Jonas Gutierrez has been captaining Newcastle recently, in the absence of his Argentine team-mate Fabricio Coloccini, and Jonas seems to have become an important cog in Newcastle’s wheel, as least as far as manager Alan Pardew is concerned.
Jonas Gutierrez – we have to as well or better than last season
Newcastle are playing two games a week most weeks these days, and we have Bordeaux at home in the Europa League on Thursday night, followed by a home game against Manchester United.
I thought the game was away but I see it’s at home – it’s that dementia setting in. 😀
Jonas seems upbeat about the situation currently at Newcastle:
“Its a big week for us with the Bordeaux and Manchester United games, but that is the way it has been this year. They have all felt like pretty big weeks.” “Europe is very important to us. We worked hard to get there last season and we want to do well.”
“It of course means extra matches for us, but whatever game you are playing in the shirt of Newcastle you want to win.” “You want to do it right for the club. That is the most important thing. We don’t care what team we play against, or what competition we are in, we just want to do things right and win as many games as we can.”
“That’s why we are here, to try to win the big games.” “We are getting a lot of players with injuries and it is a big, big problem for us, what with all the matches we have to play.” “When you don’t have all the players available, its hard for the manager to prepare the team and hard for the players because we don’t have that big a squad.”
“But we have to keep going and keep focused on the jobs we have to do for the team.” “I enjoy being one of the senior members of the squad and hopefully I can help things out a bit.” “To be the captain of a club like Newcastle is a massive honour. “
“Its good for the manager to have that type of long term contract.” ” Its important to have the manager and a lot of the players on long-term deals because it shows what is going on at the club and that they want to keep all of the players.” “The manager has done a great job.”
“He deserved to win manager of the year. But in football you cannot think about the past; you have to think about the present. Like all the players and staff, he is focused on this season now. We have to try to do the same or better than last season.”
Newcastle again have some defensive problems with Danny Simpson, Fab Coloccini, Ryan Taylor, Tim Krul and Steven Taylor all out injured at the moment.
It’s now becoming obvious that we needed to bring in another center-back and another striker to the club in the summer transfer window, since we have only three experienced players in each of those important positions in the Newcastle squad.
We have to hope that will be remedied in January, before we run into another problem, and we find out we just don’t have enough players.
That wouldn’t be good.
