Shane Ferguson has looked very good for Newcastle in his two recent substitute appearances at Manchester United and at Reading, and he’s set up a goal in each of those two games with some good crosses from the left wing.
Shane Ferguson – likely to get a start against Bordeaux
Shane now seems to be a starter for the full Northern Ireland side, so he will want to push on at Newcastle and see if he can get more first team appearances, after being injured early this season.
Alan Pardew seems to think he can do that, as the Newcastle manager had this to say about the Derry-born youngster:
“He’s pushing, Fergie. I kept saying he’d have an impact with that left foot of his, and my goodness he’s made an impact this week.”
Two assists in two fairly short substitute appearances is not too bad, and Sammy Ameobi is also fit again from the injury he picked up last January, which kept him out for the rest of last season, and we could also see the 20 year-old start the game at St. James’ Park on Thursday evening.
Sammy Ameobi – in action against SC Braga in pre-season
This is what the Newcastle manager had to say about Shola’s younger brother, who was born and bred in Newcastle:
“Sammy didn’t get on at Reading because we had a couple of injuries, but I’ve said all along those two will be big players for us this year.”
We expect to see both players in with a very good chance of starting the game on Thursday night, and it would be nice to get the win, before we meet Manchester United at St. James’ Park on the following Sunday.
And for the record, 21 year Ferguson has made 21 appearances for Newcastle and 20 year-old Sammy Ameobi has made 15 appearances for Newcastle.

Comment #1Hope we don’t play too many youngsters tomorrow night. Bordeaux need to be taken seriously.

Comment #4Just got my tickets through the post yesterday for me and the bairn to go to the game tomorrow night! 😀
Really hope Pardew puts out a strong team. I don’t mind Sammy, Bigi and especially Fergie getting games because I really rate all 3 but if we play all our kids against Bordeaux it would be plain disrespectful to them and we could easily lose the game.
Bordeaux are still unbeaten this season I believe and didn’t they win their last Euro game 4-0 against a half decent team in Brugge?
Really, really looking forward to it though!
Come on Pardew give us a chance please!

Comment #5A great opportunity for our young players.
I hope Tavernier, Bigi, Gosling, Amalfitano, Sammy, Vuckic & Campbell all start or get a decent run out.

Comment #7gosling would be out the door if i were pardew. hopeless. harper/elliott then tavernier, perch, williamson, santon. midfield of tiote, cabaye (needs form), fergie and obertan, up front vuckic and cisse. think vuckic could benefit from having cisse and cabaye either side.
i want us to take the euroleague seriously, that and the capital one cup were our only chances of silverware and i think we have a punchers chance in this one.

Comment #8My team for Thursday would be as followed-
Elliot
Tavernier perch Williamson santon
Obertan bigi Anita ferguson
Ba ameobi
Bench would be cisse, harper, Ben Arfa, sammy, tiote.
Think this would be a team capable of winning with obertan and ferguson getting down the wings and think shola and ba will link up and both a good aerial threat, if we winning by 70th minute bring tiote on for shola to secure midfielder and change to a 4 5 1 if we losing or drawn we got attacking options in Ben Arfa and cisse. What do you’d think come on the toon

Comment #9From what I have seen so far this season, jonas doesnt have the legs or crossing ability to play out wide anymore, and looks more effective playing centrally, his work rate and commitment, helps us gain the advantage, and control games.
I dont think vuckic is going to make it at newcastle, he is a player with talent, but i have my doubts if the english game suits him, he wants too much time on the ball, and its hard to see what his best position is, he doesnt have the natural goalscoring instinct to play up front, and he doesnt have the work rate to play central midfield, it seems like playing in a deeper role off a central striker would probably be best for him.
Pardew doesnt seem to rate abeid that highly, he has looked good in the games i have seen him.
I dont understand what everyone sees in tavernier, he has good pace, but he doesnt have any positional sense at all, and gets turned inside out by any decent wingers, i know he is young, but you either have decent positional or you dont.
Our best youngsters are ferguson, sami ameobi, bigi, and adam campbell in the long term

Comment #10I would certainly pick Tiote in CM, and Anita at RB. I would also give Harper the nod over Elliot. Then I’d like to see Ba and Cissé at least on the bench in case we need goals. I think most of the problem with the EL games is the traveling. With two home games coming up and then the international break I think we can afford to play a few of our big guns. We might even give Cabaye a run-out to get him up to speed for Sunday.

Comment #11Wonder how many goals we’ve conceded while Ferguson has been on the pitch,I’d bet the stats are favourable and I really think he looks the part be it left back or mid.Can understand people saying he possibly needs a bit more bulk aswell though.

Comment #12I have to say i find it very frustrating to watch Gosling, Vukic, and Obertan. Gosling tries hard but really doesnt look good enough. Vukic flatters, Obertan is getting better but aint holding my breath. As for that bloke that we nivked from under Liverpools noses…..they may have dodged a bullet. Missed most of last season and seems to lack the power needed. Hope I’m wrong because he is clearly a technically good player – might just be better in a less aggressive league?
