Elliot, Bigirimana, Gosling And Amalfitano All Start At Maritimo

5:05 pm, Thursday, September 20th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 398 Comments

Rob Elliot in goal, Gael Bigirimana, Dan Gosling and Romain Amalfitano all start against Maritimo tonight in the first group game of the Europa League.

And as expected young Haris Vuckic  makes the starting line-up in a mix of youth and experience for the Newcastle side.

It looks like Alan Pardew is playing a defensive 4-5-1 formation with Shola Ameobi the lone striker up front,  and maybe Haris Vuckic, who always has an eye for goal,  will be playing as the withdrawn striker, in the role Kevin Nolan used to take up at Newcastle.

The player who didn’t make the bench today is Vurnon Anita, and the news is that he has flown home to be with his girlfriend, who has gone into labor with their child, and it looks like Dan Gosling gets a chance with Vurnon not available.

Youngsters James Tavernier,  Shane Ferguson, Sammy Ameobi and Adam Campbell are on the bench, and we have to hope that Rob Elliot, making his first appearance of the season and only his second senior appearance in the Newcastle goal, has a good game.

The lads will be going for the win tonight, but it looks like it will be a tough game, and there are only three players – Williamson, Taylor and Santon – who will likely start the game on Sunday against Norwich City at home.

Teams:

Maritimo (4-5-1): Romain Salin; Briguel (c), Joao Guilherme, Valentin Roberge, Luis Olim; Rafael Miranda, Joao Luiz, Heldon, Simao, Sami; Danilo Dias
Substitutes: Wellington Lima, Joao Diogo, Marcio Rosario, Igor Rossi, Goncalo Abreu, Fidelis, Adilson

Newcastle United (4-5-1): Rob Elliot; James Perch, Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor, Davide Santon; Gael Bigirimana, Dan Gosling, Gabriel Obertan, Haris Vuckic, Romain Amalfitano; Shola Ameobi (c)
Substitutes: Steve Harper, James Tavernier, Shane Ferguson, Mehdi Abeid, Sylvain Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Adam Campbell

Good team. Worried about injuries in defence

  • 2 santonthenewmaldini // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:09 PM

The only worry I have is Elliot to be honest

Would rather we did not play Perch or Santon as they are going to be needed on Sunday I think if we can try get a goal or 2 we might take off some players

Would love to see Ferguson and Tavernier get some game time as well as Marveux as I imagine his confidence took a bit of a knock against Everton

  • 3 mattyNUFC // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:09 PM

ok, so gosling is almost 23, right? Abeid is 20 and I think it’s pretty communal on here that we all believe Abeid is ahead of Gosling.

Is it time to give up on Gosling as these little cameos where players like Abeid and Amalfitano could come in and play are hindering their own progress for the sake of a player most of us (i think) don’t believe he will make the grade at a high level in the EPL

my question, do people think having gosling here is hurting or hindering us in the long run?

I appreciate his effort, he’s got a streak of Nolan in him when it comes to competitiveness and hunger, but imo he offers virtually nothing for us that we couldn’t find in a younger player we already have in his position

  • 4 ChicagoToon // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:10 PM

Theres going to be a stream for the game, right?

  • 5 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:11 PM

I think its a huge opportunity for the likes of marveux obertan gosling and Elliot to show there worth

  • 6 Sholadona // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:12 PM

Anita has flown home because his partner is in labour, if anyone is wondering.

  • 7 darrenfletcher88 // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:12 PM

Big game for obertan, shola, and bigi!!! Still a strong team

  • 8 toonarmydownsouth // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:14 PM

Wilo and taylor? Best hope for no injuries or good news on colo tomos!

  • 9 mattyNUFC // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:14 PM

    sholadona

is his partner in holland or newcastle? just wondering, usually an indication of things.

not a big fan of HBA going to paris any day off he has but hey, if it means keeping a player of his calibre happy, by all means, go right ahead

  • 10 BelfastMagpie // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:15 PM

I’ve still got plenty of faith in Gosling.

He’s never had a run of games yet,so unfair to judge him,in my opinion.

  • 11 gonufc (up and Hatem) // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:15 PM

What a weak side. But I guess that’s expected.

Elliott worries me, he looked seriously poor in the friendlies.

Really want to see Vuckic do well, he has a crackin left foot.

  • 12 tdt // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:16 PM

    —————-Elliot—————
    Perch–Williamson–S.Taylor–Santon
    ———Bigirimana–Gosling———-
    Obertan——Vuckic——-Amalfitano
    ————-Sh.Ameobi ————-

  • 13 mattyNUFC // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:17 PM

    belfast

imo a ‘run of games’ is not warranted for a youngster trying to break through. they have to do it within the confines of cameos and cup games. imo, gosling hasn’t done anything deserving of continued inclusion, especially over other players

don’t get me wrong, would love nothing more than for him to come on. i just don’t think it’s going to happen

  • 14 jesperfuglsang // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:17 PM

Depending on the silver supremo’s approach to the game it looks more like a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-2-3-1 :-)

so its rob elliots debut in europe?

  • 19 AmericanGeordie // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:22 PM

    It’s a 4-2-3-1.

It’s a strong side considering who was on the plane. The back four is stronger than I expected. (I would have rested Santon and Taylor, if possible.)

My only real complaint is Eliot over Harper. Does a keeper really need the rest? Even at age 37?

    HWTL!

  • 24 Wandering Geordie // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:26 PM

Morning Lads. just looking at some of the comments. This game is going to be hard as they have some very technical players.I for one will be happy with a draw.

just looking at previous Maritimo teams and the ex Wolves player John Richards used to play for them and also the ex Mackem striker Ian Wallace.( Scored no goals for them) 1-1 tonight. And please no more about Ba until January

  • 25 Wandering Geordie // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:29 PM

  • 26 Grafton83 // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:29 PM

Looking forward to seeing Romain Amalfitano. Hope he has a good one. That seems a pretty strong side. Praying there are no more injuries.

  • 27 AmericanGeordie // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:29 PM

@mattyNUFC RE: Gosling. Whatever your opinion of Gosling is at the moment, he is definitely NOT behind Abeid in the midfield pecking order in AP’s eyes.

  • 28 Thump // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:30 PM

Like others, I’m worried about defence – massively. This is going to be a tough game but Sunday is going to be harder still.

    Howay the lads!

  • 52 jayphoto // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:56 PM

  • 53 FatmanJoe // Sep 20, 2012 at 5:57 PM

Really looking forward to seeing what romain can bring to the side Havent seen anything of him yet. Also another game for gabby to prove himself. Going 2-1 us but i think it’ll be difficult. Strong side considering what we’re resting. Will settle for a draw if it means no injuries! HWTL

if we can’t beat this team we’re not supposed to be in europe
    williamson: no technique
gosling: too slow and too fat
    obertan: only pace nothing else

  • 136 Big Pappa Cissé // Sep 20, 2012 at 6:33 PM

    @ Fatman

By setting up shola you mean having his shot saved. I probably have better close ball control than Williamson :) , nothing personal he is just not good enough if we want to move forward as a club. Nice to see Pardew making our players play well before half time now like 😉

  • 137 FatmanJoe // Sep 20, 2012 at 6:33 PM

Haha Ibiza. Yea it was all him of course!

I can’t tolerate ‘fans’ who spend half their time moaning or talking about how our players are beneath us.

They need a wake up call IMO. It’s the reason other fans hate us. Arrogance.

  • 138 Burni // Sep 20, 2012 at 6:33 PM

I’m finding myself getting bored and agitated watchin the toon this season, we never seem have a grip on any of the games we have played. Only 2 players who really seem to care in the whole squad are hba and bigi. The team ethic seems to have disappeared. It also goes to show something when rob Elliot is easily our motm so far….. Closely followed by bigi

Burni it’s frustrating I know to have a player hoof it but it’s not always Williamson. Colo does it often. And colo is slow. And quite often not good enough in the air.

But that gets ignored by the neggars.

  • 155 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Sep 20, 2012 at 6:39 PM

Big Pappa…..It is frustrating. However, if he’s not comfortable, it is better to have the ball their end and not in our box. He clearly lacks some confidence, you can see the players encouraging him to pass out…it will take time.

Let’s not get carried away. He’s not terrible, nor is he amazing. He is what we’ve got and I’m sure will be improved on over time, for now, he’s here, let’s support him and see what happens with the game.

It’s looking a lot better now. Let’s enjoy it

Well on reflection we’re right in this. Maritmo are cheating scummy players who play with little/no sportsmanship.

Ref is having a wobbly one, poor decisions against Bigi and for the freekick in the first place.

I think we’ll take some confidence from that half. As long as Williamson can remember he’s a footballer (of sorts) then we could get the points.

I think marv should be given another chance at some point next half. Also may sub Vukic for Campbell in last 15

Other side of the coin with Obertan’s deliveries. Why aren’t any of our players gambling on the near post, where most of his crosses go? Surely they’ve had enough time playing with him to recognise this. Perhaps he is pinpoint accurate in training? 😉

Everyone…What was the average points needed in the groups last season to get through? Would 10-11 be reasonable? In all seriousness cursed I think we’re being conservative with players at the mo. A potential 3 points at home is far more important than an away game in Europa. Really we only need to win 3 games at home and draw away and Norwich is going to be tricky but winnable with a strong side.

Pardew made the right choice me thinks.

I never usually completely write-off a player or use such language, but Gosling is w**k! Seen enough of him now to come to that firm conclusion.

Trips over the ball and gets it stuck beneath his feet often. Always wants more touches than necessary resulting in the slowing of a move. Fails to see any pass other than the blindingly obvious, which he delays. All he has going for him is workrate. Zero quality.

  • 350 FatmanJoe // Sep 20, 2012 at 7:58 PM

We played well defensively and agreed with espn that gosling and bigi controlled midfield and broke up play. Kept the shape well and reduced the opposition to long range. Elliot looked good and really kept our back line in check.

We lacked inventiveness going forward but sammi gave us something. Marv went missing in his cameo as did fergie. None of our attacking players throughout looked great but shola always looked threatening.

0-0 and no serious injuries for Norwich. Happy with that.

Burni….Welcome to the light side, you now get 15% off at all sports direct retailers (not applicable at SJP – couldn’t bring myself to type it’s newer nickname 😉 ).

nufccursed…I don’t think anyone said it would be easy at home. But at home is where we should be more attacking. I would think with no travel etc, Pardew would opt to play a few more regulars in the home games, which I would hope will give us the edge. However, nothing is ever certain (besides people bickering on here, now that bet would certainly pay off).

    fatman: new team??
bigirimana and amalfitano were the only newbies

  • 374 FatmanJoe // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:07 PM

We had chances but couldn’t convert. We weren’t playing for the draw but there were certain factors that stopped us tonight. Hit the bar a few times for instance. I would have liked 3-0 obviously but anyone who’s watched footy for more than 5 mins knows that youngsters playing on the big stage take time and playing weaker opposition doesn’t mean a thrashing.

  • 375 JAMSHA // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:07 PM

arfa avaible for nxt europa cup match???? imagen.arfa would have rip the opp today if he was not suspended

  • 376 MagpiesFlyHigh // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:08 PM

Couldn’t get a stream, despite trying half a dozen..
BUT I got a really good idea of the game judging from comments on here
    1) it was poor game,
    2) we had a useless midfield,
    3) Willo was very bad again, poor defending and missed a goal chance. Shola had a couple of near misses, hit the post but was slow and useless.
    4) Obertan was useless, but our best player in the first half
    5) Sammi had a few decent touches but is lazy and useless
    6) Gosling is slow and useless.

Any stranger reading this stuff would think it was a Maritimo blog… but then

    7) Santon was okay

  • 377 Marty-Toon // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:08 PM

    Belfast agree with ya there.
Boo boys out after every game tryin to hang out some players
We did well in parts tonight,an away draw in Europe is good and we hit the post 3 times so we could of won it.
Most of the team don`t play together often and some haven`t had much playing time.¨
    Euriope is much slower pace

  • 378 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:09 PM

We should be beating them 3-0? With a mostly reserve team? Howay mate, think it through. We are gambling with the EL by not playing out normal starting 11. A point away in our first game back in the EL is not too shabby. Not spectacular, but get a little bit of a grip…even with your pinky.

  • 379 hotdog // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:09 PM

nufccursed – Football just does not work like that. If they are in the group stages they are no mugs and these so called lesser teams are getting much beeter just like at international level. Maritimo had 5 Brazillians in their line up are you saying they will all be crap. It was a decent draw that should have been a win on chances but considering the team we put out i will take it and move onto the next game.

  • 380 FatmanJoe // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:10 PM

New team as in haven’t played much football together.

And bigi isn’t a newbie he played in the last European game.

    Honestly.

  • 381 lukes26 // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:10 PM

I don’t know how to parse that performance. we controlled play, but didn’t create as much as we should have against an inferior team.

Amalfitano, Vuckic, and Perch were poor. Gosling was too, but was better than he has been in past games. Sammy is definitely not match fit.

Just seemed to be a case of a team unfimiliar with tendencies of teammates.

  • 382 nufcursed // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:11 PM

i’m not saying with should beat this team with this eleven.
i’m saying newcastle should beat maritimo without problems
and i am saying that pardew should take europe a bit more seriously!
with a decent line-up we could go far

  • 383 Burni // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:11 PM

Fatman, people dont want magic overnight, they just dont wanna watch their team get dominated by any other team.

Now, I refer to all the matches this season, yeah we beat spurs but I still dont think we controlled that game.

Imo we have been very poor every game, that’s my opinion. Last season and the one before I was very positive when a lot weren’t but I can’t be this season. Something doesn’t feel right.

I don’t see many of our youngsters coming through as ppl suggest.

krul, bigi, Ben arfa, shola, the only players who have played well for us this season….. Maybe ba and Elliot…..

If ur gonna disagree, tell me why instead of knocking my opinion, I mean this genuinely as U may say summit that I might have missed

  • 384 toonking // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:13 PM

that comment pardew made saying he does not like playing teams to defend what a load of bull. i knew from the start when he had all 4 starter defenders yet not a single midfielder or forward who is part of our current starting 11 even on the bench that this was going to be a boredraw.

  • 385 BelfastMagpie // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:14 PM

Im not saying Gosling is great by the way.

Think some people forget we got him for free.lol

  • 386 FatmanJoe // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:14 PM

Burni I don’t think I’ve chatted with you tonight. How am I knocking you?

  • 387 nufcursed // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:15 PM

    burni totally agree mate!
we have been playing poor in every game this season.
    atromitos: very lucky
    spurs:best game of the season
    chelsea:not good enough
    villa:poor
    everton:incredibly lucky
    maritimo: very poor

  • 388 Ibizatoon - Back by popular demand // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:16 PM

Burni….For me, expect the “don’t see many youngsters coming through” comment, very fair assessment. We haven’t really played well, certainly nowhere near to the level we have seen before. But still have got ok results. It’s still early in the season, form should improve. I don’t see the need to panic yet. If we can grind out decent enough results whilst we’re getting in to gear, surely that’s a positive thing?

Of course we want to see us dominate every game we play, but it’s simply not realistic. Every team (every single one) goes through “bad” patches. Ours is not catastrophic and I think all will come good.

  • 389 FatmanJoe // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:17 PM

We had strong aspects in every game but we’re not gelling at the mo. Still starting the season and other teams are playing worse and not getting results.

Still think it’s going to be good. Looking forward to the season. Coz I like football. I like football more than bitching and whining. But that’s just me.

  • 390 brklyngeordie // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Alright lads not bad for our first game back in Europe with most of the lads getting there first action of the season and having little experience playing together..To be fair i think we were unlucky not to win this one thought Shola had 2 chances that he should have buried but like i said not a bad result… This is what i thought of each players performance Elliot-Solid 1 really good save in first half did well with most shots surprisingly good. Perch-Ok performance recovered well a few times but was almost caught out there a little too much for my liking. Willo-ok Saylor-ok Santon-Good but really need to find someone he can work with on left side liked the look of him and Fergie late… Gosling-poor yea had one good shot off post but still went into headers half hearted in the midfield and dint not unlock anything… Bigi-ok cant be to harsh age considered but at least he has no fear which i cant say for all… Obertan-poor everytime i see this guy i say why and what did people see in this lad faster we can get rid the better… Alfy-poor didnt think he or obertan gave us anything… Vukcic- Ok thought he was being mugged by a fewof their players but did ok..Shola-ok could have been an excelllent game if he could have got the winner and captained this young squad tonight but not meant to be

  • 391 Ketsbaia9 // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:30 PM

Obertan was my man of the match. Sammi Ameobi looked impressive when he came on. Santon had a decent game. All the rest were average/poor. I thought Shola had one of his better games today. His control didn’t let him down.

Gosling looks poor. I can’t believe Abeid isn’t ahead of him. Abeid must have done something similar to Nile Ranger, otherwise I’m sure he’d have started today.

Williamson got away with it today. On another day we would’ve lost that match.

  • 392 futurefanbaseofNUFC // Sep 20, 2012 at 8:44 PM

People who say it was a good draw obviously have no ambition. We should have easily won that game. Even with the fringe / young players, I see why Shola is never gonna be considered a 1st team player. Terrible finishing for someone who’s played Europa before didn’t even show captain skills to motivate the midfield. Santon had a good game. Oberton just is a poor player Fergie is obviously laughing at us for buying him. Williamson looks terrible i hope we get rid of him next year. I felt we should have won this game give us a jump in the group they were ranked 6th in Portugal or something. 2 points could be the difference in facing a team like Rubin or Genk in the knockouts us facing Lyon, Napoli. Plus bordeaux ate Brugge.

Sorry if the thoughts seem scattered i delayed a road trip to watch that boring game. So im doing. It on the road

Ha Kets you clown. Oba was poor, good pace but end product was rubbish. Someone suggested earlier that our players should have sensed he was crossing to near post and moved there but wingers are meant to look up and see where players are, not hoof and hope.

Shola, Elliot, bigi, gosling were solid. Perch was fine. Santon his usual self. Williamson had one slip but was solid for the rest. Could have conceded from his mistake in the 13th but didn’t and after that he was ever present. Taylor made a couple of mistakes too and probably should have (and might still) get a suspension for that elbow.

It was our wingers today that were particularly weak but a 0-0 on a shot ground with a shut ref against a cheating team for a newly fells together team is a decent result and we have a fully fit team to play Norwich now too.

With regards to abeid against gosling. Pardew was unhappy with gosling before and challenged him to try harder in training. He did that and got a place tonight. Abeid was on the bench but there was no reason to bring him on. He wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the game whereas marv, fergie and sammi might have done.

You can’t just say you like a player and so he should play. He has to actually have a function in the team that plays.

After all that your response will be just pure nonsense again so I’m off.

off topic so apologies but surely it’s about time steve harper got a testimonial? As honest as they come, never given any of his umpteen managers a moments trouble, long service albeit in mostly a back up role but if he had moved he in my opinion would have become a contender for an england shot, and a geordie. What more these days qualifies a player from up here for a glory night?
