely get what you’re saying mate, but I think we are approaching it the right way. If we put our first 11 out for every one of these group games I think its impractical. Once we are clear I would love us to give it our best shot. If we won this competition it would be unbelievable, hell if we won the league cup it would be insane.
I simply don’t think it’s necessary to play our full strength side now and with injuries amounting and us struggling to find our best form, these Thursday night games are a nuisance.

(Man City – having won last year – are making similar noises now I observe)
I’m not sure scrapping the reserves for 18months created a ‘lost generation’….we had one of the world’s most respected coaches at the club from 1999-2005..and failed to rectify the academy system. The point is….It’s not down to one man, it lies much deeper than that and is probably rooted in archaic coaches coaching archaic methods to kids of impressionable ages!

A few things to remember and consider about this years crop.
– We won the Nike cup a few seasons ago at u15 level so these are some of the players from that team. They might not have developed but they should be decent.
– The club has changed in its approach to youth. There are certain players being fast tracked. We have about 2-3 15 year olds playing at u18 level. Barlasa, Armstong and Woodman all 15.
Dont be too concerned. The coaches always put the emphasis on development rather than results.
Every player who excels in their age group is now being pushed up an age group or two. One of the Tottenham coaches realised that the players who were younger in each age group were more likely to come through.

Ian, in fairness I think Keegan got a pile of support from the ambitious ( at the time ) John Hall when we started to develop, and after that too, before things got silly. I would be a bit worried that we will flog two players for big dosh in the summer, reinvesting only a fraction of it, then hearing the doleful message from the club ( backed up by an annoyed and let down Pardew ) that agents eat the fees these days, whilst around us Everton etc are buying Mirellas’s etc …..as I said i respect much of what is going on at the club, but I dont like it being plastered in SD badges, and i dont like MA renaming an iconic ground under spoof investment pretences. I reckon MA would paint the place red if he thought it would make money. Sorry, I’m ranting. Lets hope we see some money spent in Jan, because it may in turn keep players like Cabaye, the likes of whom probably wont be uncovered again for 4mill.

KK acted on the hand he was delt. He is the most successful nufc manager in modern times.
In a way KK acted as if he had a billionaire owner. We had a huge revenue so we could afford to spend £13m one summer on Barton, Fedinand and Ginola. That was big money those days. It would not buy ronaldos socks these days though.
Man City had a great youth system but it is in tatters. What is there solution. Pump £200m into a project (which i beleive is fantastic for Manchester!). Even then though they will struggle to bring anyone through!

The lack of siging a striker will give Rodgers the excuse to keep him in the job for a while.. so he can well and truely take them down!

Bollance- I could never see why so many people rated Donaldson.
He was an England under! Player but could never see why.

Not sure either. He worked hard but seemed very light weight. At Gateshead now so hopefully he can help them come up this season.
Good question.
If Gateshead in championship, would we hate them?
I like gateshead. They have a good agreement with loan players over past few seasons

Well I am signing off.
229 jawballsaswallwell // Sep 19, 2012 at 9:50 PM
Another thing I noted about the Everton game was the solid performance of Willo. He is a more than reliable premiership centre back as long as he keeps his hands to himself in the box at set pieces, which I saw none of at Goodison. You don’t really want him in there against the very best sides, but against 90% of opposition he’s good cover. Played well.

Donaldson made his debt vs leicester as right back. As i suggested earlier. That was the game CH was trying to prove to MA we needed players

for all the people saying andy carrol should not be bought as we dont play hoofball or any of that jazz
NUFC Stats ?@NUFC_Stats
NUFC have played most long balls per game on average in the Premier League so far (79) – Everton are second (69)!! #nufc #efc

re europa and the club – I see where you’re coming from! I think we will progress.

He was quite rated at one point but I agree – too many ahead of him. What hope have you got when they can go and drop £50 mil on someone. Then again, if you’re good enough you’re old enough.
How is that McEachran doing at Boro?

Andy Carroll of course came through that year, well after xmas!

not sure how people on the other side of the water see it but for most people over here newcastle has always been very much the first team but a hell of a lot of us still follow gateshead, there would be no hatred from this side but like i say i have no idea what people from the newcastle side think
im only 23 but iv heard from older people iv worked with that years ago gateshead part of durham or something?? and seen as very much a rival, still get the odd bit of banter but these days i think most people think of us as tynsiders and so allies, thats my take on it anyway
see myself as a geordie as do the vast majority of gatesheaders
235 BelfastMagpie // Sep 19, 2012 at 9:56 PM
I was gonna say that the other day.lol
Easily the biggest long ball team in the league at the minute.
Or should I say most direct?
It’s bloddy hard to watch what ever you call it.

‘talk of the devil’ does not mean i think AC is the devil. I would have welcomed him back but for around £10m.

If you know that statistically you will lose the ball in the middle third of the pitch then it is better to gamble hoofing the ball into the final 3rd and hope you win it. This is fat sam tactics.
Not pleasant to watch but it is all about winning games.

AC was a geordie!
The fact we do send a player or two a season on loan has helped and the fact Bogie is manager also helps too.
They lost John Shaw who was their goal machine. Hope they do well

i think the newcastle – gateshead link helps both teams, newcastles young players get a chance to play competative games and gateshead get quality young players of the class that they would really struggle to attract to help them push on
241 jawballsaswallwell // Sep 19, 2012 at 10:05 PM
That long ball stat is an eye opener. My natural view of Newcastle is of a talented side looking to knock it around and mixing it up with the long ball. Maybe my tooncentric bias is coloring my view too much. Hope we rein that stat in.

Once we retain the ball better which will probably coincide with Tiote coming back into the team we will play more on the deck.

Definitely. like any good relationship, it works both ways.

Well dont get your hopes up for carpet footy when tiote returns, its a good while since we last strung half a dozen passes together on a regular basis ha ha.
We have done ok on the long ball though. Mind we should, if you watch the amount of punts colo, williamson and krul average per game.

i think this is a solid team which is capable of switching styles and playing more direct if need be, with a solid core and a good attacking prospect from midfield.
—————————-Harper————————–
Tavernier—-Williamson—–Taylor—-Ferguson
——————-Perch—-Bigirimana——————-
Obertan————–Vuckic—————–Marveaux

That would be my team too but Santon for Fergie – Fergie played all 90 mins of the reserve game on tues. Maybe he gets the last half hour?
100% agree with the side and setup otherwise.
252 toonLYF // Sep 19, 2012 at 10:51 PM
good point, hence the reason i didn’t include Gosling (not just due to my disliking for him, as i think otherwise Pardew probably would’ve included him)
I particularly like the formation as it can be easily adjusted to a 4-4-2 with Shola as target man obviously. Campbell is a useful option if that adjustment is made, coming on for Vuckic.
253 toonLYF // Sep 19, 2012 at 10:53 PM
but ey, what do we know, i was pleased with the starting line-up against Everton and look what happened. Guess we’ll just trust whatever Pardew goes with, and hope the lads get the job done.
254 thai-mag // Sep 19, 2012 at 10:53 PM

256 bollance // Sep 19, 2012 at 10:58 PM
As I said earlier
Demba will leave nufc in two years when his contract expires. Nobody will bid enough or take the risk to pay more then what we paid his agent £2m. He is going nowhere. Also no new contact. Why would we?
He has to play well to stay in the team and earn a new contract at the end of his current deal at a new club.
Once again nufc hold all the cards!
257 Tsunki // Sep 19, 2012 at 11:02 PM

thai-mag – i’m not predicting Pardew’s team, i’m just posting what i would like to see going by the squad that has travelled. It’s kind of what you do on football blogs…post your views on how things are, and how you would like them to be.

I think a few people might have an idea which players are fit, aside from Pardew!
and judging by your ignorance and spelling etc you have no idea how blogs work and this post has in fact been pointless on my behalf.
Hopefully the pointlessness of my irony hasn’t upset your delicate view of the world.

I agree mate, whichever 11 go out I think they’ll be capable of winning.

NUFC in a great position with Ba. With all the speculation surrounding our key players this summer, he would have been the one I’d have been least bothered about losing. If these are indeed tactics by him and his representatives, NUFC wont play ball. Ashely has made it clear he won’t be held ransom.
261 voodoo85 // Sep 19, 2012 at 11:16 PM
So Demba’s release clause is still there in January – was hoping it was just for this window just gone but appears not
“The situation with him is ongoing in terms of his contract, as there is that clause in there and it makes us vulnerable. That’s where we are – it’s still open in the next window.”
262 MacToon // Sep 19, 2012 at 11:28 PM
“that clause”
What clause, the one that was supposed to finish at the end of July? I don’t think he’ll see his current contract out but would be pleasantly surprised if he signed a new contract with us.
263 karasu // Sep 20, 2012 at 3:18 AM
I fear for us if this comes to fruition:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/1164759/alan-pardew:-demba-ba-could-leave-newcastle-in-january?cc=4716
Even Soccernet is picking up on it. He’s too much quality to let go, especially to direct competition in BPL. Furthermore, other clubs are now privy to us and won’t let any good strikers come to us for cheap. If this comes to fruition, we will be between a rock and a hard place.
264 karasu // Sep 20, 2012 at 3:22 AM
Oh and lets not kid ourselves. Campbell and Vuckic are not ready NOW. We can’t survive with only 1 good senior striker in the form of Papiss.
265 check the toastie // Sep 20, 2012 at 6:44 AM
Pretty clear Pardew would like a Cisse/Andy Carrol partnership up front long term, and i personally think they would be immense together, there is nothing worse for a squad than a player causing bother. Ba needs to remember were he has come from, cheeky cnut.
266 Ian Toon // Sep 20, 2012 at 7:52 AM
Bollance@@248and256- on under 18′s I took a simplistic view based on poor results which of course when it comes to players at this
level is of secondary importance. In the main it was smarting at having lost to the mackems last saturday. I note that a number are also representing England and not always available for us. Confirms the contention that were building from the grass roots.
On Ba- I agree with your conclusion. Hence Pardew is happy to be so transparent . It won’t stop it being debated ad nauseum. Enjoy your day.
