Elliot, Bigirimana, Gosling And Amalfitano All Start At Maritimo

Rob Elliot in goal, Gael Bigirimana, Dan Gosling and Romain Amalfitano all start against Maritimo tonight in the first group game of the Europa League.

And as expected young Haris Vuckic  makes the starting line-up in a mix of youth and experience for the Newcastle side.

It looks like Alan Pardew is playing a defensive 4-5-1 formation with Shola Ameobi the lone striker up front,  and maybe Haris Vuckic, who always has an eye for goal,  will be playing as the withdrawn striker, in the role Kevin Nolan used to take up at Newcastle.

The player who didn’t make the bench today is Vurnon Anita, and the news is that he has flown home to be with his girlfriend, who has gone into labor with their child, and it looks like Dan Gosling gets a chance with Vurnon not available.

Youngsters James Tavernier,  Shane Ferguson, Sammy Ameobi and Adam Campbell are on the bench, and we have to hope that Rob Elliot, making his first appearance of the season and only his second senior appearance in the Newcastle goal, has a good game.

The lads will be going for the win tonight, but it looks like it will be a tough game, and there are only three players – Williamson, Taylor and Santon – who will likely start the game on Sunday against Norwich City at home.

Teams:

Maritimo (4-5-1): Romain Salin; Briguel (c), Joao Guilherme, Valentin Roberge, Luis Olim; Rafael Miranda, Joao Luiz, Heldon, Simao, Sami; Danilo Dias
Substitutes: Wellington Lima, Joao Diogo, Marcio Rosario, Igor Rossi, Goncalo Abreu, Fidelis, Adilson

Newcastle United (4-5-1): Rob Elliot; James Perch, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor, Davide Santon; Gael Bigirimana, Dan Gosling, Gabriel Obertan, Haris Vuckic, Romain Amalfitano; Shola Ameobi (c)
Substitutes: Steve Harper, James Tavernier, Shane Ferguson, Mehdi Abeid, Sylvain Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Adam Campbell

The only worry I have is Elliot to be honest

Would rather we did not play Perch or Santon as they are going to be needed on Sunday I think if we can try get a goal or 2 we might take off some players

Would love to see Ferguson and Tavernier get some game time as well as Marveux as I imagine his confidence took a bit of a knock against Everton

ok, so gosling is almost 23, right? Abeid is 20 and I think it’s pretty communal on here that we all believe Abeid is ahead of Gosling.

Is it time to give up on Gosling as these little cameos where players like Abeid and Amalfitano could come in and play are hindering their own progress for the sake of a player most of us (i think) don’t believe he will make the grade at a high level in the EPL

my question, do people think having gosling here is hurting or hindering us in the long run?

I appreciate his effort, he’s got a streak of Nolan in him when it comes to competitiveness and hunger, but imo he offers virtually nothing for us that we couldn’t find in a younger player we already have in his position

is his partner in holland or newcastle? just wondering, usually an indication of things.

not a big fan of HBA going to paris any day off he has but hey, if it means keeping a player of his calibre happy, by all means, go right ahead

I’ve still got plenty of faith in Gosling.

He’s never had a run of games yet,so unfair to judge him,in my opinion.

What a weak side. But I guess that’s expected.

Elliott worries me, he looked seriously poor in the friendlies.

Really want to see Vuckic do well, he has a crackin left foot.

    belfast

imo a ‘run of games’ is not warranted for a youngster trying to break through. they have to do it within the confines of cameos and cup games. imo, gosling hasn’t done anything deserving of continued inclusion, especially over other players

don’t get me wrong, would love nothing more than for him to come on. i just don’t think it’s going to happen

Depending on the silver supremo’s approach to the game it looks more like a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-2-3-1 🙂

    It’s a 4-2-3-1.

It’s a strong side considering who was on the plane. The back four is stronger than I expected. (I would have rested Santon and Taylor, if possible.)

My only real complaint is Eliot over Harper. Does a keeper really need the rest? Even at age 37?

    HWTL!

Morning Lads. just looking at some of the comments. This game is going to be hard as they have some very technical players.I for one will be happy with a draw.

just looking at previous Maritimo teams and the ex Wolves player John Richards used to play for them and also the ex Mackem striker Ian Wallace.( Scored no goals for them) 1-1 tonight. And please no more about Ba until January

@mattyNUFC RE: Gosling. Whatever your opinion of Gosling is at the moment, he is definitely NOT behind Abeid in the midfield pecking order in AP’s eyes.
