  • 3 bollance // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:53 PM

  • 4 Thump // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:54 PM

Easily Tav. Fergie being a close second.

  • 5 bollance // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:54 PM

Are you in a huff? We have not managed to beat man u at their ground for 40 years.

As long as we win on Saturday, all will be forgotten

  • 6 toonking // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:55 PM

ed cancel that gosling vote from me

  • 7 bollance // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:56 PM

Did you not want Fegi to get at their full back a bit more after he produced that sublime delivery?

He was not help much by Marv to get down that wing.

  • 8 Spuggy // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:56 PM

Fergy gives us natural balance being left sides on the left. Especially as both Santon, Marv and Jonas like to cut in.

    Our best team:

  • 9 archaeomag // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:57 PM

Tavernier and Perch and Cisse for scoring and Colo for being there, and Bigi and … – easier to list those who disappoint, but not really disappointed to be out of this one.

  • 10 bollance // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:58 PM

Gosling is getting better, slowly but surely he will make it. Maybe best to send him out on loan so another team can wait for that breakthrough to happen. He showed enough tonight to suggest he could make it. But he needs to work on his long range passing or try not to do it!

  • 11 ToonDownSouth // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:59 PM

I’d probably have Sammy ahead of Fergie, personally.

  • 12 Thump // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:59 PM

@bollance: I did and that’s the only criticism I have of him. Given he’s a small lad it was nice to see him fend off challenges as best as he could, contesting for the ball etc. Marveaux started well (his set pieces were very nice) but like you say, his team play was found wanting.

  • 13 bambams // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:59 PM

Enjoyed the game, we played well and should of won . My only concern was we only have three finishers in our club- ba cisse and benny.
If we are to seriously challenge on more than one front either give young Campbell more chances or we will have to spend in jan, it’s quite simple. Over to you Ashley , are we going to challenge or are you just happy to advertise your sports shop?

  • 14 archaeomag // Sep 26, 2012 at 9:59 PM

This was only a practice match for our European Squad.

  • 15 Nufc-83 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:00 PM

Who’s the clown who put Gosling. I thought tav played well but for me Shola was outstanding and hardly lost the ball all night

  • 16 SupaToonKid // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:00 PM

Tavernier was the best, Perch also played well tonight, Elliot is definitely a reliable reserve keeper, Bigi & Fergie both looked good when they came on, Cissé did well with service he got, Shola was alright and Obertan was inconsistent as per usual. Everyone else was average but Gosling & Willo were both crap.

  • 17 beefman13 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:02 PM

Fergie has not played much footie at all iwith his injuries, when he gets up to speed he will start taking players on and getting quality crosses in, i was annoyed our players were still giving it to obertan all the time, AP should have told them to get fergie on the ball more.

  • 18 Nufc-83 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:03 PM

Bollance i would bet any amount of money you want at the age of 26 Gosling will be in the championship.

  • 19 bollance // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:03 PM

For me Marv has gone off the boil. He looks disinterested and drifts in and out of games. He plays it very safe. I can not remember him bursting down the wing or even dribbling down the wing.

At least Obertan was making the runs although to limited effect, sadly.

  • 20 ToonDownSouth // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:04 PM

To be fair, they started doubig up on Fergie at the end. Unfortunately Marveaux wasn’t awake enough to take advantage of the space.

Fergie seems to have a couple of games like this every year though, then – as you say – injuries hit.

  • 21 mattyNUFC // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:04 PM

perch did well at CB. did nothing when he was on the wing. he was at fault of Cleverly’s goal. backed off waaaay too much

Tavernier hands down showed the most promise and was the pick of the lot for me.

good to see cisse get confidence back

    again, Fergie is no LB.

Gosling, his usual self. some good, some bad, mostly non-existent.

Vuckic was doing well in the second half. would have seen how he coped with cisse instead of shola.

thought shola’s hold-up play was exquisite but his lack of speed really is appalling. Marveaux played him in 3 times in the first half and he couldn’t even get to the ball.

    thought marvs was ok.

williamson was shocking (this isn’t beating a dead horse either. he was awful TODAY). welbeck tore him a new a**hole two or three times tonight.

bigi, solid. tiote his usual marauding, half-the-time-misplacing-passes-self but broke up play well in the first half.

    gabby – eh

  • 22 toonking // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:06 PM

    shola is mine
    tav was second
    gosling was my only downer
elliot made good saves could not really prevent either goal
perch did better today compared to how he has done at RB recently
colo not much positive or negative but he has just returned
willo was poor with finishes but made some good defensive tackles
tavernier was the best of the wide med until ferguson came on
obatan again his final touches let him down i think he should be an impact sub more this season
gosling poor with his passes and wasted some good chances
tiote was very careful with his tackling unlike he usually is
marvo lack of passes going a step too far thinking he is like HBA but h did do some good set pieces
vuckic played poor he is not a striker
shola did well controling the ball but no one was about to finish them.

  • 23 ToonDownSouth // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:06 PM

Marveaux just seems like a complete luxury player – and a team like ours can’t afford to carry one of those unless they’re a lot better than Marv currently is.

It does make me laugh that only a couple of weeks ago, everyone was berating Pardew for not picking Marveaux.

Maybe the coaching staff do know more than the fans? Woah!

  • 24 toonking // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:06 PM

    sunderland v middlesboro

  • 25 Mister Tuff // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:07 PM

I’ve just voted for Obertan -only to check if there were idiots out there who voted for him -there was only one other -two including my vote. I suspect the other voter was AP.
Whilst the positives were Tavernier, Bigi, and Mr T -oops Shola and Fergie the rest did not cover themselves in any glory. I was checking out Obertans positional play when we were not in possession -empty spaces -as far as I am concerned he needs to be sold off in January.

  • 26 mattyNUFC // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:07 PM

oh, and elliot of course! brilliant!

was one of his critics before maritimo. he is a great shot stopper

  • 27 jawballsaswallwell // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:07 PM

Gosling appears to be premiership standard but not Newcastle standard, and if Vuckic is going to be a star it’s going to be on the continent, from what I’ve seen. Marv is strangely subdued and Obertan started great and just fell away when we needed him.

Just as a balance to a more positive earlier post.

  • 28 bollance // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:08 PM

He is 23. At this speed of improvement you might be right. Paper talk suggests Villa are interested but i am sure you will agree i am not sure what they have seen in him!

He had been playing in the u21 team so he must have something going for him and Pards has been persisting with him in the ‘cup team’.

My theory is that he is young and English so he will have a decent transfer value if he can turn the corner.

On the performance tonight i suggest he could be in the prem at 26 but not for us.

btw it was not me who voted gosling motm

  • 29 Toon1978 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:08 PM

We didn’t play to bad. On a positive side, Cisse is off the mark and was unlucky not to get a second. On a negative side, Shola, Gosling and Obertan. Just my opinion.

  • 30 Marty-Toon // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:08 PM

What 4 people chose Obertan as motm???

  • 31 Spuggy // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:09 PM

I think fergie is a brilliant player, probably our best on the LW. He rarely puts a foot wrong and generally has an end product- something we sorely lack from the wings.

  • 32 MagpiesFlyHigh // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:09 PM

    Sunderland v Middlesbrough

    Swindon v Aston Villa

    Wigan v Bradford

    Leeds v Southampton

    Norwich v Tottenham

    Liverpool v Swansea

    Chelsea v Manchester United

    Reading v Arsenal

  • 33 mattyNUFC // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:09 PM

    probably not

  • 34 magpiepoot // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:09 PM

    Ober had a good game I think…..

  • 35 Thump // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:10 PM

Agreed, bollance. Ober had a decent game today , if his final product was a bit better he’d have easily been MotM – he didn’t stop running!

  • 36 magpiepoot // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:10 PM

Fergie had great game – him and cisse good choice of subs

  • 37 magpie6699 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Tavernier looked classy – just pipped Shola for me. Glad Cisse is off the mark – watch them fly in now!
On the down side – Marv was disappointing and what exactly is the point of Dan Gosling? No pace, little control – one good chance in the first half put into row Z. I don’t think he’s terribl;e – just very mediocre and he has done nothing for me to get in the squad, let alone the team, team ahead of Bigi and others. Sorry – but I just can’t see the supposed talent.

  • 38 Toon1978 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Still waiting patiently for Vuckic to show what he can do. Thing is, can he do it at this level?

  • 39 bollance // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Some good looking ties. When you see the quality in the round you think that if we are drawn away we would have stuggled against most of those teams

  • 40 manxpie // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:13 PM

1st of all gutted bout goin out we cudda got sumthin there but as the old sayin goes “cud be a blessin in disguise”
but sum of you jumpin on gosling he ran his foookin heart out tonight and got in the positions where we wan’t him 2 be , okay he missed them but he did 1000% more than marveaux who i am worried about, he really just does not look botherd 2 me!
and as for people writin of vuckic jesus christ its his 1st season rly playin 1st team footy for us (you do know he’s under 20??) sum perspective really needs 2 hit sum people on here!

  • 41 Toon1978 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:13 PM

Obertan couldn’t do a cross word never mind cross a ball lol. He is quick as lightning but has very little else.

  • 42 magpie6699 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:14 PM

Although the commentators (don’t like Alan Smith!) kept going on about the Manchester “youngsters”, let’s not forget they had 3 England internationals on, not to mention Hernandez, Anderson, De Gea, Fletcher etc.

  • 43 BelfastMagpie // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:14 PM

We got Gosling for free f*** sake lol

    Stop moaning.

  • 44 jawballsaswallwell // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:15 PM

Ferguson was excellent but only in a cameo, he has earned a run in the team, when that happens may be down to injury and that will be the time to judge him of course.

Bigi is doing a job for the 1st team now and that is a real bonus for us. Also great to have Colo and Tiote back, big big boost for Reading that.

  • 45 Marty-Toon // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:15 PM

If his end product was better?????
What`s his role in the team????
Yes it`s to take on defenders and feed the ball into the box for our strikers to get on the end of.
Just as Fergie did within a minute of coming on,that`s end product and that`s what Obertan is missing.
What`s the point of having him on the pitch if he can`t cross or go past defenders to shoot???

  • 46 SupaToonKid // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:16 PM

I really want Gosling to prove the doubters wrong (me being one of them) but really if he doesn’t improve soon then we should just get rid as he’s stunting the growth of better young CMs like Bigirimana, Amalfitano & Abeid etc.

At least Obertan has shown some promise but Gabriel himself needs to find some consistency & improve his decision making as he tends to do some great runs but then miscue a cross or over-do the skill & get tackled.

  • 47 ToonDownSouth // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:16 PM

I agree, but that type of player can surely be molded into something half useful haha. Look at Walcott – he’s quick as hell, has no brain, but he’s still half decent and worth a place in the Arsenal squad.

I do think Obertan is getting better with every game to be honest – but he may have already reached his ceilling.

  • 48 magpie6699 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:16 PM

Belfast – and the point is?

  • 49 toonarmydownsouth // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:16 PM

Yeah but the prob is he’s been promising fir 4 seasons now and his lack of progression in to the first team is worrying considering the rate the other youth players around him seem to be developing

  • 50 leeb1982 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:16 PM

Why do people think coz obertan is quick and can run all day makes him a good player. He is awful and if we don’t have a youngster in the ranks better than the likes of obertan and Williamson then me may as well scrap our youth system

  • 51 BelfastMagpie // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:18 PM

The only central midfielder we have who gets in the box too.

Defo not as bad as some people make out.

  • 52 Toon1978 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:19 PM

I also think Elliot had a cracking game. Not sure if Vuckic will make it. I would love him to succeed but not to sure on that one. Bigirimana was once again top dollar. We have got a stealthere lol.

  • 53 toonking // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:20 PM

belfast actually if pardew played vuckic in CM like he should be rather than forward that gosling would not be the only CM we have that gewts in the box

  • 54 BelfastMagpie // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:22 PM

Well Gosling has shown a lot more than Vuckic has in my opinion.

    Yet people lick Vuckic’s ass.

  • 55 jimmymagpie // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:25 PM

Obertan and Williamson should be on the beach at Tynemouth giving rides to the kiddies! Marveaux, Gosling, and Vuckic, will never make Premier League players. Remember, Man U had the kids out at the back! On the up side, thank God that Papiss got his goal, but Colo is doubtful for Reading.

  • 56 jimmymagpie // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:28 PM

Supa – I’m not sure that Amalfitano is any better, but certainly Bigi and Abeid should be in ahead of him.

  • 57 manxpie // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:28 PM

TADS i dont agree he really hasn’t had the chances sammi, n fergi, hav had and that rly because of injury, in reserves hes been brilliant for a number of years and i also think he’s not been playing his proper position and to be honest its not him promising its the fans who are overhyping him i’m just saying he needs a hell of alot more chances before he gets judged properly.
what did you think of gosling?

  • 58 manxpie // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:30 PM

jimmie where did ya get the info for collo?

  • 59 pawl250 // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:31 PM

5 things I took from the game tonight!

    1. Cisse scoring is the best thing that could have happened tonight! He needed that goal to take the pressure off him, let the goals commence!
    2. Williamson is slower than my Nana, who is 82 years old! She could still defend better than him too! His heading ability for his height is atrocious! He has no accuracy and when the ball lands at his feet I am in awe at how he can be our 1st back up centre back!
    3. Bigirmana – this kid will be better than Tiote!! He’s looking to be a right gem. For me I would put him on as sub EVERY game, and he would be my first choice replacement to Tiote or Cabaye should they get injured!
    4. Gosling can’t defend, but his attacking mind is excellent. If anyone recorded the match tonight he was always in the box when a ball came in or we moved up the pitch. Scenario – 10-15 mins to go we need a goal! Gosling would be our best bet, not Obertan or Sammy!
    5. Vuckic in my honest opinion will not make it. He has no presence, his passing is poor and its like time has stopped when he runs he is that slow!

Where is Abeid?! He looked arguably one of our best young prospects during pre season!

Also Tavernier had a good game but please do not say he is why we didn’t bring Debuchy in! He is not even in the same league! Remember this was Man Utd reserves and his attacking play was very questionable at times!

    Team for Reading

    Harper (Krul if fit)
    Anita-STaylor-Colo(Perch if not fit)-Santon
    Arfa-Cabaye-Tiote(Bigi if not fit)-Jonas

Anyone saying Ba and Cisse can’t play together please give yourself a slap!

  • 60 jimmymagpie // Sep 26, 2012 at 10:38 PM

Pawl – agree with everything you say above, with the possible exception of point 4, I don’t get Gosling I’m afraid. Manxpie – Pardew in his interview after the game said Colo is very sore, and doubtful for Reading. He also said he had no option but to play Willo, as we are down to the boards with centre-halves, so is there something up with Saylor we’re not being told. The owner’s financial/transfer policy looking more fragile than ever – more interested in buying JJB!
