Cabaye And Simpson Start – Ba And Ben Arfa On Bench

7:12 pm, Thursday, October 4th, 2012 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 317 Comments

As expected Yohan Cabaye and Danny Simpson return to the Newcastle team for tonight’s Europa League Group D game at home, against a strong Bordeaux side.

Alan Pardew has made seven changes to the side that drew with Reading 2-2 on Sunday, and in come Danny Simpson, Rob Elliot, Shane Ferguson, Vurnon Anita, Yohan Cabaye, Shola Ameobi and Gabby Obertan.

Papiss Cisse starts up front with Shola, and Ben Arfa and Demba Ba are on the bench, in case they are needed in this game.

Also on the bench are Steve Harper, Davide Santon, Gael Bigirimana, Dan Gosling and Sammy Ameobi.

Newcastle definitely need a win tonight.

Howay The Lads!!

    fromt last thread:

which one of papis or shola will be out wide then? Seems strange to not put a natural winger there. neither cisse or shola are gonna wanna be out on the wing

  • 3 Kruls gloves // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:16 PM

I think it’ll be Anita at left back, fergie left, obertan right and shola and cisse up top in a standard 4-4-2

  • 4 Conaldo (The Wizard) // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:18 PM

    That’s a strong looking side.

    Now for criticism!
Obertan should be sold to a charity shop
Williamson and Simpson, Kets has just jumped off the queen Alexandria bridge (he’s mackem…)
Anita tiote and cabaye, what kind of second string crap is this!
    We were promised mediocrity dammit!

  • 5 mattyNUFC // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:18 PM

magpies til death – last thread

i really hope it’s not 4312. with these players it’s just way too narrow. it’d essentially be 42112. i don’t think anyone could believe our width is coming from simmo on the right?

has to be a 433, tiote and anita FINALLY playing behind cabaye. just wish fergie would be pushed up to LW with santon behind him, or some variation involving a real winger

either way, hope the final third and our inability to incorporate midfield into the attack is not our undoing yet again.

    hoping for 2-1

  • 6 toonbrother // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:19 PM

    great line up

  • 7 Jam only For H.ben Arfa // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:19 PM

BORDEAUX : Carrasso – Mariano, Henrique, Planus, Trémoulinas – Saivet, Plasil, Sané, Obraniak – Gouffran, Jussiê,

A Good goal keeper, a good defense, it will not be easy…
    be carefull for the corners!!

  • 8 Tonytoon73 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:20 PM

Has everyone got their cv on here tonight. The comments are immensely long. FFS you lot should own the town and manage them. LOL

I like jussié, He play like marveaux, sometime very terrible…!!

  • 11 Grafton83 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:23 PM

I would rather have a plant pot in defense than mike williamson, he does seem to be good at heading upfront though

  • 12 mattyNUFC // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:23 PM

    tonytoon

would rather read opinion than you trying to entice other posters to meet up with you to fight if they don’t agree with you, ha

  • 13 ToonDownSouth // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:24 PM

If the official sit says 4-3-3, I don’t see why they would lie?

I wouldn’t even mind a 4-4-2 if we had Fergy/Sammy/Obertan on the wings. But it simply does not work with Jonas there.

  • 14 Ketsbaia9 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:25 PM

Obertan has some good things about him. If he does well this season we should keep him on.

We are going to concede a few tonight with Williamson and Simpson playing.

Looking forward to watching Shane Ferguson again.

  • 15 Grafton83 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:25 PM

Looking forward to seeing Shane Ferguson he’s impressed recently, so nice to know we do have someone with a good cross on them.

  • 16 toonbrother // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:25 PM

this is a 4-4-2 for sure

  • 17 Grafton83 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:26 PM

    Jinx

  • 18 lukes26 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:26 PM

Looking forward to seeing Ferguson play LB. I’ve always felt he was the 2nd best LB on the team and potentially could challenge Santon for the spot.

He has the instincts of a defender. Might need a steak and protein shake diet though.

  • 19 mattyNUFC // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:28 PM

    definitely agree with everyone

very excited to see fergie play again. he’s had two years of progression since he impressed us at the end of pardew’s first few months.

still amazes me how little he is! could care less though as long as he keeps showing up our other, more ‘senior’ wingers

  • 20 Tonytoon73 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:28 PM

matty what you trying to say? How you doing mate.? LOL

  • 22 Grafton83 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:30 PM

We look very strong everywhere except defence, Midfield in particular will be very strong, if Obertan plays at his absolute best we have a good chance, his performance could be the difference.

  • 23 Nick Sly // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:30 PM

This is a really good team. Very excited.

  • 24 mattyNUFC // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:31 PM

ha, i’m well, man. not up for any meet-ups, but, ya know….

hoping we can put in a good performance against a solid Bordeaux side…

On another note, anyone else planning on traveling to France for the away-leg?

  • 25 Nick Sly // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:32 PM

    A

  • 26 bills-son // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:33 PM

Being tied to a bed of nails by Derek before Ashley sits on his face pulling his pubes out with tweezers is too good for JFA.

  • 27 ToonDownSouth // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:33 PM

    matty

I get the impression that the away trips will be undertaken by our kids & reserves. Not really up for travelling to France to watch our kids get battered by Bordeaux. Imagine a lot feel the same.

  • 28 lukes26 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:36 PM

im guessing that Cisse is not going to start at Man U this weekend.

  • 31 Burni // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:37 PM

    Decent team tonight.

buzzing to see fergie playing but gutted its at left back. I’m sure he’ll do well either way. The kid really does show sparks of genius sometimes.

Fingers crossed cisse finds his shooting boots tonight too

  • 32 Tonytoon73 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:37 PM

matty we are all going to brugge, but can’t get ticket for game. F@ck it 2 days on the drink. HA HA

  • 33 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:38 PM

  • 34 gaza25 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:40 PM

  • 36 mattyNUFC // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:41 PM

    TDS

gotta think though, it’s going to be one of our last group games, and if we don’t get a win tonight it’ll probably still be tight by that time, if we haven’t dropped out of contention yet

  • 37 Burni // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:41 PM

Bpc, even though marveaux has been pants this season and obertan has looked good?

  • 38 ppb // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:41 PM

@bpc for match time? because maveaux has really just been a headless chicken

  • 39 HarryHarrison // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:42 PM

Think this starting 11 shows real intent from Pards, in Pardew we trust and this is why!! Key players for Sunday benched, only shock inclusion for me is Tiote tbh, didnt think he’d be risked but fair play!!

  • 40 Grafton83 // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:44 PM

Would have picked Carver over Obertan but nevermind

  • 41 mattyNUFC // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:44 PM

i hardly think marvs has been a ‘headless chicken’, he just doesn’t seem to have kicked into a second gear

saying obertan has looked good is tinged with more than a hint of embellishment. he’s looked how he’s always look; not that good

now, i’ll support him of course but do i think he’ll ever make the grade at NUFC, let along the EPL? nope

  • 42 obatoyou // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:45 PM

Ferguson is a good player but where is Campbell dude? Dafuq

  • 45 check the toastie // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:47 PM

Good little team that, need Mr T to sit in front of back 4 as it is a little suspect, hope Perchy has another super game, come on Perchy lad hold that back line together. Think we have plenty of threat, lets hope we can come out of the blocks quick and play some canny stuff.

At least we now have some genuine width with Fergy and Obertan, quite like the look of the team, should be a good game, hope Bordeaux arent that good, fingers crossed, these frenchies can be soft if you get at them.

  • 53 toonarmydownsouth // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:52 PM

Matty the problem with that statement is marvs only shown glimes which is what obertan did first season and between the 2 this season yeah oba looks better than marv so far this season marv just looks disintrested tbf but cant see how marvs done no more than obertan but gets constant praise

Grafton at least wait til after the game for player bashing

  • 54 MacToon // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:52 PM

Looks like we have a chance tonight with this line up, best Pardew could do imo considering injuries and a big game on Sunday to consider.

Jesper, fyi, I am always about but don’t post so much for various reasons. Please stop adding me to your MIA list ;-)

    Good evening lads :-)

    Exciteted about the game?

Is that suppose to be a 4-3-3 formation we are playing with Cisse on the left? Strange one I must say when we have Marv, Fergy and Ba who can play there.

  • 59 jesperfuglsang // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:56 PM

MacToon…you are hereby taken off the ‘Veteran Memorial Wall’ :-D

  • 60 Marty-Toon // Oct 4, 2012 at 7:56 PM

    That’s quite a strong team,
We should give them problems with Shola and Cisse up front.
I hope for his sake that Obertan does something beneficial for the team tonight like cross the ball when possible and take on defenders.

  • 61 MacToon // Oct 4, 2012 at 8:01 PM

    Thank you Jesper. :-)

Anyone tried these newer TorrentStream links yet? They ask for a download…. are they safe? Noticed YES and Bloodzeed have been using them or is it just because sopcast hasn’t been working properly recently?

4-3-3 and already the players look more comfortable, and we are playing much better than in previous systems.

4-3-3 gets the best out of Cabaye and that alone is reason to always stick with this system.

Cabaye is playing with such ease tonight, radar calibrated and always looking for a swift, positive pass. So much to be said for allowing players to play their natural game, not second-guessing their actions, not wasting their energy doing things they don’t have the aptitude for, despite their best efforts.

He’s looked like the much touted ‘Scholes replacement’ again, tonight.

  • 176 ToonDownSouth // Oct 4, 2012 at 8:52 PM

he was doing exactly what we bought him for before pards switched formations. he was linking up well in the back and middle third, keeping the ball moving and movement flowing

he’s done nothing while on the right. don’t see why we switched it. Cisse, much to my surprise was looking good on the right.

i now realize a lot of our supporters really do know very little about this game if anita was ‘invisible’ in the first half. he and tiote behind cabaye has allowed cabaye to do what he does best

Cab always better forward when he got Tioté behind to secure him, i agree.

  • 188 mattyNUFC // Oct 4, 2012 at 8:57 PM

  • 189 toonbrother // Oct 4, 2012 at 8:59 PM

NUFC are doing well so far . Ameobi and Obertan have been men of the match so far for me. Ferguson is hardworking but he lacks the natural quality. Gives the ball away or makes passes that put his teammates under pressure.

  • 190 hotdog // Oct 4, 2012 at 8:59 PM

    Good first half,
    Rob Elliot;Confidnet game handling well
Danny Simpson,Struggling but an assist and first game so rusty
    Mike Williamson, Not tested yet
    James Perch,As above
Shane Ferguson; Looks more comfortable than santon for me
Vurnon Anita, should have scored working hard though Cheick Tiote, Typical Cheick
Yohan Cabaye; Knocking some lovely balls
Papiss Cisse,Looks hungry just waiting for that pass/chance
Shola Ameobi (c),They cant handle him
Gabriel Obertan – MOM first half says it all, what is it attitude because he shows glimpses, maybe it is because we are live on France TV!!!

I like Anita, plays with his head up, super first touch, maybe has given the ball away a couple of times but the lad has undoubted ability, people giving him pelters need to give their head a shake, now on the other hand, Simmo, how i have missed him running the ball out…

    ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

  • 193 TorqToon // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:00 PM

  • 194 Ketsbaia9 // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:00 PM

Ameobi and Obertan have been our best players so far. They’re getting a lot of chances from our right hand side. We need to make a half-time substitution and take Simpson off. Stick Santon on. Also, Williamson has had a very dodgy first half. They should’ve been 1-0 up after 3 minutes with that header.

  • 195 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:01 PM

Damn, Elliot crocked now. Just when he was edging out Harper, lets hope its not to serious

  • 196 JTOONJ // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:01 PM

Waddle is a geordie through and through! He can’t say newcastle are the best and deserve to be 10-0 up.
He was eating pies at his local mens club before nufc came along! and was sold unwillingly.

  • 197 Slank // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:01 PM

Ameobi looks very effective as the withdrawn striker / midfield link man. He is very good at shielding the ball and bringing the others into play.

I’m not entirely sure which position Anita is playing.

Should replace Tiote with Bigi. Tiote has one yellow and is possibly carrying a knock. He is needed on Sunday.

Gotta say we have missed cabaye putting pressure on the ball, think when anita gets used to premier league we will have a tidy little middle three, Santon for Simmo please Pardew, would like to see Santon RB and Fergy Left, think young fergy has done pretty good, uses the ball well and has a nice first touch.

  • 203 JTOONJ // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:02 PM

    Bollocks.

I rarely comment, but senseless nonesense like that really annoys me. Just because he isn’t taking on defenders and shooting from 40 yards he’s been ‘invisible’.

    That is all.

  • 211 cadete // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:06 PM

  • 212 lukes26 // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:06 PM

It seems like Newcastle are playing with two extra players. Bordeaux have almost already given up it seems.

Shola has been amazing. He needs to start against Man U. He’s actually sprinting past defenders!

Shane Ferguson has done very well, would like to see him get furthur up the pitch though. Anita had been covering his area for the first ten minutes of the game, and then switched sides for some reason.

Obertan has been the player of the game thus far. Most teams try to have an extra man watching him…but Bordeaux seem happy to let him rip their defense apart.

Anita is the only player not on their game.

  • 213 peterrwrightt // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:06 PM

Dropped Jonas from now on !

  • 258 Szarka // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:26 PM

BPC – agreed, Ferguson is better as left winger, in place of Jonas. Guti should be moved in the middle, if he plays.

  • 259 hotdog // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:27 PM

Big Pappa – He looks like a modern full/wing back to me i.e Cole/Marcello

  • 260 Jamesthefirst // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Cabaye plays well Newcastle play well. No coincidence.

  • 261 peterrwrightt // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:28 PM

Waddle shut up man, worst commentator ever

  • 262 niafron // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:29 PM

    @Ruddy

Pard don’t change his mind easily, but Fergie made 3 or 4 good games in a row now, so i hope i could be enough.

  • 263 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:30 PM

    @ Toondownsouth

Watching it on ESPN m8 and there was no mention of an injury. He looked supprised he was coming off or is it just me ?

  • 264 jawballsaswallwell // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:32 PM

Splendid stuff, will do the team a power of good, but doesn’t do anything to resolve the Ba Cisse, issue which remains the biggest thing slowing us down.

  • 265 niafron // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:32 PM

    Ahah! French radio this time:

“Newcastle’s fans did not forget Bellion played for Sunderland.”

  • 266 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:32 PM

Fantastic composure and distribution shown by Ferguson at times tonight.

  • 267 Szarka // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:32 PM

Its closely our best defending this season.

  • 268 hotdog // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:33 PM

Fergie is having a storma – Pards will be struggling to ignore his premier league claims

  • 269 peterrwrightt // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:33 PM

    big pappaa
ESPN said nothing of injury and Cabaye did look surprised he was coming off..

  • 270 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:33 PM

How on earth can Pardew pick Gosling over Sammy ? . Makes no sense

  • 271 p // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:34 PM

Cabaye told the bench that he wanted 5 mins more a bit earlier

  • 272 Szarka // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:35 PM

Well Tioté is off and Gosling on, almost what i tought. Also i would give a few minutes to Sammy to.

  • 273 ToonDownSouth // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:35 PM

    Hahaha. Coates is f’ing terrible.

  • 274 p // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:35 PM

    Liverpool – comical

  • 275 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:36 PM

So are we going to beat Brugge 8-0 then since Bordeaux beat them by 4 ? :) . Bindippers losing aswell haha

  • 276 peterrwrightt // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:36 PM

nobody knows how much i want a 5-0 win here… Steve Harper still has it like!

  • 277 Brutooon // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:37 PM

Shane ferguson third assist in three games.

Jonas Gutierrez make two assist in 4 seasons

  • 278 jawballsaswallwell // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:38 PM

Harps is as good as ever, superb at that type of save, textbook stuff.

  • 279 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:38 PM

    Gosling is pants like

  • 280 jeff // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:38 PM

lame commentators prob mad lolpool are getting smashed

  • 281 hotdog // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:39 PM

Was bellion not about 20 yards off side there wtf

  • 282 ToonDownSouth // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:39 PM

In terms of distribution, Krul is our 3rd best keeper.

Harper & Elliott always immediately look to throw the ball out quickly and set up an attack.

  • 283 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:40 PM

The only question left in this match – will Shola completely seize up before it’s finished? ;)

  • 284 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:42 PM

    @ ruddy

I hope the medical team have a few oil cans spare so they can lube up those rusty limbs :)

  • 285 ToonDownSouth // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:43 PM

I don’t think we’ve been this comfortable in a game since we were in the Championship…

  • 286 toonbrother // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:43 PM

Has Gosling even touched the ball?

  • 287 niafron // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:44 PM

Unfortunatly lads, got to go before the end of the game.

    Bonne soirée messieurs.

  • 288 jawballsaswallwell // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:44 PM

On the strength of this performance by Fergie, we don’t look at all as much in need of a top fullback in January. Santon, Anita, Simmo, and Fergie if he does prove the real McCoy has us well covered there.

I hope so he has been great!

  • 289 hotdog // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:45 PM

They look poor but bigi and anita are controlling this game for us. We have found a diamond in Bigi

  • 290 hotdog // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:47 PM

niafron – cheers for the french comments mate :-)

  • 291 jawballsaswallwell // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:47 PM

Then again we aren’t up against Man U here, so I might just pull my head in a touch.

  • 292 toonbrother // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:48 PM

Krul is not our third best keeper in terms of distribution. Fans are so fickle its disgusting. The man is a world class goal keeper in every sense

  • 293 Big Pappa Cissé // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:48 PM

We are absolutely bossing this game now like. The ref.should have blew the full time whistle 20 minutes ago

  • 294 p // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:48 PM

289 -yes I think we are missing Cabaye, he was back to his best tonight

    Liked Bigi from day one

  • 295 ToonDownSouth // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:51 PM

Chris Waddle is such an utter utter knob. He’s spent the entire game slagging Cisse off, for no apparent reason.

  • 296 p // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:52 PM

I think Waddle is just pointing out that he has been caught offside far too much and that is because he is not even checking around him.

  • 297 ToonDownSouth // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:52 PM

    toonbrother

    WHAT?? WHAT? WOW.

You think Krul’s distribution is world class?

    Are you serious?

  • 298 jawballsaswallwell // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:53 PM

The f@#k is that Cisse after that great run by Fergie, he’s put him away on a plate from nothing and he runs offside like a kid.

  • 299 james589 // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:53 PM

Haven’t been following the whole game- did Elliot get injured or did Pards just decide to take the p*ss and swap keepers like?

  • 300 check the toastie // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:53 PM

Obertan has hopefully shut a few halfwits up for a little while tonight, the boy defo has ability for me, just needs a little more courage to get on the ball and do his stuff.

Gosling always appears to just chase around contributing zilch, always a yard away from were he should be, lacks anticipation and pace.

  • 301 james589 // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:53 PM

Haven’t been following the whole game- did Elliot get injured or did Pards just decide to have a laugh and swap keepers like?

  • 302 p // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:56 PM

yes, Elliott was injured – hamstring or thigh or something

  • 303 hotdog // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:57 PM

james – he pulled up when clearing a ball

Check – Obertan has rightly been given stick and he will rightly get praise for his performance tonight. He needs consistancy and approach every game just as he has done tonight and he might have a future here.

  • 304 ToonDownSouth // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:58 PM

One of the Bordeaux coaches spent the week slagging off Obertan in the press.

Maybe it was just the motivation he needed.

  • 305 james589 // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:59 PM

Ah well- didn’t think we’d be seeing Stevie get a run in the side again to be honest. Still quality though. What a servant of the club. Pushing 20 years now surely?

  • 306 check the toastie // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:59 PM

Couldnt have gone any better, the frenchies waved the white flag like, Fergy, Obertoon and Cabs a special mention from me. Simmo and Gosling still annoy.

  • 307 toonarmydownsouth // Oct 4, 2012 at 9:59 PM

    James
Yeah he went if with a groin strain

  • 308 achtoon // Oct 4, 2012 at 10:01 PM

Man of the match? Thought fergie may have knicked it.

  • 309 Szarka // Oct 4, 2012 at 10:01 PM

Great job, great defending, Bordeaux didnt got a real chance ( ok, they got one ), and our attack wasnt great but, did get 2 goals. Fergie played well, should be played as a left winger. Simpson came back well, as did Cabaye too.

  • 310 jawballsaswallwell // Oct 4, 2012 at 10:01 PM

Yeah, Obertan remains a work in progress, he can be a real asset at Newcastle but you have to deliver or your gonna get stick, probably as it should be.

  • 311 lordjoesnow // Oct 4, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Couldnt watch game, got an interview so im on train to london.

Been following the comments though! Very amusing. I assume Perch had he quiet game tonight? He was the only player not to get a mention.

Glad Obertan did well and hat the tactics have altered and that fergie got another decent game. Shame about the injury to elliot as he has looked class.

Well done to shola ameobi! One of our most prolific european goalscorers ever! I want to see his record cos he cant be far behind shearer now and well above bellamy and dyer and kluivert right?

I rate Coates. Wish he was in our side.

  • 316 Lynxie // Oct 4, 2012 at 10:53 PM

Couple of things lads. Obertan was class tonight, if he can do that consistently, we have ourselves a player. take nothing away from Bordeaux, but that was a great win tonight against top opposition.

Also. Waddle is a red and whiter, always has been always will be. Wont give NUFC the credit we deserve. Take it from someone who knows him……..Oh and he cant score pelanties either the dopy tw*t (world Cup semi final FFS..)

  • 317 Lynxie // Oct 4, 2012 at 10:56 PM

Oh and Gosling has got one of those Harry Potter ‘cloaks of invisibility’. Sooner we get shot of this enigma the better.
